>> want to begin with a live look across the bay area. parts of the bay area could see some haze, while others are waking up to fog. of course, we're in for some heat for you today as well. . we are starting out good but we are going to see more smoke coming in today. we're watching our air quality. moderate air quality across the bay area with our measure of particulate matter in the moderate range. a people that are sensitive to that will be wanting to limit time outside. as we start out with our temperatures, look how it warms up in the inland east bay from the 60s to the mid 90s by this afternoon. we'll talk more about this spik

for the weekend. >> we're looking to the north bay. this morning we have this closure which may have just reopened in the last few minutes. i-80 eastbound getting away from the main bay area into the north bay from 780 up to highway 37 there was the closure. your alternate is 29. overnight tonight starting at 10:00 there will be a closure coming in toward the bridge. if you know someone who commutes through the area, let them know there will be that closure and the reroute adding a few minutes. 242 closed but not a full closure. there's the rest of the day. we'll check out santaup. we know booster shots are coming closer to reality.

u.s. will buy half a billion pfizer vaccines and donate them to low income countries. >> unless the rest of the world is vaccinated, it really doesn't matter how much we over vaccinate our population. covid exploits fractures and people that are not vaccinated. businesses big and small feeling the impacts of break-ins and theft in san francisco. the mayor says they are boosting the organized retail theft unit from two officers to six and hiring more retired officers just to walk the streets to help stop a costly cycle. >> we opened poke street february of last year. in that time we've had five successful break-ins. several attempts break-ins and

other property damage to our windows and the door. also in san francisco, an effort to help stop small business owners make it in the way now reportedly under legal fire. the chronicle is reporting san francisco landlords are suing over a back rent dispute following a recently approved ordinance allowing businesses shut down during the pandemic to avoid paying back rent. it's based on a state how allowing agreements to be voided when conditions are impossible to be met. san jose sharks dropped the puck on their new season today missing a key player. training camp gets under way for the start of the season october 12th. evander cane will not be there. he's facing new allegations of sexual assault and physical assault made by his estranged wife. those allegations are part of an

application for a restraining order tied to their divorce. the city of san jose will apologize to the chinese community for how they were treated in the past. the city council will vote on a resolution apologizing for its historical wrongdoing. on may 4th, 1887 someone set fire to san jose's market street china town. the fire happened two months after the city council called china town a public nuisance to the growth of san jose. the vote is on tuesday. to the north bay, where this morning fire crews are on the scene of a brush fire in sonoma county yesterday just off on highway 12. the fire has burned 116 acres, but it is now 80% contained. crews will remain on scene to put out hot spots and keep

flames from spreading. 4:36. we are moving along. air quality still something to talk about every day. >> absolutely. especially when temperatures really start to heat up. we get not only smoke from the fires and high fire danger, but we also get a little bit more ozone in our area as temperatures heat up. as we get a look at our air quality now, a lot of green dots. that means we do still have some good air quality for much of the bay area. i think these early hours will be good for anything you have to do outside before temperatures heat up. 93 in napa, 96 in livermore. definitely warmer today and hot tomorrow before we get a break

this weekend. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. how is driving looking? >> looking good. obviously it's looking dark as well. toward the 101 southbound on ramp at san tomas expressway, the on ramp is open. watch for the activity there. probably not a distraction. no problems for south bay. silicon valley freeway is looking great. there's a little bit of slowing shows up just past the dublin interchange for west 580. brentwood included in that. highway 4 from antioch is moving it speed toward concord. new this morning, one pandemic related san francisco

street closure appears to be inching toward a permanent thing. city leaders are weighing forever closing the bottom half of john f. kennedy drive to traffic in golden gate park. it's been pedestrian and bicycle only below 8th avenue. one option may be to revert back to weekend only closures. coming up here, the spookiest part of halloween this year might be how much money you're going to spend. looks like people will be splurging a little bit more than years past. plus, heads up for u.s. athletes trying to participate in the winter olympics. the new requirement they'll have to meet. and taking a live look outside at the bay bridge toll plaza, moving along. we're going to have much more news, weather and traffic ahead for you.

good thursday morning. as you head out the door in the east bay, we are getting ready for hotter temperatures and you need to be prepares for another taste of summer on this first full day of fall. as you're heading out in concord, our morning shapes out nice in the upper 50s. you can see the trend as highs head toward the 90s today. we'll already be at 77 degrees

at 11:00. where we could see some rain in the distant forecast, coming up in a few minutes. >> 90s, of course. we're officially in fall. in the south bay we see flashing lights on a surface street. here's san mateo bridge, shows a smooth bridge. no flashing lights. you can clearly see those lights on the overpasses. we'll check out the bay bridge coming up. good morning. wall street is set to open higher, extending yesterday's gains. the dow rising about 340 points, snapping a four-day losing street, as did the s&p 500.

both indices posting their best day in three months after the federal reserve signalled it's getting closer to when it will start removing some of the stimulus put in place for the pandemic. an interest rate hike is expected in the next year. the latest report on the number of americans filing for unemployment, plus earnings for apple and costco. apple will pay a bonus to store employees next month. apple will give the full amount to retail marchers hired before march and $500 for employees hired afterwards. bonuses will also be handed out to apple care and online sales staff. happy halloween. the national retail federation says consumers are expected to spend a record $10.1 billion on the holiday this year, up from roughly $8 billion last year

fall. >> it's here. >> it is. fall started yeste12:21. that's the reason why we say first full day of fall. we're going to see some more smoke coming in, still summer like temperatures here as we see hazy skies this afternoon. this is our near surface smoke model forecast. here we are at 3:00 this afternoon still possibly seeing some smoke coming up from that fire burning from around the shellville area from yesterday. napa still expected to be smokey today. as we look at our forecast, it does stay hazy with some moderate air quality. you might want to keep the children from being outside for long periods of time. i think short periods of time are okay, especially since we are seeing some improving air quality at least for this morning. let's go to the south bay. milpitas and cupertino heading toward 90 degrees.

antioch reaching 98 degrees. hayward in the mid 80s. today in oakland looking at some low 70s. we'll see low 70s near the coast and mid 80s in redwood city and palo alto. san francisco reaching the mid 70s downtown. we are seeing some fog. so we are going to see that quickly clearing out, sunshine the rest of the day. our north bay temperatures heating up to the mid 90s. it will cool off. we're going to see a storm system approaching into the pacific northwest. some showers for the far northwestern corner of california, but then that rain looks to fall apart as it moves here. but we're still going to get the cold front. take a look at our temperatures in napa and the north bay. we're going to see some mid 90s today, but that's the hottest temperature we'll see in a while. a nice cooldown for the weekend.

by tuesday into wednesday, highs in the mid to upper 70s. then we'll see some low 80s. it's now feeling like summer, but we will get a taste of fall going into next week as our temperatures go from the 90s to the 80s this weekend and then next week we're looking at 70s in the forecast. san francisco is in the 70s today. we do have a lot of 60s in the forecast as we get much more of that fog rolling in. mike, what are you watching for the morning commute? >> i'm watching this stretch of slow sensor reads away from the bay bridge, from emoriville toward university. a lot of slowing. that usually means they're getting ready to move a crew. we hope that is the case.

world's most dominant covid-19 variant. out of the four variants of concern, delta is by far the most transmissible. the delta variant has countries. a live look in los angeles this morning where covid-19 hospitalizations are falling in the county. this week the number fell below the 1,000 mark for the first time since july. it's on a steady decline, but the number of deaths continue to rise. this week a reported 32 more deaths, bringing a total death toll to more than 25,000. is it really only about four months until the winter olympics? 134 days, actually until the games begin in beijing. all u.s. athletes will have to be fully vaccinated for covid according to a policy announced yesterday by the u.s. olympic committee. those rules take effect december
