morning. we're going to start with smoke in the sky this morning. we'll get to meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> good morning. as you're waking up and heading out the door, air quality looks pretty good. this is our current sensors where we see green that means good. but in the trivalley moderate air quality there as well as the south bay. a few spots waking up to smoke here and there. as we go into this afternoon, moderate air quality for parts of the north bay, the coast as well as the east bay. south bay should see some improving air quality and moderate for santa clara valley. this is as temperatures will stay very warm today, reaching into the mid 90 for the inland east bay. low 90s for the north bay and san jose and parts of the south bay in the mid to upper 80s and low 90s there. we'll talk more about what's ahead as our temperatures come down going through the week and looking even ahead to the weekend as we see some major changes. that's coming up in a few minutes. kris and laura. >> thank you very much. the recall is just one day away.

governor newsom fighting to keep his job with dozens of candidates hoping to replace him. president biden will be in california today to campaign for the governor as his competitors continue to chris-cross the stays. as sergio quinn tano reports everyone is pulling out the stops. >> at a news conference in los angeles larry elder says supporters of governor newsom are supporters of the status quo. >> what i find kind of amazing about this race, rose, virtually nobody has defended governor newsom's record on almost anything. >> reporter: the conservative broadcasters from southern california has a long list of reasons why voters should recall governor gavin newsom. >> crime is up, homelessness is up. the average home in california is $800,000. he shut down the state while having his kids enjoy in-person private education. >> doesn't believe there should

be any corporate tax, doesn't believe in an assault weapons ban. doesn't believe that tobacco should be regulated. doesn't believe a woman has the right to choose. >> reporter: governor newsom drawing a sharp contrast to his leading challenger during a rally in southern california's san fernando valley. this is a recall election that seemed to start with momentum against governor gavin newsom. initial polling in the cycle suggested he could lose. recent polling has changed. tracking from berkeley shows governor newsom could survive the recall election with 60% of those surveyed saying he should stay in office. the governor's final campaign push will include a swing by president biden who will fly in to long beach to rally with newsom. republican leaders are confident the recall will go their way, but if newsom holds on to his seat they worry about the political power he could use after the election. >> my concern is that he's going to continue to abuse even

the latest on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. new this morning, video of a hiker being rescued on the peninsula. the chp posted it saying the hiker suffered an undisclosed medical condition east of half moon bay. they located the hiker and then hoisted that hiker to safety. there's no update at this point on the hiker's condition. developing right now, more evacuees allowed to return to their homes in the burn area of the caldor fire. but in many cases these people are returning to a little more than ashes and rubble in the area around grizzly flat. yesterday authorities reopened more evacuated and shut down areas including a major stretch of highway 50. the fire is now 65% contained. now containment in the dixie fire now at 65%, though firefighters are concerned about conditions taking a step backwards this week. over the weekend crews made headway on the frontlines. the fire near lake el my nor is

1 million acres burned, by far california's worst wildfire this season. and that wildfire smoke could start to hit the bay area as early as this morning and we could start seeing the smoke. let's go to meteorologist kari hall tracking where we're going to see this. it's been nice to have a little bit of clear air and easy breathing. >> yeah. it has been a nice break over the weekend. we have some of the blue skies returning even though we had temperatures that were heating up. now as we take a look at our air quality forecast, we are going to see some hazy conditions going into today. where we'll be watching will be the north bay. this is where we'll start to see a little bit more of the unhealthy air quality moving in to parts of lake and northern napa counties as well as solano counties as we see some of the fires farther to the north coming directly down into the north bay. the rest of the bay area is actually looking pretty good. as we look at our temperatures for today, we'll reach into the mid to upper 80s, some low 90s

and start out early tomorrow morning with temperatures in the 50s and 60s and we will start a cooling trend over the next few days. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you are tracking a crash in san francisco. >> i am. it happened some time ago, but there was some debris reported at the fifth street off ramp off west 80 towards the skyway. not heavily traveled right now, but you know what, we have light traffic all over the bay. we're watching for the debris update but doesn't look like a problem. over here saw a lot more slowing for the last few minutes. i believe the crew getting off at the richmond bridge towards the east shore freeway, eastbound 580 is clearing i believe as you head down towards the merge. should look like they will be cleared by 5:00 when they're scheduled to be gone and a smooth drive around the rest of the bay, although maybe something new going on for 580. reports for oakland coming up. back to you. >> thank you, mike. in the east bay, an early morning argument on i-80 ends with a crash that left two men dead. this was the eastbound lanes of

interstate 80 around 1:30 sunday morning west of university avenue. the chp says the two men crashed into one another and then were arguing on the freeway about who was responsible for the collision. then another car came along and hit both men while they were standing in the middle of the lanes on the freeway. the driver who hit the men stayed at the scene and is cooperating with officers. good news for commuters, additional vta light rail service is now available. blue and orange lines are back in full service. the green line still in partial service, but will be back to fully operational in the coming weeks. all vta light rail service was shut down for months after the deadly shooting at a vta rail yard. nine vta workers were killed by a coworker. coming up on "today in the bay," righting wrongs in the justice system. a state program making a debut in the area, and how prosecutors are helping to reduce sentences considered unjust. a sign of recovery, after suffering for months because of

for fairfield. mainly clear, temperatures right at about 60 degrees. cool start to the day. it will warm up quickly with a lot of sunshine but also looking a little bit hazy. we'll talk more about our air quality and what's ahead temperature wise coming up in a few minutes. >> i think all commuters are super, but we're looking at commuters through fremont, 880 the nimitz, well populated but good spacing here. super person is our new friend silvana. >> good morning. i'm from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher this morning as the markets come off a negative week. the dow and s&p 500 posting their worst week since june and both are on a five-day losing streak. that's the longest for the s&p since february. friday's move came on the back of a report showing producer prices rose more than expected in august. we get another key gauge of inflation tomorrow and the consumer price index which could show how much of these higher costs are being passed on to

consumers. also in focus this week, reports on industrial production, retail sales and consumer sentiment. disney will release the first of its films this year exclusively in theaters. the move follows the success of "shang chi" and legend of the ten rings which has topped the box office two weeks in a row. disney's film will get a 30 day release in theaters before disney plus. west side story and the eternal will be in theaters for a minimum of 45 days. costco is already getting into the holiday spirit. the retailer has brought back its popular wine and beer advent calendars. the wine calendars $99.99, 24 half bottles of different varieties which costco says flies off the shelves. the beer calendar sells for $59.99 includes 24 cans of german beer. the calendars are expected to be in most costco stores by the first week of october. back to you. >> all right. now i know what i'm getting

hey, good monday morning to you. a live look outside overlooking downtown san jose. the lights illuminating the night before this sun arrives on this monday morning. starting out our workweek, 4:47 right now. >> good to be with you. we want to check in with mike in a bit, but since things are slow we'll start with kari. >> we're going to have concerns about our air quality as we have the very large fires burning especially across northern california that's going to start to settle in today as our temperatures head towards the mid 80s, cupertino is going to have a warm one. 86 in san jose and 92 in morgan hill. seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as our temperatures in walnut creek

reach 92 today. it's going to be hot. 96 in antioch. 33 in pleasanton. daly city and half moon bay mid 60s there. palo alto heading up to 83 and 71 in the mission district. north bay temperatures reaching 95 in clearlake and novato up to 88 degrees. here's a look at our air quality forecast. light blue indicates a hazy sky and that's where we'll see for our inland areas. where we see a little bit of the yellows and reds indicates unhealthy air quality and that will start to move into the north bay later today as well as early tomorrow morning as we're still seeing the fires across northern california, mainly the monument fire, and some of the other smaller fires that are burning in that area push right down into the north bay. the rest of the bay area is looking fair. into the rest of the week it's dry. what i'm watching for the weekend, a chance of some showers moving in to far northern california. that would be amazing.

but this line just kind of falls apart as it moves into the bay area. at least some rain close by. this wouldn't be unheard of to get some rain in the middle to end of september, but this time of the year, we start to head out of our extremely dry month into some of our wetter months. it would be nice to see that, but it doesn't look like we'll get a lot out of that but we'll have a cool down and our temperatures from the low to mid 90s to the mid 70s this weekend. that is going to be amazing and it's going to help clear out our air quality just a bit. looking at san francisco, low clouds and we may have drizzle for saturday as the temperatures only reach the low 60s. that's a cool down from the 70s we're starting with this week. mike, heading out the door how is it looking for the commute? >> very calm. time to give you a cool down. i like that. no major problems or additional issues for the debris, but i marked that into san francisco. 580 a crash around 150.

there was another at 98. both on the shoulder with no injuries, no debris, no problem. a longer drive, kari talked about super commuters from the traci area and that little slowing from the altamont pass typical into livermore. vasco at speed out of this area. commuters from brentwood, discovery bay, byron, joining in without any delay toward that dublin interchange right there. a smooth flow of traffic over the mountains. rarely have problems there. don't have any but did check on the crews in san mateo county. they're continuing to work on the expansion and want hov lanes to hopefully make things smoother on the peninsula in the evening and morning. back to you. 4:50 right now. the ceo of san francisco's salesforce telling workers they're not bound to remaining in texas amidst the state's restrictive reproductive laws marc benioff tweeted a response to a story voicing concern

saying salesforce will help employees leave texas if need be. the company did not issue further comment. texas no longer allows abortions after six weeks into a woman's pregnancy. >> happening san leandro will swear in a new police chief. he served as police chief in monterey county's seaside and before that worked for 25 years in the ft. worth texas police department. today's swearing in is at 6:30. three bay area counties taking part in a pilot program designed to fix unjust prison sentences, san francisco, contra costa county and santa clarita have agreed to be part of the first of its kind program. it allows prosecutors to recommend reviews of old cases. former bay area prosecutor hillary blout. >> they will invest $8 million across nine counties in california to support the work
