breaking at 5:00, a freeway shooting, gunfire on 280 outside of san francisco leaving people hurt and a highway shut down for hours. we have bob redell live at the scene. this is "today in the bay." thanks so much for starting your friday morning with us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura. >> i'm marcus washington. first, we want to get to that freeway shooting. let's go to bob redell right now live there at the scene with the breaking news. this is in daly city. bob, what can you tell us, what information have you been able to get this morning? >> yeah, good morning to you, marcus and kris. chp tells us several people were transferred to hospital with possible bullet wounds. their condition unknown. this happened behind me here on southbound 280 in daly city.

this happened on the freeway just after the eastmore exit. the call came in after 1:30s this morning about an older model gold colored gmc suv. you can see it in the video. that crashed into the side wall off the freeway. you can see the back window and one of the side windows were blown out either by the gunfire or from the collision. not clear. everyone in the suv as i mentioned was injured and taken to the hospital. chp officers with flashlights seen searching the freeway possibly for bullet casings. we believe the shooter was the a separate vehicle and got away. no vehicle description. chp is investigating. the freeway was shut down for some time but has since reopened. for more on the traffic to our traffic anchor mike. >> you gave the important information for the drive. thanks for setting the screen. southbound 280 all lanes open just after 4:30. they reopened all lanes heading southbound. there will be some activity. perhaps you know our crews out

there and bob is out there. bright lights. 280 is open heading south out of daly city past highway 1. 101, slowing, crews there through santa clara -- san mateo county as you know about. there is a crash coming westbound 580 around greenle is. there may be one lane blocked. we'll track that important route out of the central valley. no slowing that shows up there. the freeways for the south bay are looking smooth. remember tenth at santa clara they're continuing with an investigation, a deadly crash there. san jose pd will give us updates and i'll pass them along. a hopeful turn on the frontlines of the caldor fire where crews are gaining more ntnment. right now that fire is listed at 27% and some evacuation orders in el dorado county have been lifted. the milder conditions providesed a boost for the firefighters but the fire has destroyed about 650 homes and burned 211,000 acres.

let's turn to meteorologist kari hall tracking all of the changing conditions this week. we've had wind a little bit more humidity and progress and setback. what's happening today? >> yeah. the winds are calming down, but temperatures will be going up over the next few days so that may be taxing for the crews dealing with the fires and also trying to deal with the heat. now we take a look at our air quality, some more of that smoke starts to come back into the bay area. we're starting out our morning with moderate air quality and it does seem like at times today we'll see some drifts of smoke. if you're sensitive to the smoke and can smell it in the air limit your time out there if you're driving, turn your air on recirculate and inside turn on the air conditioner and close the windows. we are going to see this possibly affecting a lot of our weekend plans over the next few days as our temperatures crank up. more smoke will be pouring in. i'll have an update on that. we'll talk more about where those temperatures will be heating up in the forecast

coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right. we can't stop talking about it, the caldor fire and the dixie fire among several firefighters to the brink of exhaustion right now. it's hard for them. alameda county fire department has 30 members assisting in the sierra nevada. the department says it is maintaining full staffing levels. crews usually work two days on and four days off, but when the big fire happens they can work 7 to 14 days straight. >> they're in hot conditions working the fires 24/7 and working very hard and eating and sleeping on the line. >> cal fire requires its employees to work 21 days straight with two days off. the agency says it is what they train for. >> it's hard to see them sleeping just on the ground sometimes. breaking overnight, the prime minister of new zealand calling a stabbing rampage at a supermarket the work of an isis

inspired terrorist. this happened in auckland. six people were injured, three are in critical condition. authorities shot and killed the attacker within a minute. they say he was a sri lankan national who had been on their radar since at least 2016 and had been in new zealand for ten years. and developing now, president biden heads to the gulf coast to survey the damage from hurricane ida. this is what he's going to see. the storm carried a mix of record rain, flooding and tornadoes stretching all the way up to new york and in the northeast there are now 42 confirmed deaths tied to that storm. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington with an update on the aftermath and what we can expect from president biden's trip. good morning, tracie. >> good morning, everyone. the president gets a firsthand view today of the damage that happened when a category 4 hurricane hit louisiana and he's also going to be taking a look at what the people down there need to recover.

in louisiana today president biden will tour neighborhoods devastated by hurricane ida and meet with local leaders and victims. >> my message to everyone affected is we're all in this together. the nation is here to help. >> fema, the federal emergency management agency has sent 1100 people to affected states providing water, generators and other help. federal agencies are helping with search and rescue, structural evaluations and restoring power in the brutal heat. >> just don't want to cry anymore. i'm tired. yeah. and burning up at night, you know. you wake up and feel like you're in hell. >> reporter: there are long lines as residents search for food, water and gas. >> it turned into a nightmare. i mean no gas is anywhere. >> reporter: the category 4 storm killed nearly 4 dozen people as it made its way north. tornadoes and rain ravaged the northeast causing record

flooding like new york has never seen. >> this is the biggest wake-up call we could possibly get. >> reporter: president biden's tour today to see the damage, send help and figure out how to mitigate the impact for the next storm. the president says the storm damage, the flooding, even the wildfires out west are all further evidence of climate change. >> so powerful to see the president on the ground with people always makes some of them feel better. thank you. everything now set in the criminal fraud trial for theranos founder elizabeth holmes. opening statements are scheduled for next wednesday. jurors were seated yesterday. that process moving relatively quickly despite all the local attention on the case and the recent release of documents, about a failed boost in testing -- the blood testing company. the jury is made up of seven men, five women and alternates.

it's believed 37-year-old holmes will take the witness stand. to the pandemic now, hospitals across the country are seeing an uptick in pediatric covid infections and hospitalizations. the cdc says more children have kruds because it is spreading more quickly and more young people are now back at school in person. still, data shows the overall number of children in the hospital with covid remains low. the american academy of pediatrics finds children account for about 2% of covid related hospitalizations. in august more than a half million children tested positive. new infections in san jose. san jose unified tells us that san jose spotlight, it's seen about 5 new cases a day this week. since reopening august 18th, 21 cases across 15 of schools, the same number of infections in the alum rock district, the east

side school district reporting that twice that with 47 cases. schools there reopened august 10th. we are tracking all the covid cases in the bay area school district. head over right now to nbcbayarea.com and click on covid-19 dashboard, use a link to our trending bar. an outbreak canceling tonight's football game at san mateo high school all due to covid. we say half moon bay says the players were infected and the varsity football game is canceled as players on the cougars are infected. there is no word on how many team members came down with covid and when they were diagnosed. san mateo high school's leadership made that call to cancel the game saying it would not be safe for visiting students at half moon bay high school. a live look at sfo and lots of people have travel plans for the labor day holiday weekend. we probably made some of those plans before we knew about the surge but with that surge

spreading, the cdc is urging unvaccinated people to stay home. vaccinated travellers are advised to mask up and keep their distance whenever possible. ucsf disease expert peter chin-hong says taking precautions is so important. >> we're going to see a bump in cases after the hospital. the amount of virus in the bay area is high. >> it is higher in other parts of the country. if you are traveling to some places like montana or florida or hawaii, where hospitals are stretched thin, you might even risk not being able to get medical care should you get sick. finally, the series giants fans have been waiting for. the dodgers come to town for three games with the teams tied at the top of the division. >> the giants hopefully starting another role. against milwaukee they busted open a 1-1 tie in the eighth and

walnut creek heading toward 87 degrees. some spots will be hitting the 90s this weekend. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes as well as the air quality. mike, how is it looking driving heading out to work this morning? >> overall, it's friday and prelabor day friday which means it should be extra light. the last few days we've seen some larger crashes. when they do occur because folks are able to drive at higher speeds. the freeways after 280 clears are all clear. there's still closure in the south bay. silicon valley and san jose downtown san jose main drag through downtown is santa clara and that is closed at tenth right around the -- right there where the red there is. tenth at santa clara. closed between ninth and 11th for a deadly crash. the san jose police continues the investigation and avoid the intersection. tenth street goes one way this way, 11th street the opposite direction. don't use 11th or think about 11th as your alternate. follow where the barricades will allow you to go.

daly city. the southbound side that is. the investigation continues from the shooting. that's where bob redell continues to report. >> good morning. happy very first friday of the month to you. that is the first friday we get key job numbers coming up at 5:30. we'll see how many new jobs were added to the american economy in august and a reading on the unemployment rate which we think should fall again. it's been tracking lower. here's an expert. i challenge him for a prediction. >> we're very optimistic about a fairly substantial jobs report coming friday morning. we're really projecting at morgan stanley 725,000 new jobs just to put that in perspective, prior to covid, we were averaging about 200,000 new jobs a month, a really good run rate, about 140 straight months of job growth. that was great. and then covid came. >> president biden will speak about the jobs report coming up. he doesn't know what the report

says. the president gets the number, the same time we do, and traditionally they wait for wall street to digest it for a bit before speaking out about it. do keep in mind, though, jobs numbers look backwards. they started collectings the august jobs numbers in early august so the hurricane is not going to be a factor. growing fears of covid will be accountd for. you might have seen florida had its deadl day ever yesterday. that doesn't seem to be affecting jobs, covid doesn't, the way it used to. seems like the one thing we can do during a pandemic is work. covid still having a massive effect on the supply chain. ford says sales cratered last month because there weren't enough cars and strux trucks to sell. gm will idle more plants. chip companies are building new facilities. a ribbon cutting at asl in san jose. intel is building new fabs in arizona but there's no way they

can catch up with what's need right now. they're talking about a chip shortage for maybe the next two years. >> i was telling my husband maybe buy lower tech cars. they don't exist. everything has chips everywhere. >> everything is off the lot because that's what a lot of people are doing are buying used cars. new this morning, walmart is giving everyone a raise ahead of the holidays. the nation's largest retailer hiking hourly wages by at least a dollar for more than 565,000 store is workers. the ceo says the average hourl wage is now $16.40. the retailer also plans to hire 20,000 more workers ahead of the holiday shopping season. and trending this morning, after 40 years, abba is back. >> let's take a listen. oh, yeah, to their new song. here we go. ♪♪ >> old-school feeling.

from our heavenly ski resort camera. you can see all of those active flames that are still continuing to progress as we watch the caldor fire this morning. hopefully more containment this weekend as the winds have calmed down. now smoke from much of the dixie fire, the monument fire farther to the north is moving in, so we're looking at some moderate air quality for the next few days. of course many people are making labor day weekend plans. you will need to plan on the smoke and the heat impacting your time outside. take a look at our temperatures and where we're headed for today. not bad. upper 70s, low 80s, a few spots hitting 90 degrees from the tri-valley to the inland east bay and then cools down tonight. the early morning hours will be when we get the best air quality as well as the more comfortable temperatures. because we're going to really start to heat up tomorrow as some parts of the east bay reach into the upper 90s and then once again we're going to have a cool start to sunday morning before

it heats up once again. hot holiday weekend for the valleys and then going into next week we'll be watching a storm system passing just to our north that's going to help hopefully refresh the air and also bring some rain very close to california. but the smoke, hazy, as well as moderate to unhealthy at times. some of the most unhealthy air quality will be in parts of the north bay and then as we go into the weekend for early next week as well, still looks pretty smoky here. temperatures mid to upper 90s in the inland areas and slowly cools down next week with some upper 80s expected by next thursday. we're watching all of that. mike, you've been keeping an eye on the roads. what's the update now? >> it's friday so overall, light traffic volume and that's what we do expect a reminder because the roadways are clearer and you can go a little faster. be careful, sometimes that results in larger crashes. we saw that at times this week. over here the altamont pass not showing any slowing. westbound is your commute

5:25. an embattled santa clara sheriff laurie smith is facing a political challenger. retired sheriff's capital kevin jensen is seeking to unseat her next year. he tried to do back in 2014 after supervisors this week issued a largely symbolic no confidence vote. the vote follows san jose mayor sam liccardo's call for smith to resign be citing pay for play scandal and patterns of abuse at county jails. concern running high at antioch high school after an arrest that was caught on video. the board held a special meeting last night in the wake of this tiktok video that went viral. the principal says one student attacked a classmate and threatened to harm his entire class but police say school security needed help detaining that 16-year-old. after that, the video is raising

breaking right now at 5:30, a freeway shooting shutting down a major freeway overnight outside san francisco and we're going to take you there live for what you need to know. this is "today in the bay." >> it is fly morning and a good morning to you. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. we want to take you right to that breaking news that's happening in daly city. "today in the bay's" bob redell is there live. >> good morning to you, kris and marcus. southbound 280 is reopened here in daly city. it's been reopened for about the past 30 to 45 minutes after a

freeway shooting that took place overnight. you can take a look at this video that came in to our newsroom. several people were taken to the hospital according to chp with possible bullet wounds. their condition is unknown. again, this happened on southbound 280 just after the eastmoor exit in daly city. the call came in a little bit after 1:30 this morning about an older modelled gold colord gms suv that crashed into the side wahl. the back window and one of the side windows were blown out either by gunfire or the impact to the collision into the wall. everyone in the suv was injured and taken to the hospital. chp officers had their flashlights out searching the freeway possibly for bullet casings. we believe the shooter was in a separate vehicle that did get away. there's no vehicle description. chp still investigating again. the freeway was shut down for some time but has reopened. reporting live here in daly city, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> good thing it is back open.

thank you. new overnight, police are investigating the deadly crash in san jose a few blocks from san pedro square. this happened about 10:30 near the intersection of east santa clara and tenth street. we have learned that the intersection has reopened. the one car crashed into a building. another suffered life-threatening injuries. no word on what might have led to the crash. a fire raging this morning, but firefighters are gaining ground against the caldor fire. the containment is now up to 27%. that's higher than 25% yesterday. some evacuation orders in el dorado county are now lifted. conditions yesterday were relatively mild for firefighters there. the vast majority of people are still out of their homes this morning still. the fire has destroyed 1100 acres. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the conditions for us all week long.

how are things looking now? >> we are seeing still some favorable weather conditions for more containment today. calmer winds as well as comfortable temperatures and higher humidity, but we're starting to see some of the smoke drifting into the bay area from those fires that are burning all across the state. if you are sensitive to the smoke, if you can smell it in the air, turns the air conditioner in the car on recirculate or head inside and close the windows. we are going to see this air quality that's going to affect people who are sensitive to the smoke and may have breathing problems as we go into the weekend. our temperatures will also be heating up. a little bit warmer today but it does get much hotter for tomorrow into sunday. so i'll have more on that in the forecast that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you. our coverage doesn't end here. gets the latest on the caldor fire by visiting us online at nbcbayarea.com. ballot security and accuracy a big focus ahead of the recall election.

security experts are asking california's secretary of state to conduct an audit after the september is 14th election. it follows last month's public release of the company's dominion's ballot counting system which runs elections across the country. this happened during an event organized by my pillow ceo mike lindell, who is an ally of donald trump, who is now being sued by dominion over claims of false data collection. the group raising these concerns says it has no evidence of foul play. the secretary of state's office says the 40 counties in california that use dominion use a different version of the system than the one leaked last month. security experts say that the leaked software is very similar. turning to the pandemic and a new study that further supports the idea that vaccines reduce the risk of severe disease and hospitalization even in breakthrough covid infections. the data conducted in the u.s. and the uk also says the shots can lower the odds of having long-term covid systems, the

long covid people talk about. the odds of having lingering infections past 28 days were cut in half. new concerns about the effectiveness of the covid vaccine over time. researchers at uc san diego measured the response for health workers in the wake of the delta variant surge and after the end of the statewide mask mandate. they found from march through june, vaccine effectiveness was at about 90%. but then in july, it dropped to about 65%. they note that vaccines provided better protection from severe outcomes including hospitalizations and deaths. their letters just published had in the "new england journal of medicine." >> developing right now, buying your peanuts and cracker jacks during the giants game may be tricky if the claims from vendors are accurate. the union representing concession workers is now threatening to strike tomorrow. they're talking about doing a vote for that. this follows what the union says

is at least 20 workers having been infected since the park fully reopened. the union seeking $3 an hour for hazard pay and the giants not commenting. the food management group has insisted since they fully reopened the workers at oracle park are safe. ahead of the holiday weekend napa county leaders are banning barbecue and camp fires at lake berryessa because of the fire risk. people are already being told to avoid the tahoe basin this weekend, but boaters are also being warned to stay off the lake. coast guard crews will be focused on the caldor fire and won't be able to respond promptly to all calls. >> we know a lot of people are going to try to go to the lake and thing like that. holiday weekend. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect from those conditions. i know a lot of people are going to the game this weekend starting tonight, the giants game, let's go, playing the dodgers, but the thing about it, you want to make sure you're

prepared, because air quality could be different in many places. >> yeah. we're going to see some of that smoke drifting in and that's, of course, going to be one of the things we'll have to watch with people outside and spending long periods of time out there. as we check out the giants game this evening we are starting out with cool temperatures here, even though it's going to be cooler we are going to see the low clouds and the fog and some breezy winds. it's going to cool off quickly going into tonight. make sure you're dressed accordingly. of course for bottlerock this weekend people are going to be out there pretty much all day long. temperatures today headed toward the low to mid 80s, moderate air quality and as temperatures get up, i do think that we're going to have some more unhealthy air quality for parts of the north bay as it looks hazy out there, you smell the smoke, and it's going to be hot. just might want to make sure you're wearing an n-95 mask that may be your best protection there. heading to santa cruz the beach is being to be a popular

destination. labor day is like the last celebration before we really settle in to fall. it's going to be so nice here, temperatures in the low 70s today, mid 70s a little bit warmer by sunday as well as monday. so big sur also going to be a good place to hang out with mid to upper 70s here for the weekend into the end of the weekend. now where you will see some of the hotter temperatures paso roebls this weekend. sunday 101. i will stay closer to home. it's going to be hot and hazy there and they're going to be getting some of the smoke coming in. no place to drive to escape it. we're going to see this across california for the weekend. head's up on that. mike, what's the head's up that you have for the morning commute. >> first of all, i'm in concurrence i will stay away from the temperature 101 but the freeway 101 is fine throughout silicon valley. the early drive no problems. that one incident as we told you

just a couple minutes ago, san jose pd did tweet out they have reopened the intersection of santa clara between 9th and 11th. this is san jose state just a few blocks away was the crash scene. santa clara reopened. so is tenth down toward 280 and passing by san jose state. we're tracking that as one of the stories overnight. deadly crash on 280 at eastmoor. notes the deadly crash, a shooting on 280 at east. bob redell connues to follow that story. a smooth drive after that freeway was reopened in the southbound direction. never a problem for the northbound. westbound 580 a little bit of slowing. activity still there, but i think it has been cleared from the fast lane there and vasco road shows a little bit of slowing past the county line. this is typical even on a friday we'll get a little slowing at the bend. everything else moves smoothly toward the maze and bay bridge. back to you. >> thanks, mike. with the high cost of living here in california, we all know it's hard to make it in the bay and there is new data out this

morning. that data shows where people are moving once they leave the state. according to the new numbers in "the new york times" about 82,000 people have lefts the golden state for texas. this is within the past year. the cost of living half compared to california. arizona, nevada, washington, and oregon also saw more than 35,000 residents courtesy of us here in california. >> they're getting good people, i guess. coming up for you, the future of outdoor events as covid continues to spread.
