right now at 4:30, forced out of their homes. the gas leak leaving hundreds evacuated overnight. we're live.

i'll tell you we are in the neighborhood right where that gas leak was first reported. here behind me there are crews working to still repair that the line so folks can start coming back home. there are 25 homes and businesses under evacuation order and that means a lot of families are waking up someplace where they were not expecting this morning. crews were working to have that leak capped off at midnight. according to pg&e, this is a line that was broke by a third party contractor. the community center is open.

there are a number of detours that you are going to have to consider if you are coming here to the area, st. leo's church and school is down the street and not far from the center. looked like alameda was completely open and a lot of detours will take you into the neighborhood itself. >> thank you for the note about alameda, because that's the most critical of the avenues up here and down here is san carlos. for those familiar with the area, here's west san carlos, and here's a mcdonald's and a

safeway, and the evacuation zone is anywhere north of there heading up to alameda, and it's this entire parameter here. here we have san carlos over to lincoln, and those will get you past the scene as well. we're talking about the potential to get this closed. for now we send it back to you. >> thank you. the crisis in afghanistan continues this morning as the u.s. nears its tuesday deadline to evacuate all troops. officials are still trying to make contact with around 1,000 u.s. citizens still on the ground. the u.s. military says planes are taking off at an equivalent of every 39 minutes.

the air quality is going to be good for some spots, including the bay and the coast. we are going to, unfortunately, have one more day of some clear air before that smoke returns. take a look at temperatures. it will be warmer this afternoon reaching into the stpreuz in antioch today. livermore up to 92 degrees. we will see upper 80s in morgan hill and upper 80s in parts of the north bay while the coastal areas will stay in the 60s today and will head towards the 70s for the weekend. we will see a lot of changes ahead, and heading over to you, mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? the surface streets kris just showed us, we have the evacuation area as best we can tell, lincoln is an option, and

it's 4:48. you're watching "today in the bay." good day when it's little friday. >> yeah, friday eve. baby friday. we love it, kari. going to heat up? >> yes, it's going to heat up but it's going to be a critical weekend for the caldor fire. this is something we are going to be watching very closely. this red outline shows the burn scar area or where that fire is actively burning, and some of it crossed highway 50 as well as a large area that has been covered in steep and rigorous terrain. we look at how close it is the to lake tahoe, because with the shifting wind this weekend it's possible it could make a run closer to the tahoe area. the leading edge of the fire is 14 miles away as the crow flies, and there's steep and rugged terrain but we could see it

moving in that direction as the wind shifts. a very critical weekend. we will see changes in our air quality as the wind changes. we are going to see good air quality today near the coast. moderate for the north bay and eastbound. it's going to make it unhealthy to be outside, not only tomorrow but the weekend as we will see the temperatures cranking up and this smoke starting to really pour in to our area. take a look at our temperatures and where we are headed today. heading over towards cupertino, and then we will see upper 80s for the south county. for the east bay we will see 90s starting to pop-up here. hayward, degrees, and near the coast we're in the mid to upper 60s.

san francisco will be in the upper 60s today so a little warmer there, too. for the north bay, we're all the way up to 94 in ukiah and napa today, reaching 87 degrees. we are seeing warmer temperatures not only today but continuing to crank up for the weekend. let's check out livermore, we are expected to see that crank up. our 7-day forecast, upper 90s for a lot of the valleys for the weekend and then next tuesday and wednesday we will start to cool off and hopefully improve our air quality, too. it's going to be a smoky and hot weekend. it's also going to be smoky in san franciscos on our temperatures come up to the lower 70s. we'll watch that and have more updates. we're looking at a smooth drive but did have a deadly crash that occurred over in the tri-valley overnight. at one point it had a lot of activity at the isabelle on and
