>> i am marcus washington. we begin in downtown san jose where hundreds were forced to evacuate after a gas line break. >> any luck trying to cap this thing? >> reporter: well, certainly we don't smell anymore gas in the air, and apparently it was strong when this happened yesterday morning. we are in the neighborhood right where it happened yesterday, around 10:00 in the morning, and there are more than 300 homes in the densely populated neighborhood that are now empty this morning. there are residents waking up someplace they probably were not expecting. crews were hoping to have the leak capped off by midnight. according to pg&e, this was a third party contractor that hit an eight-inch line. no injuries are reported but about 325 homes and businesses are under that evacuation order. that order is expected to

continue through at least 8:00 this morning. the community center down the way is open for shelter, and one evacuee told us it's what people are going through that >> it's not like your house is burning or floods, it's just get out of your house. >> reporter: this is about a ten-block area under the evacuation order. if you have business in the area of the rose garden or shark tank you might have reroutes to work with but the main thoroughfares appear to be open. the alameda was open and san carlos, a busy thoroughfare, appeared to be open, too. mike is tracking the little arteries you might have to work around.

yeah a. lot of the corridors will not even be a worry for focus driving. west san carlos, it goes north up to san fernando, and it's across the street for what is the parameter of the border. we have meridian, and so meridian, lincoln as well as west san carlos are options for you. that should take care of things for you. >> thanks, mike. we go to the crisis in afghanistan. >> let's get to jay gray, just five days now until american troops have to vacate. >> yeah, laura and marcus, good morning to you. you are right. tensions are rising on the ground in afghanistan. most of that around the airport in kabul. we know the state department

urged any americans in that area to leave for the time being because of terror threats, and we are now hearing that the british armed forces saying a lethal attack could happen at that airport within the next few hours, and that's from the british side of this and they have stopped their flights for the time being. 500 do have instructions on how to get to the airfield and leaders are trying to make contact with 1,000 u.s. citizens still on the ground. u.s. military says planes are taking off every 39 minutes or so. the taliban is tightening its grip on the people trying to leave the country. >> it's not an airport, it's a front line war. i have never seen something like

expedite the visa process. we will hear from a man tha his worries are far from over and he's trying to help his loved ones escape before it's too late. and then wearing blue today to honor a classmate that died in east contra costa county. the 12-year-old died when a car was struck by a freight train. that car was in a railroad crossing at east cyprus road and oakley about one block from the school, and a 19-year-old woman behind the wheel was injured. 30 miles east of stockton, a areola fire. it quickly grew to 1,000 acres. schools in that area will be closed today. schools are closed today in the tahoe area as firefighters

try to hold their ground on the advancing caldor fire. that fire burning more than 125,000 acres. the flames have destroyed at least 600 structures, and as we have been telling you all week, the air quality right now is just horrible in the tahoe basin. for thousands of people in the bay area feeling the impact from the days of smoky skies, relief may soon be coming and will be free in the form of no cost air filters, and it's provided for the first time ever from an unlikely source. >> reporter: although air quality is not too bad in the bay area today and we are all aware all it takes is the shift in the wind to become unbearable

especially for those with respiratory issues, and air filters will be given away from the bay area air quality management district is leading devices. 3,000 devices are available for prioritized residents including low income and those with respiratory issues and centers. they plan to live stream a "how to" on creating a clean air room in your home and they plan to do that over facebook. you can apply today at 10:30, it's at the san jose's women's club, 75 south 11th street in san jose. this is from that organization directly. there's no air quality warning today. we're all too familiar it doesn't take much for the air

east bay, you can enjoy time outside today. and then temperatures are heating up here. low to mid-70s for the late morning into the afternoon but will be hotter later today. we will talk about the weekend coming up. a live look at the bay bridge. i was worried about the treasure island tunnel because that's where the report was, a disabled vehicle, and just saw the lights and the clustering form so there may be a second incident westbound heading over towards san francisco just shy of the tower here. you see there are lights here and there could be another disabled vehicle on the incline. we will track that. there's the incident marked westbound getting into san francisco out of oakland and here eastbound 80 has a closure potentially for another 45 minutes over there. tonight it will be westbound, and it will be down towards the

the dow coming off of four straight winning sessions, and the s&p 500 and nasdaq closed again at record highs. strong corporate earnings are helping to offset doubts about the spread of the delta variant and what kind of impact it might have on the economic recovery, especially in areas where we are seeing a big surge. we are getting a report on the number of people filing unemployment benefits and a resized estimate on second quarter gdp or growth in the economy. some are surprised about interests in working from home, but they have seen workers can be productive at home or anywhere. sales force is giving employees lots of flexibility and more than half of the staff will be working pandemic.

instagram is allowing users to look for content based on topics instead of account names or hash tags. that will make the app more like pinterest with a grid of photos and videos related to the search. instagram says its still working to expand the feature and for now you can browse new results with searches. i thought hash tags were about topics but it gives you an ability to search things that are not specifically hash tagged. >> hash tag, learn something new. >> yeah, going like this. the way americans invest is changing and a new survey shows those habits differ from generation to generation. about 18% use automatic

82 in palo alto. napa today headed towards 87 for today. we're also still enjoying good air quality, a little moderate for some parts of the inland east bay, and if you are sensitive to the smoke you need to limit your time outside and then by tomorrow we are all going to need to limit our time outside and it's going to turn much more unhealthy. the map pretty much turns red and we are going to see a lot more of the smoke coming in as we don't get our natural air-conditioning, and as that backs off we will see a lot of the fires to the north as well as to our east start to move into our area. now, you may be wondering, we're expecting worst air quality, but what would it take to see the orange sky like we did in 2020, and what happens is you get the colors from the light and sun that gets split and we don't see

what we call the ae long waves, and you think back to science class why the sky is blue and that's because we have short waves that we see from a sky like blue indigo, and they don't make it through the smoke and it gets bounced back upward and we get the long ways coming through. and now the temperatures will be heating up. as we look at gilroy, we will reach in the mid-90s tomorrow. looks like the peak of the temperatures there. and then our inland temperatures, they are going to be hot for the weekend reaching into the upper 90s, so get ready for that and crank up the a/c. mike, still cool for the morning commute. >> yes. this is what we talked about. we heard it was originally in the treasure island tunnel and

congressman and that's what she has done. and now, one clinic sent a man a bill 35 bucks plus a $25 late fee, and then we made an inquiry and the company then fixed the bill. a lot of giants fans seem to agree that torture baseball is back in fashion. so the giants need to prove that again yesterday against the mets, down 2-1 in the seventh inning. crawford hit a two-run double and that gave the giants the 3-2 lead. in the bottom of the ninth, the mets loaded the bases, and the mets popped up everything and the giants got the win.

sixth graders because a teacher reportedly tested positive for covid and this teacher, by the way, because vaccinated and this is described by parents as a frightening and tearful experience for their children. the paper reports that some parents are angry now at the school district because their students were sent home without notifying the parents first. the district denies as they said all parents were notified in advance, and some parents were upset their students couldn't stay on the campus, and they feel like unvaccinated students were treated differently than vaccinated. the school denies this, and the superintendent said the guidelines are hard to navigate especially when you are dealing with some students vaccinated and some that are not. >> there was a lack of clarity

regarding when that date was when a student needed to be tested in order to return. again, it was not the intention of the amazing staff there. they were under a significant amount of pressure so i want to state that publicly. we take responsibility for the fact that that process did not go well and we were on the phone with public health to say we need to work through this. >> in a statement to the mercury news, the district wrote that the students were sent home due to the fact that they did not have the appropriate documentation on file with the school in order to remain on campus, but, again, denied students were separated by vaccination status. it's not clear how long the students must remain off campus. reporting live in danville, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. nbc bay area has a new resource for you to find out how many students are sick in schools near you. i want to bring in kris sanchez with a look at that. >> i get that anxiety from the

parents. my kids have been back in school for about a week now and we already got a notice from the high school and middle school, a notice saying your child was not a close contact but there had been a case at school. i understand parents wanting to know the latest information, and we have been trying to compile it for you. we compiled a dashboard district by district on nbcbayarea.com. the trending bar is across the top right here. if you click on covid-19 dashboard, it will bring up what we have done to keep the cases together district by district. some districts are maintaining a covid dashboard although they are no longer required to by the state. anything in the blue, they have something put up. however, some districts are choosing not to compile that

iran. prime minister naftali bennett is making his first state visit overseas since taking office, and he met with the secretary of state anthony blinken. other topics may include the pandemic, climate change and economic concerns. happening today, oakland police chief armstrong plans to reveal more details about a police shooting that injured a man that happened yesterday afternoon on enterprise way near the coliseum. the man shot was not seriously injured but he was wanted for manslaughter. authorities in fremont not identifying the suspect shot and killed by police yesterday. this is near fremont boulevard and auto parkway. a gun was recovered nearby. reports indicate that he may be tied to a shooting that seriously injured somebody at a nearby mobile home park.

it's still not clear if the suspect fired at officers but police are reviewing the body cam video. a plan calls for incentives or payments when addicts test negative for drugs. the money would come in a gift card. the cost on the program depends on how many people participate, but a program covering 1,000 people could cost as much as $286,000. east of chico gradually getting a handle on the fire of the dixie fire. more evacuation orders are being lifted in plumas county. the dixie fire burned some 30,000 acars and the structures destroyed at 1,300. the city of berkeley trying to get more people repaired, so

he made more than 1,000 pounds of pulled pork sandwiches for firefighters battling the dixie fire. >> yeah, that's really nice to see. >> yeah. >> just giving back. >> and his food is good, too. >> yeah. working hard for the weekend. those firefighters, boy, they need relief, kari. >> yes, they do. we are trying to stop the forward progress of the caldor fire. let me show you the parameter, all shaded in red. it shows how much has burned over the past 12 days, i think, at this point. this fire has spread so rapidly, and we are really concerned about the weather conditions for this upcoming weekend, because not only will it turn hotter but we're mapping it out and it's just 14 miles from the leading edge of the fire to the tahoe basin, and we don't want it to spread that far because we know a lot of people live there and

it's very important to our economy. we're going to be watching that for the weekend while we here in the bay area will be heating up. today warmer than yesterday, not too bad. low to mid-80s for the south bay. as we head to the east bay, 94 degrees in antioch today so the air-conditioner going back on. 81 in fremont today. near the coast we are still keeping it cool with 60s here. up to 82 in palo alto. san francisco will be headed towards the mid-60s, and upper 60s for downtown in the mission district. our north bay temperatures reaching into the mid-90s for ukiah, and sonoma, expect a high of 89 degrees. as our temperatures come up, we'll also see more smoke. once again today it's not too bad for the coast and parts of the inner bay. moderate air quality for the north bay and then tomorrow the

map turns red and that shows unhealthy air quality and a lot more smoke, and you will need to stay in this weekend and find fresh air. let's check out our inland spots. in an area like livermore where we have the hotter temperatures typically, we will head up into the 90s by tomorrow and then 101 by saturday. do plan on it being a hot weekend and we see the temperatures coming down a little more for the middle of next week. overall we look at an average of temperatures reaching into the upper 90s for spots like brentwood and gilroy and ukiah, and then next week heading back into the mid-80s while san francisco will see highs in the 70s. we will have a lot more smoke coming in, and that's going to be of concern. heading over to you, mike, we are seeing so far smooth roads out there? >> yeah, getting to the bay
