>> there's a few things i am watching today from the high fire danger and the north bay to the hot temperatures, and the weekend is going to feel summer like. as we zoom into the north bay we are under the fire weather watch that starts at 11:00 and goes until 6:00 tomorrow evening for our north bay mountains. we could see peak wind gusts. it will be dry and breezy and we could see the fires, any fires that do start, spread quickly. we are headed toward the low 80s in santa rosa and napa. mostly upper 70s for the south bay. we'll talk about the warmer temperatures in the forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. police investigating a deadly crash in san jose. one of two cars flipped over. happened late last night at gurdwara avenue and carrera

court in san jose near clark mel elementary school. overnight police closed the area. more people believe masks maybe should come down, and cierra johnson is live for us in san francisco this morning. what are people saying about the mask mandate? >> good morning, marcus. experts say we are headed in the right direction, and there are fewer infections, and there are more vaccinations across the state, and that could be the perfect storm to reduce the mask mandates. discussions are ongoing to figure out where there may be flexibility. the article explains the nature of the changes as well as the

timing right now unclear, but dr. colfax says his team is taking a look at the issue as the city sees a positive path downward in terms of both cases as well as hospitalizations. where the state stand in transmission rates? california is leading the nation with the lowest rate of transmission, and california is substantial and other state is in the high category. the latest numbers show the rate has fallen to 7%. san francisco was at 2.3% of transmission, and the cdc's threshold is under 5% to reduce the mask mandate. there's a chance we could see a higher rate of vaccination if the pfizer vaccine for the kids 5 to 11 is approved, and then you would see more individuals

receiving that vaccine. local officials saying we're on a good path with cases down and vaccination rates up. >> hopefully we will get to move forward soon. thanks, cierra. taking a live look at san jose where city workers are facing a vaccination deadline. starting tomorrow they must show proof of vaccination or they risk losing their job. the city is also limiting its weekly testing alternative only to those eligible for a medical or religious exemption. negotiations still under way with some unions including police and firefighters as the deadline approaches. new numbers show 400,000 americans already received their covid booster shot since the white house gave its approve last week. in the next few weeks, nearly 1 million americans are scheduled to get the third shot, meanwhile a new booster site in marin opens today, and it's at north

gate shopping center and they will offer the pfizer boosters and flu shots. can you make an appointment through the marin health and human services website. you can click on covid booster eligibility on the trending bar on our website. we break down who is able to get the third dose, and when moderna and johnson & johnson could begin sending out their own booster shots. a san francisco sheriff's deputy due in court today as we are learning more about the paw incident. he was attending a potluck dinner where he is accuse of groping somebody and pulling their hair and then threatening to return and shoot everybody, and he's now facing felony charges and is on paid leave.

the san francisco university campus was quiet yesterday after a threat was posted on social media. while the threat was quickly deleted, the school went remote for the day. police eventually detained somebody for questioning. san jose leaders is holding a event today after a resolution was adopted acknowledging the events of may 4th, 1887, when china town went up in flames destroying homes and businesses after the city council said china town was a nuisance. now, san jose is the largest city in the state to ban flavored tobacco products. in recent years vaping among teenagers has skyrocketed along with health-related problems connected to vaping.

tobacco companies say vaping is less harmful, they say, than cigarettes. let's take a live look across the bay area this morning with the sunrise about 45 minutes away. i know kari always loves this time of day. is it cold out there right now? parts of the north bay will be under a fire watch, and it's a weather watch later today. kari hall is tracking the conditions for us this morning and as people get ready for school. >> yeah, getting ready to get the kids up in a little while and getting them ready for school. berkeley, temperatures chilly, jacket weather for the start of the day, low 50s, and then in the low 60s at pickup time. we will have breezy winds and temperatures staying mild today. in the north bay our temperatures at about 4:00 this afternoon in the low 80s. once again, that's where we are watching fire weather watches, and in the east bay, we have low 80s and san jose will be at 74 degrees. still pretty nice.

it's about time to head out for that morning run. we will start to see our temperatures in the east bay very chilly as you head out the door, and then a nice warm-up. i would probably wait until later. it will be in the low 70s. we keep the nice weather today but warming up tomorrow in the east bay. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. at the speed limit and steady wins the race. fremont, a nice build, and we'll show you more spots around the bay coming up. happy wednesday to you. united airlines tells us it's ready to dismiss hundreds of employees who refused to get vaccinated and could do so anytime. the deadline for employees was the day before yesterday, but the airlines says it will allow people to stay if their get their first dose before their termination meeting. as many as 600 employees could be effected. united tells us another 2,000

employees have applied for religious or health exemptions, and they don't get to work, they will be placed on leave and united will make a decision yesterday. janet yellen was on capitol hill tuesday warning lawmakers if they fail to extend the debt ceiling the u.s. economy will face a crisis. republicans have been blocking moves to raise the ceiling, raising the possibility the u.s. will default on its debt for the first time in american history. wall street got whacked on tuesday. tech stocks in particular sending the nasdaq down almost 3%. part of this is better yields on government debt. money moves to the most profitable places, and that's the same debt we just said was in danger of default. house prices continue to rise. if you group together the nation's 20 largest housing markets, they are hitting yet new records, up 20% year to year

today, really comfortable at lunchtime in the low 70s. for the south bay, 80 in morgan hill. for the east bay, we will see the temperatures up to about 82 in danville, and hayward looking at a high of 74 degrees. near the coast we're in the low 60s. you head over to palo alto and it's warmer, reaching 77. 60s in san francisco, and the north bay temperatures reaching 82 in santa rosa and 84 in clearlake. the 7-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and you will see we're heating up. this as high pressure builds across the region, and we will see a summer-like weekend and then a cold front move into the northwest. let's check out gilroy. our temperatures going way up. it's going to be summer-like this weekend, reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s. then take a look at the dip in

temperatures. we're going from 91 on monday to a big drop, upper 70s on tuesday. then those steps keep going down. by friday we could see highs only in the upper 60s, so if you are looking forward to fall, it's coming next week. we will see our temperatures give us one more blast of summer as our highs reach into the low 90s this weekend, and then once again cooler by the end of next week. for san francisco, we have not a whole lot of changes here. still clouds at times, and temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s. but it does look like a really nice weekend. mike, so far things have been fairly quiet on the roads? >> relatively quiet after early morning tri-valley issues around dublin, and then clear on the 580 as far as incidents go. the first slowing clearing up in time for the second slowing to build. light volume on the sensors, but at the toll plaza we're seeing

build. over here, castro valley, things are starting to back up. there's a minor crash. north 238 just before 880 that will back up folks, and that could be a concern for folks. we will track that off the dublin grade and heading over to the nimitz. pittsburg into walnut creek, highway 4 with a slowdown. we are still looking at your typical pattern right now at the half hour mark heading into walnut creek. the bay bridge toll plaza, this is the backup. it filled in earlier today than yesterday, and right now everything on pace getting over there. >> wow, a lot of traffic. don't want to sit in it. an exclusive interview with simone biles. the superstar gymnast is in the bay this week and is opening up

road is supposed to remain closed in both directions for another half hour. the power may be off until this afternoon, and that includes st. mary's college. and america's top doctor saying the decision for emergency use for the vaccine for children should not be rushed. >> this comes, kris, as many school districts are thinking about making the vaccine mandatory. >> yeah, the vaccine for younger children is not yet approved so the mandate is for 12 and older. pfizer submitted data for emergency use for authorization for 5 to 11 years old. in the last two weeks nationwide 8% more children tested positive

for those struggling to make it in the bay. it comes with the state moratorium set to expire tomorrow clearing the way for landlords to start removing tenants for failing to pay rent during the pandemic. the rally starts at 3:30 at the embarcadero plaza, and they are going to march to an undisclosed location. 7% of california tenants are behind on their rent according to federal data. later this morning, mayor libby schaaf will update the program specifically designed to provide affordable houses for oakland teachers. it offers assistant to teachers with price cuts. a fire weather watch kicks in at 11:00 this morning, but the area of highest concern is the interior ranges of napa

point. >> yeah, a lot boiling in the stew. let's start with paying our debt. the republicans have once again block add move to raise the debt ceiling. if we don't raise it america will not be able to pay off its debts. we never defaulted before. treasury secretary, janet yellen warned the vote could cause catastrophic consequences to the economy including higher interest rates and job losses. she calls it a self inflicted wound of enormous proportion. the debt ceiling covers things we already spent money on, including money we spent during the trump administration. money both parties agreed to spend at the time. so it's money we promised to pay back, red and blue. >> if republicans want to vote to not pay the debt they helped incur, they can all vote no. we're just asking republicans to get out of the way.

get out of the way. when you are risking the full faith and credit of the united states to play a nasty political game. >> senate minority leader, mitch mcconnell, has been the lead blocker on the debt ceiling issue, and others are noting house leader mccarthy on the right once supported protecting america's full faith and credit at all costs. back in 2015 he tweeted when th house voted today to avoid the threat of default. and at issue, $1 trillion infrastructure bill that pretty much everybody likes. this can get passed. the more than $3 trillion spending bill, no republicans like and even some democrats are against this.

get out of debt and make it more efficient. beginning friday, some first class mail and periodicals could take more time to arrive. items like first class packages or items traveling from one zone to another could take two more days on top of the normal. and they will increase the package delivery through christmas, and it could be 75 cents to $5 per item. and something else that could affect things as well, and we are talking about the logjam of container ships. there's record demand for goods into the united states which increased ship traffic, and second there's a shortage of truck drivers and warehouse

space to move and store those goods. >> if i am a local farmer trying to get a truck driver to drive my shipment of tomatoes to the market, i might suddenly find that my favorite trucking company doesn't have enough truck drivers because there are lucrative jobs that consumer electronics companies are paying a premium for the same service. it's just a matter of who has the deeper pockets that is able to buy up all of the available talented skilled drivers being one of them. >> locally, the port of oakland says it handled fewer ships last month than a year ago, because many of the ships diverted the logjam on the west coast. evidence of fewer ships were carrying much more products in

64 in the marina district, while the mission district reaches 69. north bay temperatures up to 84 in clearlake, sonoma and mill valley headed toward 79 degrees. we will see high pressure building across the region, and that will bump up our temperatures. once that starts to fade we will see a storm system approaching from the pacific northwest. a long line of showers, although most of us won't see any of the rain, it kind of dries up before it gets here. we will have the cooldown. concord, normally in the low 80s this time of year. that's where we will be today. notice the boost in temperatures for the weekend. yeah, mike is already groaning. air-conditioning up on full blast with the highs in the low 90s. then take a look at next week. by next friday we could possibly only see highs in the low 70s, so i am looking forward to that. we are going to see the temperatures for the inland areas in the low to mid-80s. mid-90s for the weekend, and then heading back down by the middle of next week.
