to meteorologist kari hall. we have a little bit of a break in that smoke, but i hear it's coming back. >> yeah, for some parts of the bay area it's still going to be pretty good in the south bay and santa clara valley. the north bay and the east bay. we will be heating up and we'll be watching our inland heat as well as the fire danger. as far as our air quality and what we're going to see today, one again, good air quality for the south bay but elsewhere it's above that 50 mark that we look at as far as the measure of particulate matter and that means there will be some smoke moving in and it may affect people who are sensor sensitive to the smoke. the warming temperatures in the forecast that's coming up a little bit later. just in, chp investigating a shooting on a vallejo freeway that sent a woman to the hospital. video shows the victim's car full of bullet holes. police says the shooting happened at 11:00 last night, the victim westbound on 80 near

highway 37. the chp says the victim was awake and talking when taken to the hospital but otherwise no word on her condition right now. police have not released a description of the suspect or the car they were in. turning to the pandemic, the fda is expected to grant full approval of pfizer's covid vaccine today and medical experts hope it will ease concerns for people who are hesitant to get the shots. >> as "today in the bay's" sergio quintana tells it it could mean changes in how prescribed the vaccine. >> reporter: once they grant full approval professor of epidemiology dr. monica gandhi says it could remove one of the key reasons people haven't got their shots yet. >> there's a psychological barrier to taking it for some people. this is great. a lot of people hopefully take it when it's approved. >> reporter: full approval means more businesses, schools and other organizations can mandate

them without any concern for legal challenges. it also means doctors will have broader license to prescribe some patients third doses. >> there's more leeway for me as a prescriber to say, you know, i think you're immunocompromised, you may not fit exactly into the definition the cdc or the fda laid out. >> reporter: full fda approval could allow pediatricians to consider doses for some children who are just under 12 but dr. gandhi warns pfizer is about to release data on dosing for kids between 5 to 11. >> even though it's true so many pediatricians will say you look like a 12-year-old or weight is higher, generally as an 11-year-old i think your weight is on a side i can give a dose. i doubt many will do that for the lower weight. >> reporter: the side effects such as heart inflammation, cases rare but have been noted in younger men between 16 and 30. sergio quintana, "today in the

bay." new questions are being raised about who was the first victim of coronavirus in the united states and when. until now it was believed a san jose woman was the first death in the country. patricia dowd died but one person died on january 11th, two others on the 18th and two more on the 25th all before dowd. the san jose mercury news reporting the death certificates spans five states and noncalifornia. it tells us the virus was in america weeks earlier than originally thought. >> the police department is mourning one of their own. corporal moonie died saturday from covid-19 complications. he joined the department in 2013 and rose through the ranks to detective before arriving in more rag ga moony served in the sheriff's department for 21 years. he was a united states marine

corporal veteran who served overseas and saw combat in iraq. he's a fierce advocate for victims and his colleagues will be missed. when it comes to making it in the bay, marin has the lowest unemployment rate anywhere in california. the edd released the county jobless numbers. marin has the lowest rate at 4.5%, san francisco 5.2%, santa clara at 4.9%. the bay area added close to 15,000 jobs last month. statewide unemployment rate 7.6%. leaders are reportedly one step closer to making the town's no host short-term housing rental ban permanent. a temporary ban took effect shortly after the shooting that left five people dead at a halloween house party back in 2019. now hosts must live on the property at the time of rental, they have to be there for two days minimum.

the "east bay times" reports that last week council members voted to make that temporary ban permanent, provided it goes into the final reading next month. >> a lot of people rethinking their tahoe travel plans because the caldor fire is burning in the sierra, you can see why, the smoke is amazing. also highway 50 to the south shore is closed after the pass of the flames through too much over the weekend. one south lake tahoe ice cream store owner taking a hit in what's usually a busy time. >> it's really smoky. that's my normal view of the lake and you can barely see the lake right now. yeah. it's pretty grim. >> he says business over the weekend was down more than 60%. things so bad saturday they closed the doors early. so we know how that feels because we've seen it that thick here in the bay area. kari, we might expect to see

[ no audio ] >> it's a monday. >> hello. >> now you can hear me. all right. it's been really unfortunate to see all the smoke drifting over across that area across tahoe as that fire continues to burn. we will watch conditions because the winds will pick up again. our temperatures we'll start out this morning in the mid to upper 50s and a look at san jose 57 degrees and we will gradually warm up. some upper 60s by 11:00 and then take a look at these highs today. actually much cooler than normal because of all of the smoke and also a strong ocean breeze that's been picking up. temperatures today in the mid 70s for san jose and also for napa, 86 in antioch and still low 60s in san francisco. we'll talk about the changes ahead for this week but you're seeing a crash on the bay bridge. >> we've already had changes in the view we show you behind me. i was watching there were no lights coming up on to this deck

planned because of the delta variant. today we're focusing on a report that comes in on existing home sales. more than half of the people in the workforce are likely to search for a new job in the next year according to a survey from bank rate. among those who are employed and looking for work, 56% say flexibility including hours and remote work are most important to them. higher pay, job security, paid time off and a better or more inclusive work environment round out the top five reasons people look for new opportunities. peloton's long rumored rowing machine may be on the way. 9 to 5 google have discovered texts referring to the app including how to do a rowing stroke and language that suggests peloton will offer a real water scenery that users could view. they will not be the first to get into the smart rowing market but could attract more subscribers for its milpitas.

welcome back. it's 4:47. a look at the san mateo bridge. mike is going to tell us all about the monday morning traffic. >> hopefully you don't have the monday morning blues. at least today it could be the grays with that smoke out there. >> it's been like that the past few days. at least we did have a break for much of the weekend and we're starting out this morning with some clouds in parts of the north bay. this is mainly due to the marine layer and the fog. it's the not the air quality yet.

santa rosa temperatures low to mid 50s and a slow warmup. it's going to feel cooler than what we normally see this time of year. our near surface smoke as we've seen at times a blue sky over the weekend and it was so nice, but it's going to go back to that milky color, that light gray, and that's because of the smoke especially in parts of the north bay. notice that we're not going to see as much of that, at least to start out the day in the east bay and south bay, but where we see the yellows and the reds that indicates air quality that's going to be unhealthy for people who are sensitive wildfire smoke and not bad for the south bay but we will see the smoke moving through the east bay and looks that way for tomorrow. a stronger ocean breeze kind of helps clear things out for tomorrow afternoon and a lot of that smoke moving off towards the east and away from the bay area. temperatures wise, we start out in the 50s today and then heading toward to the afternoon, low to mid 70s, checking the calendar, what month is this,

and it's still august. as we are going into tonight it's going to drop back into the 50s and then we start to heat up. if you are confused about what month it is, we won't be by thursday and friday as we head into the low to mid 90s and also that smoke starting to settle back in again for the end of the week. let me show you brentwood and the trend we're headed on. you can see that. we have some upper 80s for the next couple days. mid 90s for thursday. and then up to 101 for friday and saturday. get ready for the heat for the inland areas. as we look at our overall forecast we start out nice and cool. we'll keep the cool weather for a few days. a breezy westerly wind an the temperatures start to kick up for the end of the week. san francisco warming up going from the low 60s to the mid 70s. mike, we have more to report on the bay bridge. >> i do. the second time in ten minutes we had a traffic break coming out of san francisco on the lower deck into treasure island. i believe they wanted to move the tire that was in the lanes.

they got that cleared out. the tire or wheel. a car that was affected sounds like there was a crash, major damage to a vehicle. no major injuries reported. see a lot of clustering right here but traffic is flowing. see that coming down the decline toward the oakland side. it is open. i heard about no lanes blocked for a period of time. the lower deck out of san francisco it's been there enough slowing in the island tunnel there's slowing showing up on the sensors. everything looks clear including vasco getting out of brentwood. no problems at 580. back to you. new this morning, vice president kamala harris is kicking off a visit to southeast asia in singapore where she met with the prime minister. she's there to strengthen allies. harris is focused on working with nations to end the pandemic, tackle climate change and prevent cyber threat. disgraced movie mogul harvey

weinstein will be arraigned in a los angeles courtroom. the latest grand jury indictment includes a sexual battery charge. this is the third time prosecution has asked the grand jury to update the indictment against the convicted rapist. last month a new york jury found weinstein guilty of raping an aspiring actress and assaulting a tv and film production assistant. he maintains any sexual activity was consensual. a republican florida representative matt gaetz will be em broid in controversy, but he is now married. he is under investigation as part of a sex trafficking probe and tweeted he eloped over the weekend marrying on catalina island. according to "vanity fair" senator rand paul performed the ceremony. as twist in the effort to recall governor newsom. one of the leading contenders investigation. the fair political practice the

commission investigating if larry elder failed to disclose all the income sources the way transparency rules require. a complaint alleges he failed to properly disclose his stake in his own corporation. state law requires political candidates to list all income sources. elder's office so far not commenting. the recall election is september 14th and we put together a voting guide that has the answers like what if you didn't get your ballot or vote in person how do you find your polling place. head to nbcbayarea.com/recall. so what began as a fun challenge turned out to be quite an ordeal for a group of teenagers visiting near a beach. it was about 8:00 saturday night that six teens decided to climb from the beach up the 400 foot cliff to the bluff above. three made it. the other ones got stuck in the middle and had to be rescued. one of the teens said in hindsight probably wasn't the

best decision. >> there were points where probably all of us grabbed the rocks, slid down and were falling on the cliffside. >> yeah. >> 100 feet above the sharp rocks. >> a coast guard helicopter crew ended up rescuing the three one by one and had to pluck them off the side. the six climbers were all 17 and 18 years old. fortunately none of them was hurt. coming up on "today in the bay," grab some popcorn and maybe a blanket, outdoor movies coming back to san francisco and we're going to show you where you can take your movie out for a film under the stars. >> kids at one peninsula school district will have to mask up while outdoors. elementary and middle schoolers will be under a new outdoor mask mandate. high school students have a choice as to whether to wear a face covering. the student or the superintendent says more than 80% of students already were wearing a mask outdoors. they can take them off if they're six feet apart from everyone else. we'll be right back.
