of former employee after she leveled serious allegations against the social media giant. now she's calling for lawmakers to regulate the tech company. today in the bay's chris pallone, live on capitol hill with more on what the ceo, mark zuckerberg, is now saying. chris? >> reporter: laura, good morning. facebook ceo, mark zuckerberg, responding to what frances haugen had to say. in a company-wide letter he shared on facebook, zuckerberg said the company's work was mischaracterized saying at the heart of these accusations is this idea that we prioritize profit over safety and well-being. that's just not true. his statement comes following frances haugen' testimony saying facebook allowed and promotes hateful content to keep users

to face a covid vaccination deadline or risk losing their jobs. vaccination status will have to be submitted by the end of november. anybody who receives an exemption will have to be tested regularly. across the bay, san francisco city workers, the worker vaccine requirement seems to be having the intended affect. the first vaccination deadline was september 30th for health care workers. for other workers it's as late as november 1st. "the chronicle" reports 860 employees got share shots in the first days surrounding the deadline. there are 1,800 unvaccinated workers with 300 under reported. the workforce number is 35,000. since the pandemic started, californians have been alerted to the exposure by an app. half of all smartphone users use

it. it's a valuable tool. >> it's not a replacement for traditional contact tracing, and we probably avoided tens of thousands of infections and saved dozens or even thousands of lives. >> it alerts you if you have gotten into close contact with anybody that tests positive for covid. 6:08. a live look at the richmond bridge toll plaza this morning. to mark california clean air day, the city is holding a community bike ride that starts at 11:30 in the morning. just ahead, mike will have some free transit options coming today. first, kari, bikers, walkers, we all want to know what we are waking up to weather-wise. take a jacket with you? >> yeah, take a jacket. it's going to be cooler today. it's going to be good to get outside for that bike ride or

encouraging you to reduce emissions on the roadway. unfortunately, i have to get you out to the maps and we're talking about the big problem in the south bay. right now the south bay is light, obviously. we have the typical build on the 101, and this is compounded by a deadly crash. a person was walking on 680 and they were hit and killed about half an hour ago. northbound 680 is closed at jackson avenue. the bigger exit is the capitol expressway. you are forced off the roadway at jackson, and that will take you up north to capital expressway, and that will get you passed the closure. this is backing up traffic on 101, and that will cause a problem. king road will have a backup as well. that's for the south bay. the east bay recovery from an earlier crash, there's still slowing through hayward, and the

expressway. we will see the ripple, which is happening already for silicon valley. happy wednesday to you. happy unless you have a lot of money in the stock market, and that's because it's looking rough again. the futures, the bets that traders make on the open show, we will see losses on the open again today. if the markets felt really up and down lately that's because it is up and down. in fact, we are seeing some of the biggest volatility since the early days of the pandemic. once again, money moving out of the market, equities and into government bonds, which are paying more than they used to. a reminder in the grand scheme of things, money is never gained or loss, it just moves from place to place. facebook, we'll talk about that. chris pallone was talking about facebook testimony, and we are getting a bigger pictu outage. facebook said yesterday it was an update they sent out to the servers, but the problem is when

it went wrong the update itself prevented them from fixing it, because it knocked facebook off-line and all the company's tools off-line, and it could not send the important message out telling the update to stop. alex hearn did a good job explaining it. facebook company runs everything through facebook so when the servers were booted off the internet it also booted off the ability to log on to the system that would send the logoff system, and it would lock the smart lock door for the servers, and the messaging service used to contact security to tell them to hightail it to the datacenter with a key to override the smart lock door lock on the front door, and facebook locked the keys to the car in the trunk. most catastrophic mistakes

happen this wake, and it's not the first minor mistake that causes the disaster, it's the second mistake where now you can't turn back. "forbes" came out with the richest people, and jeff bezos is on top, and donald trump fell off it altogether. "forbes" points out, had trump did what government advisers asked him to do, divest his holdings while he was president he would not have lost his money because he would have sold at . it would have been difficult to sell off that much real estate quickly, and he instead kept his sons in charge of the company, and they kept the original investments which are now significantly >> that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

will be released. >> i am still bothered by all that littering you mentioned. >> yeah, we are very sensitive to that. >> yeah, go back. >> i am excited about the music. >> she's a talent. she really is. another talent here in the bay area? >> meteorologist, kari hall? >> you got it. she has the forecast. how is it looking out there, kari? >> we are starting out with clouds this morning that will hang around throughout today this next cold front moves into the bay area. going to continue to drop our temperatures as we're seeing the system passing by with not a lot of green on here, which would indicate some rain. we are looking at temperatures cooling down today, and it's heading toward 73 in milpitas and san jose. 73 as well in gilroy with a breezy wind and peeks of sunshine. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. as we head towards 74 in livermore as well as walnut creek, and hayward today staying

in the upper 60s. near the coast we have lower 60s. at times fog rolling by, but otherwise a mainly cloudy sky. upper 60s for red would city. san francisco will reach up to about 64 in the mission district and 59 in the outer sunset. and it's going to feel nice and fall-like as we enjoy the fall-like weather. still, once again, cloudy throughout today and tomorrow as well as the first part of friday. even though we will see showers over the sierra, looks like we stay dry here and then we get clearing and warming temperatures. the smoke is blowing away from us, so as we look at the air quality, much of the smoke from the kmp fire is drifting off toward the east over nevada and montana over the next few days. our temperatures stay fall-like as we get a look at our high temperatures from napa going from the mid-70s to the upper 60s by the end of the weekend. it does look to stay very mild,

at least into next week with temperatures in the upper 70s for the valleys for today, but upper 60s for tomorrow and friday. a very nice but comfortable weekend ahead. mike, heading out you were tracking breaking news? >> yeah, kari, that's the deadly crash in san jose. a tough morning for a few folks involved in the crash and involved parties. northbound 680 blocked here at jackson just south of capital expressway. it's causing a buildup for northbound 101. some will move over towards capital, and that will increase the backups we usually see. they are going to hopefully open a couple lanes northbound, but that won't be for a while. right now you are forced off at jackson, and that will take you up to the capital expressway. the bay bridge toll plaza, we

king and then rejoin 680 north of there. we will track that and the rest of your commute, coming up. >> thanks, mike. police investigating a shooting near the oakland zoo. this is new video coming in where officers shut down may avenue to 73rd avenue. there are evidence markers showing bullet casings on the ground. we know one person was shot but no update so far on their condition. oakland experiencing a surge in violent crimes, and the chief asking for the public's help. there were 17 homicides in september, and 107 this year. here's the latest look at the numbers from the american academy of pediatrics. it was a 16% decrease from the previous week, and it's the

lowest weekly total from august 12th, when most schools started. and east bay teachers will rally for changes tonight. today in the bay's bob riddell is live for us. the cases with the kids are low. >> reporter: you are correct, marcus. the teachers within oakland unified acknowledges that as much, that covid cases are down within the district. here are the latest numbers. you can see the week of september 27th, there were 21 students and four staff that tested positive for covid, and as of this morning two classrooms within the district are in quarantine, and these numbers are low when you consider the enrollment is 35,000 students plus 4,800 students and staff. in spite of this teachers say there are many safety issues that need to be addressed when

it comes to covid. one teacher pointed out there's only ten testing sites throughout the district that are only open between the hours of 8:00 and 4:00. >> we won't know what the real infection rate is or how many cases there actually are until test something available at every single school site. >> we have done more testing in oakland than any other school district besides los angeles. >> they have already tested more than 41,000 student and staff members, and they point out test kits are running low due to nationwide demand. teachers are concerned about air circulation in crowded cafeterias during the rainy season, if we have a rainy season because of thena school association st letter to president biden, the california

school board's association to governor newsom asking the administration to stop threats against the educators and school board members. law enforcement agencies have not helped to enforce mandates. the associations say incidents are on the rise with parents' reaction to covid-19 protocols, and mask mandates and how classrooms address race and other social issues. >> it's so important for those teachers and students to feel safe while they are in those environments. bob riddell, thank you so much. things took a personal turn during the city council meeting in los gatos. police were called in after tempers flared. an argument started during earlier public comments over mask mandates. the speaker then got personal

accusing the mayor and her son of threats against she and her son. the mayor adjourned the meeting and the heated argument happened in the hallway. police had to get in between the two sides. nobody was hurt or arrests were made. the meeting was later continued online and the mayor was not present. and then expected to set a resentencing date for scott peterson. his sentence was overturned last year and he's been on death row without a sentencing date. it's likely a new sentencing date will be scheduled for next month. and then the credibility of one of the key witnesses in the elizabeth holmes' trial. adam rosendorff testified at length last week. holmes' attorneys trying to punch holes in his competency, questioning the accuracy of e-mails he sent to his higher

ups. rosendorff blew the whistle on the company's failed blood testing technology. you can follow the debrief on who is on the stand and who is ahead at nbcbayarea.com, and it's at the top of the home page. and then the coast guard says a 13-inch split in the pipe is the source of the oil leak that spilled 144,000 gallons of oil along the orange county coastline. there are new reports out that talk about the spill that it may have started on friday night. a new timeline is emerging about what happened on saturday. those findings show that workers received a lowered pressure alarm at 2:30 saturday morning that indicated a potential

problem, and three hours later an oil rig operator shutdown the line, and then the company waited three more hours to contact the national resources center. now to california's worsening drought and new efforts to save water. pleasanton leaders declared a stage 2 water shortage asking all residents to cut water usage by 15%. pleasanton and livermore got their water from zone 7 water agency. pleasanton mandated 15% cuts, and for now no special rates or penalties for excessive use of water. looking across the bay area, a nice start to our day. want to check in with meteorologist, kari hall, right now. a little feel of fall in the air right now, finally. >> yes, finally. it's going to be nice to have the cooler temperatures with us along with the beautiful,

you can probably leave the sunglasses at home because we won't see a lot of sun today. in fact a lot of clouds rolling by us as a system passes by and keeps our temperatures in the east bay in the mid-70s today and near the coast we're in the low 60s for daly city. down in palo alto we have low 70s today. once again, mid-60s downtown and upper 50s for the marina district. for our north bay highs we are headed to the mid-70s today. the cooling continues with a lot of clouds rolling by with this weather system pasting. unfortunately it's not bringing us a lot of rain, but there will be a chance if you are headed over towards the sierra. you may encounter some of the scattered showers there, but much of the bay area and region will stay dry. a strong westerly wind pushing the smoke from the kmp fire up towards nevada and montana, and so for us the smoke is moving away and our air quality continues to stay really good.

our temperatures for the interior valleys reach into the upper 60s for the end of the week. you will probably want to put the sweaters away for the weekend as the sunshine returns, and we are heading back into the upper 70s while san francisco will see highs in the low to mid-60s. mike, what is the update on the breaking news? >> we have an alert here in the south bay. everything else doing fine as far as the drive. the deadly crash has lanes on 680 closed, and you are forced off at jackson avenue and that's causing a backup on northbound 101. capital expressway seeing more traffic because it's the alternate that takes you back passed the crash and back on 680. chp says they hope to clear a couple lanes soon on 680. the backup at the bay bridge is standard. back to you. >> thank you very much.

this year. oakland city workers are the latest to face a covid vaccination deadline or risk losing their jobs. vaccination status will have to be submitted by the end of november. anybody that receives an exemption will have to be tested regularly. across the bay, san francisco city workers vaccine requirements seems to be having the intended affect it wanted. the september vaccination deadline for september 30th for health care workers, and other members as late as november 1st. there are 1,800 unvaccinated city workers. oakland teachers say the school district is not doing enough to protect them and students from covid. bob riddell joins us live. teachers are planning to rally? >> yeah, they will try and get the school board to make changes.

the teachers have a couple issues, one, the number of testing sites throughout the district, there's only ten sites and the district points out oakland unified has done more testing of students and staff than any other district in the state of california other than los angeles. teachers concerned about cafeteria air circulation during the rainy seasons. it should be noted that oakland unified right now only has a handful of covid cases during the week of september 27th, 21 students, four staff tested positive. as of this morning, two classrooms are in quarantine. that's low given the fact that oakland unified has an enrollment of more than 35,000 students and 4,800 staff. the coast guard says the

13-inch split in the pipe is the source of the leak that spilled 144,000 gallons of oil along the orange county coastline. the leak is capped but miles of coastline affected along with fish and wildlife. such a concern down there. >> certainly is. all right. it's time to get a look at the 7-day forecast for you. meteorologist, kari hall, has been tracking that. what can we expect? >> it looks pretty good for us today. we're looking at a lot of clouds passing by and cooler temperatures with the valley temperatures in the mid-70s. we can leave the air-conditioning off today as well as for the next several days as we see highs in the valleys reaching up into the upper 60s. it will warm up once the front moves out for the weekend, our valley temperatures in the upper 70s while san francisco will see mid-60s. mike? >> traffic shift to the south bay, more traffic north of capital expressway. capital expressway is jamming up
