4:30 am
breaking right now at 4:30, a police investigation shutting down a major freeway overnight outside san francisco. we're there live. and good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us today. this friday morning here on "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez, i'm in for laura garcia. we want to get right to this breaking news that's happening in daly city. bob redell is there on the scene asking questions about what happened and this is the view from his camera. there was some sort of shooting involving perhaps more than one car and know this is going to impact the morning commute if this freeway shutdown lasts
4:31 am
longer than the next half hour to an hour. we'll talk with mike as we get the details sorted out. also new overnight, police are investigating a deadly crash in san jose a few blocks from san pedro square about 10:30 last night near the intersection of east santa clara and tenth street. a car crashed into a building after going on to a sidewalk. one died at the scene. there is no word on what might have led to that crash. and let's check in with mike who is tracking both of these. >> good morning. folks you saw that scene, the investigation continues, suv was alongside the sound wall. this is not up in this map right here. we'll take you to the peninsula, 280, the crash occurred -- i'm sorry the investigation started just before 2:00 in the morning and so far we have two lanes open. 280 is open in the southbound
4:32 am
direction. you see the sensors flowing as you past by eastmore, a key exit. if you know where eastmore is as you leave daly city, that is where you'll find the activity. again, your four right lanes are closed, two left lanes are open right now. we're going to follow that status. bob redell is gathering detail. 101 completely clear of activity and light traffic right now. we'll watch as the commute builds. the rest of the bay looks smooth but in san jose that's where the second incident kris was talking about is. tenth and santa clara, where it goes from north to south tenth and in the southbound direction, the only direction that tenth travels closed for the investigation. 11th is one way the opposite direction but the rest of the surface streets should provide you an avenue around this. as we get closer to the time when san jose state comes online near the campus we'll follow this investigation as well. back to you. >> thank you, mike. to our east now in the sierra the flames rage on, but
4:33 am
firefighters are finally gaining some ground. containment on the caldor fire continues to inch up at this hour, it's 27% which is an improvement from 25% yesterday. that's about the only good news. some evacuation orders in el dorado county are lifted. the vast majority of people are out of their homes this morning, however they are cautiously optimistic their properties are safe. jean cole is near the fire lines. >> reporter: the dry brush continues to be a concern puts the winds have died down. firefighters have been making progress setting back burns like this one as evacuees watch and wait. as the caldor fire rages on in some parts of the sierra igniting trees and brush, 4400 fire personnel from nine states are on the offensive, setting back fires like this one toward the main fire to keep it from spreading towards south lake tahoe.
4:34 am
the gusts of wind fueling the caldor fire earlier this week have slowed and aren't spreading as quickly. >> we have crews, again, we're extremely aggressive and got around all the spots through and head of this thing. >> reporter: the fire in the 18th day has swept down valleys, swaths of cabins, missing others, 650 homes destroyed, another 30,000 threatened. about 30 miles away in carson city, nevada, hundreds of evacuees camp out who never thought fire would threaten the tahoe basin. >> the map is changing at less of a rate than they were leading up to sunday and monday, we were super hopeful then too. i'm keeping my fingers crossed. >> reporter: brett sullivan equackvated tuesday, but keeping his humor after losing his job a month ago, he's not sure about his house. >> it's the funniest thing i could come up with, keep it light hearted and not be a bummer but ask for money.
4:35 am
straight out of tahoe. >> reporter: western learning the tahoe collision for the homeless helped evacuate more than 100 in the street or didn't have cars. they keep going back in with a special permit to find others. >> today we did primarily doing outreach to folks who were welfare checks, holdouts not wanting to leave, but providing meds and making sure they have food and connections to care. >> reporter: firefighters say it's just not safe yet for people to return home. evacuees waiting under an ominous sky looking for hope on the horizon. a holiday weekend you expect to see a lot of people in the south lake tahoe area, but as you can see there is still a lot of fire activity. it's not safe for people to be on these roads. it's not safe yet for those evacuees to return home. at the caldor fire, ian cull, nbc bay area news. >> it's unsafe for a long time after that after the trees burn down, the lines are down. kari, at least there has been
4:36 am
that opportunity for containment. >> yeah. we saw the winds calm down and those fire crews are doing incredible work. definitely commending them this morning as we are seeing more containment and there's also still a lot more smoke coming in. that's the reminder we are still in the middle of our wildfire season and we have to deal with unhealthy air quality. we're waking up to moderate air quality this morning and going to see more smoke as we go into today. a smoke advisory in effect for the air quality that will continue into the weekend. moderate air quality, that means that people who are sensitive to the wildfire smoke definitely need to limit time outside. we're going to see that not only today, all across the the bay area, but as the weekend continues and our temperatures heat up. take a look at our highs for today. headed toward 80 in napa but we'll see a few spots hitting 90 degrees like antioch, our temperatures are going to be warming up so we'll talk more about that and the forecast
4:37 am
coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. moving on to decision 2021, ballot security and accuracy a big focus ahead of the recall election september 14th. security experts are asking california's secretary of state to conduct an audit after the september is 14th election. it follows last month's public release of the company's dominion's ballot counting system which runs elections across the country. that happened during an event organized by my pillow ceo mike lindell who, as you know, is an ally of donald trump who has been sued by dominion over claims of false data collection. the group raising these concerns says it has no evidence of foul play. the secretary of state's office says the 40 counties in california that use dominion use a different version of the system than the one leaked last month. security experts say that the leaked software is very similar. what you're seeing here on your screen is something that could
4:38 am
help you if you have questions about the recall ballot. scott mcgrew put together an explaineren on how to complete your ballot. find it at nbcbayarea.com/recall or click on newsom recall in the trending bar at the top of our home page. developing right now, buying your peanuts and cracker jax at oracle during this weekend's giant's game may be tricky if claims from vendors are accurate. they're threatening to vote to strike tomorrow, follows what the union says is at least 20 workers having been infected since the park fully reopened in june. the union seeking an extra $3 an hour for hazard pay. the food management group has insisted ever since the full reopening workers at oracle are safe. ahead of the holiday weekend napa county leaders are banning barbecue and camp fires at lake berryessa because of the extreme fire risk. people are already being told to avoid the tahoe basin this
4:39 am
weekend, but boaters are also being warned to stay off the lake. coast guard crews will be focused on the caldor fire and will not be able to promptly respond to any calls. here we go with that, a holiday weekend. a lot of people going to be out and about this weekend. meteorologist kari hall, of course, tracking what we can expect from the forecast. kari, how are we starting out today? >> it's starting out nice and quiet. cool temperatures, but a little bit of smoke. you may even be able to smell it as you're heading out the door in parts of the east bay, we're waking up to temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 50s and a few clouds. it's going to clear out, but still look hazy today. our temperatures are going to be warming up a little bit more quickly than we've seen in the past few days as we head towards the upper 80s in concord and in santa rosa expect a high of 82 degrees, san francisco reaching 67, and in san jose we're looking at a high of 80 degrees. not too bad in most spots but this weekend for the inland valleys it's going to be hotter.
4:40 am
we're going to be tracking that and i'll have another update in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute. >> the freeway volume is light but in the south bay the first of our alerts for the traffic front in downtown san jose, that investigation, deadly crash going on has the intersection of santa clara at tenth closed. you see the freeways for silicon valley as expected very light traffic. now, getting close to the san jose state, tenth is one of the popular exits off of 280, heading up towards santa clara everything is fine. at santa clara, there's that closure. you see the red right here. tenth is one way heading south down towards 280. that direction is closed, that roadway is closed right now at santa clara. santa clara has lots of options to the north or south and santa clara is two ways, tenth is the opposite direction and 11th, that will not take you where you need to go. any of the other roadways allowed by the local san jose pd investigation will be all right. as we move throughout the maps we look like a frozen system here. we'll just talk about the closure for two right lanes as
4:41 am
you're heading southbound on 280 around east mohr. the other alert. the ongoing investigation for the shooting we talked about. bob redell is on scene. no slowing on the sensors though you have to watch for the investigation. stay to your left. back to you. >> frozen or not, mike moving us forward. coming up on "today in the bay," another airplane changing its vaccination policy. why it's stopping short of calling it a mandate and the perks workers will receive for getting the shot. plus, tipping on twitter. a feature introduced and why you will be able to use it and with more than just u.s. currency. taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. it's friday. trying to get you moving through the rest of this day and into the with weekend. holiday weekend it is. much more ahead for you this mork on "today in the bay." it's 4:41. we'll be right back.
4:42 am
majestic mountains... scenic coastal highways... fertile farmlands... there's lots to love about california. so put off those chores and use less energy from 4 to 9 pm when less clean energy is available. because that's power down time.
4:43 am
4:44 am
right now at 4:44 as you're heading out in the south bay, let's check out san jose. it's 61 degrees, a little bit mooirld than what we normally feel this early in the morning. clouds mixing in with the smoke. moderate air quality as our temperatures get a slight boost today. we'll get a look at all of our microclimate forecasts in the forecast. >> golden gate bridge heading out to the north bay only one lane, there the sign says one lane available. these folks should be picking up the cones and getting done with their friday christina. let's check in.
4:45 am
>> yes, i am. good morning. i'm christina from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher ahead of the big economic news of the day, the monthly jobs report. the dow snapping a three-day losing streak yesterday and the nasdaq and s&p 500 closed at record highs on the back of better than expected data on the number of people filing for unemployment which fell to the lowest level since the pandemic began. after adding nearly 2 million jobs in the past month hiring pulled back in august as a surge in covid cases cut into demand for things like dining and entertainment. company and government payrolls are forecast to have risen by 720,000 last month versus 943,000 in july. however, the range, though, keep it, you know, varies quite a bit with the economists right now. it's all over the place actually. so the unemployment rate now is expected, expected to drop to 5.2%. switching gears, alaska airlines will require an vaccinated employees to be testd regularly
4:46 am
for covid but the company is stopping short of a mandate and will no longer cover their pay for exposure or infection and they will have to attend vaccine education programs. alaska also says air workers who share proof of vaccination by october 15th will get a $200 bonus. so far about 75% of the employees are vaccinated. twitter will let you tip others using bitcoin. nine to five mac reports a screen shot shared by a developer and you will be notified about being able to receive bitcoin tips. their a'loying bitcoin actions for the tip jar feature but unclear when it will be available. the tip jar only acceptses regular money through services such as paypal, ven mo, and square's cash app, but right now the news is an added bonus for bitcoin which is well past $50,000 this morning. >> wow.
4:47 am
marcus and kris. >> too bad it's not active. i would tip you, and you marcus. >> thank you. i'll accept that going forward. >> okay. >> thank you. coming up on "today in the bay," the smoke is back and we're seeing smog as well. meteorologist kari hall tracking it all. >> this is going to really pb be part of your weekend plans as you make your holiday weekend plans to get outside. we're going to talk more about that and hotter temperatures in a few minutes. live look from the east bay, oakland 880, well populated but also at speed, good news for this side of the bay. on the peninsula an update, the freeway a better job for folks driving down the peninsula. we still haves the urgent situation. >> the future of reproductive rights in texas in the balance after texas was allowed to keep its ban on very early abortions. another state is looking to do
4:48 am
the same. but there's a dating app now supporting a woman's right to choose and we'll show you how.
4:49 am
4:50 am
it is 10 minutes to 5:00 this morning. look at this beautiful picture of san francisco. we can see the transamerica pyramid there because the fog is not super close to that part of our area where we haves the area. we're going to check in with kari to see how the fog could
4:51 am
affect our air quality. >> yes. bringing in some of the smoke and so that's what we're going to experience going into the weekend. the fog nears the coast we've also been tracking the fire conditions. all of these fire weather sensors showing where we've seen fire already burning in yellow and not as much red as we saw the past couple days, meaning that those crews are getting a better handle on the fires and the forward movement. i wanted to bring in you closely because that's heavenly over there. you can see all the lines and looks like a mountain there. then we have some red boxes here indicating some active fires that are moving very close to heavenly. we'll have to keep an eye on that hopefully they get that under control before it moves a little bit too close. then looking at our temperature trend it's going to start to heat up, not only here but all across the region as high pressure moves in. our afternoon temperatures headed closer to 90 degrees in
4:52 am
some of our warmer spots. we'll start out saturday morning nice and comfortable but look at how much hotter it's going to be during the afternoon. that's that head's up if you yard work or outdoor activities or going to a festival the earlier the better because we are going to see temperatures really uncomfortable into the afternoon. sunday morning it's going to be cooler but not as cool as we normally start our morning. high pressure moving in, going to cause hotter temperatures and by next week, we'll start to see a storm system is approaching the pacific northwest and that's going to increase our westerly wind as well as hopefully clear out some of this smoke that we're going to see. hazy air quality unhealthy for some people sensitive to the smoke so it will have a hazy look to the sky. some of the worst of the air quality will be in the north bay and, of course, once again we're watching that because we do have a big bottlerock festival happening this weekend and we're going to have people out there
4:53 am
in the heat as well as some of the hazy skies and smoke. looking at our temperatures we're in the upper 80s and low 90s into the next few days. our labor day cranks up for the inland areas. heading over to you, mike, you've been watching the roads. what's going on? >> a better situation as far as the freeway information goes. southbound 280 seconds after we gave that first report about lanes closed we have all lanes, all lanes are open. bob redell updated us. that's a shooting investigation that continues over there just around eastmore off 280, daly city where bob will give us what he's learned over the last few minutes on the scene. the rest of the freeways move smoothly. disabled vehicle in livermore. not presenting a problem for 580. no real slowing out of the altamont. a light friday as we talk about. tenth at santa clara if downtown san jose, continued be closure because of a deadly crash that's happened and san jose pd investigation. avoid that intersection. back to you. >> thank you, mike. a follow-up now, abortion
4:54 am
rights groups are asking if this week's high court decision to sidestep an abortion ban in texas is a sign of thing to come when mississippi is the next to argue its case before the security during the session. >> the fact that they did not see a need to block a law that directly conflicts with the court's constitutional rulings shows quite clearly there are justices on the court that are willing to curtail and potentially even eliminate abortion rights. >> while allowing the new law to stand, the supreme court did leave the door open for future challenges to its constitutionality. more details, some of the country's largest dating apps are taking a stand against texas abortion law. austin based bumble announcing it is creating a relief fund to support people seeking abortions in the state. the ceo of match announcing in an memo she will personally
4:55 am
create a fund to support texas-base of state. coming up on the "today in the bay," the cal exodus continues. some trying to make it in the bay don't seem to manage to do it. where californians are ending up. >> palo alto is the latest city in the bay area to institute a vaccine mandate for its city employees. those workers must get the shot or be tested for covid twice per week. that move comes on the heels of san francisco and santa clara county issuing similar recent mandates for its employees. according to palo alto onlines the decision comes following negotiations with several labor unions. it tells the paper it expects to have the new policy in place by september 30th at the latest. we'll be right back. 4:55.
