we dive to the violent trend that left one student unconscious. this is "today in the bay." >> this is wednesday morning. and a good one to you. thanks for starting your day early with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get to meteorologist kari hall with a look at our air quality conditions this morning. kari, are we seeing any improvement? >> it is improving for part of the bay area. we've seen the smoke shifting around and yesterday was pretty good in the north bay, but today air quality will be moderate. for the coast and the bay, it will be improving and that means san francisco will have better air quality today as well as the south bay looking pretty good, east bay with the hazy sky and santa clar all of the smoke it' not surprising that the tahoe area has the worst air quality in the world. number two is chile with the air quality index at about 389, that's well below what we're

seeing in tahoe. we're going to continue to monitor this as we go through the next few days. it will be changing and unfortunately it does look like a lot more of that smoke comes into the bay area. an update on that in a few minutes. >> thank you. speaking of lake tahoe, wildfires in and around lake tahoe are nothing new, but this week it's different. long-time locals are fearful. >> the caldor fire 20 miles away but the smoke is blanketing tahoe, forcing kids and pets to stay indoors. yesterday lake tahoe had the worst air quality in the world. the caldor fire has burned close to 120,000 acres and it could be getting worse. here's cheryl hurd with the latest from the timeline. >> reporter: this video shows the caldor fire inching close to the south lake tahoe area. something the mayor there is painfully aware of. >> paradise has changed the way react to fire in our community.

we know now that we are in danger even when the fire is 20 and 30 miles away because we know that fire behaves differently now. >> reporter: businesses are 25% of normal. air quality when people there should pack up and go. some people there aren't waiting to be told to evacuate. some are already leaving. >> ultimately, if the next area goes into evacuation order, which is that area between twin bridges and the summit, if it goes into evacuation order, there will be a warning for some portion of the south lake tahoe basin. >> reporter: it's a fluid situation. >> i think we're going to be able to cut this off but keep the community aware of what's taking place and if there's perceived threats in the future we'll make sure we're ahead of that. >> reporter: mountain towns like

strawberry and kiber empty. the wildfire has covered miles of steep terrain. the threat now is the wind and the ability to cut trenches around this fire. the focus now is to save homes and lives. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." now to the pandemic, a pop-up site is opening up in the east bay for testing, as cases surge, fremont is holding a free covid testing and vaccine drive-through. it's the fourth times the clinic will reopen and be open until next month at the soft ballparking lot at central park and starts at 2:00 p.m. scot peterson is scheduled to face a judge today. he is serving life in prison for killing his pregnant wife 17 years ago. his legal team will continue fighting to get him a new trial, citing evidence of alleged juror misconduct in his case. the "today" show natalie morales sat down with his sister-in-law janney who has been leading the charge to prove he's innocent.

admit to charges in the scandal. today there will be a meeting about safety at a south bay high school. this comes after several fights on campus. a student was knocked unconscious in the middle of the quad, the main quad. "today in the bay's" damian is at silver creek high school with what some of the parents are demanding now. >> reporter: the video from last week is troubling. we are disguising the students' identities. it shows a freshman being knocked unconscious by a third student who intervened during the fight. >> this does elevate to assault. it's not a simple basic battery. losing conscious is severe and dangerous. >> reporter: since school started august 10th there have been multiple fights at silver creek high school, two required a police response. some parents privately tell me they believe kids feel emboldened since there are no police resource officers on campus. we showed the video to parents. >> yeah. they got to get some type of control over it.

it's sad. >> i think there should be security on. especially with that stuff going on. >> reporter: many school districts across the country have gotten rid of resource officers on campus. community groups argued that children were being arrested and getting criminal records for incidents that could have been handled by the school, not the courts. >> that we have been in collaborating with the police department as appropriate. >> reporter: the new superintendent of the east side high school district in san jose says he hired 24 counselors instead to provide a social approach to problem solving. he also says the district is hearing from all sides about the possibility of resource officers returning. >> others are saying please don't let an isolated incident or the incident of one site change the approach we've been taking. >> reporter: the principal at silver creek has schedule a zoom meeting with parents to talk about the fights and explain how she plans to keep their children safe on campus.

damian truj who "today in the bay." cameras may make a difference in the glass fire in wine country but one element wa camera system was early testing and not connected cal fire did use the footage as part of its investigation. pg&e helping to reduce the threat of wildfires. the company announcing an installation of 200 weather station ace cross california this year. 35 were newell installed in the bay area. pg&e says that the weather stations capture temperatures, wind speed and humidity levels which helps predict the need of power safety shutoffs. the installations is part of a 1200 weather stations that will be installed across the state. the most in the bay area are in

sonoma county which has 73, santa clara has 46. >> we have our own right here in the studio. meteorologist kari hall. she's always the one that we depend on. >> yeah. looks pretty good for us as of now, weather conditions have been favorable, especially for them trying to get some more containment on the caldor fire and the dixie fire. as you're heading out the door this morning, here's a live look outside in dublin and we are seeing everything looks like it's rolling pretty well on 580 and starting out with some clouds overhead. temperatures in the mid 50s. it's going to clear out but still have that hazy tint to the sky. as we go into late morning into the afternoon, our temperatures head toward the 60s and 70s. some of our warmest spots today still only in the low 80s, so this is still cooler than normal and you better take it in and enjoy it because the heat up starts tomorrow and we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking in the south bay? >> we have a couple surprises. the flashing lights are on the southbound direction.

a very good now wednesday morning to you. taking a live look outside. city by the bay. see the bay bridge there in san francisco, the bridge all illuminated. nice way to start our wednesday morning. >> i like it to start out nice and clear. so, kari. >> right. >> kari, can you deliver? >> i guess. looking pretty good. sometimes starting out with some fog is a good thing too because that helps cool us off across the bay area. as we head across the bay in oakland a nice clear view there.

let's go to the south bay looking at our high temperatures this afternoon, reaching 80 in morgan hill, we're still enjoying some cooler than normal weather than what we normally have at the end of august. in walnut creek we're heading up to 80 degrees and 72 in hayward, oakland up to 68, 62 in daly city. this is the weather we've had from the past few days and it does continue. a very brisk westerly wind in san francisco that will keep those temperatures cooler there reaching 65 downtown and 75 in napa, 74 in santa rosa and some upper 80s around ukiah and clearlake. we're going to see a shift in the wind direction. this really going to make a huge difference. the kind of temperatures we're going to feel by tomorrow, a little bit more of a southerly wind picking up and by friday, is when we really start to feel the return of the smoke and the hotter temperatures. taking a look at our near surface smoke model this has really been useful this year because it does show some of the areas on the map that is going to have a little bit more

clearing for today and tomorrow, especially near the coast and parts of the north bay. not looking as smoky. look at thursday afternoon, we start to see much more of that smoke settling into parts of the east bay, around fairfield as well as the tri-valley, as some of that smoke starts to settle into the sacramento valley and comes into the bay area. so as these temperatures heat up, the smoke will be returning and take a look at these highs reaching into the low 80s today, jumping up about ten degrees tomorrow and even hotter for friday, saturday, and still pretty hot sunday. as we check out san francisco, a little bit warmer there as well, going from the mid 60s to the low 70s and with that sunshine comes more smoke and haze. and mike, you're saying the fire in san jose clearing out? >> it wasn't a big deal as far as the traffic goes. it was southbound underneath 280 on southbound 101. traffic flows smoothly in both directions there. we still have the issue farther south in gilroy. that cooking oil, 100 gallons

spilled, that's what the westbound is closed for, but right by 101. highway 84, 680 and mission are your alternates like in past weeks. we have the closure overnight as they work on the roadway and looking at nothing else besides that for the tri-valley. in oakland, southbound at his peer yan reports of a crash, car sideways across the roadway, no slowing heads up away from or to the bay bridge which is moving smoothly as well. back to you. >> thanks, mike. scary moments for drivers in southern california after a small plane made an emergency landing on the freeway. this happened yesterday on southbound interstate 5 near delmar and san diego county. that pilot hit a car, breaking the wing of the plane, but the driver whose car broke the aircraft's fall says she's relieved everyone is okay. >> we broke the fall because we had a couple people drive up after and say they saw it come down and it landed on our car. >> wow. no one was injured. still not clear why that pilot landed on the freeway.
