thanks so much for joining us. more on that in a bit. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez in for marcus. voting centers open in a matter of hours for the recall election. >> challengers are not just trying to get governor newsom out of office, many republicans are focused on the validity of the election even before it truly happens. larry elder is prepared to immediately challenge the outcome but the question this morning, is there any indication of widespread voter fraud? here's "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd. >> reporter: on the republican recall newsom website the allegation of voter fraud is the headline. voter integrity has been candidate larry elder's focus for weeks. he was questioned about that exclusively on nbc news. >> let us all work together to matter the results are to make sure the results are valid and legitimate and everybody who voted should have voted. let's do that together. >> is that a commitment.

>> let's do that together working together. >> reporter: what governor newsom says he want too, campaigning with president biden he's fighting against the republican grab of his seat using former president trump as his weapon. >> you saw what happened on election night. the big lie. we may have defeated donald trump but we have not defeated trumpism. trumpism is still on the ballot in california. >> reporter: cal state east bay political science professor is analyzing the recall campaign strategy this way. >> republicans are a minority in california so what it says to me, they are claiming voter fraud at this stage is that they are worried that their base isn't mobilized. >> reporter: mobilized or not, those making sure your ballots are safe have been working for weeks to make sure there are no irregular fwlarties. registrar voter offices have rules and regulations in place

to make sure ballots are secure. >> all of our staff, our permanent staff and temporary staff, have all passed background checks before they are allowed to handle the ballots and we keep two people with the ballots at all times. >> reporter: names and signatures are bar coded and cross checked with signatures on file. the computers use ready secure and not connected to the internet to prevent hacking. >> it is challenging but we're part of democracy. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." the outcome of today's election has the potential to have national political consequences. whoever becomes or stays governor could appoint a replacement in the senate. many have speculated senator dianne feinstein might leave office before her term ends. >> with democrat only having a 50/50, zero seat advantage in the senate, if senator dianne feinstein, who is getting up there in age in declining

the criminal fraud trial of elizabeth holmes. the trial has been on hold for nearly a week because of covid concerns. shortly after opening statements a juror told the judge that he might have been exposed. the theranos founder and former ceo faces wire fraud and conspiracy charges and prosecutors say she misled investors about her company's blood testing technology. she could face 20 years in prison if convicted. stick with nbc bay area for continuing coverage of the elizabeth holmes trial. we will walk you through every step of the way with team coverage and analysis and we are following the latest on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. developing this morning, the judge overseeing pg&e's criminal probation digging deeper into what started the dixie fire. as of this morning the fire is 75% contained but yesterday, a pg&e crew member spent two hours answering questions about the power line now suspected in sparking it. a judge is considering tighter

conditions on pg&e before his authority ends early next year. president biden says the caldor fire shows why boosting america's infrastructure is so important. he made the comments after taking an aerial tour of the damage yesterday with governor newsom. biden also argued climate change is the driving force behind these kinds of massive fires. the caldor fire is now 67% contained. >> nice to hear the permission inching higher every day. we did see some of the smoke from the fires yesterday. >> yeah. not only those fires but also up around parts of lake and mendocino counties. we've got some fires burning a little bit closer to home pushing some of the smoke into the bay area, especially the north bay and that's where we'll be watching for late this morning into the afternoon where we will see some slightly more unhealthy air quality compared to the rest of the bay area. getting a closer look, a lot of smoke towards clearlake and the east over parts of the skraemts

valley. the wide view does show we will see some smoke moving in today but hazy conditions as we are headed towards another day of some hot temperatures reaching 95 in concord today, napa 92 while san francisco will start out with clouds and see a high there of 70 degrees. we'll be watching that and talking about a cool down. >> i got a text from ace rail we're text buddies looking at a problem between stockton and lathrop. no word of a vehicle on the tracks. ace train 1 should have left at 4:00 this morning. 4:01. it's still there, can't get to lathrop just yet. we'll see if they continue with the other three trains. the other systems they have good discounts with the clipper cards. the rest of the bay a nice easy

san francisco. the blinking light on the transamerica building. it will be a very nice day out today. we're expecting cooling temperatures which always make mike and me smile. >> yeah. >> we are. >> not so much kari and i. >> you like the heat. >> mike and i, no heat. >> it's been nice and pleasant afternoon. but now we are in september, i had to stop and think about it. you go by the pumpkin spice you see throughout. >> i had some this morning. so good. let's get a look at our air quality. that's been one of the major concerns we've had here because we've seen a lot of smoke moving through and so today it's still going to look hazy outside. our inland areas are going to heat up quickly and see still some drifts of smoke coming in. as we zoom in on the south bay, our temperatures this afternoon reach up to about 85 degrees. that's about where we were yesterday. 90 in morgan hill. still going to be hot spots like

the inland east bay, antioch towards 96 and 81 in vallejo. hayward 83 degrees while half moon bay will reach into the upper 60s and palo alto expect a high of 83 degree. that seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen. we take a look at san francisco and the outer sunset heading towards 66 degrees. much cooler there compared to the 99 we'll see in ukiah today and sonoma reaching 92 degrees. so even though it's hot today we're about to start a cooling trend. a stronger ocean breeze will help cool us off over the next few days. take a look at the rain moving in between late saturday into early sunday. most of the showers staying to the north of us. it's going to be good to see the rain coming in, even if we miss out on it it's going to be moving over the fire zones like the dixie fire area and could move over the caldor fire area. that's going to be good in the fire fooit. we've been tracking the tropics

where what was hurricane nicolas made land fall dumping rain over louisiana and texas. a full update at about 5:08. as we get a look at our seven-day forecast, we are going to see our temperatures headed towards the mid 90s. still hot, but we're going to start a cooling trend over the next few days. take a look at these temperatures and what we'll see going into the weekend with upper 70 and low 80s. more clouds. that rain staying to the north of us. san francisco is going to get a lot of mist and drizzle over the weekend. looking at temperatures in the mid 60s there. it's still going to be warm and you will get afternoon sunshine today. mike, you were seeing some problems already happening for the commute. >> that's right. not necessarily a problem, but a note. a problem if you're not aware, the morning commute gets the adjustment on the bridge and the crews we saw them backing up taking the cones away and there will be crews back and forth on the northbound side, two lanes should be ready.

north of there, the exits, one of the first exits off highway 101 there may be activity on the ramp from an earlier disabled vehicle. another toward the richmond bridge toll plaza. once check once chp arrives and. 242 clear by the time you get to concord avenue. smooth flow of traffic through contra costa county. the roadways at speed. note for the rails where the problem sticks around between stockton and lathrop, train 1 cannot get to lathrop. the station is held unoccupied because of a vehicle on the tracks. we'll get an update. ace train moves it or move to train number three. it's a counting thing they do. doesn't mean a train came through. we'll track it. back to you. governor newsom with an update on some much needed rent relief for people struggling to make it in the bay and elsewhere. in statement he announced more than $1 billion is -- has been

paid out or approved for pandemic related rent and utility assistance. that includes $526 million dispersed so far to 45,000 households statewide. in totals the state has received more than 243,000 applications and in all there's about $7 billion available in rental and utility assistance. another round of stimulus checks going out to to californians next week. nearly two-thirds of californian taxpayers will receive a payment of $600. qualifying families with children will receive an additional $500. to qualify residents might have filed 2020 taxes by october 15th, 2021, and have an adjusted gross income of under $75,000. you must be a state resident and cannot be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer. >> live look at sfo this morning, despite the growing

concerns around the delta variant and rising cases, adding several locations to albania, belize, grenada, serbia and slovenia. you avoid all international travel until fully vaccinated but also check your covid requirements ahead of time so you can make sure you can come home. giants fans one step down. first team in baseball to clinch a postseason birth. things didn't stay close against the padres. brandon bell a four inning home run. giants win 9-1. break out the champagne. the earliest they've clenched a spot in friz history and still have to win the division but they're 2 1/2 games ahead of the dodgers. don't forget this friday the giants take on the braves on nbcbayarea.com. come starts at 6:30. a fun one to watch.

in a unanimo vote the city council decided university avenue should reopen october 15th, california, avenue will remain closed until june of next year. during the pandemic both have been closed to cars, so restaurants could offer more outdoor dining. we'll be right back.
