44% contained. caldor fire says the winds have let up, it's reduced the fire spread and they've been able to get more containment around the fire. yesterday authorities started letting people back in the south lake tahoe. you'll recall last week around 22,000 people were evacuated from the south shore. they finally have been able to go back home. stress during the several days because they weren't sure what home they would have to go back to. >> i'm feeling happiness and joy that my house didn't burn down and we can all go back. >> even though cal fire is allowing residents back into south lake tahoe, an evacuation warning is still in effect for that area. so again, it's a warning. it's just not mandatory like it was about a week ago. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right. thank you. an emotional blow for firefighters on the frontlines of the dixie fire burning near chico.

a veteran national forest firefighter died from illness. his death is not directly connected to the fire though not clear if he became sick while battling the flames. containment levels inched up yesterday and now at 56% containment there. the dixie fire has destroyed nearly 700 homes and some 6,000 more homes are still under threat. >> okay. we want to take a live look outdoor across the bay area, the smoke and haze expected to linger. vianey arana has been keeping her eye on air quality so far. how is it looking for us today? >> you know, the thing is that because it's so hot, that's also playing a component, so we had a shift in the winds. they definitely called down which is sort of what helped. the tahoe basin air quality here. a spare the air alert is issued. when the aqi goes above 101. north bay coast, south bay, according to the air quality management district. here are your numbers.

fighters are claiming the control of the last holdout in afghanistan. this is a province north of kabul. it's still being held by anti-taliban forces until this morning. it was the only territory not to fall during last month's takeover. meanwhile, taliban also reportedly blocking several american planes from taking off. the planes were supposed to help evacuate hundreds including americans left behind when the u.s. withdrew last week. one congressman says the taliban is looking for something in return. governor newsom and state leaders are making a nearly $17 million request to help the crisis in afghanistan. that would go towards resettling afghan refugees in california. if approve that move would provide cash assistance and other help for refugees who don't qualify for certain federal benefits due to their visa status. the state legislature is set to consider that request next week.

developing in florida, an infant and its mother are among four people killed after after a random shooting in two neighboring homes east of tampa. this morning investigators say the gunman is a former marine who served as a sharp shooter in afghanistan in both iraq and afghanistan. they believe that he may have been under the influence of drugs at the time. >> when you see somebody so heartless, so calculated, that they will shoot a mother clinging to her 3-month-old baby and kill the baby, and shoot the family dog, this guy is heartless and calculated with his murder. >> we mentioned the suspect was shot. he is expected to survive his injuries. investigators believe he targeted those homes and the victims at random. turning to the pandemic, if

keep in mind covid protocols. >> the virus uses all of our holidays to allow it to spread. labor day is not going to be any exception. we know that people who are vaccinated, unfortunately some of these people can transmit the virus. most don't. but some can. so if you're not vaccinated in that event, that's a major risk. >> when it comes to safe gatherings the advice includes for starters making sure you and your guests are vaccinated. if you're unvaccinated you should stay home. also, keep those gatherings outdoors and mask up if you're not sure that everyone has had their shots or if the crowd is larger than what you feel comfortable. keep the masks on as well. new questions about when booster shots might be available. dr. anthony fauci says pfizer's boosters will be ready by the

biden administration's september 20th target date. however, moderna's boosters are going to be delayed. health leaders have reportedly told the white house that fda needs more time to review moderna's application saying the drugmaker's data was inadequate and needs strengthening. a live look at oracle park where the giants will play next week at home. it is unclear if concession workers will continue serving the 40,000 fans there. on saturday, workers voted to strike after negotiations over issues including covid safety, health care and hazard pay stalled with the team's food service contractor bon appetite. workers are demanding an extra $3 an hour in hazard pay. they say 20 workers already have contracted covid since oracle park opened in full. they insist workers are safe. workers did go back to work after deciding to return to the bargaining table this upcoming week. >> a live look outside in san jose. you know, we mentioned to you

there is the spare the air alert in effect today because of the smoke from the wildfires and smog. vianey arana has been monitoring all of that for us and as the sun comes up we see it a little bit this morning. >> you start to notice the orange glow, not just from the sun, right. it's a combination of the clouds and the smoke and pollution. a lot of gunk out there. let's talk about the daytime highs. it's going to be pretty warm today even though the unofficial end of summer those temperatures don't want to let go. 70s in san francisco, 73 up through san raphael and even the north bay. we're going to be in 90s for today. down through the south bay, san jose 90 degrees. and then triple digits in through the interior. that spare the air alert will remain in place for today. hoping to get better air quality heading into tomorrow. the warm temperatures are also here to stay because of that high pressure, take a look at some of the warmer spots including livermore. we're going to be in the upper 90s for the remainder of the week, all the way through

i'm on my second cup of coffee and i hope you're enjoying your coffee at home. so far so good when it comes to the roads. livermore, 60 degrees. it's going to get hot. really quickly. whatever outdoor activities you had planned on doing make sure to get those out of the way you early. a spare the air alert which means unhalty air quality especially for interior areas like livermore. down through the south bay as well with some coastal clouds expected around san francisco. let's get a check of how the roads are doing. i want to show you drive times. northbound 101 from 85, 19 minutes. i haven't seen the metering lights turn on at the bay bridge toll plaza which is good news. northbound 280 to highway 85 seven minutes and northbound 85, 20 minutes. starting today general motors temporarily halting production at nearly all of its u.s. plants due to the overseas pandemic related chip shortage. the chips are used in a variety of car parts and small

electronics. demand for personal electronics such as laptops, that fueled that shortage. automakers have had to temporarily stop production or build vehicles just shy of all of those parts and await the chips to finish production. gm says the few of its plants will remain open. some bosses have a new way to monitor remote workers to make sure they're actually working from home. the guardian reports more companies are using tattleware. when example a digital surveillance platform called sneak which can take live photos every minute from a company laptop and other track information from key strokes to web browsing. some workers are calling this an invasion of privacy but other companies call it accountability. i posted this twitter poll because i want to know what you think about this. so far this morning about 28% of people say i'm okay with it.

but we still got a spare the air alert in place because of the poor air quality so you might notice a little bit of a hazy conditions out there. puts also cloud cover. take a look at san francisco right now. it's about 54 degrees. a good marine layer there. you can barely seat golden gate bridge shot. 54 degrees right now and it is going to be warm yet again today. i want to talk about the air quality because there is a difference between what's going on here and what's going on up in tahoe near the fire. we're seeing unhealthy air quality. that's going to remain in place until, you know, the fires, but as far as the wind goes, really the direction and the change and the calming of it helping to get a gain on the fires. moderate to unhealthy at times. take a look at the numbers according to the bay area air quality management district. it's not just the smoke. so i'm going to take this opportunity to sort of give you a bit of an explainer of why it's not just the smoke playing

a role and why you may not be seeing necessarily smoke, but it's hazy and it's still bad even if you can't see the smoke. here's the reason. you have the high pressure that's what i've been talking about. usually brings us happy weather but today hot and dry weather. think of it as the layer in the atmosphere and there's the wildfire smoke. then we've got the warm air mass, that traps all of that smoke and also the pollution, so when we talk about ozone, emissions from your car, but also the sun heats up the ground, and that change in temperature is what's going to bring all of those pollutants right to the surface level which is what we are breathing. temperatures are going to be in the 80s and 90s, triple digits at times. unfortunately no relief in sight. going to remain dry. quick reminder, look at the drought monitor. every week this gets updated. haven't seen an improvement. towards the later portion of the week we get a system that cools us off and maybe showers to the east. let's get a quick check of how

investigation is now under way. developing right now cal fire counts at least 18 wildfires burning up and down the state. you can see them here on your screen. some of the most notable, of course, the dixie fire and the caldor fire. but this morning there are concerns over a new wildfire prompting evacuation orders in auburn. the so-called bridge fire started yesterday, just a little after noon, under the forest hill bridge in placer county's recreation area. it quickly grew to 250 acre and triggered the evacuation order for about 500 people. there are evacuation warnings also in effect. right now the fire is burning out of control but so far no reports of any homes being destroyed. developing this morning, good news on the frontlines of the caldor fire burning near lake tahoe. but in the bay area, smoke from those wildfires across the region continue to downright be unhealthy for some neighborhoods. air district leaders are extending the bay area spare the air alert through today.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live this morning in the east bay. we understand that extension is continuing. talk to us about that. >> well, good morning to you marcus and kris as i watch the sunrise over dublin, it's hard to believe we're going to have bad air quality today because right now the sky for the most part is pretty clear but it is expecting to get worse. that is why the bay area air quality management district has extended the spare the air day today. for three reasons, one it's going to be hot. the pollution levels from the cars are up because more are getting on the roads, back to pre-covid activities and the smoke from the wildfires that you mentioned, especially the caldor fire which has burned just over 215,000 acres, but is now 44% one tand. this is the fire that's burning around lake tahoe. the winds have let up, up there and reduce the spread and made it easier for them to up the containment. yesterday authorities started letting people back into south lake tahoe.

22,000 people from the south shore were forced to evacuate last week, find shelter elsewhere and it was very stressful for them because they weren't sure if they were going to have a home to go back to. >> at the same time i'm sad because many people lose their house over there and there, in the fires, and everything lost. yeah. it's terrible. it's terrible for many people who lost their house. >> reporter: even though cal fire is allowing residents back into south lake tahoe, an evacuation warning is still in effect for that area. it's just no longer mandatory. you're allowed to go back, though they're advising hey, this still is an issue, just something to be aware of. because of today's spare the air alert the bay area air quality management district is asking to limit the amount of time in your car and if you're going to be doing anything outside, especially heavy exercise, you want to do that in the morning

while the ozone levels are lower. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. now we want to turn to vianey arana because she's been tracking the conditions for us. the air conditions in the bay area, how are things actually looking so far for us? >> yeah. we've been monitoring that. i had an update on hurricane larry. we're going to talk about the air quality because that is definitely something that is going to be impacting us not just for the local areas but also i mean depending on where you are around the coastline we could see the fog in san francisco so take a look at that. that's the golden gate bridge. very iconic for that summer fog. today is the unofficial end of summer but even then the temperatures are going to be so hot it's not going to feel that way from the north bay to santa clara valley, limit outdoor activities. a closer look the at your forecast coming up. another milestone number for you and the pandemic. an nbc news tally shows that the u.s. has reported more than 40 million covid cases. this is more than 650,000

americans who have died from the virus. covid's delta surge leading to a new shortage of icu beds in the central valley. fewer than 10% of the beds were available for three straight days last week in san joaquin valley. it's triggering rules that require nearby hospitals to accept transfer patients. leaders plan to decide thursday whether to extend the regulations if icu capacity falls to zero, hospitals statewide must also fall under similar rules. eight more days to vote in the recall special election. governor newsom will appear in southern california as part of his get out the vote tour. two polls are giving mixed signals about which direction the latino vote is going go. the newest poll from emerson college shows the majority favoring a recall of governor newsom. a recent uc berkeley poll found the opposite with a more pronounced spread against the

recall. experts agree the biggest wild card will be whether or not people turn out. voters in several bay area counties now have more options when it comes to casting those ballots that includes san mateo county which last friday opened its vote center for 11 days for those hoping to vote in person. that deadline is september 14th. critical morning on the road to recovery. pandemic related jobless benefits are ending for millions of americans. >> "today in the bay's" thom jensen is digging deeper into who might be feeling the pinch the most this morning and some families are holding on by a thread. >> reporter: they are. this hits on labor day, a day set up in 1894 to honor the american with worker. they're losing their benefits today in an attempt in large part to try to get people to go back to work. it's gone into effect in a lot of states and hits a lot of categories. let me go over some of these categories that include part-time workers, contract and

gig workers, millions of self-employed in the state also losing those add-on benefits and many out of work for a long time, special pandemic exceptions for people who had run out of state benefits also losing relief. anyone still on extended benefits, 2 million californians, and also those who don't qualify for regular unemployment lose those $300 per week payments that they've been getting during the pandemic. this all started right at the beginning of the pandemic. we talked to an expert, a former edd director who said considering the sheer number of people losing benefits here, this will force people to make difficult choices about returning it work while the virus and pandemic are still very real. >> what's different today that i see is that the return to work is much more hesitant is a part of that is the health concern, part is child care and part is reconsidering their occupations. the number of job seekers has picked up. we are hoping that this will

help kickstart many aspects of the labor market to bring the job seekers back. >> reporter: many states have already foregone their federal unemployment benefits, those extensions, those pandemic add-on because they were trying to get workers to come back in the force. at last count there was more than 20 states who had ended them. on labor day they end here in california and around the rest of the country affecting millions of people and maybe it will force people to go back to work as we all know, restaurants and many retail stores have had a difficult time hiring people. now people having to make difficult decisions starting on labor day. live in east county, east bay, thom jensen, "today dining migh to stay in california. the new bill is awaiting the

governor's signature to assist restaurant's recovery. it will grant a grace period for restaurants relying on the expanded outdoor space. the engs tension would start once the current emergency order is lifted and allow restaurants to apply for permanent outdoor expansion. san francisco state senator scott weiner is one of the bill's co-authors. >> developing this morning, tens of thousands without power one week after hurricane ida made landfall in louisiana. full restoration not expected until the end of the month. new york, cleanup there is under way. the new governor signed a fast track declaration to provide funds for temporary housing, counseling and jobless benefits. >> i want to be targeted and bring all the resources to bear to help these people who need help getting their lives back in order. what i'm requesting from the president is what is known as not just the public assistance but individual assistance. that will give direct money for people to rebuild their homes.

from grant line road to 680, 16 minutes, 680 to vargas road ten minutes. full forecast and traffic report coming up. >> thanks, vianey. saturday will be a somber day of reflection for america. it will mark 20 years since the 9/11 attacks forever changed our country. a small service will be held at the flight 93 memorial in union city. organizers want to keep it small and brief because of covid concerns. a moment of silence will help at 10:03 when flight 93 crashed into a pennsylvania field. a lot of people grew up and lived here in the bay area including the pilot jason dahl. the plane was headed to san francisco. we spoke with our aviation consultant who was working at san francisco international that day. >> we had never planned for anything like this. we had an emergency plan about three inches thick that covered crashes and hijackings and bombings and earthquakes, nothing such as this. we took bits and pieces of the plan and cobbled something together.

i've often said, no one knew what to do that day, no one was trained what to do that day, but we all knew what to do when the time came. >> 40 people were on flight 93. we'll have complete coverage of the 9/11 attacks 20 years later this saturday right here on nbc bay area. house democrats will vote on legislation aimed at stopping other states from implementing anti-abortion legislation after the country's most restrictive abortion law went into effect in texas last week. the women's health protection act aims to protect health care providers' abilities to deliver abortion services free from restrictions. speaker nancy pelosi says a democratic bill will be brought before the house after the current recess ends in two weeks. president biden is also pledging action including asking health and justice departments to see what they can do. more details now, ride sharing app lyft and uber will cover the legal fees of drivers if they are sued under the texas anti-abortion law.

under the law individuals can sue anyone who helps someone get an abortion. that could include medical providers to relatives but even uber drivers, someone who gives someone a ride, should not be at risk for helping people get where they want to go. >> not sea world but certainly close. south of san diego, a whale -- this is a whole pod of orcas there. this is cool. the captain posted they were halfway between rosa reto and encinitas. this is the first time they saw them and then spent the next five or so hours hanging out together right there as you can see. >> on that trip they probably got tipped pretty well. back on land how about two young bears getting a helping hand from humans. >> this is cool.

we're talking about the two abandoned bears, the cubs. fish and wildlife workers spotted in mid-august near sequoia national park in central california after realizing they were too young to go for it alone. the rangers brought them back to the wildlife center near san diego and they will be cared for there and given tools to survive and trained how to do that until old enough to be sent back into the wild and make it on their own. >> they will be kept wild. >> trending this morning, a stunt that requires some real tunnel vision. look at the video here, a pilot set the world record for the longest flight through a tunnel. it took off inside a ton until turkey. it hit speeds of 152 miles an hour. it was less than three feet off the ground. there was only about 15 feet between each wing and the tunnel wall. imagine doing that. like over in sausalito.

le digits because of the high pressu you know, the air quality is impacted by that so limit outdoor activities and keep the windows shut. when can we expect relief when it comes to the air quality? well, we've got a system coming into play later into the week just to our east. that could bring shower activity. no, not to us unfortunately, but closer to the sierra area. we could be monitoring the possibility of some thunderstorm activity there. we will notice an increase in the cloud cover locally going to help cool us off and we'll probably get some better clearing with that air quality starting tomorrow. temperatures remain in the 70s really all week long. until next weekend we'll finally get a little bit of relief dropping from the mid 90s down into some upper 80. still pretty warm in inland areas. let's get a check of how your traffic conditions are doing. tri-valley drive times right now, westbound 580 from grant line road only 16 minutes, southbound 680 doing well. no major accidents to report

deadly crash involving a wrong-way driver. it happened near the interchange of 580 around 1:00 this morning. one person died when two cars collided head on. one catching fire. now chp also says that one person has been arrested and an investigation is under way. >> developing this morning, smoke from wildfires across the region continue to be downright unhealthy depending on where you live. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us in the east bay this morning with a closer look at the impact here at home. >> reporter: well, the wildfire smoke is one reason why the bay area air quality management district has extended the spare the air day for today, monday, labor day, just another day. you've got the wildfire smoke from up north, you've got the hot temps and the car pollution. i mean we probably don't realize it or maybe you do if you're on the roads a lot more are getting back on the roads and back to the pre-covid routine. the air quality management district is asking that today if you can limit your time in the car so you can reduce those

ozone levels, and if you're going to do any exercise they rather you do it now for your own health before the ozone levels start to creep up. with regards to the wildfire the one burning around at that tahoe, that has burned 215,000 acres. cal fire has achieved 44% containment around that fire. the firefighters say the winds have let up which has given them an edge. yesterday, as you can see in this video, authorities started to let the 22,000 people who evacuated from south lake tahoe let them back into that area, get back to their homes. you'll recall they were evacuated last week and even allowed back into their neighborhoods. they're still an evacuation warning in effect, it's just not mandatory. reporting live in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. more firefighters are busy, this with a new fire burning out of control in gold country. the bridge fire started

underneath the foresthill bridge in placer county's recreation area. since sparking yesterday quickly growing to 250 acres and triggering evacuation orders for about 500 people. so far, there are no reports of any homes being destroyed. an emotional blow this weekend for firefighters on the frontlines of the dixie fire burning near chico. a veteran national forest firefighter died from illness there. we know his death is not directly related to the fire, however it's not clear whether he became sick while battling the flames. containment is now at 56% and the dixie fire has destroyed nearly 700 homes. new overnight taliban fighters are claiming to control the last hold out in afghanistan. this is a province north of kabul. it was the only territory that did not fall during last month's takeover. meanwhile, the taliban also reportedly blocking several american planes from taking off. now those planes were supposed to help evacuate hundreds of people including americans left behind when the u.s. withdrew last week.

one congressman says the taliban are looking to get something in return for allowing those planes to fly. it is labor day but it is also the expiration date for federal unemployment benefits and they have now expired for millions of americans. many people call this a lifeline during the pandemic, about a half -- about a million self-employed contract workers and gig employees. also anyone who does not qualify for state unemployment benefits and about 2 million californians on extended benefits. those who qualify for regular unemployment will not receive their additional $300 a week in federal aid. last look at that forecast for you. >> it's going to be another hot day even in the 70s for san francisco. spare the air alert in place. 90s in the forecast. a check of your traffic conditions. overall no major accidents so a reminder about mass transit. the sunday service running for
