mountains and the north bay hills and north bay mountains and up and down the diablo range. this continues until 5:00 tomorrow evening, as it's gusty and the winds will continue. we have dry vegetation, which is the moisture that is lacking within the vegetation out there. it's going to be windy today as well as still some of the cool air, but the humidity will be dropping as we go into this afternoon. we will head over to bob redell live in the dublin hills where we are still watching the high fire danger. it's going to be critical these next 36 hours, bob. >> reporter: that's why the national weather service has issued this red flag warning that's going to be in effect until 5:00 tomorrow night. as i stand here overlooking dublin hide me, we can feel a little breeze, nothing gusty but there's definitely wind out

here. the national weather service is predicting for the east bay hills and valleys behind me and the santa cruz mountains and in the mountains of the north bay, we are talking about wind gusts 40 to 60 miles per hour, and with the dry conditions, that's why there's a risk for wildfires from moderate to rapid. this year marked four years since the tubs fire happened, and gary lived in the neighborhood in santa rosa which was leveled. he's still living in a trailer with his dogs, but just months away from rebuilding completely himself. >> the community is focusing on rebuilding, and even when we have everything rebuilt there will still be a trauma that will remain in this community.

>> mandates are facing strong objections in some areas, but for now the news is generally good with an uncertain future on the horizon. new data showing a big difference in covid death rates among those unvaccinated. here in california people without the shots between the ages of 15 and 20 more likely to die during the month of september. the state data you see right here shows a 7-day average of deaths for unvaccinated people 16 and older. the numbers spike here in september, as can you see right here. this is similar to what we saw back in january and february. the added line here is showing the number of deaths among those who are fully vaccinated, and you could see much lower here. look at that. and that is all across the board. happening tomorrow, contra costa county leaders will consider if the spreading of

covid misinformation is a public health crisis. there will be a declaration and creation of new p misinformatio for the reason some people are not wearing masks or following other covid protocols. and in just a few hours, two will visit the oil spill. there's a bill to ban oil and gas drilling off the coast of florida, oregon and california. new overnight, the u.s. tsunami warning center says there's no threat of a tsunami. it was centered about 40 miles from where an 8.2 earthquake struck just two months ago. so far no reports of any damage.

where we will have the highest fire dangers as the gusts continue up to 60 miles per hour. we will watch that throughout today as the winds come from the north. the winds are really going to be rushing over the bay area today. here we are at 3:00 this afternoon, and winds coming in from the north at about 25 to 35 miles per hour, and once again we will receive the bright reds and the purple indicates where we will have the highest wind gusts and highest fire danger. still windy tonight, and we will continue to monitor that throughout the day. >> you see here the trees and bushes at the bay bridge toll plaza. across the span, i think that's what caltrans and chp reported as well, not only the bay bridge but the benicia bridge. smooth flow of traffic across

advisories pretty much everywhere for the bay area today. wind gusts at 20 to 30 miles per hour. we are also looking at the relative humidity, and let's go through the day and where you see the bright reds that's where the humidity will be the lowest. it drops into the teens this afternoon. santa rosa, napa, novato, you can see the relative humidity numbers critically dry. when the humidity is this low if you get a fire it just spreads more rapidly. when the air is dry, the winds are gusting and it dries out the vegetation even more which is already had a record dry level. going into the overnight hours, we normally see the humidity levels coming up, and it comes up to the 25 to 30% range which is very dry. as we go into today, our te very chilly again tonight, s and especially in the north bay as we drop down into the mid-40s. this is 4:00 tomorrow morning,

so as you are waking up at this time, it's going to be cool inside the house. you may have to turn on the heater a little bit. you can open up the windows tomorrow afternoon, as the winds continue to gusts and the highs stay on the cool side with 60s and 70s. we will warm up in the extended forecast. let's look at concord, look at the weekend, as you start to make plans on this monday morning, expect it to feel warm and summer like for the inland areas. you can see the warming trend with temperatures peaking on friday into saturday and then coming down a few degrees for sunday. gusting winds in san francisco, expect those winds at about 35 to 40 miles per hour today, so going to make sure everything is strapped down and ready for the high winds. before you head out the door, they will be in the low 70s by the end of the week there along the coast. mike, how is it looking now that chp issued that wind advisory?

warnings now in effect. meteorologist, kari hall, now tracking the conditions. southwest airlines under fire as flights are delayed and cancelled across the country, and a report on why the company's explanation doesn't fly with some people. and then the pandemic turning point. this is "today in the bay." welcome to monday morning. thank you for starting your day with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we will look at the morning commute coming up in just a bit, but first we have to start out with meteorologist, kari hall, and she has a closer look at the red flag warning. >> we are seeing high wind gusts especially in some of the higher elevations. this is when we have the highest fire danger through tomorrow evening with the winds gusting possibly up to about 60 miles per hour. we know the vegetation is extremely dry and the humidity is going to be very low, even in the valleys looking at wind advisories, so this includes the

rest of the bay area that are not in that red flag warning as winds gusts will 15 to 30 miles per hour. we are now under the red flag warning as the humidity levels continue to drop and some of the wind gusts will frequently hit 25 miles per hour or higher, and both of these happening at the same time. at least the temperatures staying very mild with the fire danger continuing today, and we are mostly looking at 60s and 70s across the bay area. we'll talk more about the hour-by-hour wind forecast. we'll look at that coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. with the red flag warning now in effect people in parts of the bay area could have their electricity cut off because of the high fire danger. we have the latest outages -- this is not it. i want to show you counties, and

area airports. 2,000 southwest flights were canceled over the weekend. kris sanchez is live at the airport with a look at what folks can expect today. i know there was a lot of frustration out there. >> reporter: southwest blamed weather issues and also staffing issues, but travel experts say there's more to the story and that could spill in to today as people try and get where they are supposed to go. here's what happened at the bay area airports. in san jose alone there was 61 cancelations on saturday, and then oakland 74 cancelations. we met up with travelers here, and southwest said the chaos was triggered by weather and air traffic control issues in florida, and that trickled over starting friday evening, but not all travelers are buying that

explanation. >> what was confusing to me if it's weather related why are all the other airlines operating. so it just seemed like a mess. >> they said don't try and rebook it because it will be wednesday before you can, you know, get to your destination. >> so both southwest and the southwest pilots association debunked rumors that pilots called in sick to protest the mandatory covid vaccination effort, however we can report on friday a union for southwest 9,000 pilots asked a federal court intervened until a lawsuit is settled related to the mandated vaccine. at this point we did check in with the staff here at mineta san jose, and they say it's too early to tell if there will be more fallout today and maybe around 7:00 they will have a better idea of how the day is going to look. if you are traveling southwest

because of the high fire danger. a chilly start to our morning and all clear, and the winds will continue to pick up the day as we head towards the upper 60s. we'll look at our microclimates and details on the red flag warning coming up in a few minutes. traffic across the golden gate bridge. you can see the lights all the way across, and that's a great morning view. we'll talk about the wind. the justice department has until tomorrow to respond to an emergency motion in texas. for two days last week the abortion ban was lifted on. on friday an appeals court issued the stay. the biden administration is arguing it goes against roe v. wade. governor newsom over the weekend signed several new bills into law. here are a few. >> banning the sale of new gas

powered leaf blowers, lawn mowers and other small off brand engines. the law begins in 2024. another requires a gender-neutral section that displays the sale of toys, and the governor also vetoed bills. he also said that no bill that would have decriminalized jaywalking, and one that would have allowed bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs. and then a state agency providing assistance says the last week of september more than 40,000 people applied for help. that was a one-week record. typically up to 4,000 people every day seek assistance. the assistance is just shy of $12,000. >> there may be people wondering

the red flag warning, and even in the valleys we could see wind gusts up to about 30 miles per hour. once again, the humidity plays a role in how fast these fires do spread. we're looking at relative humidity numbers in the teens during the middle of the afternoon today, especially for parts of the peninsula, santa cruz mountains and east bay hills, and this is where we are also going to have to watch the high wind gusts. at the same time, low humidity coming up to 50 and 60 miles per hour. normally during the overnight hours, the relative humidity numbers come up to 70, 80, 90%. look at dry it will be this time tomorrow morning. it's going to be critically dry go into tomorrow as well. take a look at the temperatures, though. we are not going to have a significant warm-up yet. we are looking at mid to upper 60s. low 70s for the inland east bay.

tonight chilly once again with most of us in the low 50s. take a look at santa rosa. we'll be at 45 degrees when you wake up tomorrow morning. 45 for morgan hill and san martin. we will start a warming trend shortly there after. look at gilroy, as we plan ahead for the weekend temperatures do spike on friday into saturday and then head back down for next week. so that's the extended forecast. as we take a look at the 7-day forecast for inland valleys, low 70s today and tomorrow. warmer on wednesday, but that's also as the winds start to calm down, and then we will see temperatures reach into the mid-80s by the end of the week. early next week, once again we will continue to cool off. take a look at the gusty winds, and san francisco really windy today. some of the gusts could reach 35 to 40 miles per hour, and then low 70s in the forecast for the end of the week.

mike gives a thumbs up even though it's windy across the bridges. >> yeah, starting with the san mateo bridge, because you talk about the wind and we typically think the san mateo bridge gets the warning for chp, and still have not gotten that. i am not saying don't be careful, because always be careful when you are driving. slowing in the east now, and that is cleared up. dumbarton bridge, no slowing yet. in san jose we still have the first slowing we typically see from 680 up to oakland road and that's sticking around for another 20 minutes or so and should be clear until 6:40 when there's a build. over there, the area, a smooth drive and we'll talk about that in a second. for the benicia bridge, the
