unhealthy air quality for people sensitive to that. today a lot of microclimates headed towards the 90s. we'll talk more about that and what is ahead. breaking news this morning, the new data finds that people that get one johnson & johnson shot will get 94% protection, and boosters six months out provide even better protection. in the meantime, pfizer says its vaccine is safe for children ages 5 to 11, and the fda still has yet to approve it and then it's up to parents. >> a plan to better protect schoolchildren during the pandemic. pfizer will soon ask the fda to use covid vaccine in kids 5 to

11. a trial of 2,000 kids showed they developed a strong immune response using just one-third the dose given to older age groups. >> these are amazing vaccines. >> we're really excited and happy to see how well the children and families did with these trials. we have been doing them since spring. >> the side effects were similar to the common ones the adults had, a day or two under the weather. >> if my children were between 5 and 11 and we had fda approval, absolutely they would be the first in time. >> covid cases in the u.s. have jumped 240% since july, and in california the cases have fallen recently. most parents we spoke with are on the fence. >> something i would definitely

are at 2.3%. it's going to be completely up to the health officials here. yeah, by the cdc criteria we could lift the indoor masks here in san francisco. >> and the antiviral oral medication at the first sign of symptoms is expected next week. >> if it reduces the disease in the outset. >> health experts do not expect a surge this winter because so many people are protected by vaccines or having been infected by the virus. extended protections will be talked about today. the eviction ban is set to expire at the end of the month.

it prohibits no fault evictions. moratorium for businesses would be extended only if the state agrees to do so as well. and then police are hoping a video could help solve a crime. the victims were shot in a nearby parking garage on third street the night of july 23rd. police say they actually had attended a concert at a nearby club. a woman that died after police say she was shot by a 15-year-old relative has been identified. san jose mercury is reporting that woman is 25-year-old lacea

this is when the caldor fire first erupted. at 8:00 a.m., caltrans reopens that stretch. this is near kye bruise and meyers. it's now 75% contained. >> it will be nice to see all that smoke clear up in the tahoe area. what about here, though? we have fires burning in sequoia. >> many of the smoke from the southern sierra fires will be going over tahoe, too. it will be smoky here and beyond. as we are waking up this morning we will see more of that smoke coming in. our temperature trend today, it's going to be hot this afternoon. even san francisco, we're talking about mid-80s today and upper 90s for the inland valleys this afternoon. at 4:00, expect temperatures in

apple just released the latest version of its operating system ios 15 with several features including the ability for face time to make calls to android users. users can now check their app privacy report which is showing how often they accessed their microphone. general motors will begin with replacing faulty battery models in the bolt vehicles. general motors also plans to roll out a software update for battery monitoring over the next two months. customers will need to take their bolt ez's to a dealership

good tuesday morning. taking a live look in san jose. terrific tuesday it is. >> i would say, too. let's keep that good feeling going this morning. kari has a look at the forecast. >> last full day of summer today. we are going to have temperatures really heating up later this afternoon. these early hours, the best time in terms of air quality and temperatures. santa rosa, as you are heading

out early it's in the low 50s. we will see temperatures in the upper 50s around sunrise and it will be warming up quickly. let's head to the southbound with a look at our high temperatures. 93 will be the high today in east san jose as well as los gatos and morgan hill. 97 in antioch and livermore. oakland today, 85. notice the cooldown at the bottom of the screen in the 7-day forecast. it's going to spike today, and our temperatures in daly city reaching 77. 90 in palo alto. san francisco, yes, it's going to be hot, 88 degrees in the mission district, and we are going to see some of the temperatures in the north bay up to 96 in ukiah and 93 in sonoma. the smoke is coming in and we will see it building for the south peninsula and east bay, and then it turns hazy for this evening. i do think we will have a

beautiful sunset, but you don't want to spend a lot of time out there breathing that in. tomorrow morning we will wake up to a hazy sky and it clears out as we go into tomorrow, and then this smoke is coming up from the south, and we are looking dry throughout the week. a stronger ocean breeze will help improve our air quality over the next few days. as a low develops off the coast it could bring in spotty showers around the fire zones but looks like right now some of the models are backing off. we will see a cooldown. upper 80s for the first day of fall, and then we are back to the low 90s for thursday and friday before we have a much more comfortable weekend. san francisco going from 86 today to, yeah, 69 tomorrow. that fog rolling back in to cool off those temperatures. mike, you have a new crash in san jose? >> we do.

the silicon valley looks great, northbound and westbound and that's a push for the build early in the commute, and we are looking at southbound 101 at brokaw. there's the airport right here. just past that around brokaw there's a report of the crash in the right two lanes but no slowings have showed up in the last few minutes. for the rest of the bay, we are looking at an easy, clear dry. contra costa county, aside from the crash just off the antioch bridge, it's a smooth drive in towards 242. and vasco as well, nice drive. 580, a little slowing off of the altamont pass. and then the man was the

person who filmed the police beating of rodney king, and he filmed the beating with the camera he just purchased. holiday's friends say he died sunday from covid complications. he was 61 years old. now to the missing person case that has been drawing nationwide attention. today an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the identity and cause of her death. in the meantime, petito's fiancé, brian laundrie, has not been seen since last tuesday. they set out on a cross-country trek together but he came back to florida alone on september 1st. a judge is expected to rule this week on whether the suspect in the disappearance of kristin

smart should go to trial. she was last seen 25 years ago. authorities earlier this year arrested a man, paul flores, and his father was arrested as an alleged accessory. testimony included a woman that claims flores once told her he, quote, took care of smart. the judge is determining if there's probable cause. more than 2,500 employees are suing for better pay. the class action lawsuit against disneyland, the employees allege the company is legally to pay a liveable wage. workers say under the city ordinance its cast members are entitled to higher pay. the current minimum wage in california is $14. nasa setting course for the dark side of the moon. how the exploratory mission will help future-manned missions.

and then fire boards are given the green light to move forward with the annexation plan. the agency will provide fire and emergency services to more than 128,000 residents in eastern contra costa county. that deal needs final approval from the formation commission. that process is expected to take four to six months. we'll be right back.
