this is also monday morning. thank you for joining us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we will have your drive times coming up in a moment. mike is standing that. first, let's get a warning in e for all of the areas shaded in red. this continues until tomorrow evening. we are seeing the wind gust picking up to 60 miles per hour in some locations. we also have a wind advisory in effect for pretty much all of the bay area. we will see some of the highest wind gusts up until 8:00 this evening. especially for the valleys as well, and the diablo hills, we will see winds gusting. take a look at the wind speeds we're expecting in the middle of the afternoon. winds at 35 to over 40 miles per

hour, and even inday. go into tonight it's still going to be windy. an extended period of time dealing with the high wind gusts as we go into today. we are going to see unfortunately the high fire danger continuing. i will continue to monitor this. we will talk more about what is ahead with the temperatures and the rest of the forecast, coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. thank you so much, kari. with the red flag warnings now in effect people in the north bay could have their power shut off due to the high fire danger. >> the shut offs cover alameda, solano, sonoma, contra costa and napa. in each case the overall number being impacted is small. napa county is to have the most outages in the bay area with about 2,500.

let's turn to mike who has been tracking the commute for us. >> i was noticing a slow drive here on the bridge here. again there, may be a crew there or it may be guesting for folks, and probably not the cause but there's a advisory there for the bay bridge, and also the san mateo bridge. the san mateo bridge has the high-rise and tends to get gusty. even out of the altamont pass, so far no problems. a minor crash is on the shoulder. back to you. the first pill to treat covid could soon be available to americans. merck is asking the fda for emergency authorization of the

drug. also breaking, two men recognized for achievements, specifically on the market affects of minimum wages, immigration and education. in the meantime the other half of the prize will be shared with stanford economists, guido imtphupbts. you know trouble has not stopped for southwest airlines on sunday after a chaotic saturday. and the long lines, angry

passengers. today in the bay's alyssa gourd reports. >> steven smith got the e-mail at 2:00 a.m. saying his morning flight on southwest from san jose to las vegas would be delayed ten hours. >> they said don't try to rebook it because it will be wednesday before you can, you know, get to your destination. i was, like, okay, i will keep the 8:45 p.m. flight. >> it's out of our control. horrible. >> flight aware shows in san francisco 14 southwest flights were canceled and five delayed

at sjc, 31 canceled and 18 delays, and a similar situation in oakland with dozens of cancelations. two passengers told us they hurt from gate agents workers calling out sick led to the delays. we asked southwest about that, and they replied that southwest florida airports saw weather and air traffic control herbs, quote, triggering delays and prompting significant cancelations for us beginning friday evening. alex from oakland needed to get back from chicago, and had to rebook on another airline. he's now out 600 bucks and said southwest explanations doesn't add up. >> if it's weather related, why are all the other air lines operating. so it just seemed like a mess. >> regardless of the explanation, many passengers like steven are hoping they will even chely reach their

destination. >> i guess i will be all right. but it sucks. >> another hitch for stranded passengers here, if their flights are not taking off yet, they cannot check in through security. many are waiting here next to the security counter with their luggage, and they are hungry, unable to get to the food at the terminal and without a ride able to pick them up. cruise ships are coming back in san francisco. this morning the majestic princess returns to the port of san francisco. you may remember in march of 2020, the grand princess was forced to wait offshore, and this is before docking at the port of oakland after nearly 20 crew members were testing positive for covid. 4:37.

time to get a look at the forecast. meteorologist, kari hall, is following the red flag warning. >> yeah, we have to be careful over the next 24 to 36 hours. this continuing until 5:00 tomorrow evening. the high wind gusts means we could see fires that might start rapidly because of the high winds and low humidity. let's go through the relative humidity today. this is something that causes fires to spread quickly as well, and the relative humidity numbers, when they are in the teens it dries out the vegetation more and we have record dry vegetation already to begin with with the drought. tomorrow morning, usually we see the humidity levels coming to the 70% range, and it's only going to be 25% humidity starting out tomorrow morning. in the overnight hour when we get time to have higher

good monday morning. it's 4:41. we had nice cool weather over the weekend and we are just going to be slightly warmer today in some spots in the inland east bay reaching into the low 70s. 67 in hayward and palo alto. a high of 68 degrees in santa rosa. we are going to see gusting winds and we will be tracking that in the forecast, coming up. right now the golden gate bridge, a clear view for the drivers, and there's moisture in the air with the glow of the lights. we will see how things are shaping up in the business world. >> markets set to open lower during the week. investors shook off concerns about a much weaker than expected jobs report on thursday morning. the s&p 500 was down 0.2 of a

percent. we will hear from major banks to kick off third quarter earning seasons. we will get data on consumer prices and check on inflation and retail sales. meantime, facebook says it is making changes. it's going to launch the new take a break features. one of the other features will, quote, nudge teens, if they are repeatedly looking at content not good for their well-being. a former employee leaked internal documents and testified that facebook harms children. the latest movie "no time to die" touted $56 million during the u.s. opening weekend.

a very good monday morning to you. taking a live look outside. san francisco, city by the bay. a lot of activity there this weekend. the giants and dodgers game, blue angels, fleet week. >> on a boat. >> now it's back to reality. monday morning, folks.

>> this is a slap of reality, too, especially for october when we see the offshore winds picking up. the red flag warning continues, started yesterday evening. we are still looking at high wind gusts, very low humidity. you have seen the brown hills and the humidity will stay very logo into this morning. at the same time we have the wind advisory for much of the rest of the bay area that's not even included in the red flag warning, so i do still think we will have a high fire danger even in the valleys as the winds will gust up to 30 miles per hour today. for the criteria for a red flag warning issued usually 12 to 24 hours in advance, we saw that yesterday when it went out, and if you have the nbc bay area app you got that alert. humidity levels at 15% or less, which is what we are going to see in the middle of the day today. the high wind gusts reaching at 25 miles per hour, and these are

happening at the same time. the northerly wind at 15 to 20 miles per hour in the tri-valley, but look how strong it will be near the coast. san francisco getting the 30 to 40-mile-per-hour gusts today, and with where we see the bright colors, that's where the gusts will be higher. as we take a look at our highs, we're looking at the mid to upper 60s and low 70s for a few spots. livermore reaching up to 65. low 60s near the coast. mid-60s up and down the peninsula. san francisco will be in the low 60s and we'll see upper 60s and low 70s in a few spots in the north bay. take a look at gilroy in our forecast. if you are wondering how the rest of the week will shape up and even beyond, we are in the upper 60s today. we do keep the cool weather and we will get a boost in the temperatures for the weekend. here we are looking at mid-80s for inland spots, and that's what is we are seeing for the

inland valleys, that's what we will see today and tomorrow. temperatures for the rest of the week, basically peaking on friday. san francisco in the mid-60s today and we have 70s on the way by the end of the week. mike, chp also issued the wind advisories. >> yeah, they have their own opinions, and it's not scientific, but how the crews are going across the bay bridge. so they put a note in there. the antioch bridge, that goes high over the water. keep an eye out for the bridges. a lot of folks may be affected by gusty winds at times. so far the drive through the altamont pass, light traffic and a little backup or slowing there. crash still affecting the

washington on-ramp to northbound 880, and the huh sparen off-ramp in california, more than 40% of people speak more than english at home. >> spanish is the second most spoken. kris sanchez introduces us to a local folk artist. >> in latino households many kids learn songs like "it'sy bitsy spider in english. ♪
