hour, and relatively low humidity and it will continue through tomorrow with breezy winds. for the most part we are going to see gusty winds continue, and i will have a look at the forecast coming up in a few minutes. 5:01 right now. police investigating a deadly crash in san jose. one of two cars involved flipped over. a person was killed, three more are critically injured. it happened at kau rare yo court in san jose, close to clark elementary school. overnight police closed that area. we have a crew headed to the scene to get the latest on the information. things are suddenly looking up in san francisco when it comes to the pandemic, and more and more people believe masks should be coming down. cierra johnson is live, and with the fewer cases what do the experts say about the mask mandate?

>> reporter: good morning, marcus. they are saying we are headed in the right direction. as you mentioned, there are fewer cases that more folks getting vaccinated and that's the perfect storm to consider reducing those mask mandates. according to "the chronicle," san francisco's director of health said discussions are ongoing to figure out, quote, where there may be flexibility, and the article says dr. colfax says he sees a downward trend in hospitalizations and where does the state stand in the transmission rates. california is the leader with the lowest rate of transmission. it's substantial while other states are in the high category. in terms of rate of transmission, the state was at

7% a week ago, and now at 3%. san francisco's rate of transmission is at 2.3%. transmission rates under 5% is the cdc's threshold to loosen the mask mandates. right now it's a waiting game, but the experts believe we are heading in the right direction. live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:03. city workers in san jose facing a vaccination deadline. starting tomorrow they must show proof of vaccination or risk losing their job.

aquarium, groping somebody, pulling her hair and then threatening to come back and shoot everybody. he was arrested and now he is on leave. police became aware of what they called a nonspecific threat of armed violence. it was posted on social media. while the threat was quickly deleted, the school went remote for the day. police eventually detained somebody for questioning. developing right now, did race prompt somebody to vandalize two cars belonging to a south bay man. >> surveillance shows what begins as a conversation, and lee says a man stopped and asked about his unusual bike. when he told him to look up the information online, the man started to zero in on his race.

the sell of flavored tobacco products. city council made the decision in the unanimous vote yesterday. in recent years vaping among teens skyrocketed, along with health problems related to vaping. leaders in san jose says many people are putting orange cones in front of their homes to save a spot on the street because strangers from other areas are parking there, sometimes for days. homeowners end up having to park blocks away or on their lawn. a san jose planning commissioner is bringing is asking for a program that allows us the opportunity to park in front of our home, and not have to wake up every morning to put cones

out there. >> the city council could take up the issue for the east side next week. as we take a live look at the golden gate bridge, a beautiful shot this morning. look, it's always nice that we can see the golden gate bridge. that means the fog is so think out there in the morning sometimes. we can actually see the bridge, and sometimes it means it will be warmer there. >> we are looking at a wind clearing everything out right now, and that's going to increase our fire danger today and keep most of the bay area cool so make sure the onshore wind will keep the winds high as well as increase the fire danger. tomorrow is when we start to heat up. this weekend it will feel like summer out there. we are starting out this morning in the east bay, pleasant hill walking out the door to temperatures in the low 50s. we'll see a few clouds out there as temperatures reach the low 70s by noon. here's a look at the

a bigger look at the commute coming up. united airlines tells us it's ready to dismiss hundreds of employees who refused to get vaccinated and could do so at anytime. the deadline for employees was the day before yesterday but the airline says it will allow people to stay if they get their first dose before their termination meeting. as many as 600 employees could be affected. united tells us another 2,000 or so employees have applied for religious or medical exceptions. they will be placed on unpaid leave for as much as six months and they will make a decision after that. united is one of the largest employers in san mateo county. janet yellen was on capitol hill yesterday, saying the u.s. economy will face a crisis if they do not raise the ceiling.

wall street got whacked tuesday. tech stocks in particular sending the nasdaq down almost 3%. part of of this is yields on government debt and it's the same debt we said was in danger of default. house prices continue to rise. if you group together the nation's largest 20 largest markets, up 20% from last year. we report on a lot of different housing prices, and july is the last month measured. not the highest. phoenix, san diego, phoenix up one-third, and these are records. this is the latest offering from

>> until then, we will get a look at the forecast for you. kari, how is it looking for us today? >> looks good, whenever you are taking a road trip, and when the leaves start to change i will give you a forecast for great foliage and great spots to head, so keep tuned for that. we have fresh air to breathe as we have a strong westerly wind kicking up, and we have some systems passing by and not bringing rain but the clouds are interesting with the clouds dotting the sky, and we are going to get a look at oakland, as you are heading out the door, that morning commute or heading to the station, it's going to be in the low 50s and then rise into the 60s by late morning. a mix of sun and clouds. for the south bay, heading towards 78 degrees in downtown san jose. these temperatures are a few degrees warmer compared to yesterday and we will start to feel itasbay

with antiocheaing 75 degrees, and low 60s for daly city. we will reach into the low 70s in san mateo. san francisco, upper 60s. a lot more of the sunshine again today. novato reaching 83 degrees and 82 today in santa rosa. here's what is going on. we are seeing high pressure build across the region and that's going to heat up our temperatures and keep any chances of more clouds moving in as we go into the weekend. then as that fades, by early next week we will see the storm system, this long line of showers approaching from the north. it doesn't look like we will get rain, but we will definitely get a cooldown. let's check out gilroy. today we are up to about 80 degrees, and then we will see upper 80s into the start of the weekend. really hot on sunday and monday, and then take a look at the dip in temperatures by the middle of next week. we are go from 92 to 79 on

tuesday, and then continuing to cool off going towards the end of next week. our 7-day forecast shows still the hot and cold temperatures rolling in. we will be hot for the weekend, and then the morning temperatures in the upper 50s. highs in the low 80s by next tuesday. while san francisco will see more sunshine and highs reaching up to about 71 on saturday. mike, you have been watching the roads, anything new popping up? >> we have the commute starting to build and no backup at the toll plaza. a few more cars coming through when we look at the camera over here. highway 37, no slowing out of vallejo. and we have the overnight crew north 242, and they should be getting ready to clear in the next 15 to 20 minutes, and clearing usually around 5:30 but scheduled until 6:00 a.m. and the south bay has the disabled vehicle or perhaps a

let's start with meteorologist, kari hall with a look at the forecast. >> we have a lot of changes coming our way, and we are starting out with gusting winds and a north bay high fire danger today, and then this weekend will start like summer. to the north bay, the areas shaded in orange includes the interior mountains and elevations above 1,000 feet. we could see the wind gusts kicking up to 35 miles per hour and the humidity as low as 8%, and that means if a spark spreads a fire it could spread very rapidly because of the conditions. we're going to be watching that today. at least for now our temperatures stay comfortable, so we'll talk about all the changes ahead. that's in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. new overnight, police are investigating the deadly crash in san jose. i want to give alive look at the scene this morning. this is where officers have now wrapped up this part of the investigation. i want to show you video from last night. you can see right here, one of

many bay area school districts are making vaccines mandatory? >> yeah, that's the talk in a lot of different communities, but only children 12 and up will be subject to a vaccine mandate because the vaccine for younger children is not approved yet. that could change, because as you know this time yesterday pfizer submitted its data for children 5 to 11 to the fda for emergency use authorization. it shows the smaller dose for the smaller bodies reduces a robust immune response similar to adults with full doses. 8% more children tested positive for covid since the tkpweuping beginning of the pandemic. that's according to the american academy of pediatrics. the authorization may not come until late october.

metering lights turned on, and i will check the lines coming up. the governor of texas facing new scrutiny for the recent get tough tactics along the border. abbott is using state troopers and national guards to arrest undocumented immigrants. this week more than 200 people jailed in the operation are being released after weeks of detainment and no charges ever filed. attorneys and immigrant rights groups called the arrests unconstitutional. the president has canceled today's trip to chicago so he can stay closer to congress. >> scott mcgrew joining us now, and so much going on on capitol hill and it's reaching a boiling point. >> yeah, there's a lot boiling in that stew. let's start with paying our

debt. republicans have once again blocked a move to raise the debt ceiling. if we don't raise it america will not be able to pay off its deaths. we never defaulted before. secretary janet yellen said the default would cause catastrophic measures to the economy if we default. keep in mind the debt ceiling goes backward the way your credit card bill does, it covers things we already spent money on, including money we spent during the trump administration, money both parties agreed to spend at the time. money we promised to pay back, red and blue. >> if republicans want to vote to not pay the debts they helped incur, they can all vote no. we are just asking republicans to get out of the way. get out of the way when you are

risking the full-facing credit of the united states to play a nasty political game. >> senate minority leader, mitch mcconnell, has been the lead blocker on the debtissue, and ot noting kevin mccarthy on the right once full supported it, and when the united states makes promises it keeps them which is why the house voted today to avoid the threat of a debt default, an old tweet. there are two spending bills, $1 trillion infrastructure bill, and everybody likes this one, and then the more than $3 trillion spending bill no republican likes, and even some democrats are against. this one could get passed in a heartbeat, so pressure is on nancy pelosi to pass this one now and worry about that one now. they are calling that move

two-day timeframe, and items traveling from one zone to another could take an extra two days on top of the normal delivery time. starting sunday the postal service will temporarily increase the prices on package deliveries through the end of christmas, so it could be an extra 75 cents to $5 for items. and then the logjam of container ships on the east coast and west coast, and there's two reasons for the logjam. there's a record demand for goods into the united states which increased ship traffic. secondly, there's a shortage of truck drivers and warehouse space to move and store the goods. >> if i am a local farmer trying to get a truck driver to drive my shipment of tomatoes to the market, i might suddenly find my favorite trucking company doesn't have enough truck companies because there are

lucrative jobs that consumer electronics companies are paying a premium for the same service. it's a matter of who has the deeper pockets that is able to buy up all of the available talented and skilled drivers being one of them. >> locally the port of oakland said it handled fewerships last month compared to a year ago, because many ships diverted to avoid the logjam, and then inport cargo was more here. because flu season is coming, some people getting a second shot along with the covid booster shots, and experts pointing out it's not bad

mid-80s for much of the north bay. we are watching the north bay for the fire danger and it's going to heat up so it's likely we will continue to see a high risk of the fire go into the next few days. by next week, a cold front will be moving in and that will give us relief finally. let's check out concord. highs reaching into the low to mid-90s this weekend, but then look at the dip in the temperatures by friday, and we may only see highs in the low 70s. we just need to be holding on a little longer with the air-conditioning blasting, and then san francisco is going to have a pleasant weekend. a lot of sunshine and temperatures reaching into the low 70s. another update in the forecast coming up in a few minutes, marcus and laura. >> thanks, kari. happening now marin schools seeing fewer students in the
