week to move thousands this is after president biden refuses to extend the deadline. the new blowback this morning from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now. and a good morning to you on this wednesday. thanks so much for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. new video to show you this morning the caldor fire is burning in el dorado county right now, air quality is at the worst level on record. there are fears the fire may soon breach the lake tahoe basin. here's the latest of what we know. it's 11% contained. it has burned 122,000 acres. cal fire now says 637 buildings including 461 homes destroyed. some17,000 structures are still threatened. >> as that continues, meteorologist kari hall, of course, been monitoring the air quality that we're seeing from the smoke coming from those fires. >> yeah. we've seen some pretty good air quality here compared to what they have around the tahoe basin

and it's moderate for parts of the north bay where you had a break yesterday, moderate for the east bay as well as santa clara va in parts of the south bay. as we mentioned tahoe does have the worst air quality in the world and you compare that to some other spots where it is not even close. unfortunately, some of those fire crews do expect that fire to make a run over closer to lake tahoe as the wind shifts over the next few days. that's something we're watching as well as our air quality and temperatures heating up here in the bay area. i'll have more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll check back with you. breaking news this morning, johnson & johnson saying a second dose of its vaccine provides a strong boost of protection from covid. that means booster shot may be coming soon for millions of americans. the drug company will submit its data to the fda evaluating similar studies from pfizer and moderna. johnson & johnson says when a booster shot was given at six

months covid antibodies in patients increased nine fold. a live look over san jose this morning, which has new proof of vaccination requirements. leaders voted unanimously to require proof for events with more than 50 people at city owned facilities. but will the policies help or hurt. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson live with a look at the new policy and the impact as well. good morning, cierra. >> good morning. yes, although that policy was voted for unanimously, there was some opposition, there were folks out there saying they did not approve and not want it, but as you did mention proof of vaccination or vaccinations will be required for those city run properties. this is exactly what we know about this new process. vaccines are required for attendees and staff for events of 50 or more people at city-owned facilities. this impacts buildings like the sap center, the san jose convention center and the san jose center for the performing

arts. the mandate will not go into effect immediately. this is so venues can have a chance to prepare and while some in attendance at the meeting did not support the move and appeared maskless to share their thoughts, mayor sam liccardo says while he understands the frustration, he reiterated the virus is still spreading. >> want to take the modest steps to ensure we don't have some kind of mass infection. >> reporter: and this decision comes as new data reveals san francisco has only seen a small percentage of people for live events like concerts. according to data reported by the chronicle the group predict hq found fewer than 1 million attended those events during the first half of 2021. so that's a mere 6% of in-person attendance for the same events during the same time in 2019. but with stadiums expanding

their capacity levels and the vaccine available, major cities like l.a., austin and miami as well as out there seeing an increase of videos, a graphic that shows the percentage of visitors compared to the same time in 2019 and the second half of 2021. 66% of the folks that were in 2019 appeared at the same events in 2021. 59% in austin, 49% miami, and 50% here in san francisco. so as it appears we are slowly inching toward that return to normalcy. it is important to note that as more communities implement that vaccination requirement, we know not everyone is vaccinated so you may not reach the same numbers. we are in fact inching closer. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you. now running counter to county policy, as expected benicia leaders have approved mask requirements for all indoor public locations. solano is the only is the only

bay area county without a mask mandate and the chief health officer argues it's not effective. residents told a different story during the hearing ahead of the vote. masks will be required in public indoor areas for anyone over 4 and as long as it's needed. turning to the crisis in afghanistan, u.s. forces now have six days to transport potentially tens of thousands of people from afghanistan. this after president biden announcing he's stand big his deadline to vacate the country by the end of the month. "today in the bay's" jay gray live in morning. biden's plan getting some pushback here. >> yeah. marcus, it is. world sides of the aisle here in washington had asked the president to push back that deadline a bit, but citing growing threats and stepped up evacuation flights. he decided to keep it in place, though acknowledging the situation is still very fluid.

>> reporter: transport flights are leaving the kabul hours. >> we are currently on a pace to finish by august 31st. >> reporter: president biden standing by his deadline for u.s. forces to leave afghanistan. acknowledging there are growing terror threats targeting the evacuation mission. >> every day we're on the ground is another day we know isis is seeking to target the airport and attack u.s. and allied forces and innocent civilians. >> reporter: after a classified briefing on the situation, republicans and some within his own party worry six days isn't enough time to get everyone out. >> it's hard for me to imagine hands. that can be accomplished people are going to die. and they're going to be left behind. >> reporter: satellite images show the crowds that continue to gather around the airstrip.

chaos there and the constant pressure of taliban fighters on almost every street corner in the capital city making it difficult and the pentagon says at times dangerous for thousands of stranded americans to get to the airport. >> it's a tenuous situation. >> we already had some gun fighting break out and we run a serious risk of it breaking down as time goes on. >> reporter: another reason the president is sticking to his deadline while also asking advisors to prepare contingency plans to stay longer if necessary. there would be consequences if that deadline is extended. publicly, i want to quote here, we are not in favor of allowing afghans to leave. still a very tense situation on the ground. >> that was certainly a concern there. jay, i know yesterday that was a

secret meeting between the cia director burns and the top taliban leader. did this help or hurt the u.s. mission? >> i think it depends on who you ask. what the administration is saying is, no, the deadline wasn't changed but that wasn't because of that meeting or those negotiations. it was because that's what the president has decided should happen. they do believe that it may be helping in getting some americans into the airport that it's becoming a bit easier for americans to get through the fighters there on the ground outside the airport. again, that doesn't include the over the last two decades or just the afghanistan nationals who want to flee the country. >> that's always been a big concern there. it's not easy as going to the airport and leaving. jay gray in washington, thank you. it is 6:09 right now. sad news surrounding a legendary figure in san francisco's social scene.

harry denton has died. if you lived in san francisco for any amount of time you probably visited one of his many night starts that started with harry's on fillmore and eventually included other spots like harry denton's on stewart street and his starlight room at the sir francis drake. he was always the man about time and at the center of the clubs he actually ran. he suffered a stroke eight years ago and was living in a nursing home in seatle. the chronicle reports he died sunday. quite the iconic figure in the city. he was 77 years old. >> lot of memories for people. >> fun to run into him. dancing at the starlight room. yeah. fun. as we get a look at the forecast, meteorologist kari hall, has been monitoring that. how are we shaping up for the day? >> we're starting out with clouds and this is going to help keep our temperatures down for today. one more day of the cooler weather. if you're about to head out for

the morning exercise, morning run, in parts of the south bay we have some upper 50s, clouds through about 8:00 and clear the rest of the day. looking a little hazy but take a look at these high temperatures reaching the low 80s for some of our warmest spots and low 60s near the coast. we'll talk about a warmup ahead but you have breaking news out of the east bay. >> better news for folks on the upper east shore freeway, all lanes cleared and no word of any major injuries. that was a motorcycle crash that they had here. the right two lanes blocked until a couple minutes ago. i sent that out on twitter. good recovery, traffic toward the bay bridge. recovery for the earlier or late pick-up for construction down on the 101 off of the bay bridge out of the east bay. the toll plaza didn't have any that's good stuff. sounds good. >> coming up next on "today in the bay," all new, some cruise lines with a new mandate.

good wednesday morning. you're starting out in concord temperatures in the upper 50s and that morning commute looking pretty good. we'll start out with clouds but then quickly clear out and another cool day, only some mid 70s by 1:00. this is our last day before it heats up. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. the bay bridge toll plaza, the morning commute looking pretty there now as folks are released from the backup, the crash cleared in san pablo. more slowing here and recovery into san francisco. good morning. happy wednesday to you. goldman sachs says if you want to come into one of their branches as a customer you need to be vaccinated and staff too. this is the first major bank to say customers as well. the drug store chain cvs says all staff must be vaccinated

from here on out more as vaccines going from emergency use approval to full approval by the fda. new employees at cvs need to get their first shot before starting work at cvs. united airlines the first to say its employees needed to be vaccinated. hawaiian quickly fol alaska said it might require vaccines if they're approved but has not updated its policy now that we've seen the first approval. markets once again hit new records on tuesday, maybe not as much action today. world bankers will meet virtually for a one-day meeting on friday. president biden will meet virtually with cyber experts to talk about security. many silicon valley companies will be represented including officials from apple and google as well as major banks. here we see a similar virtual meeting on infrastructure. it was ten years ago tim cook became the ceo of

apple taking over for the late steve jobs. jobs made his mark on apple, but in the ten years that cook has been in charge, the company has tripled revenue. if you invested $1,000 in apple when he took over as boss it would be worth $16,000 today. it's also easy to forget now in modern day in 2021 the courage of what cook did in 2014. he came out as the highest ranking public executive to acknowledge he was gay. >> where i valued my privacy significantly, i felt that i was valuing it too far above what i could do for other people and so i wanted to tell everyone my truth. >> that interview in 2014, it's also remarkable in 2021, how just routine that seems and oh, yeah, who cares. yeah. >> especially for our children, it's -- >> right.

the in the bay area. i think other parts of the country are -- gay rights in alaba77-year-old covid after testing positive on a carnival cruise to belize. she died on august 14th. according to the new york times she departed on vista on july 31st testing positive after experiencing respiratory complications. she was admitted to a hospital in belize and put on a ventilator before being evacuated back to tulsa, oklahoma, and receiving treatment. meanwhile, new this morning, disney and royal caribbean cruise lines say you need to be vaccinated if you want to hop on one of their ships. the requirement applies to trips scheduled out of florida starting next month. it applies to everyone 12 and older. florida's governor issued an executive order last year saying

upper 70s today or much of the south bay, east san jose reaching 77 the seven-day forect at the bottom of the screen. it's about to heat up and we're looking at a high of 83 in antioch today, 77 in martinez, and in hayward today 72 degrees. 62 in daly city and san francisco reaching 65 downtown. north bay highs up to 74 in santa rosa and 85 in clearlake. so it's all about the wind direction, the westerly wind, wind from the west, brings in some cool ocean air, but going into tomorrow and friday the winds are going to change direction and temperatures will be heading up. looking at more of a southerly wind as we go into tomorrow and friday and that's also where we're going to see the smoke returning. looks pretty good especially near the coast and parts of the inner bay. but then look at towards the end of the week. we start to see the smoke settling in coming straight down into parts of the central valley and into the bay area and our temperatures heading up in some of our hot spots like antioch

are letting particles in. sorry guys, beards and mustaches might need to go if you plan on wearing an n95. 3m which makeslean shaven, where your n95 touches your face. n95s are considered disposable, but 3m says you can use them many times. how long is that? until they are dirty, damaged or difficult to breathe through. can you clean or wash an n-95. 3m says no under no circumstances should an attempt be made to clean or wash a 3m filtering face piece particulate respirator. earlier when supplies were short, the cdc did allow for decontamination only as a crisis strategy and the cdc has lifted that. 3m does not recommend decontaminating n-95s. to help make your n95 last as long as possible, 3m recommends storing in its original packaging in place where the air is clear and out of direct sunlight.

tahoe, the worst air quality on the planet as the caldor fire reaches just 20 miles from some of the most pristine water in the world. the tahoe basin. 122,000 acres now charred with the fire only 11% contained. this morning, we're taking you on the ground to the frontlines. this is "today in the bay." at 6:30 on your wednesday morning, good morning. thanks for starting with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. want to get straight to our big story this half hour, the fire burning so close to tahoe, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those conditions for firefighters as well as our air quality at home. >> we've seen at times the smoke moving in parts of the bay area but we've been spared from some of the worst air quality. it's been moving off to our east. we're going to see it's moving back

the east bay getting moderate air quality as well as santa clara valley. we are going to see once again that air moving over toward lake tahoe, some of that smoke creating the worst air quality in the world and you can see how that compares to other spots like chile. it's not even close. we're, of course, going to continue to monitor that. we have a report from our mike on the front lines of the fires. >> good morning. about 17 miles to the east of the park exit. i'm going to step out of the way. as you can see some active fire burning right here south of the freeway. it's a line of fire. your typical pattern as it comes down the hill or the canyon towards the river, a zigzag pattern here. this is active burning again about 17 miles to the east of the park exit. this morning there is no wind to speak of this morning. this is a fire that, you know, right now just via gravity working down towards the river

and relatively low to the ground flames. so not something up in the trees, not seeing a lot of torching or crown movement but at this point in time working its way down through the lower level fuels at this point in time. >> we'll continue to monitor everything happening there. here closer to home, south bay parents meeting with their children's school principle today. it comes in the wake of a surge of on campus violence and demanding to bring back a police presence. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live now and as you saw there, some of these violent attacks caught on camera, kris. >> yeah. those are definitely hard to watch, but today, some east side union high school district parents will be able to ask some questions of their administration, although they have told us that they think that without school resource officers patrolling campus, students might feel emboldened to get into fights. now the video as we mentioned is kind of hard to watch even with the students' faces blurred out.

in this particular incident a freshman was knocked unconscious during a fight and it is not the only fight at silver creek high ago.e school started two weeks escalated and administrators had to call for police because there are no longer school resource officers on campus. the superintendent new to the district says the drkts is working with police when necessary but also taking a social justice approach with the guidance of 24 new counselors. >> that we have been in collaborating with the police department as appropriate. >> others are saying please don't let an isolated incident or the incident of one site change the approach we've been taking. >> reporter: now the fights caught on camera provide one snapshot but the data provides another. east side union high school district has 30 schools with about 22,000 students and in the last full academic year where the students were on campus. prepandemic there were five students who were arrested on

campus and 31 received police citations which according to -- represents less than 1% of the district's population. today parents will have the opportunity to meet with the silver creek high school principal to ask some of these questions to talk about the possibility of bringing those officers back on to campus or what the alternative might be. that is going to be a meeting held via zoom. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. now to the pandemic, and a pop-up testing site is opening in the east bay as covid cases surge fremont is holding a free testing and vaccine drive-through. it will remain open through next month and today starts at 2:00 p.m. at the softball complex parking lot in central park. convicted murderer scott peterson is scheduled to face a judge today. peterson is serving life in prison for killing his pregnant wife laci peterson 17 years ago. but this morning, his legal team will continue fighting to get him a new trial. now they are citing evidence of alleged jury misconduct in his

original trirson's sister who has been leading the charge to prove he's innocent. >> how do you explain that he told amber that his wife had died? >> there's nothing i can say justify or explain that statement, but also there was no evidence that he had anything to do with what happened to laci. >> you don't believe an adult adulterror makes motive for murder? >> i don't think you can take that leap. >> laci's family and the district attorney both declined to comment. watch more of the interview on the "today" show after "today in the bay." also what the peterson defense team or who they say should be investigated for murder. new details suggest wor fire in wine country but one element was missing, the fire destroyed 300 homes and 1500

buildings. the napa valley register reports a high-tech fire detection camera system was in place and it caught the start of the fire. the county leaders say it was still an early testing stages and not connected to tuned. cal fire did use the footage as part of its investigation. pg&e is taking new steps aimed at helping to reduce the threat of wildfires. the utility announcing the installation of 200 more weather stations across california. so 35 are newell newly installed. they capture temperature, wind speed and humidity levels which helps predict the need for power safety shutoffs. the installations are now 1200 this is across the state. sonoma county has 73. this is the most in the bay area. santa clara has 46. so important to know what's happening outdoors. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall right

now. >> yeah. we're starting out with clouds and a little bit of smoke in the mix but not too bad. in fact it's been pretty good here in the bay area for the past couple days. heading out for a workout, our temperatures in the south bay starting out in the upper 50s going to clear out at about 8:00. the rest of the day really nice, highs in the low 70s with the hazy sunshine, moderate air quality continues for the inland east bay an north bay with our temperatures on the cool side but about to warm up. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. still one highway closure going on. >> let's not forget about the one we started with that happened overnight and continues no and 101. typical slowing. the big map shows an easy drive. down here not the slowing we're talking about 101 through san martin that is predictable. closure 152 because of that crash overnight about 1:00 in the morning, 100 gallons of cooking oil spilled across the roadway. folks are using ferguson to get by and that's a slower drive ta will add a couple minutes coming into the area. our viewers traveling out that

we will talk about the build patterns as it builds over the next 60 minutes critical for the south bay. >> we've got new details this morning on a deadly triple shooting in the east bay. one person died at the scene. it happened last night in brentwood on brentwood boulevard. two other victims were rushed to a hospital. their conditions unknown. at this point there's no suspect description or details about a possible motive. this is brentwood's third homicide this year. new this morning, scary moments for drivers down in southern california. this is after a small plane made an emergency landing on the freeway. so this happened yesterday on southbound interstate 5 near delmar outside of san diego. that plane struck a car and that impact broke the wing with of a plane but the driver of the car says she's just relieved everyone is okay. >> we had people drive up and it landed on our car. >> amazingly no one was injured. it's still not clear what triggered the emergency landing.

makers. >> well, the concern long term would be wildfire smoke, the wildfires we've seen north of us get closer to the bay area. fortunately the bay area has been spared this year. but unfortunately, the fire yet. there will be the blessing of the grapes here in the livermore wine valley this morning. right now we're in the vineyards where you can see workers picking what is five tons of the verdalo wine grape a wine variety. the weather has been mild, not much in the way of heat waves. last year, lots of smoke from the fire that was burning thousands of acres south of livermore. the concern for wine makers last year and, of course, in the long term, if we get the smoke again, smoke taint, which can permeates the grapes and give the wine a smoky lick the bottom of the ashtray flavor. >> we have to figure out how to

deal with smoke every year if that's going to be a thing. livermore hasn't been significantly affected by that yet. but it doesn't mean we won't be at some point in the future. >> how do you deal with it and last year. >> last year we were fortunate we didn't -- there weren't many effects from it. so nothing we had to do. a lot of wine makers were -- had to hold off on picking and not bring in certain vineyards because of it. so it's really -- scientists are working on it trying to figure out ways we can salvage grapes that have smoke taint. >> now when you're looking at the wine harvest red grapes they usually take about a year, year and a half before it gets to the customer. chardonnay about a year. verdalo the white wine variety, the winemaker here hopes to have these in the bottle by thanksgiving. relatively quick turnaround. reporting live here in

75 in napa. in ukiah today look for a high of 89. it's all about the wind direction. when we have a westerly wind it brings in our natural air conditioning and that ocean breeze, but notice that as we get toward t week, some of our to give us a boost in the temperatures and also bring in more smoke. let's get a look at our near surface smoke model for today. still pretty good for the coast as well as parts of the inner bay and coastline for the north bay and not too bad tomorrow. but then look toward the end of the timeframe for tomorrow afternoon. in parts of solanoity is going really fast for tomorrow afternoon. and that's as the smoke starts to settle into the central valley due to that shift in the wind and also heating up temperatures with napa's high temperatures this weekend in the mid 90s. it's going to be really hot and make sure you have that in your weekend plans.

some of our inland areas close to 100 degrees. it's going to be slow to cool off for the beginning of next week. mike, you're seeing some of the lanes filling in out of oakland. >> we're looking at the build up as we approach 7:00, almost all the lanes are filled. now the toll plaza has been gradual here as is the pattern. the 7:00 hour sees the peek of traffic at place like the san mateo bridge, not unusual, but we have seen the shift a little bit later in many spots. still, concord really i showed you the slower drive last time through highway 4 approaching 242. there's still some slowing. it's just building now for 880 through the east bay into hayward and fremont. the south bay we do have north 101 with your typical slowing and 87 like we've been showing you, starting before the end of our show there as well. a live look shows you nothing dramatic. just more traffic. >> everybody getting out the door. thanks. it is 6:52 right now. happening now, getting uc berkeley could be harder than ever. cal must freeze enrollment after a court decision. the judge found that rising enrollment has affected nearby

6:55. as you get your day started here are the top stories on "today in the bay." some south bay parents concerned about a surge in school violence will meet with leaders. >> kris sanchez live in san jose. they say it's time to bring back a police presence. >> those parents will have an opportunity to talk with their school principal here at silver creek high school after a number of fights erupted in just the first couple weeks back on campus. the video is hard to watch of some of the fights even with students' faces blurred out. in this incident a freshman here at silver creek high was knocked unconscious during a fight and it is just one of several fights on campus that escalated to the level of needing police intervention. last year the east side union high school board eliminated the

resource officer program. the superintendent who is new to the district says that the east side union district is working with police when necessary but also taking a social justice approach with the guidance of 24 new counselors for a district of 22,000 students across 30 campuses. now the silver creek principal will meet with parents via zoom today. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." breaking news we're on & johnson says a second dose of its vaccine providing a strong boost of protection from covid. that means a booster shot may be coming soon for millions of americans. the drug company will submit its data to the fda evaluating studies from pfizer and moderna. booster shot was different at six months antibodies increased nine fold. sad news this morning surrounding a legendary figure in san francisco's social scene. harry denton has died. now if you've ever lived in san francisco for any amount of time you probably visited at least one of its many night spots.

it started with harry's on fillmore and included other spots like harry denton's on stewart street and the starlight room at the francis drake hotel. denton was always the man about town and the center of the clubs he ran. he suffered a stroke eight years ago and was living in a nursing home in seattle. the chronicle reports that he died on sunday. harry denton was 77 years old. we're keeping our eyes on the caldor fire this morning. new video to show you. it's burning up in el dorado county. right now air quality is said to be at its worst levels on record and there are fears the fire may basin. here's the l cal fire now says 637 buildings including 461 homes are destroyed. some 17,000 structures are still threatened. the smoke concern as well, the worst in the world right now. >> yeah.

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all of that and our air quality here as well. >> we've seen some moderate air quality compared to what they have around the tahoe area and western just getting word it's moving closer to the tahoe basin. hopefully more containment. this is ahead of hotter temperatures and the shift in the wind direction. we'll have to watch that fire behavior over the next few days as smoke comes into the bay area. we're going to see temperatures reaching into the upper 90s for the inland areas. meantime san francisco low 70s, but with that sunshine we'll also see some smoky skies. we'll be monitoring that. mike, what are you watching. >> no major problems on the roads. i-80 traffic heading north to the bay bridge. southbound toward hayward the backup. approaching the san mateo bridge which moves from hayward over to the peninsula. on the peninsula caltrans experiencing delays. the police activity in san francisco. another note as we come back here, highway 50 still closed because of the fire activity and the smoke there. >> we'll keep our eyes on that
