we are broadcasting to your tv if you're watching that way, maybe watching as we're streaming live, take us anywhere you go at nbcbayarea.com. thank for joining us. i'm in for laura this week. >> i'm marcus washington. a live look across the bay area this morning and an alert as we get the day started. hot weather is expected for the bay area prompting a flex alert and of course you're being asked to conserve power from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. to reduce the strain on the power grid. >> let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. seems hotter than we thought. >> it's going to be hot again today but in terms of our air quality we are going to see it improving in parts of the north bay. still moderate air quality and in the south bay. take a look at these temperatures how hot it's going to be this afternoon. reaching up to 103 degrees in

antioch and livermore. we do have the excessive heat warnings in effect for solano county but elsewhere we're dealing with some really hot inland temperatures and it's going to be like this for one more day. we'll talk more about this and cooling ahead but what other things we're watching is coming up in a few minutes. at least one person now confirmed dead. this is after a powerful earthquake striking near the mexican resort city of acapulco. the state governor in mexico says the victim was killed by falling debris in a nearby qua. this you can seeite here the chandelier swaying in the town of pueblo. some four hours away. meanwhile in mexico's capital of mexico city the ground shook for nearly a minute in some parts. some people evacuated briefly but most of them quickly went back inside because of the wet weather. there are so far no reports of

extensive damage and authorities say 92 aftershocks were felt in the hours after that initial quake hit. and now to the trial that we'll be watching very closely, so many places, opening statements in the highly anticipated trial of former silicon valley titan elizabeth holmes begins this morning. you are looking live outside the federal courthouse in san jose and homes has pleaded not guilty to wire fraud conspiracy charges. the founder and former ceo of theranos is accused of defrauding investors with patients and doctors who relied on blood tests conducted by her tech company. once valued at $9 billion, investors poured hundreds of millions of dollars into that now defunct start-up. make sure to stick around at 5:30. scott mcgrew will break down what we need to know as we watch that trial today. the countdown to the recall race is on and we are just under a week until election day. that race will determine the immediate future of california

and it will determine the political future of governor gavin newsom. as "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney reports with time running out all sides are breaking out harsh words. >> let's wake up to what this recall is really about and what's at stake. >> reporter: governor newsom in san francisco's mission district making his case to keep his job in the recall election and he's about to get some headline grabbing help. the white house announcing president biden will be campaigning with newsom early next week. on twitter vice president kamala harris showing her support ahead of their joint campaign appearance, there are 46 replacement candidates to choose from on the ballot but newsom only went after one, the gop frontrunner. >> larry elder not only, you know, supported donald trump, he's to the right of donald trump. >> reporter: elder also in attack mode today blaming newsom for a slew of problems. >> crime is going up, the cost of living is going up, homelessness is going up, quality of our schools are going down, business people are leaving. >> reporter: the recall election

is resonating with voters. research by political data ink shows 28% of ballots have been returned. ballots not returned are in the hands of groups that tend to vote democrat. >> and the voters that still have outstanding ballots, you know, are young people, latinos, other minorities, renters. those are generally not the kind of voters that would be fertile ground for a conservative republican running in california. >> reporter: democrats appear to be more energized than republicans accounting for 32% of total votes, independents accounting for 28%, republicans 21%. but nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston says gms may not be voting along party lines. >> we don't know how many voted but voted for the recall. that's a slippery slope. at one point about 25% according to some polls recently about 10%, but we don't know. >> reporter: whoever comes out on top in next week's election there's going to be another election, a traditional one in 14 months.

continue to undergo routine testing for covid and new treatments will become available including an oral medication to help people before they get sick. preparations are already under way in contra costa county where health officials there are preparing for covid protocols for the next five to ten years. hundreds of people in san francisco are getting vaccinated all because of one local organization. it's called personal touch and it was created by a student vaccine ambassadors, the program. this is where they hire high school and college students to reach out to people in neighborhoods where vaccination rates are low and hiring 15 students to continue the program through december. the deadline to apply is friday. former ambassadors who are san francisco state students say people had questions and they were willing to listen. >> we could identify with them. for example, i'm a latina. i didn't go there with i'm a doctor or anything, so people didn't feel like we were lying to them.

they felt like we were being truthful. >> the program manager says since april the student ambassadors have helped 1,000 get vaccinated. more evacuations are being lifted as firefighters are gaining containment on the caldor fire. that fire has been burn for about a month near lake tahoe. the caldor fire now 50% contained and this comes after the flames wiped out entire neighborhoods in el dorado county. it's scorched more than 217,000 acres and nearly 800 homes were destroyed. you know, a family in lake tahoe who lost everything in the caldor fire is now getting a boost from family and friends. >> tiffany and her family's home now a pile of rubble. the family had to quickly evacuate from their home as the fire got closer and she says she watched on her ring camera as the fire approached the home and then just destroyed everything. so now they are living on a trailer on a friend's property. her sister in san diego now set up a gofundme page to help the family get back on their feet.

>> the support of our family and friends is so overwhelming. >> the family says they plan to rebuild that home and they hope to return to their lives as they were before the caldor fire. >> that fire concern something we're talking about heres in the bay area. >> yeah. >> all right. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those conditions. of course our weather conditions many times fuel the fires. >> absolutely. and they've made so much progress with trying to get that fire contained. this is an active network of fire sensors and yellow shows where the fire has burned, but we are also seeing very few spots where we have red that shows the active flames that are still ongoing. we'll be monitoring that. here's what i'm watching. today it's still going to be hot for those inland areas and we have the hazy sky. as we go through the rest of the week it will be cooling and i'm watching a chance of some lightening as well as a fire danger heading toward the end of

the week. today we have the heat advisories in effect for solano county and areas to the east. some of these numbers just hot all over the bay area as you make your way inland. we're going to keep it cool and mild near the coast. i'm watching this and talk about what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. you have a crash in fremont. >> i do. thankfully took about 20 minutes but they got everything including the big rig as far as i understand over to the shoulder and it's northbound 680 into sunol, counter whatever commute would be for the morning. about now it's even. here 84 we have the overnight construction. we know about that typical closure through miles, another typical closure north 242 off 680. i thought it was only going to be a couple lanes closed but it does look like there's a full closure right now. note that, use 680 to highway 4. everything else is smooth. back to you. >> thank you. coming up on "today in the bay," nearly two decades after 9/11, two victims have just been

good wednesday morning. as you're heading out in concord you're stepping out to temperatures in the upper 60s. it's already warm and it's going to be another hot day. the temperatures heat up fast. what's ahead and our air quality and some cooler weather in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> live look at the traffic in dublin, these folks getting ahead of any of the backup. altamont pass looks great for westbound 580. let's check in with bertha. good morning, mike. good morning to you. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. we've got wall street this morning looking like it's going to be a flat open. we had a mixed session yesterday. the dow falling nearly 270 points as investors came back from the holiday weekend, a bit unsure about the toll that the delta variant may have on the economy after we got that disappointing unemployment

number last friday. the nasdaq rising slightly to close at yet another record high. traders are expecting more volatility until the end of the year. the s&p 500 kind of the broader representation of the market, is already up 20% this year. in focus today we get reports on consumer credit and the job openings and labor turnover survey known as the jolt report. that looks beyond the monthly employment report and gives us a sense of how many people are actually leaving their jobs and it also gives us a sense of how many openings there are, which these days top the number unemployed. amazon is expanding its cashierless stores. now it's going to open two whole foods stores next year that lets shoppers basically grab and go. they can grab what they want and leave without having to open their wallet. cameras and sensors track what's

taken off of the shelves after you have scanned your account code and then items are charged to the customer's amazon account. self-checkout will still be available that take cash, card, and other types of conventional payment. the stores will be in sherman oh and washington, d.c. mark your calendars that time of the year, apple says it's going to have its event next tuesday called california streaming. the company is expected to unveil the latest range of iphone models as it was last year the event will be streamed online because of the pandemic. analysts expect smaller changes to the iphone including improvements to the camera and battery life. last year's iphone 12 was the first to include wireless capability with faster download speeds and they just keep getting better and better it seems those phones. i only just got an iphone 12 and

extra day this week. >> for a lot of people it's a short week because they have monday off and i had monday and tuesday off. it's all good. let's talk about what's going on as we're seeing -- we're seeing a little bit of ground clutter here. wanted to show you the overall picture of what's going on. we're seeing cpl of storm syste approaching the pacific northwest and we're getting much more of a breeze that's helping to push out some of the smoke and also we are going to see some better air quality today. so that's going to be a huge improvement over what we've seen and this continues as we get this ocean breeze clearing out our air. it does look much better for tomorrow, but still those fires are ongoing and then we turn our attention to other concerns. we have some still really hot temperatures for our valleys today. take a look at where we're at about 4:30 this afternoon, triple-digit temperatures in concord and fairfield. hot in livermore after hitting 103 and san jose in the upper

80s. i think we'll hit the low 90s today. doesn't cool off much tonight but we are going to see slightly cooler temperatures and make progress and continue to cool off as we go towards the end of the week. then we're going to see a weather system approaching that could enhance the potential of some dry lightning. let me show you what's going on here. we're going to see a lift in the atmosphere kind of meeting up with some moisture and it does show that some of our models show a high chance that a few of these isolated spots in the north bay mountains this is thursday afternoon could see some isolated thunderstorms. not a lot of rain with some lightning and then another chance on friday morning at 1:00 in the morning, going to see the system sweep through and it's going to bring in a chance of moderate to a high chance that we could see some lightning in here, not good news because we know our vegetation is extremely dry and there will be a high fire danger coming along with this. really concerning here. we'll be watching that from thursday into friday morning.

and our temperatures will be coming down. our inland valleys going from the upper 90s to the upper 80s for the weekend. hopefully we don't have any issues between thursday night and friday and then for san francisco, coming out of those mid 70s to the upper 60s. mike, we're looking at a smooth drive coming down from the north bay, but heading in toward the north bay. look at that. those cones. we're limited with lanes. there is a crew there and maybe shows that slowing right here. some of those lanes aren't actually open so it may not be slow moving vehicles but the averages, right, that's what we commute on the maps. we're looking at green sensors most of the areas, that east bay crash did clear from palo alto. kari knew i was watching that. folks were watching vasco which is at speeds out of brentwood and discovery bay, mild slowing for the altamont, not a serious issue and the crash in fremont did clear from north 680. ahead of this weekend's

is ticking under california's special covid-19 sick leave policy. it's expected to expire at the end of the month. under that policy workers get two extra weeks of paid sick time if infected with coronavirus related illnesses. the looming expiration causing worry for low-income workers many who have jobs that force them to interact with the public. state lawmakers have until friday to act if they want to extend that policy. you're watching "today in the bay." we'll be right back.
