5:00 am
we are tracking the unhealthy air quality in your neighborhood. plus labor day covid concerns as cases continue to surge, experts weigh in on what you need to do to stay safe moving forward. this is "today in the bay." and a good morning on this labor day. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez, laura has the week off. developing this morning, good news on the frontlines of the caldor fire burning near lake tahoe, but in the bay area, smoke from the wildfires across the region continue to be unhealthy for some neighborhoods. >> air district leaders are extending the bay area spare the air alert at least through today. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the east bay. talk to us about this extension, why? >> good morning to you, marcus and kris. a few reasons why it is going to be hotter today, especially in the inland valleys where i'm at
5:01 am
in dublin, east bay, other parts of solano county. you've also got more people returning to work, they're pre-covid routines and with cars on the road and the pollution and you have the wildfires burning up north. we're going to see some of the smoke from there coming into our area. so the bay area air quality management district does want you to limit your time in your cars today and for your own health if you're going to be outdoor, especially if you're going to be exercising, they would like you to do that in the early morning hours before the ozone levels starts to increase. with regards to the caldor fire burning near lake tahoe that you mentioned, that has burned just over 215,000 acres, but is now 44% contained. cal fire says the winds have let up and reduced the fire spread and made it easier for them to up their containment. authorities started letting people back in south lake tahoe. 22,000 people from the south shore were forced to evacuate last week, find shelter elsewhere not knowing if there
5:02 am
would be a home for them to return to. >> i'm feeling happiness and joy that my house didn't burn down and we can all two back. >> reporter: now even though cal fire is allowing residents back into south lake tahoe there is still an evacuation warning in effect for that area. it's just no longer mandatory like it was last week. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right. i know a lot of people wishing things continue to get better out there. >> for sure. south lake tahoe's mayor among many extremely grateful for evacuation orders finally being lifted. mayor wallace says that caldor fire has her worst fear come to life. >> my worst nightmare in the 25 years i've lived in south lake tahoe was knowing that our -- most of our winds are southwesterly is to have a fire come into the basin or start in the basin in the southwest
5:03 am
corner of the lake tahoe basin and that's exactly where it came in. so having a fire come over echo summit and having high winds, which we had, it was entirely possible in my mind for our entire community and the entire lake tahoe basen to go up in flames. >> the mayor says that although many in her community have returned home, she has not. she actually says that service in her neighborhood is still limited. so emotional blow this weekend for firefighters on the frontlines of the dixie fire burning near chico. a veteran national forest firefighter died from illness. we know his death is not connected from the fire, though, it is not clear if he became sick battling the flames. containment levels inched up again yesterday, now at 56%. the fire already has destroyed
5:04 am
700 homes and 6,000 homes are still under threat. >> even though the fire is some distance away we can feel the affects here. want to go to vianey arana has been tracking those conditions there and the air conditions here in the bay area. how are things looking so far, vianey? >> we get that drifting smoke, of course, but pair that with the high pressure and you get a combination of really just gunk in the air, a ton of pollutants which is why the spare the air alert is in effect. we're talking 90s, triple digits, but let's go over some of that air quality. so first let's head over to the tahoe basin and see how it's doing up there. of course, this is what we're seeing some of the worst air quality. just a reminder, a spare the air alert is issued when the aqi, air quality index, hits above 101. according to the bay area air quality management district that's what we're seeing in some spots. take a look at the tahoe basin, unhealthy air continues. it's going to take a while but the winds have significantly calmed down which has certainly helped in the fight against that fire there.
5:05 am
now as far as here locally we're going to continue to see some of the smoke push into our region, moving south into the bay area. especially for those folks who live in the north bay and in through some of the interior valleys, you're probably going to get more of the hazy conditions, but even around the coastline, pair that up with some of the cloud cover and we'll get a little bit of glow through the afternoon. we'll have a closer look at the extended week and what to expect coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. you can track the air quality in your neighborhood. i know our youth coaches do this too. head to nbcbayarea.com and click on check air quality in your neighborhood. it's in the trending bar right at the top. if you type in your zip code you get the specific map for you. new overnight, taliban fighters are now claiming to control the last holdout in afghanistan. a province north of kabul. this is still being held by anti-taliban forces until this morning. now the only territory that did not fall during last month's

5:08 am
>> the virus uses all of our holidays to allow it to spread. labor day is not going to be any exception. we know that people who are vaccinated, unfortunately some of these people can transmit the virus. most don't. but some can. so if you're not vaccinated in that event, that's a major risk. >> when it comes to safe gatherings the advice includes for starters making sure you and your guests are vaccinated. if you are unvaccinated the advice is to stay home on a busy weekend like this. also, keep the gatherings outdoors and mask up if you're not sure that everyone has had their shots or if the crowd is larger than what you feel comfortable with. sonoma county strengthening its vaccination requirements for employees. starting tomorrow the county workers must provide proof of vaccination or undergo regular testing. a similar mandate for first responders has been delayed until september 24th. meantime the city of berkeley will join san francisco this week requiring proof of

5:10 am
is expected to linger in the air today but early in the morning you can't see it out there, but when that sun starts to arrive, vianey, then you start seeing it throughout. >> that's the thing, especially with the cloud cover, i think people are like are those clouds or some haze. it's going to be a mix of both, even around the coastline. i want to show you somewhere some of the worst spots might be. this is according to the bay area air quality management district. if you live in the north bay right now they're predicting 63 on the aqi scale which is moderate. however look at the east bay and santa clara valley. above the 101 mark so that's unhealthy, especially for sensitive groups. again, this could change with the direction of the wind creating pockets of unhealthy air, even for those areas that show moderate for this afternoon. so keep that in mind. also daytime highs for today let's take you on a tour. triple digits for the valley, extremely unhealthy air quality. down to the south bay we'll be

5:16 for you this morning. time to talk movies and now it really looks like things are back to business. a lot of people say that. marvel's "shang-chi" blasted labor day records with a $71 million debut. >> that's a lot of money. >> i told my men they wouldn't be able to kill you if they tried. glad i was right. >> that's how it landed too. the film ranks as one of the best debuts of the pandemic. "shang-chi" is expected to add another $12 million today alone. of course as people look to do something fun on the holiday. look at the top movies this holiday weekend. maybe you saw them. coming in second is horror film "candy man" raking in $10 million, followed by "free guy" staring ryan reynolds at $8.7

million. we haven't seen a debut like that in a long time. >> not in a long time. i want to see that movie. it looks good. >> yeah. >> the lead, i actually was -- for that show "kim's convenience" if you haven't watched it watch it on netflix. >> will do. >> stay inside, close the windows, get away from the unhealthy air quality. let's talk about it. so today is technically the unofficial end to summer. i know sad, sad, but think of all the positive things. the nice fluffy sweaters, cozy socks, great smelling candles. san jose right now live look, yes there is a spare the air alert in effect through today, so i want to guide you through some of the things that i'm going to be talking about during the forecast even, you know, looking ahead throughout this hour so that way you fully understand weight going on. we've got mod air conditions and unhealthy air conditions. any time the aqi scale goes above the 101 mark they issue a spare the air alert. in addition to the smoke playing a factor in this spare the air
5:19 am
alert, it's also the high pressure playing a role. if you're thinking what does that mean? let me show you an explainer of what we have going on. think of this as a layer in the atmosphere. see it right here. number one, wildfire smoke that's the haze but orange glow you see in the sky. the big "h" is the high pressure that i'm talking about. think of it as this big area that's just trapping all of that smoke right beneath the high pressure. in addition to that, we've been talking about the ozone. number two. that is all of the gunk that your car releases into the air, pair that up with the ground heating from the sun and you get all of this pollution that traps right at our surface level creating that thick layer of haze. so whenever you hear me say high pressure and smoke are playing a role, that's what i mean. those two combined can quickly become an unhealthy situation really for anybody. let's take a look the at the forecasted highs for this afternoon. 80s, 90s, and yes those are triple digits. even though we're unofficially ending summer looks like the heat wants to remain.
5:20 am
triple digits for antioch. 70s for san francisco. and that near surface smoke is going to remain healthy at least for the remainder of today. hopefully getting some good clearing by tomorrow with the boost in the help of some cloud cover into the later portion of this week. so those tropical clouds are on the way. that's going to start to especially pick up into tomorrow. i would say wednesday and thursday as well. and then look at this, shower chance possibility, but not for us here. more like the sierra and over the next seven days keep in mind it's going to be pretty hot even for san francisco. all right. let's get a quick check of how the traffic is doing. not a lot going on here so we've got a lot going on in weather but the green on this map means everyone is moving along. no major accidents, maybe just a couple areas that i've seen of some overnight clearing for construction but look at the south bay crimes drive times. northbound 101 from highway 85 only 19 minutes. 280 from 101 to 85 seven minutes.

over a new wildfire prompting evacuation orders in auburn. the so-called bridge fire started yesterday just a little after noon under the foresthill bridge in placer county's auburn state recreation area. it grew quickly to 250 acres and triggered evacuation orders for about 500 people there. evacuation orders were issued for more people impacted. the fire is still burning out of control and no reports of any homes being destroyed. we'll hope it stays that wayp with. also developing this morning, good news on the frontlines of the caldor fire. still burning near south lake tahoe, but in the bay area smoke from wildfires across the region continue to be unhealthy for some neighborhoods. >> air district leaders are actually extending the bay area spare the air alert at least through today. "today in the bay's" bob redell has been live for us this morning, tracking all of what's going on here in the east bay. talk to us about that extension and the reason for it.
5:33 am
>> reporter: there's a few reasons, marcus and kris. you have the hot weather that's expected today. more people are venturing out post- -- well not post-covid but returning to their precovid routines. more car pollution throughout and the smoke from the wildfires up north, especially the caldor fire, which as you mentioned it's just over 250,000 acres burned and now 44% contained. winds have let up, reduced the fire spread and made it easier to ups the containment. authorities started letting people back in south lake tahoe. 22,000 people from the south shore were forced to evacuate last week, find shelter elsewhere, not knowing if their home would be there when they returned. >> i was happy but at the same time i'm sad because many people lose their house over there and there. the fires.
5:34 am
everything. lost. yeah. it's terrible. it's terrible for many people who lost their house. >> reporter: even though cal fire is allowing residents back in south lake tahoe an evacuation warning is still in effect for that area. it's just no longer mandatory. back to that spare the air alert that's, again, been extended through today. the air quality bay area air quality management district wants you to limit your driving today and for your health if you're going outside and exercising they want you to do that in the early morning hours really for the ozone levels start to creep up. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> affecting a lot of people. thanks for that update. >> let's turn to vianey arana. you are tracking conditions and i have to say that i thought it was really clear and crisp -- not crisp but clear where i was. speaks to how the smoke moves around. >> that's one thing we mention it sort of depends on the
5:35 am
direction of the wind. there could be pockets of pretty good air and then all of a sudden there's a pocket of unhealthy air, which is why the bay area air quality management district does it as a precaution because notice right here, this is their forecast for today. if you see we've got some moderate locations, but then, you know, they went ahead and forecast unhealthy air quality for areas like the east bay, santa clara valley but with the spare the air alert it's purchase unhealthy for everybody. they remind you yes, we're dealing with smoke. you heard bob mention the ozone. what he means, once that sun comes up and it starts heating up the ground i mean we're going to be in the 90s and triple digits, all of those pollutants from the cars you drive, i mean just the sun itself, that creates more pollution in the air. definitely want to get that workout in before the sun comes up for sure. clouds at times. we're going to see an increase in the cloud cover especially into the second half of our week. we've got some moisture coming into play, but not in the form of rain. i wish it was for us. all right. let's get a check of how your

a critical morning on the road to recovery. pandemic related jobless benefits are ending for millions of americans. >> on labor day, ironically. "today in the bay's" thom jensen is digging deeper into who might be feeling the pinches the most this morning. good morning, tom. >> good morning. this affects millions across the country, tens of millions. 3 million here in california. it affects a lot of categories of different types of workers too. i will go down that list here. those affected include about 1 million self-employed in california, part-time contract workers or gig employees losing their benefits. also anyone who does not qualify for state unemployment benefits and some 2 million californians on extended benefits or those who have already completed 26 weeks or more of unemployment. also those who still qualify for regular unemployment will no longer get those add-on, those

hiring people because of that, but this is making people make some tough decisions as the pandemic is extended and the virus is still out there to choose between coming back to work while -- after they lose those benefits. live in the east bay, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thank you. yet another sign that expanded el fresco dining might be here to stay in california. i like it. new bill now awaiting the governor's signature to assist restaurants' recovery. it will grant a one-year grace period for restaurants relying on the expanded outdoor service. that extension would start once the current emergency order is lifted and would allow students apply for permanent outdoor expansion. san francisco state senator scott weiner is one of the bill's co-author. california's september 30th eviction deadline approaching, they are becoming more nervous
