4:30 am
breaking news, the caldor fire has reached the tahoe basin. this morning it's burning hot and fierce. the winds are roaring pushing the flames even closer to south lake tahoe. a red flag warning will be in effect later today. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to speak live with a firefighter in that area in just a moment. >> first let's check in with kari hall. set the scene for us. what are we in store weather wise for us today? they really look at those conditions. >> the wind was kicking up yesterday and that fanned the flames and caused it to spread farther. the red dots indicate where we
4:31 am
are seeing active fires burning. according to my estimates some of the leading edges of the fire is only at about 4 miles away from south lake tahoe and you can see that we are seeing this, it's been very erratic because some of the embers kicking up can kick those new fires off about a mile away from some of the very active flames and fires we've seen over the past 24 hours. red flag warning as you mentioned going up. they actually extended it from today at 11:00 to 11:00 tomorrow evening. it does look like these conditions will persist where we're getting these west/southwest early winds at about 20 to 35 miles per hour but may be isolated gusts up to 50 miles per hour. it's really going to be dangerous here. we're in this critical timeframe where we could see this spreading very quickly towards south lake tahoe. laura and marcus. >> all right. thank you very much. now let's bring in dominic,
4:32 am
a firefighter working with cal fire joining us over the phone this morning. he's in that area. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. >> good morning. >> so tell me, chief, what are you up against today? i know this has been such a fire fight? >> yeah. this is a difficult one. as you were saying with the weather we're running against some very difficult weather in the red flag warning. the permission of the fuels are very low. the wind is definitely against us and it's very hot and for those of you that have been to tahoe, part of its beauty is in the steep terrain surrounding the lake which gives it the gorgeous backdrop, but the terrain makes it very difficult for us especially out here once it gets into those drainages and on the steep terrain, all that heat rising in the canyons draws air from the basin to the canyons to replace that hot air going up and it basically creates its own fire weather and
4:33 am
it's been proving difficult for our firefighters. >> that's one of the big dangers we talk about is the weather that these fire create in itself. it has been spreading so fast and do you see it even going up the west shore today? how are you mapping it out? >> yeah. we can't predict how far it will go today, but as you did say, it has been spotting three quarter to a mile, just made it very difficult and dangerous because it puts the fire at times in front and behind our firefighters, so we have a lot of people fighting as well as you'll notice on some of the footage, you'll see firefighters with their backs to the fire and that's because they're looking forward watching for those and that spotting has made it difficult. especially when it gets into the crown which is where the fire goes up the trees and runs in the crowns, it's been going up
4:34 am
to sometimes up to 165 feet a minute through the crown fire. >> when you're dealing with all of this, how did you plan to move forward? like what is that process of how to attack the fire now? >> yeah. i wish we could say that attacking it was what we're doing. now we're kind of just following it and trying to protect those that are in the way, move people out of the way and then we do what's called a fire front following, which is as the fire moves through these communities, before they get there, we send in crews to prep and do as much clearance to the homes that are in the path and as the fire goes through we basically are following it and then putting out the little fires in those communities that will eventually ignite the homes or different structures in that area. >> soso many cabins along the
4:35 am
lake. i can't help but notice you sound exhausted and it is understandable. how are the firefighters keeping up? do you have enough firefighters to fight this? >> no, i don't think anyone has enough firefighters for anything right now. everyone's donating their resources where they can and we're -- i mean this is california. we're stretched thin every summer. everyone is doing their best and working really hard. >> is there anything that people can do to help you all out? i'm sure if they're asked to evacuate, certainly get out, but is there anything that people can do to help? >> just like you said, yesterday, if you saw any of the evacuation foot ablg, it was gridlock getting everyone out. if a warning comes to your area, please have your go bag ready, get your prescriptions and important papers and pets, have everything ready to go if you're in that warning area.
4:36 am
then when the evacuation order comes takes off. >> we're wishing you the best. all on the frontlines. thanks so much for taking the time to join us this morning. good luck. >> you got it. thank you. now we want to bring in cheryl hurd, she's in south lake tahoe with another update on the situation there. >> reporter: there's a huge glow in the sierra, flames moving fast into towns in south lake tahoe. fire crews are here taking a time. the fire raced over echo summit into christmas valley and there are homes scattered in those hills. crews chasing spot fires, protecting homes. we watched firefighters turn on sprinklers as a form of protection in some areas. south lake tahoe's mayor says she realized early people had to evacuate. she's worried about keeping homes and businesses safe from looters. >> we've got heavy patrols in the area that have been evacuated.
4:37 am
>> reporter: there was a line of cars leaving the area. everyone leaving at the same time. >> we have fire and police people, police personnel from all over the state, 300, 400 miles away. >> position the snow guns to blow water on the building. >> reporter: john is the general manager of the sierra at tahoe resort. he had to evacuate twice in two days. >> i've had to rebuild when i lost a house in an earthquake in 1992 and rebuild from that and start over. we've been through it and it's not fun. a wildfire is a little different. >> reporter: flames are moving through dry vegetation while the wind is keeping crews where to go next. >> a lot of our season passholders and locals that love coming up and we're ready to serve them this year. it might look a little different but we're ready to serve. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today

springs. our cameras have been giving us even at nighttime how it looks like there. here's how the fire spreads and creates its own weather. the heat from the fires generating updraft so it goes up high into the atmosphere. and then from that, you get these gusty winds coming out of that. the cooler air starts to sink downward and it causes the wind to shift. once again, making its own weather. it becomes very gusty and you see the embers flowing away from that a mile away from some of the flames that are burning. it just creates even more fires out ahead of that. and so now we're looking at the overall weather conditions, the red flag warning, where those winds are going to be picking up. 20 to 35 miles per hour. the fuel is extremely dry and we also have some rain happening in southern california. that's making the wind even more erratic. as we're seeing the surge of
