>> i am marcus washington. covid vaccines is something we will talk about in bit, but first we want to talk about the forecast with kari hall. >> this is looking at oracle park, and can you see the raindrops there. mist and drizzle to start out in san francisco. even some light showers possible, especially near the coast but the cold front will bring in a better chance of rain for today will be moving in later this evening. off and on showers, but it didn't look like all of that will see that, and we will all get the cooldown. we will look at temperatures head into the 70s, and we will watch the radar very closely. looking at temperatures today, mainly 60s and 70s, and i'll have more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. covid vaccine booster shots rolling out, and more bay area

events are back in business. >> yeah, chris pallone has the newest booster shot timeline. good morning, chris. >> president biden says he will get his covid-19 vaccine booster shot, this as the battle over mandatory vaccines in the workplace starts to head to court. over the weekend, people newly eligible are encouraged to get a booster while still trying to convince those that have not been vaccinated at all to roll up their sleeves. they are approving boosters from moderna and johnson & johnson as well. >> with the goal of making booster recommendations from moderna and j&j recipients in the coming weeks, this is a high, high priority. >> meanwhile, battles over

vaccine mandates are brewing in the courts, and in new york city a judge put on hold an order that would force 150,000 employees to have their first vaccine shot by today. back here in washington, as we said, president biden remarked yesterday he would be getting his covid booster shot and said he would do it publicly so the public could see it. the president got his second pfizer shot more than eight months ago back in january. >> there's good news on the covid front, chris? >> there is. we watch the numbers day in and day out and it turns out over the past two weeks the amount of new infections registered in the u.s. and the number of hospitalizations have both declined by double digits. unfortunately, the number of deaths are up double digits as well, and that's a lagging indicator. hopefully that number will also

start to go down soon. >> a welcomed change. thank you, chris. more covid details now. a vaccine for children between 5 and 11 appears to be getting closer. pfizer recently released data showing the vaccine is safe and effective in children but not has been peer reviewed. a dose given to children would be one-third of the adult dosage. when it comes to the return of the convention crowd, the largest bay area conference yet begins on the peninsula. >> cierra johnson is live for us, and this is a software conference with really specific safety rules, i understand? >> reporter: good morning. yeah, that's right. you can seat blue glow behind me with the light, and the event kicks off today and the conference is welcoming as many as 5,000 attendees.

as you can imagine with that many people gathering in one spot, health and safety top of mind for organizers here. you need to submit proof of a covid vaccination and proof of a negative covid rapid test or submit to a covid test here in the parking lot to be granted admission. now, once attendees show that proof of vaccination and complete the testing, organizers say the sessions will take place outdoors in festival style for a extra level of precaution. salesforce closed off the street

of the home right now with a chainsaw. we will continue to follow this and try and bring you more information when we get it. 5:06. a live look in washington this morning. this is where it's shaping up to be a big week for lawmakers working to pass president biden's infrastructure bill. the senate passed the measure and originally a vote was set to take place today but that is being held for debate. house speaker nancy pelosi is working to build a consensus on the $5 trillion appropriations bill. the government shutdown could kick in on thursday. and then the niners game, there's plenty to talk about. >> yeah, some may call it a woulda, coulda, shoulda. >> it was great.

things are shaping up. >> we are seeing improvements in our air quality. cooler temperatures coming in and it's thanks to the cold front that we can see the rain out ahead of as it approaching redding. this is looking much better today and hopefully we will get more containment. and then looking good elsewhere for some extra long time outside as we are seeing the temperatures cool off as well. as better air quality, mainly 60s and 70s across the bay area. we will heat up and talk more about what is ahead throughout the week, and that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, you have a crash in richmond? >> yeah, chp did not have many details to report. sounds like a couple lanes are blocked. could be two lanes on one side and one lane on the other side.

pablo and richmond. hopefully we will have more progress to report in the next report coming up. taking a look at business and tech this morning, the futures falling hard after worries of the debt crisis and the federal reserve rolling back stimulus as well. wall street is set to open higher following a wild week of trading. new this morning, facebook responding to reports calling instagram harmful for teenage girls in a new post facebook's head of research says the journal misrepresented the company's internal data by hiding one finding about body image. coming up, craig melvin speaking to the head of

instagram about that report. this morning a growing crisis at a major container port on both coasts of the united warehouses, shipping delays are running rampant for businesses large and small. >> yeah, it's creating a logjam. >> reporter: good morning. we are seeing this on main street here, on the east coast, and chances you are seeing it on your main streets on the west coast as well. the problem is we have too many ships sitting out at sea. look at the west coast of los angeles. 60 ships waiting to get in. same thing on the east coast getting into new york city. the supply chain stretched dramatically. warehouses and trucks as well as the ports themselves completely stretched, and the supply chain is stretched. >> this year there just is not

inventory. >> costco is already talking about limiting certain items, including toilet paper and cleaner, for example, and bottled water. it may mean going into the christmas holidays where you may have a hard time finding certain items. artificial christmas trees are becoming hard to find, and big popular items for the holidays, tvs and video games could be hard to come by. we'll go in depth on this coming up on "today." going back to hawkins. >> yeah, netflix looking at a season 4 of "stranger things." >> good morning, children.

that will give us mist and drizzle. we will go into the evening with the inland areas seeing light rain later this evening. the temperatures are going to be so comfortable. upper 60s for hayward and oakland. reaching 75 in concord. 68 in napa as well as san rafael. san francisco, 66 degrees. 70 today in palo alto. you probably have seen at the bottom of the screen the 7-day forecast. and then the rest of the week is dry, and it's also going to be heating up. we'll return to summer with a lack of cold fronts moving our way. ukiah, low 70s today and then a little rain and go into the rest of the forecast by the end of the week, we are back to summer with mid-90s here. a lot of the inland areas heading towards the mid-70s.

today and tomorrow is going to be the best days of the week for the outdoor activities for the valleys. mid-80s as we warm up into friday. mike, you have breaking news out of richmond. >> yeah, kari, it's that crash we are talking about over here in the upper east shore freeway. the bulk of our commuters, we're looking at a smooth drive. it's getting away from the bay bridge, eastbound 80. but, look, there's a distraction on both directions, because of the crash involves a flipped orr over, and that's a distraction as you go through san pablo and out of richmond, and three lanes should be open but there's a crash and it could take time to clear. the rest of the bay is clear but it's taking time to start to build, and that's right on schedule. back to you. >> thank next here, nbc bay are

moving through. later on for parts of the peninsula and the south and east bays, and we are watching this as there are more changes for the rest of the week. mike, you have breaking news, a very serious crash in richmond. >> yeah, just updated. chp tells us this is a deadly crash, eastbound 80. two lanes blocked. an investigation has to happen here and it will take more time for the corner to arrive on scene. this is affecting eastbound 80 at about elpoor tal, and that's where the crash is located, and those two left lanes are up on the center divide center, which you know. and the commute that builds will be distracted. back to you. >> thank you. breaking news we are following in the south bay this morning, taking a live look in cupertino where you see crews responding to a two-alarm house

fire. this is in the 1000 block of tuscany place. the neighbor is not too far from highway 85. now, there are reports that there was somebody inside of the house that may have been trapped when that fire broke out but we see multiple fire crews on the scene. as we have been monitoring this fire, we see it flaring up there. we don't know how the fire broke out, and we hope nobody is injured as well. the state's eviction moratorium expires on thursday. bob redell is live for us in san ramon. tenants and landlords could still apply for financial help? >> reporter: yeah, even though the eviction moratorium expires on thursday, and anytime after

that landlords could start to evict people who are behind on their rent, and the state has rent relief for landlords that have not been paid during the pandemic and for those tenants behind on rent. there will be a news conference to explain how tenants can apply for relief to avoid eviction. as many as 92,000 californians could receive eviction notices after the moratorium expires. raul peralez, city council member, said several thousand residents have tapped into that assistance program, and tomorrow he will propose a measure to guarantee a legal right to assistance to help them navigate possible eviction. >> many don't have the money to get legal support and help them through an eviction.

>> the federal government has given the state of california $5.2 billion for rent relief so far, just about $1 billion has been dispersed. still a lot left. this is not just for tenants behind on rent due to covid, but for landlords that have not gotten paid during the pandemic. this will continue after the moratorium. you can apply online by searching for covid-19 rent relief. >> if you did not remember that address, we have that information online if you need help with rent relief, the latest on nbcbayarea.com. more than 9 out of 10 workers are fully vaccinated ahead of the deadline for them to be vaccinated. >> under 8% were at least

is jose. police are asking if you have information, you are asked to call 911 if you see him. new overnight, the chp investigating a deadly accident on 680 on the marina vista exit in martinez. the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers after hitting a pedestrian. and then greg knapp died in july as he was struck by a car as he drove his bike. police said the driver was not impaired. there were no charged confirmed. and then the so-called fast

trip system literally cuts power automatically when sensors detect breached power lines in remote areas. it's leading to a wave of outages in some areas, not to mention spoiled food and lost cell phone service. pg&e says it recognizes the hardship that is causing customers and improvements are still being made to the system. shasta officials making progress on the fawn fire. thousands have remained displaced. at least 40 homes and buildings destroyed, but the fire is now 45% contained. the scientists from palo alto has pleaded not guilty to starting the fire. it's 5:38 for you this morning. one thing we have been talking about when it comes to weather, as we look out in san jose, it's the possibility of rain in some parts. i did not see it in san jose but did see it in some northern

parts. >> yeah, already misting and drizzling in san jose, and you have the windshield wipers going across the golden gate bridge, and the roads could be slick. as far as air quality, we are looking at improvements here as well. the forecast for our air quality is looking good, and it's go into the moderate range from good which is what we will see near the coast today. it's going to be much cooler. take a look at the highs for today reaching mostly in the 60s and 70s. antioch reaching 76 degrees. 74 in morgan hill. 68 today in san rafael. we'll talk more about what is ahead coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are giving us an update in some news. >> yeah, somebody has died in the crash on east 880. there's a distraction from the

flashing lights and crash activity. you could exit over here eastbound and get off of the freeway at san pablo avenue and that will take a while because those are major surface streets. keep in mind, you may want to stay on the freeway. that's being very pragmatic, and of course our concern is over the life lost there and we will follow that as well. highway 4 -- there you go, a little slowing starts up go into concord approaching 242. a new incident in the city could affect folks getting off of the bay bridge in westbound 80. here at 101, a little slowing. everything on the map here is traditional. we'll look at the richmond crash when we come back. >> thank you. hundreds of mourners saying good-bye to gabby petito.

good monday morning. it's 5:43. let's get you out the door in the east bay and our forecast for oakland is starting out, cloudy, misty and drizzling, and we will see temperatures slowly warming up. in fact it does not get too warm today. this will be one of the coolest days of the week as we watch out

for a chance of affecting both directions of the east shore freeway. more on that coming up. we continue to follow the breaking news in the south bay this morning. live pictures from cupertino, where we learned a few minutes ago, it has turned deadly. one person was killed, and two others were rescued and this happened in the 1000 block tuscany. we will continue to follow the story. crews have been on the roof trying to vent out areas. we saw the flames leaping from the attic area, and sadly enough it has turned deadly.

and then one person injured after a shooting in east oakland. so far no arrests have been made. police are investigating a double deadly shooting over the weekend, and last night residents gathered for a prayer vigil. an event happens like this in monthly locations, and something needs to be done. >> we have to invoke the presence of god in this city, and what we are looking at is people killing people, and shooting up people, and i have been here 75 years and never seen the city in the shape its in right now. >> oakland now has seen 102 homicides this year. the city has seen a surge in other violent crimes. 5:45, and developing now. an investigation is under way in montana. this is after a deadly train derailment. >> many killed and others injured. >> behind me the ntsb on scene

here, and they have heavy machinery trying to sift through the wreckage. more than 40 injured and five remain hospitalized, and three killed. the train was headed from chicago to the pacific northwest when it derailed for unknown reasons. here's one one passenger had to say. >> i am not doing great, but others have it worse so that's where the focus should be. >> the investigators will find out how fast the train was going and if the brakes were applied during or after the derailment. more on the "today" show. back to you. and then authorities in florida trying to continue the search for brian laundrie. >> gabby is the most amazing

person i ever met. so if you are going to leave here today, i'm asking that you guys be inspired by the way she treated people. >> investigators say gabby died on the road trip with her fiancé, brian laundrie who has not been seen in more than a week. they are returning to his home. agents took personal items belonging to laundrie. there was a warrant out for his arrest for credit card fraud but not currently a suspect in the killing of petito. after gabby went missing, laundrie refused to talk to police. deliberations of the

that's going to bring relief not only from the smoke as well as warm temperatures go into today. now it does look like the coast stays misty and drizzly today, and then as far as more measurable rain, we are seeing that further to the north closer to ukiah, and then we will see it move into santa rosa and san rafael and up around napa as well by about 5:00 today, and then along the peninsula there could be a hit or miss shower as we go into today, and then tonight we will see if it will hold on long enough to make it into the south bay and east bay. we could see a little rain here and there. look at the highs for today, reaching the upper 60s and low 70s, and only up to 75 degrees in concord today while oakland in the upper 60s. low 60s near the coast. for san francisco, reach into the mid-60s this afternoon. for the north bay, of 66 in

santa rosa. we look at some of our warmest spots, and even though we have a nice fall-like feel to the week, once this system moves out and we are looking at clearing conditions high pressure builds once again and then the temperatures will jump back up to the 90s. here's a look at the 7-day forecast. overall, a cool start to the week with mid-70s. and then mid-80s by friday. it looks like that will be the warmest day in the forecast. still pretty summer-like for the weekend, while san francisco will see the drizzle today, and upper 60s tomorrow and low to mid-70s for the end of the week. mike, you are following breaking news in the east bay. >> that's right, a traffic alert because of a deadly crash eastbound 80 at san portal.

they have removed an suv involved, and we do know somebody died as a result of the crash. it will take a while for the investigation. it will slow down some folks. the backup on the bay bridge forming in the last few minutes. better news at least get into san francisco. fremont street, the exit, just past the exit, three or four vehicles are on the left shoulder and that will be a distraction but no lanes blocked. this crash here in richmond affects eastbound with the two lanes blocked heading up towards the north bay where highway 37 slowing is typical. and walnut creek, no problems. the rest of the contra costa county looks fine and on pattern. same thing south of there, sanly andros, the build is on for this

bay." germany voted in a new chancellor, and this is signaling a new change there. preliminary results show the margin had less than 2% points. merkel is stepping down after 16 years, and the election of the left-leaning schultz signals a shake-up. a new government to form could take weeks if not months. a woman and her 2-year-old son fell from a third-story balcony at petco park. it happened saturday before the start of the padres and braves' game. both were pronounced dead at the scene. police say the deaths are suspicious with the homicide unit called in. >> it's far too early for us to have any information as to

whether or not this is intentional or accidental. >> police are not yet releasing the names of the woman and child. the padres issued a statement saying in part, we are deeply saddened by the loss of life at petco park and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of those involved. and then nassau county deputy died from injuries yesterday. the suspect is a 35-year-old former marine from jacksonville who has not been captured and should be considered armed and dangerous. the deputy was 29 years old. a recent shooting of children at a bus stop is getting attention from the parkland shooting. >> gun violence is the leading cause for not only black youth but youth across the board. the leading cause of death. that's completely unacceptable
