across parts of northern california. the caldor fire continuing to grow. and then smoke in the bay area due to the fires, and this morning how you can protect yourself and your loved ones. this is "today in the bay." 6:00 now on thursday morning. thank you so much for joining us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we begin in downtown san jose. this is where hundreds of people forced to get out of their homes after a gas main break. they are still not home this morning and the streets closed that could impact your commute this morning. >> how long are they going to wait as this break happened yesterday. it's causing problems in the south bay. we will check in with mike in moments to get around the area with the roads closed, and first

let's start out with kris sanchez. any progress on fixing this? >> reporter: well, we hope they are making progress, and the goal was to have that capped by midnight but the barricades are still in place and hundreds of people are waking up someplace else, they are out of their homes. crews also have to repair holes they dug to vent the gas that leaked here in the area. according to pg&e, a third party contractor hit that line and ruptured it. the evacuation order is expected to continue through 8:00 this morning. the baskin community center is open for folks that needed shelter but one evacuee told us it's inconvenient.

>> it's not that bad. it's not like a disaster a. fire or people dying, houses burning or floods -- it's only get out of your house. >> reporter: now this evacuation area is a ten-block parameter, so there are a lot of folks who are out of their homes this morning. the work here continues, but if you have business in this area there are a couple schools in the area you may have to reroute, though the neighborhood streets are the ones that seem to be the most impacted. mike is tracking that. the good news, mike, the big thoroughfares look to be easygoing. >> that's right. we were not sure if the perimeters were closed, and i just got off the phone with a gal over at the mcdonald's across the road from the evacuation parameter right here on west san carlos, and she said there's no problem driving past

mcdonald's and safeway and the shopping center, and this is just south of st. leo, the school over there as well. we are looking at meridian and lincoln and those are the perimeters of the closure. that gas leak is being taken care of at race and park. the evacuation still in place and the gas line still being addressed, but west san carlos, meridian, lincoln, they are all open for business as we understand. back to you. >> thanks, mike. students at one middle school will wear blue to honor a classmate that died yesterday at delta vista middle school. he died when a car he was in was struck by a freight train at east cyprus road and main street in oakley, about one block from the school.

a 19-year-old woman behind the wheel was critically injured. all the crossing signals were operating correctly. >> so sad. new this morning, santa rosa looking to cash in on a flood of unregistered short-term rentals. city leaders are asking for feedback on an ordinance that may take effect in october. residents can fill out an online survey. one study shows there are more than 350 short-term rental properties in the city but only half are registered and along with the revenue argument there are concerns that unregistered rentals are in fire prone areas. firefighters are battling a new out-of-control wildfire 30 miles east of stockton, and they are calling it the areola fire. it quickly grew to 1,000 acres. schools in that area will be closed today. schools are closed again today in the tahoe area as

firefighters try to hold their ground on the caldor fire. it has now burned more than 125,000 acres, and containment did grow to 12% last night. the flames have destroyed 600 structures and the quality of the air has been horrible in the tahoe basin. >> a lot of the smoke will be headed to the bay area for thousands of people in the bay area, boy, feeling some of the impacts from the smoke as well. we're looking outside this morning at smoky skies, and we hope the relief is coming for no cost air filters provided for the first time ever from an unusual source. cierra johnson has more information on who is behind it and how you can secure yours. >> reporter: yeah, kari has been talking all morning about how we can expect to see some of the smoke come into our area.

we have been talking about the fires and in the bay area we know all too well how difficult it can be to breathe when there are fires surrounding us. there's an organization looking to give away thousands of air systems to those that are low income and those with respiratory issues. the bay area air quality management district, and the devices are available for shelters and cooling centers and prioritized residents that are low income and with respiratory systems. they plan to live stream on how-to on creating a clean air room for your home. you can apply today beginning at 10:30. this is happening at the san jose women's club on 75 south

11th street in san jose, and there are a few parking spots in the back. at this moment right now there are no immediate air quality issues in the bay area. kari has been talking about it all morning, and we can expect to have air quality issues approaching so this could be a great opportunity for folks to prepare for when that does happen. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thanks. let's get a look at the forecast for you. meteorologist, kari hall, working hard. and the air quality is something we continue to talk about with the fires burning, and the air filters will be a good addition there, and this weekend how is it looking? >> this weekend it will be smoky so we need to limit our time outside and turn on the air-conditioning inside. it's a fairly good day to get out and spend more time in the outdoor areas doing the outdoor activities for the coast and south bay, the air quality will

be good. moderate elsewhere and not too bad compared to what we have coming this weekend. as we mentioned, we'll talk about that in a bit. you will notice temperatures today are much warmer this afternoon. concord, temperatures in the mid-50s for the morning commute. you can see how quickly the temperatures are climbing and heading towards the low 80s by early in the afternoon, essentially heading up to the low 90s as we look at all of our microclimates, and the valleys going to be much hotter. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike, what are you watching for the morning commute? >> we are watching the span because right here still the slow lane is blocked. the flat tire on the rig or truck blocking the slow lane, and you see that bunching up before that but, and if you are coming out of the east bay like most people traveling across it's jammed up.

the hov lanes were moving and that means there's some relief on the incline and the crew is taking care of the flat tire blocking your slow lane, and it's a smooth drive if you are heading north from berkeley over to here. we're building out of pittsburg, and the rest of the bay looking good, just a closure at park and race for that gas leak. and then fairfield dance troop celebrating this morning. yes, they were awesome! they represented the bay area on "america's got talent." last night they moved on to the semifinals. they are also part of our nbc bay area family. our own reporter, she's rooting for her two sons on the team.

air quality coming up. another slowdown, and one lane blocked on the bay bridge and slow up the incline, and the toll plaza unusually heavy at this time of the morning. and also another alternate route is having a problem. the futures and dow up 37 points. the s&p 500 pretty flat right now as the record levels head into the fed summit coming up. big tech companies, they are promising to boost cyber security after their ceos met with president biden yesterday. this comes after a series of high profile cyberattacks on targets including the colonial pipeline. google will spend $10 billion over the next five years to train 100,000 people in the field, and we are talking about i.t. support and data analytics. microsoft committing $20 billion to advance security tools and

worse. hot inland temperatures for today, and not too bad for the south bay. low 80s for san jose. upper 80s for gilroy this afternoon. for the east bay this is where the heat is cranking up in the low to mid-90s, and antioch reaching 94 today. in hayward, expect a high of 80. for the coast, this is where you can find cooler temperatures. remains in the 60s here for daly city, and low 80s for palo alto. san francisco reaching into the upper 60s today. 67 in the mission district. our north bay temperatures reaching in the 90s, and as our temperatures go up we will start the see more smoke coming in. not too bad today, just enough of an ocean breeze to keep a good air quality near the coastline and the south bay, and the inland area looking more hazy today, and tomorrow we will need to limit our time outside

because of the heat and also the smoke. look how bright red the map is. the winds will shift and bring the smoke from the fires our direction. the tpha fires burning around the tahoe basin, they are moving closer. with the unhealthy air quality, you may be wondering what would it take to see the orange sky we saw last year at this time. what happened was that smoke was close by and did not allow the shorter wave lengths to come through the atmosphere, and what we got was the long waves where it was being reflected around the smoke and it was red to orange everywhere because of the smoke, and that's because the fires were closer, our

temperatures are heating up going into the season. gilroy, it will reach into the mid-90s for the weekend there. mike, what are you watching for the morning commute? >> the long waves, kari, the delay across the bridge. a truck got a flat tire early, and it was around 4:30 this morning, and i thought it would resolve quickly but it's still there. the backup at the toll plaza is filled in, including the hov so not a big advantage there. richmond bridge, just starting the backup there. the rest of the bay moves pretty well but we are looking at one of the alternates, the san mateo bridge, and slowing shows up close to the peninsula. back to you. >> thanks, mike. next here on "today in the

their teacher had covid they left in tears and were forced out. talk about what the district is saying this morning? >> reporter: charlotte middle school sent a number of sixth graders home after their vaccinated teacher came down with covid-19. some parents are now angry with the school district because their students were sent home without notification of the parents first. the district denies that happened and said all parents were notified in advanced, and some parents were upset their children could not stay on campus given they were masked, and the superintendent apologized at this week's board meeting for the confusion and admitted the guidelines put out are hard to navigate.

>> there was a lack of clarity regarding when that date was when a student needed to be tested in order to return. again, it was not the intention of the amazing staff there. they were under a significant amount of pressure and i want to state that publicly. we take responsibility for the fact that process did not go well and we were on the phone with public health to say we need to work through this. >> reporter: in a statement to the "mercury news," the district wrote students were sent home due to the fact they did not have the appropriate documentation on file at school to remain on campus, and they were separated by vaccination status, and it's not clear how long they will have to remain off campus. >> thank you. our team coverage continues with today in the bay's kris

sanchez. there's a new way for parents to track covid infections in their school district. >> reporter: yeah, it's nerve-racking as a parent, and i have already received two note tuesdays for my kids' schools, and information and transparency is good, and we are compiling covid dash boards available for our local school districts into one place, and it's at nbcbayarea.com. if you click on covid-19 dashboards at the top, it will take you there and that is where you will be able to find your school district if they are maintaining their covid dashboard. they are no longer required to maintain the dash boards by the state but the ones that are will be in blue. you will see those there and will be able to click on them. we have alameda county, and all

northern california. >> kids spent time in poverty from 10 to 16, they actually had a disrupted response to stress. >> researchers tested cord asaul levels in 17 years olds, and when a stress is consistent the cortisol levels are lower. california may be ready to try a new strategy to fight drug addiction, actually paying people to stay sober. the plan calls for incentives when addicts test negative for drugs. the money would come on a gift card. the cost of the program depends on how many participate. the caldor fire is now burning within about -- excuse

me, 11 miles of the tahoe basin and the flames have scorched 126,000 acres. it's 12% contained now and schools in the tahoe area will be closed again today. the air quality still some of the worst anywhere right now anywhere in the world. business owners, it has been a huge blow. also happening now, firefighters east of chico are getting more of a handle on the dixie fire. the containment grew to 43%. evacuation orders are being lifted to plumas county. the number of structures destroyed stands at nearly 1,300. right now, sonoma county's own chef is once again serving up meals to the brave firefighters battling the fires. check out the photos posted to twitter earlier this week. he made more than 1,000 pounds

you won't be able to escape the smoke even if you are going to l.a., and they are dealing with smoky conditions and temperatures in the 80s. and for papaso robles, staying outside not advised for a long time. we'll talk about hot inland temperatures and our air quality coming up in a few minutes. mike, what is going on with the roads? >> this is going to be a tough drive this time of day in contra costa county. i think there may be a blown tire and tire on the roadway south 680, and both of the avenues are tough. coming off highway 4 really jamming up now. the alert was in place by chp and a couple lanes blocked there and that will add to the build for highway 4 that kicks in now.

britain stopped flights in and out because of the threat from isis, a splinter group from isis in afghanistan, and the state department issued a security alert and they are warning about certain gates there at the airport for a potential attack. outside the problem continues to be the taliban and they're tightening grip on the city. roughly 1,500 americans still in afghanistan according to the state department and 500 of those do have information and details about how to get to the airstrip, and 1,000 still have not been able to make contact and officials are trying to do that. the u.s. military still flying in and out and the flights slowed down because of the threat. a former u.s. interpreter said things are tightening down on those trying to leave the country. >> it's not an airport, it's the front line war. i have been in the war a lot and have seen a lot of gunfire and

things like this with the americans, and i have never seen something like that, never. >> look, the crowds are continuing to gather at that airport despite the pushback outside and the threat of problems around the airport. that speaks to the desperation of so many afghans that want to get out of the country. the white house says it will do whatever is necessary at this point to make sure that they can get americans and those afghans who worked with the americans in the field over the last two decades out. they say even if it's beyond the deadline. >> right. so jay let's talk about that, has there been any discussion about what happens if everybody is not able to get out by tuesday? >> there has been discussion internally but not a lot we're getting information on and you can understand why, they don't want to share that strategy. the pentagon and state department working on conten

had to leave his father behind and he said he is feeling helpless and guilty because now he can't get to his father. >> happening today, a call to congress to support the evacuations in afghanistan. one council member will hold a virtual conference about protecting girls and women in afghanistan and they are calling on congress address the resettlement program. >> go to nbcbayarea.com and there you will find stories about the latest history. and then check your bank account. the governor's office saying that nearly two-thirds of those living here in the state are eligible for a $600 check, and some families will get an additional $500. the governor signed a bill in july for those hit the hardest

the smoke from the fire making its way into the bay area, and i was looking at tips for folks to get ahead of things, and just start with shutting your windows to stop any of the smoke from coming in. another, one of my favorites, cut back on some of the chores, and that means not dusting or vacuuming, because some of the dust that kicks up could further aggravate your lungs and the air quality. if you have n95 masks at home, find them and pull them out and get ready for the smoke headed our way. another organization is stepping up and providing free portable air filtration systems for some folks here in the bay area. the bay area air quality management district are providing the filtration systems.

the air quality district has information on social media pages on how to apply and they plan to live stream a how-to on creating a clean air room in your home and that could be crucial with some of the smoke coming in. you can apply beginning this morning at 10:30 down in san jose at the san jose women's club at 75 south 11th street. there's street parking and limited parking in the back of that building. right now as it stands, no air quality warnings right now, and kari has been letting us know all morning that that could quickly change with the wind shift as well as some of the fires in the surrounding areas. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." let's check in with kari right now and talk about the heat moving into the bay area this weekend. >> yeah, we have a lot of changes headed our way. we have cooler to normal weather

and at times good air quality for parts of the bay area but now with the shift of wind headed our way and more smoke we will see changes for this weekend. as we get a live look outside we still see our typical low clouds, our marine layer to start out in san francisco. that will keep temperatures cool there. if you are heading out for a morning workout, get it in early in spots like napa. low 80s by 1:00 today. let's look at our microclimates. the south bay, not too bad with low 80s. upper 80s for the south county. for the east bay, oakland temperatures reaching into the upper 70s compared to the upper 60s. some of the spots will be about ten degrees hotter compared to yesterday. antioch reaching 94 this afternoon. palo alto, we will see temperatures there in the low 80s. san francisco headed towards the upper 60s. for the north bay, this is what we are going to start to feel some of the heat further to the

north, 94 degrees with sonoma's high temperatures reaching 90. we have enough of an ocean breeze to keep it fairly fresh for the coastline but look how read the map turns for tomorrow as we see the smoke settling in. it does look like the smoke lingers for the weekend. mike, you have been tracking breaking news. what is the update we have changes for the positive, the span looks like it has been cleared. still an innocent on the chp kad, but it's moving now. the disabled vehicle is removed from the span, and i believe the richmond bridge still slow. the build here is all clear here from the earlier crash so now we have the normal traffic slow south of there. happening now, california

update from firefighters. >> reporter: yeah, we know this morning the evacuation orders will remain in effect and it's going to be expanded, so not only is it not going to be lifted at 8:00, that evacuation order will run through at least the noon hour and will include 15 more homes in that evacuation order. this has been going on in this neighborhood near the sap center since 10:00 yesterday morning, and according to pg&e the third party contract hit that line and no injuries have been reported but about 340 homes and businesses now are under evacuation order, and that is 15 more than yesterday. the community center is open for anybody that needs assistance. we know this is a ten-block area now that is under evacuation orders, so if you have business in the area of the rose garden
