5:00 am
caldor fire advancing towards homes in south lake tahoe. the latest on the efforts to contain it in time. >> conditions are expected to worsen with concerns growing about hard to read wind shifts. we're following all the overnight developments. this is "today in the bay." tough to see that video because it is burning so fiercely out there. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we start with that breaking news right now for you. some unbelievable images coming out of south lake tahoe this morning of evacuations and flames and the worst may be still to come. >> kris sanchez is following the latest developments on this fire fight to try to keep it at bay. the flames are fierce. >> there's not a lot the firefighters can do right now. it is burning unchecked this morning out of control driven by winds and fed by dry fuels. this is the reason 56,000 had to
5:01 am
flee south lake tahoe and the surrounding area. the tahoe basin. flames moving into small towns nearby just picking up cabins as it went along and people as they were packing up some of them were leaving on sprinklers on hoping they would have something to come back to. in the last half hour a firefighter told us that south lake tahoe's scenic terrain is part of the issue and part of the reason firefighters can really do little more than watch. >> i wish we could say that attacking it was what western doing. right now we're just kind of following it and trying to protect those that are in the way, move people out of the way. >> these are images from photographer matthew henderson of the fire in the evacuation areas and today there could be more people trying to get out as evacuation warnings are now in effect extending into nevada. the evacuation area past the state line that includes douglas
5:02 am
county, though not the casinos there at this point. you may have seen those really long lines of evacuees stuck in traffic trying to leave. it is a good reminder that there's no need to wait for a warning to become an order. laura. >> and the evacuation orders are changing by the hour. let's get a detailed map of the impacted neighborhoods, head to nbcbayarea.com and our team will also try to tweet those out to keep you informed. let's check in with kari because we're talking about the wind conditions up there. the tahoe basin can get fierce ones through there. >> yes. even because we've been talking about the winds picking up, this fire is just so fierce that it's making its own weather and spreading regardless of what kind of weather conditions are around it. these dots show the active fires as well as the areas that have already burned. if it's red, this is where those fires are spreading. notice that there's space in between these. we have seen it kind of jumping,
5:03 am
spreading out farther because of those embers that are being blown by those higher winds. then you map the distance from the leading edge of those active fires to south lake tahoe and some of our estimates are about four miles. that's too close. take a look at this live snapshot i took at the sierra at tahoe resort. some of these beautiful places we've all visited, right now just lit up orange with flames that are burning out of control and just tearing through these beautiful areas. as we get a look at the red flag warning that has been extended from this evening to tomorrow, they do think these weather conditions will remain unfavorable for the fire fight as we go into today as well as throughout the day tomorrow. so we can see these winds at times picking up to about 20 to 35 miles per hour. some of those occasional gusts up to 50. those firefighters just have to get out of the way because this is just too dangerous to fight at this point.
5:04 am
>> it is tough to see. it is very tough. thank you very much. moving on to other news, another tough story with so many lives lost, developing in afghanistan, americas a longest war finally over. the withdrawal of u.s. troops complete along with the largest airlift evacuation. >> it shows the last soldier to leave afghanistan. christopher donahue there, commander of the 82nd airborne division, he was the last on board to fly that final plane leaving kabul yesterday. the final military flights took off just before midnight in kabul ending a chaotic scramble to transport americans and allies as the taliban militants swept back into power more than 123,000 people were evacuated, including roughly 6,000 americans. >> and as that two decades long war comes to an end, it is bringing with it a range of
5:05 am
emotions for afghans in the bay area. we traveled to market to get reaction to this moment in history. some are hopeful for a new beginning. some are not. one man we spoke with says the taliban killed close family members right in front of him when he was a boy. he wishes the u.s. would have stayed longer to evacuate more people. >> a lot of people like me. >> multiple international organizations are mobilizing to help evacuate additional people telling afghans who want to leave to shelter in place until they have more information. remember coverage continues our digital platforms, nbcbayarea.com for the latest, chick on afghanistan attack up in the trending bar. 5:05. now to new pandemic related data. this is on global hospitalization rates. research published in one infectious disease journal finds those infected with the delta variant are twice as likely to
5:06 am
end up in hospitals. this is compared to those infected with the british alpha variant. now researchers found that 74% of those hospitalized were unvaccinated. so here's a look the at how the bay area is actually stacking up against the rest of the state when it comes to vaccinations. so the cdc says that roughly 80% of all eligible residents statewide have gotten at least one dose and about 65% are fully vaccinated. now in the bay area, eight of the nine bay area counties are higher than that. some like marin and san mateo and santa clara and san francisco have at least 80% of residents fully vaccinated. the only county behind the vaccination rate solano county. 74% right there that have received at least one dose, which only about 61% is getting both right now. today the city of vallejo will reconsider reinstating the indoor mask mandate after benicia moved forward with its
5:07 am
own mandate. solano county is the only county in the bay area that doesn't have one. they will have a special meeting to discuss that proposal. and back to our breaking news for you this morning. we are tracking that breaking news this is near lake tahoe. the caldor fire causing evacuation orders for south lake tahoe and people there in that fire zone are tweeting and using social media to show what that situation is like. as you can see right there, many people showing just the destruction and the damage and the glow of that fire as it continues to ramg on. >> the roads have been clogged as evacuees try to get out. happening today national forests in california will be off limits to anyone coming in. all visitors. that means the upcoming labor day holiday weekend as well. no visits going on there. the u.s. forest service made the announcement yesterday citing public safety and strained firefighting resources. we heard that from the firefighter we talked to live this morn the closure will start at noon today. the air quality conditions up there anyway, it is so unhealthy
5:08 am
to be breathing that in. >> you wouldn't want to go. meteorologist kari hall you've been monitoring all of this for us. are we going to see any change with the shift in wind to clear some of the smoke out? >> i think it's going to be better to stay at home. we are seeing improvements in our air quality here as we take a look at our surface smoke model forecast. we are still looking at some drifts of smoke in parts of the south bay and east bay but we are expecting it to get better going into the afternoon once the westerly wind picks up we often see during the afternoon. it continues to look pretty good for the next couple days. you may see that smoke returning to the north bay by tomorrow afternoon. but these fires once again spreading all of that smoke across the bay area, across the state. and it will most likely continue, especially if you do travel off towards the east. our temperatures today coming down thanks to that breezy ocean breeze that's going to be picking up today. in santa rosa, we're heading toward 81 today.
5:09 am
still hot in antioch reaching 91 but that's an improvement over the triple digits we had yesterday. mike, you're updating a crash in san jose. >> also an improvement on the triple digits, 680, the slowing we saw that has cleared up. still a crash, though, in the grid. here's north bay 680 at alum rock avenue. the crash involves five vehicles, four of them have to be transported. i heard about injuries now. there have been five people who have been transported to hospitals or for medical treatment through the area. don't have any word on the extent and no major injuries reported but again, five people have been transported from the scene and still activity. at least four vehicles. need the tow trucks to arrive. there will be a distraction once they arrive as well. the south bay no problem from there. easy flow of traffic through the east bay and no problems for the east bay itself. contra costa county a great drive. highway 4 at the limit here. the crash north of the benicia bridge on northbound 680 is not a problem but it is a note, construction up here at the 680

. good tuesday morning. 5:13, heading out the door in the east bay it's mild in walnut creek are we are starting out right now at 64 degrees. breezy wind and it's going to be a cooler day. slow warmup as we see improved air quality. air quality is a big issue. we're going to talk about how wildfire smoke affects children coming up in a few minutes. these folks right here are crossings the san mateo bridge. notice at the bottom of the screen you see the flashing red light. nothing to be concerned about. a crew in the area and that typically happens around the bridge. i'll let you know if there's anything to alarm you. let's check in with see ma.

>> good morning. i'm seema mody for cnbc. stocks on wall street set to open higher. it's the last trading day of the month and it's been a positive one with the s&p 500 on track to close by 3% higher. the nasdaq up around 4% thanks to better than expected earnings which, of course, has provided strength to this market. in focus today, two economic reports. one is on home prices and the other on consumer confidence. zoom may be losing some of its zoom. the video conferencing service reporting more than a billion dollars in quarterly sales for the first time, but the company signaling demand that sky rocketed during the pandemic is slowing as vaccinations are encouraging schools to reopen and companies to bring employees back to the office. zoom also facing more competition from the likes of cisco's webex and microsoft teams denting its efforts to win bigger contracts from business. on to the iphone, more details are emerging about the rumored satellite feature in the
5:15 am
new iphone allowing you to contact someone in an area without cell service. bloomberg reporting the technology may be only available for emergencies such as contacting police, fire, or rescue by text message. sources say there could be a second tool to report major incidents such as a plane crash or a sinking ship that will also use satellite network. just gives you a sense of some of the technology that could potentially be out there. the next iphone expected to debut this september. laura, back to you. >> can't believe there's 13 now. >> all right. >> all right. thank you very much. new this morning, a big commitment to help san francisco and oakland schools courtesy of salesforce. the company announced plans to donate nearly $20 million for global education. that includes twin $7.5 million donations to public schools in san francisco and oakland. the money will address some of the inequities under privileged

students are facing in the wake of the pandemic. if you're in the market for a new home in the south bay, well you now can purchase one from a san jose sthashgs hockey player. the mercury news reports evander kane selling his home in willow glen. the listing price $3.2 million. kane is going through a twors with his ex-wife or with his estranged wife who also laid out some damaging allegations against him. he also filed for bankruptcy in june. 5:16. want to switch gears and check in with mike monitoring some traffic troubles out there. >> there was a crash in the south bay. let's take you out to the maps and show you -- kari, you show them. >> san jose. the crash over there as we're traveling north bay on 680 at alum rock. we have that crash still on the grid and i think they still have to move the four vehicles from the shoulder but the slowing we saw has been cleared. the people have been transported to get help medley and no major
5:17 am
injuries from what the report says. the peninsula moving smoothly, no problems across the bridges and over here, 680 has reopened right on schedule for that overnight closure through alvarado. this is another construction point here. look at the north bay side away from 580 towards brentwood, discovery bay there is slowing here. my buddy told me just like last week, we did have slowing because of traffic control. when he drove through the area this morning, so this may be a continued issue. we'll follow that and see if that causes a big problem. so far mild and it is counter commute so this just is causing a problem for folks trying to get up into discovery bay but not down to 580. a smooth flow of traffic here. the crash not a problem for the drivers up there in benicia. the bay bridge an easy flow. there was slowing that showed up on 101 to the golden gate bridge, but i think it was an early morning crew. they do a great job and actually it's a beautiful clear view. >> another view in san francisco. let's get a look at the bay bridge as we're starting out this morning. we are seeing some of the low clouds over us but not affecting
5:18 am
the visibility. we have a good start to our day. while we have our typical start to an august morning, take a look at all of the rain that's happening across parts of southern california. this is the remnants of a tropical system causing a surge of monsoonal moisture. it's been a record wet year, wet summer for arizona, so it's been pretty crazy to see all the storms moving through there. then as we bring it back home we're still all dry here. but at least our temperatures are coming down. we're headed towards the upper 70s and low 80s today. san jose reaching 80 degrees. 83 in morgan hill. moving over towards the east bay, walnut creek topping out at 80 today. it still will be hot in antioch reaching 91, 84 in pleasanton and breezy in oakland 80 degrees there. upper 70s in san mateo and downtown san francisco up to about 74 degrees. novato pretty warm reaching into the mid 90s. it's going to be hot farther to the north with ukiah up to 103.
5:19 am
take a look at our temperatures for antioch reaching 83 degrees today. and then much cooler tomorrow. so it does look great to see that cool down, but it will heat up once again going towards the end of the weekend. our seven-day forecast, shows that we'll see some mid 80s for today. kind of an average of some of our inland temperatures. coming down tomorrow, thursday, looking nice. breezy winds starting out with clouds and then you can see the heat up that will be on the way headed towards sunday and monday. san francisco is not going to see too many changes over the next few days. we're looking at highs in the mid to upper 60s with clouds and fog. now as we turn to our climate in crisis, you know, sometimes we're thinking do we want to send the kids outside and the fires are becoming common in summer and fall and struggling with whether or not to lets the kids play when the air quality is moderate or unhealthy. children can be highly affected by wildfire smoke. >> upper respiratory symptoms
5:20 am
like runny nose, itchy eyes scratchy throat and pneumonias, worsening asthma symptoms. we though that some of the pollutants in wildfire smoke can cause wide ranging other health effects that includes affects on obesity, problems with learning, and also increasing the risk of lung cancer later. >> dr. home does give us solutions to reducing exposure to wildfire smoke and you can sees the full interview and what she says on our climate in crisis page on nbcbayarea.com. laura and marcus. >> thanks, kari. coming up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> at home workout gives one of our viewers the runaround. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next. and our team always on social media so check out bob redell. he posted these pictures while out at a green day concert at oracle park over the weekend. this is the first major rock concert since the start of the pandemic. look at that. you can keep up with bob on

an update on our breaking news this morning. the caldor fire moving closer to south lake tahoe and putting that entire area under evacuation orders. so that fire only 15% contained. it's burned more than 177,000 acres, about 276 square miles to give you more perspective,
5:24 am
larger than the size of san jose and oakland combined. a red flag warning is now in effect. and nbc bay area responds to a south bay woman who is getting zero mileage out of her new elliptical. >> consumer investigator chris chmura and his team went the extra mile to help. >> good morning. you got to see the photos here. stephanie in san jose spent $200 on amazon for a sunny health and fitness elliptical. six months later it stopped working. she says the company told her to take a peek inside. ready for this, here what's she found. the belt completely shredded. the company didn't respond. week after week. stephanie asked us to step in. we did. sunny health then mailed a replacement part. stephanie says this is how it arrived. broken. fed up, she asked for a refund. sunny health declined saying our team is unable to provide refunds when the item is not purchased directly from us. okay. so we e-mailed amazon which then
5:25 am
returned stephanie's $200 and said, we work hard to provide customers with a great experience and deeply regret that this situation did not live up to our high standards. two keys here. first, when you pay a company through a third party like amazon, well that's an avenue for a refund. use it. and second, research a product's warranty when shopping. for example, sunny health's warranty covers an elliptical frame for three years but all other parts are covered only for the first six months. those details are important to know. look for them. if you have a consumer issue that has your heart rate up maybe we can help. go to nbcbayarea.com and click the responds option from the main menu or call us 888-996-tips. >> good advice there. >> coming up next, top stories we're following including breaking news, the caldor fire threatening homes in south lake tahoe. plus --

breaking at 5:30, flames from the caldor fire advancing into south lake tahoe. crews are up against it with fears the weather conditions are about to get worse. we are following the latest overnight with the developments. >> we're talking about fraud and
5:29 am
conspiracy. >> the much-anticipated fraud trial for theranos founder elizabeth holmes starts today in the south bay. we're live with what to expect in the days and weeks ahead. this is "today in the bay." a very good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. the caldor fire has been ravaging the lake tahoe basin area. hundreds of people are evacuating. want to check in with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez monitoring what's been going on there. >> yeah. there was so much to monitor overnight and that caldor fire is now burning unchecked still this morning, driven by winds and fed by dry fuels, really burning out of control. this is the reason why 56,000 people had to flee south lake tahoe and the surrounding area. the tahoe basin as flames moved in nearby and people packed up,
5:30 am
some leaving sprinkler on hoping they would have something to go back to. in the last hour, firefighter dominic toledo told us the scenic terrain is part of the problem. >> i wish we could say attacking is what we're doing. right now we're following it and trying to protect those that are in the way, move people out of the way. >> reporter: these are images from photographer matthew henderson of the fire in those evacuation areas. today, there could be more people trying to get out as evacuation warnings are now extending into nevada. you may have seen long lines of evacuees stuck in traffic trying to leave and that is a good reminder there is no need to wait for a warning to become an order before getting out. a warning to looters from the mayor of south lake tahoe says there's plenty of law enforcement in the area as well. >> thank you very much, kris.
5:31 am
here's a new video of one bay area viewer sent us from outside his vacation home in tahoe. you see the ashes that are falling, just how strong the winds are up there. they really pick up in the tahoe basin area. >> meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the path of the caldor fire. kari, what does it look like it's doing now as it continues to grow? >> it has just burned so much and we're seeing many more active fires that are continuing to spread in the easterly direction as well. we've also seen the southern edge of that spreading as well. this shows you where we have fires that are already burned in yellow and then the red shows the active fires and where it is still spreading. notice how these little boxes here are fairly spread apart and that's because those embers fly up and away from those big towering clouds from the smoke and fires and spreading the embers up to a mile out ahead of where the active fire is burpg.
5:32 am
we get more of the fires burning. as we map it on our little tool, it shows that it's about four miles from the leading edge of the active fire to south lake tahoe. that is not a very far distance when you see the flames just exploding like they are right now. this is leek springs off highway 88 and see how hot those flames are burning as it continues to tower up into the atmosphere. so what happens as that fire burns, that heat lifts up and we get what we call updraft and that's the pie row cumulus clouds that you see and it creates its own weather making erratic winds and the wind flows away from it and becomes gusty and then we get these long range spot fires out ahead of that. unfortunately, that's what we're worried about today and the reason they had to move all of those people out of the way as the winds pick up outside of these fires. really concerning here for the next couple days.
5:33 am
laura and marcus. >> you know the situation changing by the minute. we're monitoring across all of our social platforms throughout this newscast and throughout the day. follow nbc bay area twitter page for updates and breaking news e-mail alerts at nbcbayarea.com. new overnight, firefighters in south san francisco working to stop a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex. this video from citizens app showing some of that aftermath. it started around 2:00 a.m. on walnut street. crews are at the scene. no word on injuries. the cause of the fire still under investigation. happening today, the start of a criminal trial, silicon valley and financial world will be closely watching fraud trial involving one time high flying theranos founder elizabeth holmes. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us outside the federal courthouse and jury selection is getting under way in a matter of hours after months of delays on this. >> correct, laura and marcus. after months of delay due to the
5:34 am
pandemic and procedural issues, jury selection will finally begin at the federal courthouse behind me in downtown san jose in the trial of elizabeth holmes. as you'll recall, elizabeth homes became a star in silicon valley after dropping out of stanford at the age of 19 to start theranos. theranos, her company, claimed it built a machine to test for dozens of medical conditions using a single drop of blood. so much investor money came in at its peak, theranos was valued at $9 billion. but theranos machines did not work and many of the tests were inaccurate. at issue in this trial, did holmes lose hundreds of millions of dollars because her technology didn't pan out, or did she intentionally defraud investors, doctors, regulators and patients. >> there's a big difference in the potential penalty which could be 20 years in prison. if she was intentionally deceiving investors, the sec,
5:35 am
doctors and patients. >> reporter: according to recently discovered documents homes is going to claim that her former boyfriend ramesh balwani also a theranos executive was controlling and abusive during their relationship leading to issues with the company. balwani's attorney calls the allegations inflammatory, offensive and false and he is facing his own criminal trial. the department of justice says that holmes faces maximum penalties of 20 years in prison and a $2.75 million fine. reporting live in downtown san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. happening it today, santa clara county leaders are expected to request a no confidence vote for embattled sheriff laurie smith. two supervisors announced plans last week to introduce a resolution. it followed a similar statement from san jose mayor sam liccardo citing recent problems in county jails and the pay to play scandal involving concealed weapon permits. no confidence vote is largely symbolic.
5:36 am
supervisors do not have the power to remove an independently elected sheriff. smith has not issued a public response. and our investigative unit has been following this story from the start. for the latest visit nbcbayarea.com and click on our investigations tab at the top. turning to the pandemic the delta variant is fueling a surge in covid cases not seen since the darkest days of last winter. the u.s. has rocketed past 39 million confirmed cases, about a 10% of the entire population. dr. anthony fauci says the country could see another 100,000 deaths by december. hospitalizations are the highest in months with a daily average of 100,000 covid patients. a study from ucsf is adding urgency for the push for everyone to get their vaccination shots. researchers looked at 1300 bay area infections including a number of cases among the fully vaccinated. 78% of breakthrough cases
5:37 am
involved mutated variants like the delta variant. the study also implies that as long as there's a large number of unvaccinated people, covid will continue to mutate and vaccines are likely to be less effective against every mutation. >> your getting vaccination is key to our success as an economy to move forward to our success as a people to live the life that we aspire to. >> experts say even with the hyper contagious delta variant, vaccinated people are still five times less likely to be infected and more than 20 times less likely to get severely ill. more than 47 million people in california are fully vaccinated, more than any other state. governor newsom plans to mark that milestone later this morning in the east bay. >> east bay assemblywoman buffly wicks is pulling back on her proposal for a sweeping vaccine mandate that calls for vaccine or test requirements for all workers state wide and proof of vaccination rules for dining,

5:39 am
deaths with fears the numbers could still go higher. right now, there's a desperate effort to reach the hardest hit communities. hospitals as far away as baton rouge are opening up their doors for patients who cannot get care closer to home. >> our toughest days of this hurricane are in front of us. the number of people in medical need, the number of health care workers who really need to be supported through this time in order to just bring themselves up and take care of patients. >> of course this is a hospital that's already grappling with covid surge. new orleans, meanwhile, there are fears that the power may be out for weeks. you can watch that full story later this morning on the "today" show after "today in the bay." >> the heartaches those poor people are going through. hopefully get a little bit of relief weather wise. there's so much cleanup to do and no power for many. >> i mean, can you imagine being without power for weeks?
5:40 am
especially when it gets that hot and humid there. they're still seeing some of the rain bands moving through the new orleans area, so there's still off and on rain. the big part of the storm, the bulk of the storm has pushed to the east right now over alabama, heading towards georgia. we are seeing that rain spreading across that region. we like just a little bit of that as we are still dealing with some cool temperatures along the coast. it will be hot for the inland areas. wide range in temperatures here. antioch headed toward 91 degrees, but most of us in the 70s and 80s for the inland areas. santa rosa today will reach about 81 degrees. heading over to you, mike. you've been watching what's going on for the roads. >> pretty calm right now. still got my eyes over here. the south bay itself, we have your typical slowing north 101 and in that same area we've been tracking that crash which has had no updates. the two lanes that were blocked looked like they cleared and it looks like it's been the case ever since. five vehicles involved and still an active scene as far as chp is concerned. that slowing is on schedule for 101 and 680 up to oakland road.
5:41 am
the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive with the tri-valley, a mild build. no major problems for vasco road. i am looking at slowing. if that's your avenue out of or into brentwood that will be an issue. over here getting across into san francisco is moving smoothly but more traffic, more volume on the span. we'll take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza coming up. back to you. >> thank you. we continue to follow our breaking news in south lake tahoe, the flames starting to burn dangerously close to homes there. we'll have an update on the conditions ahead for you this morning. plus -- >> i'm here to announce the completion of our withdrawal from afghanistan. >> america's longest war is over, but troops still remain on the ground. what happens to them next.
