live. san francisco, marin counties, things have changed when it comes to wearing your mask. those mandates are case by case situation, right, bob. >> reporter: it does not apply to all indoor locations. you still have to wear a mask in restaurants, stores, schools if you are a student, places like that. but starting today marin and san francisco counties are easing mask mandates for other indoor location. take a look at your tv screen. you no longer have to wear a mask inside offices, gyms, college classes and religious gatherings as long as you are fully vaccinated and there are no more than 100 people inside, and also there must be proper ventilation, and no children under the age of 12 present since they are not eligible for the vaccine. contra costa county, by the way,

will adopt similar rules for its mask mandate come november 1st. health offices for many other counties, they must raefp the yellow tier and stay there for three weeks. covid hospitalizations must be low and stable as determined by the health officer, and 80% of the population must be fully populated. -- fully vaccinated. today an fda advisory panel begins debating over the covid booster shots for the johnson & johnson vaccine.

yesterday that approval for the moderna experts will also discuss whether mixing and matching the boosters. >> what we really want to have is a unified message for at-risk groups and the group i am most worried about is those 65 and older. >> the third shot will be a half dose. the fda notes without a booster, vaccines still afford protection against severe infection and death in the u.s. we know it can be hard to keep up with the changing vaccine and mask guidelines, so we made it easy for you. head over to nbcbayarea.com.

two different fires have firefighters rushing into action. the first fire broke out on eas several sheds on fire. the flames leapt spreading to at least one home and three inlaw units. at least five people are without a home right now. the cause of the fire is under investigation. less than two hours later crews were called to a home on clark johnson place. a fire started out of a two-story home. kris sanchez is heading to the scene of the fire and will join us with a live report coming up at 5:30. former president bill clinton in a southern california hospital this morning. he has been there since tuesday night, but they are just releasing details now.

former secretary of state and first lady, hillary clinton, there leaving the hospital in irvine. president clinton was hospitalized on tuesday in uc irvine. a spokesperson says it's noncovid related infection, and adds the former president is on the mend and said to be in good spirits. they hope to release the former president soon. happening now, the search continues for three people accused of stabbing a skateboarder wednesday night at putnam and oak park boulevard. the people in the car threw eggs at the skateboarders, and one of the skateboarder threw something back, and that's when the suspects got out of their car

and stabbed him several times. anybody with surveillance video that may have captured that is asked to call the police. the giants season is done. >> congrats to l.a. but we have a great team, and there's always next year. anthony flores is down for us. >> end. the giants lose to the dodgers in game five. logan webb gets a strikeout to end the third inning. down 1-0 in the sixth, ruff goes on a power trip.

at the top of the ninth, belanger with the biggest hit of the series, a single to right center, and justin turner scores. and then flores with a check swing called strike three by the first base umpire. that is not a strike, but that's the ball game. the dodgers beat the giants 2-1, and win the series three games to two, ending the giants' magical season. >> more hits than us, and players were in really good positions to succeed tonight and they did in many ways. this is baseball. it's what happens. >> something to really be proud of. obviously would have liked to win this game and then move on, but it was a great year all in all.

this is our temperatures that will be heading up. keep in that mind if you are heading out for more exercise in spots like redwood city. we will see temperatures in the 40s as you head out for the gym this morning, and then later it will become more unhealthy as the temperatures warm up in the 80s. san rafael with a high of 79 degrees. warmer tomorrow. i'll have a look at that in the forecast in a few minutes. mike, what is going on in the commute? >> folks, working a little late in fremont, just a couple minutes, and when i punched the clock, it's not enough to get another click, so sorry, guys. your drive coming in from the south county. no problems reported over the

happy friday morning. it's 5:14. as you are heading out we have cool temperatures. take a look at fairfield right now, 47 degrees. we will see those temperatures very chilly for the next three or four hours before it starts to warm up. even warmer this afternoon, and we'll talk about that. la nina has developed and i'll talk about what that means for our winter rainfall, coming up.

a smooth flow of traffic in oakland. picking up the volume a tad bit in the last couple of minutes. there's a situation where chp will issue an alert. we will talk about that, coming up. good morning and happy friday to you. in a few minutes we will get the latest data on consumer spending. what we do as consumers is the biggest factor in our economy. so you might think the higher levels of consumer spending is good, and sometimes they are, but as we get today's data we might be spending more to get less. things cost more. inflation will be a real factor in this number. the head of best buy was on the "today" show yesterday talking about how stores would have black friday sales earlier. this morning the team will help you find the best deal. often the lowest price on a

product isn't black friday. prices fluctuate and fall as the holidays get closer. however this year with shortages -- there it is, it's probably best to get everything done super, super early. the thing you will have the most problems finding is the sony play station 5. they sell out within minutes as they hit the shelves. sony said it will open up a registration page on its flight so you can reserve a console. shortages and demand make them hard to get. i'm operating on more coffee than usual, and i stayed out last night bay innovation awards. super fun recognizing all the amazing technology and

by sunday we will see the storm approaching, and it brings a lot of rain for northern california. as it moves into the bay area, the rain falls apart. we will see if we can get spotty showers around the coast, and we will have another round of the showers also looking to dry up as it arrives. we have the pacific warm blob out there, very warm temperatures out there further off towards the west. the storm track further to the north, and the climate prediction center saying la nina hasrived. what does mean? during el nino seasons, we have waters warmer than normal. so the sea surface temperatures now, it's cool, and what happens

is that drives the storm track further to the north and we miss out on the rain. the drought conditions we are seeing across the west right now is potentially what could continue as we head through the winter months, and that's not good for us. looks like this drought will continue to persist going into the winter with already the highest level of drought happening right here in the bay area, and much of california, at least much of california in a severe drought. we will have a couple shots of some showers passing by. san francisco may get a few sprinkles on sunday after we cool off and we will see more of the cool weather through next week. heading over to you, mike, what is going on now for the commute? >> santa rosa, southbound 101, there are reports of a traffic

forecast for you. meteorologist, kari hall, has a look at that. kari? >> yeah, we are starting out with chilly temperatures this morning. we have mid-40s as rosa as well as morgan hill. dublin right now, 47 degrees, and 47 in san jose. after the chilly start, as we look at our forecast for pleasant hill, we are going from a chilly morning where you are wearing a jacket heading out to go to work, and then we will see your temperatures heating up quickly. a lot of our inland valleys today reaching into the mid-80s. it's going to feel more like summer for today and tomorrow. then we do see some more changes with a big cooldown in the forecast by the end of the weekend. we will look at some events going on around the bay area, and help you make weekend plans and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. thank you very much, kari. breaking news we are following in the south bay, a very busy night for san jose firefighters. two house fires just a few miles

apart leaving a lot of people needing somewhere to live now. the good news, there's only one minor injury. >> firefighters, kris, do they tell you to move to a certain area? >> reporter: you know, they are getting ready to shift down the street is a little bit, and the fire has been put out safely, and the folks in the home will have to find someplace else to live. i want to show you a map to show you the perspective of where this fire happened. this is park johnson place and honolulu, and then some of the firefighters this morning were at a different fire on that map, and that was a three-alarm fire. the flames spread into the home where people were sleeping.

the battalion chief said everybody made it out safely, because there were smoke alarms. there were no fire-related injuries. >> there was the yelling and screaming in the front, and they told the occupant to the right to get out as well. >> reporter: firefighters were at this house fire near north white road hours before, and the fire started outside the home and a structure at the back of the property was on fire and it spread to the home. five people are out of their homes, including a child. they will be assisted by the red cross this morning. fortunately, though, no major

injuries in either of the incidents. kris sanchez for "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. while you were sleeping, district leaders approved the closure of two elementary schools. the earliest it will happen is next fall. enrollment dropped steadily over the past few years, and it will continue going forward. a south bay mother accused of controlling out of control parties for underaged student will be extradited. she would provide young teenagers alcohol until they were extremely drunk andcourage. she is expected to be arraigned

after her return. mcfarland, the man you see here, he was accused of stealing a car and then stabbing a man when he tried to steal the victim's phone in a parking lot, and then he stole another car and went to the same parking lot where he rammed a cyclists. officers arrested him a few miles away from there. we are being told that the victims, they are all expected to be okay. happening today, the fourth straight testimony in the holmes fraud trial. they used terms like magical and intriguing to describe the blood testing machines. legal analysts say there was

deeper perspectives offered. >> while, as i said, they may not be as cute as earlier once in the trial, and the more information we find outside from sources may shed light and reveal what the text messages meant. >> and a theranos lab director said he worked no more than ten hours total during the seven months he worked at theranos. scott budman has been covering this case from the very beginning. be sure and follow him on twitter. you can get updates from inside the courtroom room. it's 5:37. we are monitoring possible smoky

skies. the smoke is expected to drift into the bay area. meteorologist, kari hall, she is tracking the wind and has more on what we can expect. >> yeah, we will see some of the conditions for the weekend. maybe you are heading to the taste of the bay, and we are going to see a hazy sky in oakland tomorrow as our temperatures reach in the mid to upper 80s. i don't think for most people it will alter your weekend plans. also going on this weekend starting tonight, you might want to head out to queens pumpkin patch, and our temperatures will go from the mid-70s this morning to the low 80s, and this pumpkin patch is open until 9:00 p.m. the temperatures will be cool and probably very comfortable for the kids and the costumes. if you are planning to head to the beach this weekend, stinson beach will be in the mid-70s today and tomorrow. look at the changes on sunday. we are going from the mid-70s to

the upper 50s. we will have a cooldown up and down the coastline. i do think today and tomorrow will be the best days, and temperatures with more clouds moving in. if your weekend plans take you to l.a. this weekend, expect it to be in the low 80s today and mid-80s tomorrow and cooler sound. it does look to stay dry. hitting the road to south lake tahoe, it will be nice and the cooldown will be hitting the sierra as well. if you want to see fall colors, check out california fall color.com. this is a look at truckee. right now the bright fall foliage peaking at 6,500 feet, so tahoe, truckee, those areas will be beautiful this weekend. we will talk about the forecast as our temperatures cool off and some spots could see a little bit of spotty light showers. mike has a look at the morning commute. >> yeah, kari, we have one of the fall colors.

good friday morning. as you are heading out for the morning workout on the peninsula, we're checking out redwood city in the forecast, here in the upper 40s for the next couple hours, as we go into the late morning, a nice warm-up, and i would probably wait until 10:00 or 11:00 for warmer temperatures. we will talk about a warm-up and could see slight rain chances, coming up. and then just a little volume here. more activity on the east shore freeway, and that alert for the north bay. we'll check it out coming up. if you file for a tax extension, today is the deadline to file your 2020 state returns.

if you have not filed your returns, make sure to get them in to avoid any penalties. to to extending the thumbs down. president biden appointed a special commission to look into expanding the court because -- and this surprises a lot of people, because theany supreme court justices there should be. right now there are nine, six conservatives and three would think of as more liberal. congress could expand the number of judges and tip the balance of power towards liberals, and an early read of the first report shows the committee thinks expanding the court is a bad idea.

keep in mind the supreme court has a big credibility problem with many americans. the commission thinks messing around with the number of judges would make that worse. it does consider those lifetime appointments, pointing out america is, quote being the only major constitutional democracy in the world that has neither a retirement age or a fixed term of years in its high court justices. other news in the select committee on the january 6th attack said it will vote next week to hold bannon in criminal contempt if he doesn't respond to the subpoena. and we'll talk more about that. this is president trump testifying in a deposition in 2015. a federal court says he has to go back and do more depositions now that he's not president. this will happen on monday in a case involving assault by some

of his security guards on trump tower. we're watching andrew mccabe. he's the former deputy fbi director. he became the fbi director after trump fired the fbi director. a court decided mccabe should get his retirement back. trump fired mccabe only moments before he was to retire. >> thank you. look, i don't like to remind everyone this morning, but we all know the turn out of last night's game. giants' fans are feeling rather blue this morning, after a bad call at a bad time. the bad call will have fans wondering, what if forever.

many of the fans out right mad. the scene outside the stadium got tense and violent in some cases. this is video from a hotel across the street aft will freee the video for you at this point, because our crew says a giants' fan kicked a dodgers fan in the head. that video later shows somebody in handcuffs, but police are not giving up information about that. we'll keep monitoring that. the bay area team is helping to fight climate change in a eip designed to determine healthy air quality in specific locations. it compares indoor and outdoor air quality sensors. can you download the app in the apple app store.

wow, eighth grade. >> eighth grade? >> our producer, cat, she says she did download the app, and i don't know how many fumes she admits. >> the air quality that we have had in the bay area with the fires and concerns, peoples' health and kids going outside and the elderly, so wow, making a difference. >> he could become part of the weather team. >> one to watch, certainly. >> absolutely. yeah, and it's so localized, too. in some parts of the bay area, the air quality is fine and then you move over where a short distance away and the air quality is unhealthy to breathe. that will be cool and maybe we will be checking that out because we will see some of the smoke coming in today, mainly from southern california. we are watching the alisal fire, and now the smoke will be coming up the coast in mainly parts of the south bay and east bay. doesn't reach the north bay,

just the ocean breeze kicking the smoke off to the east. as we see the high pressure here, it will push down some of the air and keeping it from mixing in parts of the south bay. we will see 80s in parts of the east bay. we could see 70s for half moon bay, and san francisco will be in the upper 70s downtown. for the north bay, we will be up to 85 in novato, and 84 today in ukiah. a lot of changes here as we go through the forecast. looking ahead, we will have warm temperatures today and tomorrow, but then a cold front moving in on sunday. it does look to bring in rain across parts of northern california. may also make it into the north bay and along the coast. much of the bay area, may not see any of the showers. another system pushing in behind that for the middle of next

week, and we'll bring in cooler temperatures, but not much in the way of rain. we officially have the word of la nina has developed. this is a look at what is going on here. we have the pacific blob that we talk about, that warm area of sea surface, and that's in parts of the northern pacific. for the storm track, it gets driven further to the north, and we miss out. la nina means there's cooler than normal water in the pacific, and that could drive the storm track north and that's not good for us. it has an impact on how the weather flows around the earth and for us a lot of times we miss out on the rain, as once again, the storm track goes further to the north. we already expansive drought across the west. the driest conditions we have seen in nearly 50 years, here happening now and to hear that

la nina is developing and that will most likely continue our drought go into the next few months, as, of course, it's not good news for us. at least we will see a cooldown and hopefully can put an end to the fire season with more rain chances coming in further to the north. for livermore, our temperatures go from the low to mid-80s for the next couple of days, to a sharp drop off between sunday and monday, and we will see highs in the mid-60s and cool and breezy weather go into much of next week. looking at our inland temperatures in our forecast, we have low 80s for today. mid-80s tomorrow. maybe that last trip to the beach or a dip in the pool, because it looks like once we get the cooler weather coming in, it will be staying for much of the rest of next week, and maybe even next weekend. we will be watching that. mike, you were watching breaking news. is that still going on? >> still going on in the north bay. not a major concern for the rest of the commute, but for the

south commute, a crash on 87 around capital expressway. i will get details once chp arrives, and i will let you know if that becomes a problem. up in the north bay, this is what kari was referring to, we see slowing sensors, and only one lane, the middle lane getting by. the off-ramp was still closed, and it was going to take another 15 or 20 minutes until a tow truck could get there and clear a couple vehicles. you will move back off of southbound 101, and then take the exit if you need to, use golf course drive up there. a little slowing at the bay bridge incline here. the toll plaza has no backup,
