here we are friday morning. good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 4:30. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. now time to get a look at meteorologist kari hall's forecast for today. standing by, there she is. kari, how are we looking on this friday? >> yes, a great friday ahead. we're going to see better air quality and also keep the comfortable temperatures we had yesterday as we take a look at our real-time sensors for air quality right now, a lot of green. of course green means go. go outside and enjoy it today as we are also tracking some much needed rain farther to the north. it's now moving closer to portland and will be moving to our north as we go into the weekend. today temperatures headed for the 60 near the coast and low 80s for our inland valleys. hayward high of 69 and 76 in san jose. we'll talk about what's ahead for our weekend forecast and where we could see a little bit of rain coming up in just a few

minutes. mike, heading out the door how is it looking? >>. >> we'll get to mike in a little bit i'll take it. an fda advisory committee will review a recommendation for booster shots but there's growing division over who needs one and what will be the process of getting one. ian cull explains. >> reporter: members of the fda are voicing support and opposition before an advisory committee will vote on the future of boosters specifically a third dose of pfizer's vaccine. pfizer says its data shows booster shots are needed six months after the second dose as protection begins to wane, but its vaccine continues to be highly effective in preventing hospitalization and serious illness. a new study in the "new england journal of medicine" found effectiveness of a booster dose but other scientists say current evidence does not, therefore, appear to show a need for boosting in the general population.

some doctors worry about the messages from the white house preempting regulators' guidance. >> get a booster shot. >> it has made people feel that the vaccines aren't working when they are still working. >> reporter: infectious disease specialist dr. gandhi believes there will be a compromise. >> and i think what's going to happen is they're going to say let's give third shots for those over 60, people in long-term care facilities and maybe health care workers. >> reporter: the immunocompromised she points to recent data as to why. >> that in countries that are developed and have lots of vaccines and low vaccine update, israel and the u.s. are the two countries, there is more waste circulating virus. we have more transmission going on. and in that case, someone who is over 60, for example, is more susceptible to a breakthrough that could be more severe. >> reporter: but for those younger than 60, dr. gandhi doesn't think boosters are needed yet. >> i'm not worried that we need to be doing this just because. we need to be dosing for some

crisis. governor newsom signed two laws promising to add tens of thousands of housing units statewide. the governor calls it california's new housing accelerator. one measure makes it easier to build denser housing such as duplexes in areas only zoned for single family homes. another streamline zoning for large-scale multiunit housing such as computer commute villages near transit centers and funding for transitional housing for the homeless. happening today, an east bay city will roll out a new neighborhood watch for wild animals. the city of moraga is teaming up with the california department of fish and wild life on wildlife watch. the program is designed to train people to prevent an attack on pets and humans from a wild animal. >> the neighborhood watch is designed to try to prevent crimes and other services in the neighborhood. designed to prevent conflicts with coyotes and other wildlife.

>> in the seven month period in july of 2020 a single coyote bit five people in the moraga area. two attacks included toddlers. leaving the community on edge, of course. as the search for the coyote turned up nothing for months. a state wide effort returns tomorrow to try to tackle our climate in crisis. tomorrow is the 37th annual california coastal cleanup day. the event is running tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. to noon. taking place in one form or another in just about every county statewide. the cleanup efforts often include lakeshores, riversides and inland areas. and all bay area counties have cleanups going on which you can link to from the coastal commission's web page. looking for some charity work. we might be rolling up our sleeves. >> the forecast makes way for that too, kari. >> yeah.

i think you'll need a jacket along the coast. it's chilly, waking up to fog over san francisco even though we have a clear view right now. it's just above the surface. we're going to see more clouds moving in, even some spotty showers going into parts of the north bay by tomorrow afternoon. into the evening. it looks like we could see a chance of some off and on light showers for the north bay as it moves into san francisco. take a look at the timeline, 4:00 sunday morning we could see a little bit of rain quickly passing by before we wake up on sunday. then the rest of the day on sunday is looking very nice, but it's also going to be cooler than the weather we've had recently. we'll talk more about all of these temperatures and our rain chances in the forecast coming up. now let's head over to mike with an update on the morning commute. >> all right. pretty calm so i kind of sat out the first one. looking over here to dublin, a great job. you can relax for most of the drive out of the altamont despite the breezy warning.

historically negative for the market. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 are on track to end the week modestly higher. all three are slightly negative for the month. the global shortage of computer chips is getting worse forcing automakers to temporarily close factories including those that build popular pickup trucks. general motors is the latest to extend plans to idle some north american factories as a result of the worldwide semiconductor shortage. the company will add to scheduled downtime to seven plants in the united states, canada and mexico. southwest airlines the latest to incentury fize vooiz its employees to get the jab. the carrier is offering two days of pay for employees who are or will become fully vaccinated by november 15th. employees must share their vaccination status with the carrier. southwest said as of november 16th employees not vaccinated will not be eligible for paid time off if they become infect ord isolate after being in

very good friday morning to you. look at that. people up and out the door already getting a jump on their day. jump on the weekend. is that just us being optimistic because that's what we like to do? >> i know. >> there are perks for getting up this early in the morning. >> get to watch us. >> yeah. or start your weekend early as well. what does the forecast look like, kari? >> yeah. looks pretty good for today. i mean we really can't complain about this. take a look at our high temperatures. where we were yesterday is basically where we're headed for today with mid 70s for the south bay, milpitas reaching 76 to 81 in east san jose and as you head

down to the south county feeling nice and comfortable. highs reaching into the mid 70s for morgan hill and gilroy. for the east bay up to about 80 in concord and walnut creek, fremont reaching 74, oakland in the 60s today and cool temperatures near the coastline. palo alto low 70s for this afternoon with some low 60s downtown and in the mission district. as you head to ingleside upper 50s for a high with clouds and fog lingering. for the north bay we're up to 86 in clearlake and sonoma reaching 76 degrees. the rain and when we're going to see it mostly by tomorrow afternoon we could start to see spotty showers around ukiah and santa rosa, areas farther to the north will see a little bit of some rain. it starts to move in late saturday night near the coastline and in san francisco we could see a chance of some spotty light mist and drizzle,

heading into about 4:00 in the morning on sunday. that could also extend up towards fairfield with a brief light shower moving by. by the time we wake up on sunday morning, more of us waking up heading out it's going to be clear the rest of the day on sunday is looking pretty nice. what's going to be really beneficial with this system will be all of the fires burning and the fact that we could see some of those scattered showers moving over parts of the fire zones. we could see anywhere from about a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain near the dixie fire as well as the caldor fire. as for us, we could see up to a tenth of an inch of rain in a few spots, especially from oakland on northward. some of us may barely see anything at all so it's just going to be very hit or miss. as we take a look ahead for the next three months, climate prediction center putting out the outlook for what to expect and as far as rain there's an equal chance that we could get above our normal rain for the next several months from october to december as far as

temperatures, still expecting it to be warmer than normal which is what we've already had. it looks like the temperatures head right back up for the beginning of next week. at least we do have a little bit of a break from the warmer temperatures in the inland areas with the clouds and the spotty rain moving in for the weekend. next week, first day of fall, we'll be hitting 90 degrees. heading over to you, mike. any problems for the early morning commute? >> yes. look at that. over here. nice easy drive, beautiful view until you get to that number over there. 101, it's 280, my mistake, at 17, took this camera we rarely use for traffic because we're looking for a fire. roadside fire was reported at the 280/17 interchange. it was a small warming fire off the side of the roadway. nothing after that and it just cleared from the chp report minutes ago. this not yet cleared from the report. fremont, the crash that we're watching. the only real slowing that we see southbound from about south of thornton where the crash may

still be in the lanes. possibly your right two lanes may be affected by the crash. no major injuries south of dakota toward the dumbarton bridge. out of the altamont, still basically at speed. wind advisory from chp but they often give that for larger vehicles. vasco and highway 4 the longer drive through contra costa county or out of that county easy and is so the bay bridge toll plaza with no backup of course. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. we've got new developments in the case of a missing hiker. police chief of north port, florida, is speaking out after the release of body cam video of gabby petito. she and her fiance, brian laundrie, were on a cross-country tour documenting their journey on youtube and instagram. police released body cam video to an office responding to a call about a couple fighting. a video shows petito trying to explain what sparked the

argument along with laundrie talking to police. police tell the "today" show they've released some details to the public and purposely not released everything they know. >> we have not released every bit of information that we know to the public. we believe that some of that is helpful for the integrity of the investigation because certain people only know that information. >> authorities now call laundrie a person of interest in the case. you can see the full interview on the "today" show after "today in the bay." a pilot accused of misleading regulators about safety issues on the boeing 737 max jet may face criminal charges. "the wall street journal" reports the former boeing test pilot is expected to face federal charges in connection to the safety probe. the max jet involved in two cashes in 2018 and 2019 which left 346 people dead. the pilot served as a lead
