meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking air qty conditions for us. >> we are going to see a lot of changes because of the caldor fire that continues to burn with very little containment and we are seeing some spots getting some improvement today in the north bay. you will have a chance to breathe some fresher air as well as parts of the south bay. moderate air quality for the coast and the bayp, the east bay and santa clara valley. there will be drifts of smoke coming in, but much of that smoke is now moving off to the east towards tahoe as it continues to burn over sierra and the coast is looking better today as well as the north bay. we're going to be watching this. a slight shift in the wind direction could change our air quality. we're going to see that as we head through the week as our temperatures warm up. more on that in a few minutes. >> the caldor fire in el dorado county it is the top priority. the fires jumped highway 50, closing in on lake tahoe.

fire officials worry changing winds and bone dry vegetation could create a nightmare situation for the tahoe region. the fire has already displaced about 25,000 people and destroyed more than 600 homes. >> obviously like i knew there was fire risk in the area and mountains but i didn't expect it to happen so soon. >> it just blew up super fast. you know, we're canyons and this is rugged territory and resources were on the dixie fire. that's just how it is. >> the caldor fire has burned more than 114,000 acres. it is just 9% contained. the weather this week so far cooperating for firefighters on the front lines of the dixie wildfire east of chico. containment grew to 40% and half of the evacuees yesterday were allowed to return home. the fire has burned 727,000 acres. now here at home, a difficult way to start the school year, east bay the death of a 14-year-old girl.

valentina langhammer, a freshman at concord high died saturday from appears to be fentanyl poisoning. as "today in the bay" reports this type of tragedy is destroying more families. >> reporter: family and friends in disbelief that 14-year-old valentina langhammer is gone. she attended concord high for one week. folks say on friday night she texted her friends kids at school had given her a pill and she was thinking about taking it. >> and the kids think yeah, it's only for relaxing. but later, she's dead. she's gone. finished. >> reporter: police providing pictures of what the deadly pill may have looked like. >> so the one right there is her bike, that

outdoors and adventure. her father found her lifeless body in her room saturday morning. >> really hard to say bye to her, good night, and wake up the next day and see her laying on the ground with the blood in her pillow, tried to wake her up and she's dead. >> reporter: tears and sobbing at the memorial is a scene playing out across the bay area and the nation. recovery advocate tom wolfe says young people are not overdosing, they're dying of fentanyl poisoning. >> their child purchased what they thought was an ox owe codone pill or xanax off of social media and it was counterfeited or fentanyl and laced with illicit fentanyl and the child overdosed and died. >> i got this f turtles. valentina, david, and mary yanna, my three kids. now only two. >> reporter: the school district says it's providing counselors for anyone who needs it out here

at concord high. police say their investigation is well under way. in concord, terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. 4:34 right now. happening today, san jose leaders considering widening covid vaccine requirements to most city related large public gatherings. mayor sam liccardo's plans calls for proof of vaccination at any city owneded venue. the rule would apply to sites including the convention center and the sap center. proof of a negative covid test would not be enough for admission. happening today the vta will give an update on plans to resume light rail service. trains have been out of operation since the deadly shooting at san jose's rail yard on may 26th. the ceo is expected to address test trains that will run on the light rail system. employees returning to work and bringing back passenger service. new this morning, authorities in southern california are investigating an apparent theft of mail

containing batches of ballots. officers found 300 ballots of a stolen box of mail inside a man's car at a 7-eleven. they arrested the man on drug and gun charges and trying to determine if he knew the unopened ballots were inside the box. the recall election is september 14th and we put together a voting guide that has all the answers to your questions. like what -- if you didn't get that ballot or what if you actually want to vote in person, how do you find your polling place. head over to nbcbayarea.com/recall. it's 4:36 right now. time to get a check of that microclimate forecast. kari hall, keeping track of it all for us. what are we in store for today? >> it's been nice to have the cooler weather, the breeze that we get every now and then, but, of course, the smoke has been top of mind as we continue to see the hazy skies around the bay area. as we are starting out in walnut creek, you're heading out the door, temperatures in the mid to

upper 50s. it will still clear out but have that hazy kind of grayish tint to the sky. our temperatures will reach into the low 80s for concord. that's pretty nice. and well below normal for this time in august. in oakland today, we're up to 68 degrees. 82 in livermore. and san jose reaching 86. napa today headed towards 75. we will be heating up this week and i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> the drive is calm but we have a couple areas you can't drive. right here this is east bay 80 away from the bay towards fairfield and vacaville. that will happen tonight and then tomorrow night and following in this direction. then on thursday and friday night, friday into saturday, we have the westbound direction. if you're heading eastbound tonight there's a loop around until 6:00 a.m. and over there at red top road. the opposite direction is a little more complicated we'll talk about that. still have the closure for 242 and debris in concord. no major issues. we'll detail that in the next

sparked by the fda giving full approval to pfizer and biontech's vaccine. stocks jumped because the at and more companies to mandate the shots amid the spread of the deltahan 200 point yesterday and the nasdaq closed at a record high. today we're focused on a report on new home sales and earnings from best buy. president biden will meet with ceos of several tech companies tomorrow to discuss how they're improving cyber security following a spike in data breaches and ransomware attacks since the pandemic. bloomberg reports tim cook, microsoft's ceo satya nadella and amazon's new chief andy jassy will attend. the heads of ibm, google, jp morgan chase have been invite pd. they will discuss how software

can drive better security and protect the supply chain overall. ford is doubling production fort f-150 lightning because of strong early demand for the electric pick-up truck ahead of its launch next year. reuters reports ford plans to spend $850 million to meet demand. industry watchers have questioned whether buyers are willing to give up gas powered trucks for electric models, but commercial customers are pushing for electric vans and trucks because they're trying to reduce their carbon footprint. i can't wait until we see the first ads of the pickup trucks going over boulders and then plugging in to a remote charging station out in the back woods. >> that's the thing. what do you do for farmers? they have to set these up, right. i come from a family of ranchers. >> not too many out there. we'll be watching. thanks, contessa. coming up next on "today in the bay," is it fog, smoke? meteorologist kari hall tracking it all for us. >> we have a little bit of both.

we're going to see the fog near the coast. smoke mixing in. and for some parts of the bay area, air quality improves today as temperatures only reach into the low 80s. we'll talk about this and when that smoke returns coming up. and the traffic will return as well, but right now now very calm and enjoy it on the richmond side as folks are heading across the bridge into the north bay. we'll talk about what's going on in contra costa county coming up. plus, making rock and roll history in san jose. the move today that could forever imprint one band's mark on the city.

and a good tuesday morning. good morning to you, downtown san jose as we get started with the day, dark and early for you this morning. of course, dark right now, you can't see, but air quality we're worried about today. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that for us and how are things looking for us today? >> we've had so many days of degree with smoke off and on at least we've had some breaks here and there with the blue sky during the afternoon. we're going to see the same thing again today. also some fog near the coast. take a look at golden gate bridge as we've seen the fog draped along the coast and that's also going to have some of the smoke we've seen. near surface smoke not too bad. some spots clearing up, especially for the coast along the north bay and from san

francisco down to half moon bay and then where we see the light shades of blue that's moderate air quality. it's improving compared to what we had yesterday in parts of the north bay. but still, all of the smoke drifting off towards the east and choking out lake tahoe and that area and so we're watching that air quality farther off towards the east. looking at our temperatures today, this is still late august and we're only talking about temperatures in the south bay reaching 75 in milpitas and 78 in gilroy, cupertino up to 77 degrees, i don't know if it gets better than this. the natural air conditioning with oakland in the upper 60s, low 80s for livermore and along the coast and daly city reaching 63, san francisco up to 65 and the mission district and our north bay temperatures reaching 73 in santa rosa. still very cool in bodega bay and for ukiah reaching 88 degrees. a wide range in temperatures and we're going to see some hotter

weather moving in by the end of the week. so as we go toward thursday, friday, we're going to have a hot finish to the week with our inland areas really ramping up with the heat and the smoke settling in. let's check out morgan hill. our temperatures from the low 80s today and tomorrow to the mid 90s for friday, saturday, and it will be slow to cool down as we go into next week. looking at our seven-day inland forecast, low 80s today and upper 80s for friday. look at how hot it's going to be on saturday. get ready for that. once again our natural air conditioning turning off. and heading over to you, mike, a couple notes for contra costa county. >> we are looking at overall a nice drive we talked about that, the big green sensor view here. north 242 we know about the closure from time to time. we have that again tonight. up toward concord avenue, 680 toward highway 4. in that area northbound 680 an earlier crash, there may be a crash activity going on right there as well.

and then coming down toward the benicia bridge slowing there it is a little bit. there's a crew that is clearing coming into the area and the construction tarts over in concord should be clearing up. the bay bridge no backup and no problems across the span. >> thanks so much. new this morning, new york has a new governor, the photos show kathy hochul being sworn in at midnight. a full swearing-in ceremony happens later this morning where she'll deliver a public address. it follows the sudden resignation of andrew cuomo over sexual allegations. he addressed new yorkers before exiting again, denying improper behavior. news from new york is serge impacting san francisco. new york governor cuomo's last day in office he commuted five people. >> one of them san francisco district attorney chesa boudin's father david gilbert. cheryl hurd has more. >> as you probably know i'm stepping aside as your governor. >> reporter: with only hours

left in his term governor andrew cuomo commuted the sentences of five convicted killers, one gafds gilbert, the father of san francisco's district attorney chesa boudin. >> while i appreciate him wanting his father to be released, he should think long and hard about the families and the pain they've had to endure for 40 years. >> reporter: gilbert and his wife were members of a violent underground. they left boudin with a babysitter so they could be getaway drivers in the brinks armored car robbery in 1981. his mother pleaded gill toy murder and robbery and he was in prison for two decades. his father was still behind bars after being convicted of murder and robbery. >> it was a disgusting final act on the part of the governor who commuted the sentence of david gilbert. >> reporter: chesa spent decades visiting his parents in prison and as a result learned the ins and outs of the criminal justice system from a unique vantage

point and ran for san francisco's district attorney on the platform of ending mass incarceration and eliminating cash bail. tonight, he gave us this picture of he and his father saying in part, my heart is bursting and it also aches for the families of the three victims. although he never used a gun or intended for anyone to get hurt, my father's crime caused unspeakable harm and devastated the lives of many separate families. republican new york state assemblyman mike lawler. >> i think cop killers do not belong out of jail. >> reporter: the president of san francisco's police officers association agrees, saying as chesa boudin continues to use his influence to lobby for his biological father's release, the victims will continue to be haunted by their immense loss. gilbert's commutation heads for pat roll board in new york. assemblyman lawler plans to block his release.

cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. happening today, vallejo leaders meet to set new groundwork. greg na apparently left in june. this is abruptly leaving citing a medical condition. the city experienced some countriers haves. in a closed session they will debate the steps to replace him and an interim is holding down the fort. san jose leaders will consider making a piece of rock and roll history a permanent city landmark. this 1907 craftsman house on south 12th street was home to the lead singer and original singer of the doby brothers. they founded the band there. after many steps city leaders will hold a public hearing on its land mark status. the current owners tell nbc bay area they're maintaining the home's architecture. coming up next on "today in the bay," mystery solved. the connecticut neighborhood
