70s late morning to the afternoon. we will warm up quickly throughout the afternoon. we'll see a high of livermore. in san jose, expect a high of 88 degrees. we'll talk more about some events going on coming up in a few minutes, mark and kris. >> we have more breaking treatments now. the drugmaker, merck, plans to seek authorization use for another treatment. it's in phase 3 trials, and the company said it cut the risks of hospitalizations and death in half. 800 patients that took part in the trial were unvaccinated and at risk of symptoms.

happening now the city of san jose's vaccine mandate is now in effect. if you are a city worker, you need to have already started the process. that includes police and fire. hundreds who still have not gotten their shot could face disciplinary action. >> for health and safety, san jose city leaders say it's requiring all of its workers to get a covid vaccine, and if they refuse they could eventually get fired. 8%, 585 people are not vaccinated. there have been anti-mandate protests several times outside of city hall. one reserved police officer told us he quit. what happens to the 585 workers? >> they will be given a final opportunity, at least a week to

comply with the policy upon final discipline being served to them. >> police tell us the other unions are negotiating with the city. they have asked instead for the option of testing. >> if the city moves to take them off the streets and terminate their employment, we are barely holding on to a police department right now. that would decimate this police department. >> around the bay, oakland is mandating its employees be fully vaccinated by november 1st, and so is san francisco, but those that work in high-risks settings like police officers have until november 13th. police chief, bill scott, is laying out plans in case they refuse to get it. if there are suspensions are

>> yes, we are. it's going to be a nice weekend. we are starting out with a clear view in san francisco this morning, and this is what we will see most likely throughout the weekend as we are heading out the door in fairfield, low temperatures in the 50s to start the day, and the early hours is the best time for outdoor activities as well as when we have better air quality. we will see more smoke coming in today as temperatures head into the 70s, by late morning into the afternoon, and that's when we will see our temperatures reaching into the 90s in some spot. oakland, expect a high of 80 degrees. mainly 70s and it's going to be warm all across the bay area. as we see the hazy sky making those weekend outdoor plans, we'll talk more about what we have going on around the bay area in just a few minutes. they are an iconic part of san francisco and american

for concord. fremont, 87kld today reaching a degrees. near the coast we will have nice and comfortable temperatures reach into the mid-70s for half moon bay. san francisco reaching 81 downtown. 92 in novato and napa today in the upper 80s. a look at our dry conditions. the drought monitor gets updated every thursday, and today is the start of the new water year, and we are going into it with the highest amount of drought possible, exceptional drought here in the bay area. you see reminders in the water bill to conserve water, and that's definitely needed. in october, we do get about two inches of rain, and it's not a

lot of rain, of course, but as we are looking ahead to how much rain we could see, and what our usual numbers are, about three quarters of an inch for san francisco and a little over an inch for san jose. as we look down the line to see if there's any chance of rain in our forecast, we're hot and dry for the weekend, but then go into next week we could see the storm system approaching and it shows rain nearby, and a slight chance of showers by next wednesday into thursday. doesn't look like we will see a lot of the rain, definitely not a lot of moisture with it, but it will cool us down significantly. morgan hill, we're in the 90s this weekend, and that will continue into monday. look at the drop-off in temperatures we'll see. what we are doing this weekend with the swimming and the beach activities, that's not what we will be doing next weekend

because it will be much cooler. we can spend more time outside and not have to run the air-conditioning. as we look at the 7-day forecast, we have 90s in the forecast for a few days, the last blast of summer here hopefully before we transition to more fall-like temperatures for a while. we will see temperatures in the inland areas reach into the 70s by the end of next week, and san francisco in the mid-70s throughout the weekend and then mid-60s next week. we will see the return of the fog by next tuesday and wednesday. mike, heading out the door, you had the issue in the east bay -- >> she said tuesday, fog, so chill for now. not a major problem, but the crews are clearing from the bridge. yes, kari, we are following the big issue in the east bay and traffic on the main freeways, just fine.

4:57. welcome back. now to a live look in las vegas this morning. today marks four years since a gunman opened fire from his hotel room killing 18 people and injuring hundreds. to this day investigators have yet to determine a motive for that shooting. that gunman killed himself before police could reach him. tonight there will be a ceremony honoring the lives lost that night.
