assisting evacuees. going up against the county, one bay area city doing just that by considering indoor masking again. that moving today that could make it happen. this is "today in the bay." welcome to tuesday morning. it's 5:00 right now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall standing by with that. >> it's all about the smoke and our air quality that's been changing day by day as well as microclimate by microclimate. yesterday was a pretty unhealthy in parts of the north bay looking better today and for the coast and bay, moderate air quality and the east bay and santa clara valley. for the south bay along the bay it's going to be pretty good today. as we've seen some improvements in our air quality it may be one of the better days to get outside especially near the coast and in parts of the north bay before we see some changes ahead. looking at the bigger picture a lot of smoke traveling off

towards the east over lake taho as well as the fire spreading in that direction. this morning, the caldor fire is being called the nation's number one priority. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live with the latest overnight developments. >> reporter: good morning to you, kari. that caldor fire is now considered a national priority because the fire is starting to make a run toward the tahoe basin and we know that there is a lot of population there. now the fire jumped highway 50 and has fuel to burn because of the extreme dry vegetation in the area and also because of the changing winds. here's where the fire stands right now. 114,000 acres are burned. 600 homes at least are destroyed. 25,000 people are now displaced. there's only 9% containment. >> it just blew up super fast, super fast. and you know, we're canyons and

this is rugged territory and resources were on the dixie fire. that's just how it is. >> reporter: now anyone with plans to go to tahoe in the near future might want to rae think those plans. nothing to see the air quality is absolutely abysmal there and all of the routes should be reserved for people trying to get out, not folks trying to get in. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:02 right now. breaking news on the crisis in afghanistan, the director of the cia held a secret meeting with the taliban. nbc news reports the agency views the continue leader as one who can be negotiated with. he once led negotiations with the u.s. when the trump administration agreed to withdraw u.s. forces. today is pivotal in the evacuation of afghanistan. military advisers say the president will have to make a key decision in the next 24 hours. >> an end of the month deadline

for getting u.s. troops and stranded american diplomats and staff completely out of the region. "today in the bay's" jay gray live for us this morning on capitol hill. a lot of people are questioning, you know, if this deadline can >> yeah. included in that group, marcus and laura, good morning to you, are military leaders who say if the deadline stays in place the way it is a week away, there will only be a few more days left for evacuations before they draw down the almost 6,000 troops on the ground, their equipment and weapons. >> reporter: armed fighters a fixture in kabul and across afghanistan. the show of force that comes with the direct message, taliban leaders saying there will be consequences if u.s. forces stay past the deadline set by president biden now exactly a week away. >> we are well aware of the

stated desire by the taliban to have this mission completed by the 31st of august. we, too, are still planning on completing it by the 31st of august. >> reporter: evacuations have intensified. 37,000 air lifted out in a week including more than 10,000 in one 24-hour period. as the rush to get out continues. >> the implementation of this policy has been a disaster. >> reporter: the house intelligence committee is taking its first in-depth look at the situation. >> there were any number of warnings that the taliban might take over and some that included a -- the potential of a very rapid takeover. >> reporter: president biden has said the chaos was inevitable and continues to defend his plan to withdraw u.s. troops. >> i think that history is going to record this was the logical, rationale and right decision to make. >> reporter: the pressing decision for the president now, whether or not to push back his deadline for getting troops and

thousands of stranded americans out of afghanistan. >> reporter: and later today, president biden will meet virtually with the leaders of the g- 7 about the withdraw. many expected to urge him to extend the deadline. marcus and laura, it's ann over there. >> no doubt indeed.g,hank you. now happening today, benicia considers its own indoor mask mandate. the mayor says it's time. the problem is the county is the only one in the bay area not on board. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live in benicia this morning looking at what is at stake. cierra. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. a little backstory, beginning of august when the eight counties and cities came together to issue that joint statement that yes, the delta variant is present and we are going to reinstate that indoor mask mandate. solano county was not included in that joint statement but

today, a city in solano here in benicia, they've decided they're going to take the matter in their own hands and discuss the issue of making that indoor mask mandate. nbc bay area spoke with the mayor here who said city council will decide the mandate at today's meeting. in july days before the joint statement was issued we spoke with solano county's health officer on why the north bay county was not included in that statement. at that time the health officer explained the cdc's recommendation, quote, was misguided, explaining, quote, transmission that's occurring in people's homes, backyards, camping, it's not in an environment where masking recommendations are going to apply. end quote. fast forward to hours before council is set to vote, the leader in benicia says something needs to be done. >> i'm personally frustrated by having to do this again because i think that had we, as a nation, or as a state, had

everybody vaccinated an and everybody wearing a mask we wouldn't be here. >> reporter: again, that council meeting taking place today. the city of benicia stepping away from solano county to discuss that indoor mask mandate. we'll keep you updated with what comes out of that meeting. we're live in the city of benicia, cierra johnson, "today in the bay." >> thank you. the nation's top doctor anthony fauci hopes full fda approval for the pfizer vaccine leads to more americans getting vaccinated. this morning he tells the "today" show some skeptics may be saved as a result with more businesses and organizations perhaps implementing mandates. >> if we get the overwhelming majority of those 80 to 90 million people who are not yet been vaccinated, who have been reluctant to get vaccinated or not had the opportunity, i believe we can see light at the end of the tunnel. >> about 60% of americans are fully vaccinated.

you can watch the entire interview coming up on the "today" show after "today in the bay." san francisco schools may cheer the air a little when it comes to the health of its students and teachers. the district plans to spend nearly 3 million on air purifiers. 10% of all classrooms have them. if board members approve this it will add 3700 new machines. the hope is that this move will boost ventilation and lower risk of covid spread. and new details this morning in the death of a runner whose remains were located nearly a month after he disappeared in pleasanton. they found philip krajicek's body. he was reported missing july 10th and clues suggest he likely died before anyone began looking for him. the chronicle reports he may have been delirious from the extreme heat and passed out. his gps shows he zigzagged and began to slow after running for about five miles. developing in tennessee the search for ten people still

unaccounted for after torrential rain caused heavy flooding over the weekend. 22 deaths are confirmed and includes 20 in the town of waive early, 75 miles west of nashville. one woman who lost her business describes some of the frustration. >> you can't control jobs or natural disasters. however, no one was really able to communicate because the cell phones were down. >> see her interview on the "today" show. the mayor says it will take decades to repair the damage. >> you see a situation like that getting so much rain. we're to the getting enough at all. yeah. we see the extremes that happen with climate change from one end to the other and we're starting out this morning still dealing with the impacts of the wildfires across the bay area. and our air quality. as you're heading out the door for the commute this morning in concord we have temperatures in the upper 50s. it's going to be hazy today and sunshine continues at least we're enjoying some cooler weather. take a look at these high temperatures reaching into the mid 80s for antioch, livermore reaching 82 degrees, and some

upper 60s for oakland, mid 60s for san francisco, and santa rosa reaching 73 degrees. improvements in air quality today but change is ahead. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike how is it looking? >> we still have the overnight closure. the road work. that will happen until 6:00 a.m. today. scheduled to pick up. eastbound 80 at red top road. loop off and back on. there's an on ramp configuration folks know about. that shouldn't be a problem. it's going to be tonight, tomorrow and wednesday night. thursday, that's when the westbound commute comes in and you have to use this alternate. the longer one towards 780 or across the benicia bridge which right now is showing more slowing. there's something going on with regard to slow moving vehicles across toward the span. i can't find any roadwork. roadwork north 242 cleared up, checking for the benicia bridge. any slowing checking twitter as well as our chp reports because there aren't any problems reported there and no problems south of those bridges. back to you. it's 5:10.

even as companies stay away from the office they're hiring. san jose tech hiring up 13%, san francisco up 4%. this is quarter over quarter. from the start of the year until now, we can see other regions going growing as well. denver up 17%, richmond, virginia up 24%. the stock market looks to be as good as last week was bad. the s&p 500 and the dow both ready to set new records this morning after significant moves to the upside on monday. one of the things that is strange about the stock market or at least counterintuitive is that bad news can make the stock market go higher. there's no question covid is getting worse. that makes investors think the fed is going to keep goosing the economy and that drives shares up. good news, something that might push the relax its evidence is bad news. elon musk thinks the latest of tesla's optional self-driving

software isn't that great. he says a lot more work needs to be done. tesla's self-driving software is under several investigations after a number of crashes that includes autopilot a step down from its fully autonomous and expensive self-driving software. the consultancy hired by pfizer to name its newly approved covid-19 vaccine is explaining itself. as you probably don't remember, the pfizer vaccine is called comir natty. the company wanted to include mrna in the name because it used it to develop the drug. there aren't a lot of words that use those letters so they put it in the word community. the ceo of pfizer will be on the "today" show to talk about the vaccine which we can now say is safe and effective and savings lives. that's coming up at 7:00 on nbc bay area. i noticed you were saying the

across the benicia bridge. i cannot find any reports of any problems, but we see the slow sensors and they're changing for the better so i do think it was just a crew that is going through the area not affecting the span itself. these are the longer drives. the top ones through contra costa county, vasco leaving contra costa county an easy drive. the san mateo bridge with a clear view of the high rise and taillights heading to the peninsula. >> all clear as we are starting out with our temperatures this morning. in the 50s and 70s. it's going to be nice and a good break from some hotter temperatures that are headed our way by the end of the week. morgan hill reaching 81 and 77 in cupertino. moving toward the east bay, up to 80 in pleasanton, 68 oakland and hayward headed towards 73 degrees. redwood city looking at a high of 74. another nice day. and comfortable in san francisco with some low to mid 60s. for the north bay we're up to 84 in clearlake and napa today,

reaching 75 degrees. we've been talking about all of the changes headed our way and it's going to get hotter as high pressure moves in and by the end of the week, a shift in our wind direction will bring in more smoke as well as hotter temperatures, especially for the central valley that starts to move into the bay area. let's check out ukiah. one of our usual hot spots. reaching into the upper 80s, low 90s tomorrow, upper 90s on thursday. you can see how fast it's going to eat heat up. by the weekend we're up to 104 degrees. really hot. slowly cooling down by the middle to end of next week. so our inland forecast we'll see those highs in the low 80s today and tomorrow. some mid 90s by thursday into friday and then upper 90s once again some spots in our usual hot spots will reach over 100 degrees and for san francisco we're going from the mid to upper 60s to low 70s. you'll enjoy more sunshine. unfortunately it does look like

and bay and the east bay and santa clara valley. if you are sensitive to that smoke you need to limit your time throughout. as we take a look at our near surface model it does show some clearing for today as well as tomorrow with a brisk westerly wind that's been picking up. we're going to see changes ahead as it heats up and we get more of a northerly wind which will bring back the smoke. more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll check back with you. developing right now a young girl is dead, students in mourning after investigators say she took a pill someone gave to her at school. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live outside of concord high school and police are now investigating whether that pill may have been laced. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. believed to be laced with fentanyl. if you're not familiar, it's a powerful opioid used as a painkiller like morphine but much more potent. valentina langhammer was 14 years old, a freshman or a new

student here at concord high behind me. you can see her picture which was on display last night at a memorial on campus put together by her family and friends. that was last night. as i mentioned her parents tell us on friday night valentina texted her friends that some kids at school had given her a pill and she was wondering if she should take it. her mom tells us she believes her daughter was looking for something to make her relax. police show us pictures of what that deadly pill may have looked like. valentina took the pill and died from possible fentanyl poisoning. >> hard to say good night and wake up the next day with the blood in the pillow trying to wake her up instead. >> reporter: in santa clara county the district attorney is warning about an extremely toxic batch of fentanyl on the streets of san jose. seven homeless people have died within the past three weeks from

taking methamphetamine containing fentanyl in san jose. there's five more people throughout the rest of the county including a juvenile in morgan hill who have also died from fentanyl poisoning. most of these deaths happening between july and august of this year. back here in contra costa county, concord high school is making grief counselors available for students and teachers who are trying to cope with valentina's death. the police department says they are definitely investigating what happened. reporting live here in concord, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so tragic out there. >> really is. >> good time for parents to talk to their kids. pfizer's ceo speaking on the "today" show a day after the fda granted full approval to the company's two-dose vaccine for people 16 and older. this morning he's explaining pfizer is already developing a new version of the vaccine to battle the delta variant. >> i'm almost certain because

again soon. kris? >> reporter: hi there. we expect to hear something about that plan as the vta's ceo addresses the plan to return rail service to the silicon valley. vta service stopped the day of the deadly mass shooting at the rail yard in which nine were killed by a co-worker. part of the plan will be to run the test trains ahead of bringing back passenger service and we expect more details at 11:00 this morning. there are vta employees not ready to return and in the last week they were dealt another blow. one of the workers who witnessed the massacre died by suicide. the vta has taken no action to address the grief, mental health and the safety of their employees who have been under unfathomable extreme stress after the tragic shooting. the action is shameful and threatens the well being of

other 265 tir struggle a vta trainee was just arrested last -- for threatening to shoot up the place if he didn't get hired after struggling with a test. the santa clara sheriff's department did arrest that person for making threats. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> so much sadness out of that. thank you very much. authorities in southern california are investigating the apparent theft of mail. this is containing a batch of recall ballots. say officers found 300 ballots located inside a man's car parked at a 7-eleven. they arrested the man on gun and drug charges and trying to determine if he knew the unopened ballots were in the box. the recall election is september 14th and we put together a voting guide that has the answers to your questions like what if you didn't get the ballot or what about what if you

want to vote in person, head over to nbcbayarea.com/recall for all of those answers. developing right now, the weather this week so far cooperating for firefighters on the front lines of the dixie fire. containment grew to 40% and half of the evacuees in laser were allowed to return home. that fire has burned 727,000 acres. >> we think about those fires, just continuing and continuing to burn which affects all of our air quality around here. >> yeah. these fires, usually with the dixie fire what we normally have an entire year for all of the fires across california as an average. that's crazy to see how big it is as well as the caldor fire that continues to grow and the monument fire. much of the smoke moving to the east today. we're going to get some improvement in our air quality for parts of the north bay and south bay. our temperatures head toward the low to mid 80s and a nice

westerly breeze coming off the ocean and bringing in natural air conditioning and freshening up our air a bit. we will see changes. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, a crash in fremont. >> we do. in fact, until just a few seconds ago, about a minute and a half ago, all lanes were blocked and now they've just reopened. we have your typical slowing through san jose. don't want to forget about that right on schedule monday through friday and now at this time. 608 is quickly recovering approaching mission north and then toward washington boulevard that crash had all lanes tied as they cleared it to the shoulder. the tow truck arrived and everything is moving smoothly out of sunol, southbound, you should recover nicely there. recovered nicely across the benicia bridge. never found out what was going on, but we did track the changes and there was no problem out of the north bay after that for the early morning drive. we have the closure for east bay 80 getting up toward red top road. that closure will continue until 6:00 a.m., perhaps a few minutes shy of that, but that's what's going on for the roadwork tonight, tomorrow night and

sexual harassment allegations. he addressed new yorkers yesterday before exiting again denying improper behavior. one of cuomo's last moves as governor actually has a direct tie to san francisco's district attorney. >> before heading out the door, cuomo commuted the sentence of five people. now one is the father of chesa boudin, david gilbert, a former member of the radical weather under ground movement. they drove the getaway in a deadly 1981 brinks armored vehicle robbery. boudin's mother served 20 years for the crime and his father still behind bars. one republican new york congressman is vowing to block that release. >> while i appreciate him wanting his father to be released he should think long and hard about the families and the pain they've had to endure for 40 years. >> boudin gave nbc bay area a photo of him and his father

saying my heart is bursting and aches for the families of the victims. although he never used a gun or or intended anyone to get hurt, my father's crime caused unspeakable harm and devastated the lives of many separate families. president biden is under pressure this morning to extend his deadline to leave afghanistan. >> now the pressure coming from some of the closest allies, scott. >> good morning. who we expect will try to convince him an extension is needed as they talk in the emergency session of the g-7. president biden would like to be out by the end of august but that's less than a week away. the president will speak in a national address this morning. the white house says scheduled for 9:00 a.m. california time. these things run late often. one thing we were remarking about the other day between covid getting worse and afghanistan, the president makes national addresses very often.

there was a time not that long ago presidents didn't make national addresses, maybe more than once a year. now we don't know yet what the white house is thinking. but the head of house intelligence is certainly hinting an extension may be needed. >> i think it's possible but very unlikely given the number of americans who still need to be evacuated, the number of sivs and others who are members of the afghan press civil society leaders, women leaders. it's hard for me to imagine all of that can be accomplished between now and the end of the month. >> who is left in afghanistan and needs to be rescued we don't know the number. thousands of americans may still be there or it may be very few, nobody seems to know. also, keep in mind for every chaotic scene you see out of afghanistan there are good scenes. families, american and afghan

together safe, getting the help they need, that started with chaos, the white house clearly bungled it, unprepared, caught flat footed, but since those early days last week, 37,000 people have been evacuated without a single american soldier lost or injured. that's like safely clearing out the city of menlo park of every single person in less than a week. there's no question the early days hurt biden's popularity. down to the lowest level of his presidency. though we should point out higher than the previous president was ever able to hit at any time in his four years. that same nbc popularity poll shows nancy pelosi is one of the least popular politicians in washington, no matter who you ask, with an approval rating of 31%. donald trump is more popular than nancy pelosi. pelosi is running into trouble getting the two important bills

passed the budget bill and liberal democrats and conservative democrats have found something not to like. the house was supposed to start voting yesterday it didn't. it reconvenes at 9:00 a.m. our time. we'll be monitoring that and the president talking around the same time. we'll tweet about it and find me @scottmcgrew. >> thank you. happening today, vallejo leaders meet to set the ground work for finding a permanent city manager. he abruptly left in june citing medical conditions. during the time the city experienced some controversies. it's a closed session and they will debate exact steps to replace him. an interim is holding down the fort. san jose leaders consider making a piece of rock and roll history a permanent city landmark. this house was where tom johnson and john hartman founded the doobie brothers in the early 1970s. they were the band's original lead singer and drummer. city leaders will hold a public hearing on its landmark status.

the mid to upper 70s, 81 in morgan hill and for the east bay warmer for spots like antioch reaching 84. check out walnut creek, 79 and 73 in hayward along the coast we're in the low 60s. redwood city reaching 74. mid 60s in the mission district today. and for our north bay highs up to 84 in clearlake. this is the break from the unhealthy air quality and the heat before we see some changes ahead. here's what's happening. we have a storm system passing to the north. it's enhancing our westerly wind but then by the end of the week, high pressure is going to build in from the desert southwest and shift our wind direction instead of getting a wind coming off of the ocean it's going to be more of a northerly wind and our inland areas will be heating up and smoke will be returning. let's check out a spot like morgan hill where our temperatures will be heating up, low 80s today and tomorrow and you see how much hotter it's going to be on thursday. 91. the heat continues into the

weekend with some mid 90s and it's going to be slow to cooldl of next week. taking a look at our temperatures to the upper 90s all within the course of a few days. and so we're also going to see some slight warming in san francisco. little bit more sunshine and i know a lot of people want to enjoy it but unfortunately air quality will most likely be worse as well. we'll be watching that. mike, what are you looking at? >> we're talking about the bay bridge, the backup at the toll plaza not there yet. after we come back in the fall we see the schools coming back online adjusting time. five or ten minutes either way will really affect folks like at the bay bridge toll plaza. the span moves smoothly but if some of us leave five to ten minutes later others leave earlier we could all converge on one of the toll plazas at a critical time and starting to see that closer to the 6:30 time. 7:00 really building here. bay bridge already starts to build and so does highway 37, that's a typical pattern.
