welcome to friday morning. it's almost 5:00. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. an air quality advisory has been issued for today and tomorrow. >> let's bring in meteorologist, kari hall. how are things shaping up, kari? >> i think it's mostly going to be the north bay we will have to watch for the air quality. looking at some of the forecast and the numbers for the air quality outlook, it's the same or lower than it was yesterday. we are still going to have drifts of smoke coming in and constantly changing. our temperatures will be hot today. we're headed towards the upper 80s and 90s. the north bay temperatures, 87 today in santa rosa. we'll talk more about cooler air

and our air quality forecast as you make the plans. that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. while you were sleeping, a big development when it comes to covid booster shots. the cdc is endorsing a third pfizer shot for certain people, and that includes everybody 65 and older. cierra johnson joins us live this morning. talk about what they are saying? >> reporter: it's important to know this booster shot is only those that received the initial pfizer shot, so if you received moderna or johnson & johnson, this is not for you. but this goes to the older population, and it includes those working in high-risk areas like teachers and prison workers. everybody 65 is eligible and

those over 18 with underlying health conditions, and 18 and over who have a high risk job are also eligible. the director explained this was being done over the interest of public health. >> it's probably a broader booster than people think, because obesity is something included in that, and that's a body max index over 25. >> and those with underlying conditions were green lighted receive the pfizer booster. mayd the johnson & johnson or moderna, those discussions will

be taking prays in the next coming weeks according to some health experts. >> lots to follow there. thank you. 5:02. could a vaccine mandate come to your child's school? more bay area districts are revising their mandates to all students being vaccinated if they want to be on campus. there are loopholes. first, it likely won't take affect until january, and the board voted for a personal belief exemption. >> i think, yes, he should issue a state-wide mandate, but we need to have a way to provide a quality education to people who are not going to follow the mandate. >> some parents say they want the district to use covid aid

funding. in sonoma county they must submit proof of vaccination or weekly testing according to "the press democrat" as of wednesday. 95% of workers there are fully vaccinated. more than 82% of santa rosa city schools are the same. windsor, 35% of those workers had not responded to the request as of wednesday. we're posting updates 24/7 on how the virus is impacting the communities. taking a live look at capitol hill this morning as congress faces a looming deadline with a potential government shutdown less than one week away. both sides must agree on a stop gap bill by september 30th.

they are calling the move a routine step. nearly one year after the election, president biden's narrow victory in arizona is further confirmed. maricopa county said a determination was just made following a partisan review of am company. the findings actually widened his victory there by 360 votes. a new poll shows who may have the inside track on the mayor's race. the san jose police officers association poll finds santa clara supervisor, cindy chavez has the most favorable rating. three are on the san jose

the 49ers will be taking on the seahawks on sunday shooting for a 3-0 start of the season. how will the air quality be for the fans. kari hall is tracking down the conditions. >> a touchdown forecast? >> yeah, we're looking good, even though we are seeing the smoke moving in. our five-day air quality forecast shows we are going to see a lot of green, and that means good air quality, and a lot of the smoke from the fawn fire will be blowing off to the east. that depends on the fire behavior and the wind direction. looking at the forecast for the game this weekend, we have upper 70s to kick off. it's going to feel nice for the players and fans. we have perfect weather. dipping down to the low 70s by the end of the game. it does look nice for that. mike, how is it looking getting to the game?

. happy friday. it's 5:12 as we take a look at our temperatures ranging from the coast in the 60s to the mid to upper 90s for the inland areas. we'll see a lot of changes in our forecast as our temperatures heat up.

we'll have more on this as well as a look at the rest of our microclimate coming up. at the bridge, there's a problem because these folks are heading towards a big backup, there's a crash on the span blocking multiple lanes. hopefully we will have progress to report. hopefully we will see a turn around in the markets this morning. the markets open up 6:30 our time this morning. it has been a volatile week. costco once again limiting purchases on certain items, and this time it has nothing to do with the pandemic. it's shipping delays and truck driver shortages to blame this time around. there's a two or three week delay in getting it delivered.

>> all right. let's get out and about, no need to play video games this weekend. >> right. it will beice this weekend. looks like temperatures heading down and the smoke clearing out for many of us. we'll still be watching the north bay. school start right now at 50 degrees. we'll see the temperatures go from the low 50s to 60s and then reach into the upper 70s. a kick warm-up again today. will be another warm one. 7-day forecast coming up as we take a look at our near surface smoke forecast. we will have the worst of the air quality here, and up around fairfield as well. we see the light blues elsewhere across the area, and that's a hazy sky and that's when we will see some of the smoke coming from the fawn fire that exploded in the past couple of days due to unfavorable weather

conditions. more of the smoke pushing off towards the north. if you head up around lake shasta, it will be smoky this weekend. looking at our temperatures for us today, 84 in milpitas, and morgan hill is more like 92 degrees this afternoon. this is a couple degrees lower compared to yesterday. oakland reaching 76 degrees. 86 in fremont. a high of 81 expected in redwood city today. cool near the coast at san francisco keeping the coastal temperatures more sunshine downtown and 72 degrees. our north bay temperatures reaching the low 80s in mill valley to 90s in ukiah and 60s in bodega bay. we will see a storm system moving in. although it doesn't look like the bay area will have a chance

of rain, we will all get a cooldown and that's going to increase the potential we could see potential on the fawn fire to the north. temperature wise this weekend, it's going to be so much more comfortable after a couple really hot days in the valleys. we're headed towards the low 80s, and upper 70s next week. going to feel like fall with san francisco temperatures going into the mid-60s for the weekend, as we see more clouds and fog rolling in. mike, you are tracking breaking news. is that still going on? >> reports of the crash on at the treasure island onramp but it's in the tunnel. two of the five lanes are blocked. anything going on in the tunnel will enhance the backup forming at the incline. folks may be heading up towards the richmond bridge if they are choosing between the two bridges heading to berkeley.

indictment against him. in utah, they are launching an investigation into the police stopping the pair. somebody claims in the 911 call they saw a man slapping a woman. the police department is launch an investigation following an outside source. and then according to black and missing foundation, last year nearly 40% of the more than half a million americans reported missing were people of color. many wonder why those cases don't get much attention. >> indigenous woman go missing and rarely does it capture the

attention of the gabby petito case. >> the "today" show is going to address other missing people coming up. chris chmura has two recent cases where durability falls short. >> good morning. let's start with genevieve, she heard loud noises coming from her new washing machine. the store sent a technician and he said to stop using it, and she wanted a replacement, and all the while her family was using a laundromat even though they had a new washer, and the store delivered a new washer after we got involved in days. that's appearvalue.

and then melissa in san mateo, her new fridge was not cooling or freezing. she asked the manufacturer to swap it, and the answer was no so she called us and we got involved, and a week later melissa got a new fridge and gift cards to cover the cost of the spoiled goods. have a great weekend. >> you too, chris. a new project in berkeley may help more college students make it in the bay. city leaders are look into building a 17-story apartment right across from the entrance to the uc berkeley campus. it will have more than 280 units for students and over a dozen low income units.

on seattle seahawks on sunday. we'll have more on that coming up. should be fun. >> thank you for joining us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we want to get to meteorologist, kari hall, because we are waking up to a air quality due to the smoke from the wildfires. how are the conditions for us? >> we are going to start to see smoke coming in from the fawn fire further to the north around redding and that's going to be pushing in. as we look at the forecast, moderate air quality today and this is when you want to make sure that many of our microclimates are spending time outside, but a measure of the particulate matter shows people sensitive to the smoke, it could be unhealthy. we look at our temperatures heading back up into the low 80s and 90s inland, and 60s and 70s near the coast. we'll talk more about the forecast coming up in a few minutes.

>> we'll check back to you. new overnight, cork-run avenue, a man was shot and killed. it's not clear if they know what led up to this shooting. as the california summer delta surge is slowing down, we're looking at how the vaccination case and rates appear here in the bay area. we break down the analysis done by a bay area news group. it shows that the 14-day average of cases compared with the percentage in each county with at least one shot. the bay area, there's not a single county with a case rate of at least 20 per 10,000 residents during the last 14 days. the highest are in napa and solano county with 19, and 64% of each county's resident has gotten at least one vaccine shot. people opposed of vaccine

mandates will take to the streets later today. today in the bay's bob redell is joining us live from walnut creek. this is one of the sites of the planned protests, bob. >> reporter: yes, that scheduled for later tonight at the city council behind me. they want to get the message of stop the vaccine mandates, we do not comply. in front of city hall, they are showing support for first responders refusing to get the vaccine. dave gutierrez, he resigned because of the mandate.

gutierrez said he was willing to provide a weekly negative covid test. >> to me it's my faith, my belief in what -- i know my body and what i want to put into it. my choice is not to be vaccinated. >> we are currently working with the police unions and we are taking into account some of their proposals. the reason we are doing this is to keep our workforce safe. >> up north in sonoma county, that county is giving its first responders the option of get vaccinated or submit to weekly testing. all of the first responders, firefighters and law enforcement and officers, they must start submitting to the weekly tests starting today. reporting live here in walnut creek, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> thank you. the trial of disgraced their

yos ceo holmes gets back under way today. jurors got a look at 12,000 text messages entered into evidence, and they reveal intimacy between holmes and the theranos partner. one time james mattis testified holmes was in charge of the doomed company. we are following the latest on-air and online. check it out at nbcbayarea.com. a hero will be laid to rest in the east bay. the funeral for crossing guard, ashley diaz, expected to get under way in lafayette. he was killed earlier this month when a suv struck him near stanley middle school.

he pushed another child from the direct path of the vehicle before impact. the school held a remembrance ceremony f earlier this week. ash. six children were inside the vehicle at the time. we should warn you the video you are about to see is graphic. that crash happened earlier this month at international avenue and 38th. this is in east oakland. that impact so great, two children were thrown from the van. a good samaritan stopped the suspected drunk driver who is now facing drunk driving charges. there will be a car wash to raise d to help with the medical bills. there has been 20 incidents in the last six months all along

the highway 87 corridor. they believe somebody is shooting or using a sling shot to fireball bearings. the most recent victim was a woman driving in her car. the windows were shot out but she was not injured. >> we don't know why they are choosing the places they are choosing, but we do know it's getting worse and we want it to stop. >> the rampage caused more than half a million in damage so far, and a reward is being offered to help find the person doing it before it gets worse. in shasta county, the fawn fire continues to burn. they found a palo alto woman in distress is suspected of starting the fire. thousands are still under evacuation orders. that fire has grown to 5,500

acres with 5% containment. mike, i know those flames have threatened 25,000 structures. >> yeah, we do have a will upda soon. >> we will give you a chance to do that as we look at the forecast right now. a round of relief coming our way? how are we looking for this weekend? >> it's going to be a nice weekend for much of the bay area. let's kick it off tonight at the oakland a's game. temperatures will be in the upper 60s at first pitch, so make sure you have a jacket. you may have to deal with unhealthy air quality as times, so maybe keeping the mask on at all times would be a good idea. we have the dilli haat fruit

festival, and hope i said that right. going for a hike in muir woods, we will see temperatures in the low 60s throughout the weekend starting out with fog in the morning and then some peeks of sunshine. much warmer temperatures if you plan to go to paso robles this weekend, reach into the 90s today. mid-80s for the rest of the weekend there as we continue on with nice weather. if your weekend plans take you down the great highway and maybe stopping at big sur, it will be so nice with sunshine. temperatures in the mid to low 70s throughout the weekend, and that's what we will see for many of the coasts and beaches. looking at temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s. we will be watching other events going on. we'll talk about the 49ers game in that forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, what news are you following? >> better news for one of the cases, but not what is behind me. i will put my phone away with

morning in the east bay. we're checking out pleasant hill. you're stepping out the door to mild weather in the 60s right now. we'll see clouds moving by for the start of the day and then warming up quickly. it's going to be a warm afternoon. we will talk about all of our microclimates coming up. and then stopping and holding here at the bay bridge. the crash still blocking lanes at treasure island. we'll talk about what your alternates are and the forecast and the latest coming from chp coming up. and then investigations into the january 6th attack. the congressional committee conducting the investigation now wants to hear from some of the people closest to former president trump. this is a new twist in the investigation, chris. >> yeah, that's right, laura. a bit unexpected.

good morning to you. take a live look at the capitol building behind me with the sun shining on it today. the congressional committee issued subpoenaed for some of president trump's top advisers, and among them bannon, and mike meadows and dan scavino, and cash scavino. they are warranting sworn depositions in mid october, and in a lengthy statement the former president says in part he would fight the subpoenas by invoking his executive privilege, and that's to set off the legal battle of the use of executive privilege after a president leaves office. biden said he is likely to comply with the committee's

demands on the white house for its information that it has. >> so interesting to follow. thanks for the latest. california's additional sick leave offered during the pandemic, laura? >> yeah, this is interesting. the law applies to businesses with more than 25 employees and provided up to 80 hours of additional leave in order to quarantine if you had vaccine side effects as well. many workers say it's too soon, the state business lobby says it's about time many business employers can't afford the leave without a federal tax credit. the law expires on september 30th. additional stimulus is on the way for some californians. people that make up to $75,000 can receive a one-time $600 payment. you must have your 2020 taxes

filed by october 15th of this year, and if you were claimed a dependent in 2020 by somebody, you will not be eligible. the checks will go out on october 5th with a new round of recipients continuing every two to three weeks. and it's game on at levi on sunday night. the niners are looking for their third straight win to start the season. >> today in the bay's kris sanchez outside levi stadium. this is the first time fans will be able to see a game in person in such a long time. >> reporter: let me tell you what feels good. it feels good to be here at levi stadium talking about football and not talking about a mass vaccination site, and it's the mass vaccinations that made it possible for fans to be back in the stands. the niners will take on the packers on sunday night, and sunday night is football night

in america. as our morning sports expert, our assignment editor reminded us, it was back when the championship was on the line and we know the niners went on to the super bowl that year. last season was riddled with too many injuries and losses, and it's a good thing maybe that fans were not allowed to watch in person. this season, the niners began the season with two wins against the detroit lions and the philadelphia eagles. there are tickets available for the packers game on sunday but if you want to claim the best seat in the house, watch it on nbc bay area with a pot of food. that's what we do at our house.

>> we just invited our friends over. why don't you answer the door? >> yeah. >> thanks, kris. let's talk about that weather for the game, though. people are going to be out there having a good time. >> or if you are out there in the parking lot before the game, tailgating and cooking up stuff, it's going to be nice. let's talk about air quality because that's been a big concern. we will have moderate air quality, and we will clear out for the weekend and temperature wise, i don't know if it gets better than this. 70s at the kickoff and low 70s by the end of the game. it's going to be pretty nice and still pretty warm today. let's get a look aesor the sout. upper 80s. not as warm go into the weekend but this is the last day of temperatures like this. you can probably already see the difference in the 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen.

low 90s continue today for antioch as well as livermore, pleasanton and walnut creek. 66 in half moon bay. redwood city reaching 81 degrees. san francisco in the upper 60s. engel side in the 70s to downtown. clearlake today headed towards 94 degrees. we are watching the north bay for some of the smoke moving in and with all the fires we have had, developing up around redding especially, we will hope to get a slight chance of rain between monday and tuesday, but we will all get a cooldown. temperatures in morgan hill going from the 90s to 80s over the weekend. and then next week seeing 70s for a day or two and then going back over the next several days.

a nice weekend ahead with some mid-80s, low 80s by sunday and then upper 70s early next week. for san francisco, going to be in the low 70s today and then much more of our typical weather for this time of year, some 60s as the fog stays a little bit longer, especially over the bay. we're watching all of that. mike, you are watching breaking news. >> yeah, this is bad news for your friday commute. this is why it's different. hov lanes, they are blocked, too. all lanes slow getting towards the metering lights. hov and the carpool lanes, no benefit on the span of the bay bridge. half of your freeway is blocked. a big distraction for all of these folks. coming off of the maze, a little slow for west 580 as well. that's rippling out where we don't usually have that much

way towards a small spanish village in the canary islands. the lava temperature exceeding 1,800 degrees farenheit. when it meets the sea that water can cause explosions and trigger landslides and create toxic gas. a kroger's walmart had a shooter. officers cleared that store and found frightened employees and customers hiding. i'm from memphis, and one of my mother's church members works at that grocery store, and she was able to speak to her husband and not the woman, and she's okay. but still a frightening moment.
