a new round of rain is rolling through the bay area. we'll have live team coverage. plus maybe a little bit of closure for the family of gabby petito. the remains found in the park are those of brian laundrie. what an attorney for the family is saying this morning. and rask restrictions are loosening in one county. this is today in the bay. good morning, and it feels good to be friday even if this is friday. i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm cierra johnson. the rain has been coming down over the last few hours.

>> we have live team coverage as the storm continues. we want to get to meteorologist vianey arana. >> we have plenty of rain pushing through the bay area. here's a closer look at what we're monitoring. this is the second storm of the three we have been monitoring. i want to use our mobile storm ranger because it gets down closer to street level. you can see san francisco just got a couple pockets. oakland seeing some of that rain. and you can see some of the yellow and orange glow, we're seeing some of the moderate to heavy at times rainfall. so san mateo getting some of that rain. and then around the coastline, expect to keep that rain for the next several hours. if you're wondering what about the south bay? look what's going on here. we have it inching in closer into mountain view. san jose is on deck. along with thefree mopt mont area. and also the mountains as well, we're seeing the rain start to push in which means a dangerous

commute along highway 17. we'll keep the rain in the forecast for the first half of the morning. then we'll get just a little bit of an afternoon break. daytime highs in the 60s. and we're going to keep some of the winds as well. but we have another storm on the way. so this is still number two. i'll talk about what we can expect for storm number three coming up. let's see how the roads are doing. >> looking over here at the richmond bridge. we're paying attention to the wet roads. traffic brings higher speeds because the roads are clear. be careful. look at all this radar activity. it's tough to see the roadways, but i wanted to show you the bay bridge. we had the camera pushing over into walnut creek. green highlighting where the radar. that's where the rain still is on the roadway. commute gets started across the bridges

now pushing over this area. and where the rain has been there for awhile over the coast, we have the blue showing up with the ponding and the puddling. no flooded roads yet, but watch the usual suspect ises. probable going to be an issue for highway 87 in the north bay. probably an issue as folks are getting down to the county. here's the bay bridge, lighter traffic, but lots of water on the roadway. and hitting your windshield no matter how light the rain is, you want the wipers in good condition. make sure they are that way before you hit the road. >> the you can see the flag there it is whipping in the wind. and those drops are all over the lens this morning. the rain is really coming down. and the farther north you go this morning, the more likely you are to feel the impact of that storm. heading into the bay is live. we know there's some trouble spot there is. >> just as you started saying that, it started raining a

little bit. we're right by the creek. and people here know something about flooding because they have had to deal with a couple times over the past several years. no threat of that this morning. this would have to happen for several days for that to happen. the creek just is at two feet. it would have to go over 13.3 feet to start flooding. but there's dangersen the roadways. i shot some dash cam video as i was coming in. highway 37 was really raining heavy at times. and water was pooling up in some areas. same on highway 101 coming into san raphael this morning. water pooling there in areas. so watch for the hydroplaning. keep the speeds down. heavy rain in had the valley also this morning. pg&e is also warning people there could be weather-related outages this morning. we know there's one very close

to where we are. and that one about 547 customers. pg&e has a crew on the way to assess the outage. new video just into the newsroom of a flooded ramp on 280. this is in daly city. you can see cars going through it really sending the rooster tails up into the air. a latest reminder to drivers as you get ready it lee the house, be careful out there. the public works department is providing free sandbags to anyone who needs them. it's happening today and tomorrow, first come first serve at the entrance to prince park. you're encouraged to bring your own shovel. fire station 55 on point san pedro road and the menz it ies

parking lot on mission avenue. you can track the storm on your phone. download the bay area app. one of the things you can access is the radar. you can zoom into your exact neighborhood and get a precise timeline on when the rain will it had. it's a great tool to plan your day or night. new details on the story that gripped the nation. the fbi says that the human remains found in a florida nature preserve are those of brian laundrie. the 23-year-old man was the person of interest, the only person of interest in the disappearance and death of his fiance gabby petito. sam brock has the details. >> reporter: good morning from florida. a nearly six-week manhunt has finally ended. the fbi announcing that it was brian laundrie. this coming as they had to deliver the news to his parents in the house over my shoulder. it was an exchange that lasted about 40 seconds and then they

it left and many lives changed forever after that. the attorney for the family discussing this morning concerns about what those parents did and did not know during this process and who they spoke with. here's what he told us. >> the reason you haven't heard from the laundries is i told them not to talk to anybody. i accepted the heat on. this is the role of a defense attorney. you tell your client do not talk to law enforcement. period,ened of story. >> reporter: there's still many questions that remain unanswered this morning, especially since the fbi and local police have not taken any from reporters. will there be charges for the laundrie family. they were asked that question. that story coming up on "today." back to you. >> we'll be watching. thank you. developing this morning, a decorated former police officer is in serious but stable condition after this deadly shootout at a gas station. it was all captured on surveillance video. the incident started as an armed

robbery. >> the bay area obtained exclusive video of the shooting which police could not verify. it shows three men approach the former police officer as he pumps gas. he pulls a gun and fired at one of the attackers who later died. when joiner continued a after the other attackers, he was shot multiple times. here's the chief. >> we know that they intended to focus on the victim in this case and the video has been clear and helpful for nus this investigation so far. >> joiner retired in 2019. he now co-owns an oakland marijuana dispensary. moving you forward, mask restrictions are starting to loosen up and health leaders yesterday a&ed the order to allow indoor mask rules to be lifted if everyone is fully

vaccinated similar to other counties. it can include places like gyms, classes and offices and mask rule cans remain in place for establishments that prefer to have them in place. they have announced similar changes as well. reportedly the latest city to consider making a standard outdoor dining a perm innocent thing. the program started at the height of the pandemic last year. and the report city leaders are working on drafting permanent rules. taking a look at 5:09 at the richmond bridge. we have been seeing the slick roads and headlights illuminated with the camera. it's going to be a wet day. >> let me give you some relief in sight. it's going to be a wet commute this morning, but we get a break from the big rainfall. at least into the weekend. let's go through storm ranger.

i want to talk about how this is starting to make its move. south bay was on deck. get prepared for that. you'll see some of the rain push through the area. mountain view seeing some of that rain. and we have bigger pockets moving into the area. forecasted highs will be in the 60s. we have morning rain and then it moves out right around your lunch hour. it's not going to be rainy all day long. and look at that. we get all this room for activity. as we get into saturday, a couple scattered showers and then the big storm moves into sunday night. >> checking this camera, we did see some droplets on ts lens, but not a big deal.

good morning, it's 5:14. if this is a part of your morning commute, between now and 8:00 a.m., expect a wet commute. we're going to keep the rain in the forecast for the first half of our morning. then we'll get a break into the afternoon. but we are seeing downpours at time. i'll talk about that in a few minutes. we showed you what it looked like. soupy conditions here. a spin out and solo car crashes reported around the maize. mostly off the shoulder. we'll talk about the impact on your bigger drive, coming up. as we are looking at your money maybe, here's what you can expect for today. wall street is set for a mixed open following some

disappointing tech earnings after the close yesterday. during the regular session, the s&p 500 managed to eke out a new record high-rising for the 7th straight session. the dow, nasdaq and s&p are on track for three straight week of gains. facebook is struggling to count its exact numbers of users. facebook found between one-third uncertainty could impact the reliability of information facebook shares with advertisers. facebook bans people from having several personal accounts, but the big reason they do so maybe because they get locked out of their main account. we're not going to fire anybody. that's the message from southwest airlines and american airlines. those ceos are softening their tone as federal vaccine mandate approaches. the biden administration is requiring federal contractors including airlines to ensure their it staff are vaccinated.

southwest and american are now urging staff who don't plan to get vaccinated to apply for an exemption. this follows protest that each headquarters this month. united said 600 of its employees face termination due to their lack of vaccination. it's not clear how many southwest and american employees remain unvaccinated. walmart says customers at more u.s. stores will be able to buy bitcoin using an atm-like kiosk. coin star partnered with a digital exchange to alu bitcoin purchases and there are 200 kiosks inside walmart stores with plans for up to 8,000 across the country. i did think it was curious. it looks like the supply chain grinch will not be stealing christmas. the toy maker is raising sales forecast ahead of the holiday season saying the full

production forward krgted more cargo ships in order to keep up with supply during the industry's most critical time of the year. so keep your list going. rain or shine, the much anticipated county fair is about to open its doors. the fair begins at 11:00 this morning at the fairgrounds in pleasantton. it will run until halloween or so. now easily this might feel weird. despite the weekend storms, fair organizers plan to roll with it and make whatever adjustments are needed. some activities and exhibits will also be held inside. i love a good funnel cake. >> i was just going to say that. rain or shine. >> we talk about food all morning. >> that's fair. that's what fairs are for.

with all this rain we're seeing now, the good news by 11:00, we'll start to see some of the light rain and push out. san francisco we're seeing some of the rain on our camera. and storm ranger has been working hard. you can see a lot of the rain up to richmond, san francisco, oakland and it's really just starting to become more widespread. south san francisco, half-moon bay, that's where the rain is stronger. mountain view, here we go. starting to move into san jose now. you can see it right here. we'll get pockets at times. it's going to be light to moderate. we saw the rain now it's starting to move further inland. ask this is expected to remain for the first half of your morning.

58 degrees in san jose. 63 in san francisco. and i want to show you the hour by hour outlook. it you notice the time stamp, 8:0, notice how you're going to be traveling through sacramento. but there it is. into friday afternoon, early saturday morning, we get the break from the rain. and then into saturday, we'll get a couple scattered showers ahead of the third storm. so just sol light instability and then the big storm is going to push in on saturday night, overnight into early saturday. and then take a look at this. highest total still expected for the coastal mountains and the north bay. we're still expected to see some of the rain valleys, but we bumped up some of the rain totals. some of the higher elevations, maybe 6 inches of rain. and a couple snow

expected into monday. this is the last time we saw this it amount of rain, it was january. so this is why we're definitely looking forward to the snow again. the biggest impact in addition to the sfoe sno is also gusty winds. we'll also see gusty winds here. travel conditions will be dangerous sunday into monday. especially and then the rain will linger tuesday to wednesday. we'll get a chance of possible thunderstorm activity depending on how this atmospheric river pulls through. low 60s into the weekend. and really just going to be one of those weekends we're monitoring our river levels. so it's going to be wet for sure. mike, how are the roads? >> wet for sure. we'll go become to the golden gate bridge. the rain is actively falling on the lens. and also notice we move this it divide and have gotten rid of

bay area residents share their struggles of trying to get their money back. >> the team answered those calls for help and he joins us with some recent wins. >> there's no shortage of people requesting our help. 1883 so far this year. he says a neighborhood power surge damaged his computer. alex asked the power company and the cable company to reimburse him, but they blamed each other and wouldn't pay. so alex called us. the cable company stood firm, but the power company gave a good will gesture and he took it. larry in san jose needed the full-court press with a sports ticket broker. he paid $368 to go to an nba basketball game, but larry says the broker didn't send the tukts or refund despite a guarantee. he contacted us. we contacted the company.

officially eligible to get the extra shot of protection. we have details on the el know if you qualify you're watching today in the bay. good morning, i'm christie smith. . >> let's get to our top story. it's that rain. we have team coverage on everything you need to know as you prepare to head out this morning. our bob redell is tracking showers in the east bay. they just rolled in. it will have an impact on the roads. but first we start with vianey arana who is setting the stage for the whole thing. >> you want to show you this shot of san jose. it's still pretty dry in it downtown. but the radar is showing that rain starting to make its move into the south bay. so expect to see that. san francisco still sees a light shower. san mateo light rain through

there. then some areas of yellow, that's some areas where you're driving and the rain is coming down. it feels like it's harder. that's what it is. so here we go. down through the malibu area, m. we are expecting this to linger through the first half of the morning. santa cruz as well 37 the main reason we're under a weather alert, no wind advisories or warnings, but it's impacting your morning commute. keep in mind we'll be seeing this sort of intensify a little bit into the next half hour or so for the south bay. if you're heading out now, you definitely want to hit the roads. i also want to talk about your forecasted highs for this afternoon. you're not going to need a heavy coat it's pretty comfortable. but it might feel sticky because of the moisture. temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s for the valleys. and then we do get an afternoon break. this is when i plan on running all of my errands.

this is when there's no rain. so he has been very fortunate because of that. in the south bay, he likes the rain shadow. we need the rain. >> so does my dog. he may have to hold it saturday into sunday. we'll see. san mateo bridge is getting more rain over from the peninsula side to hayward. looking for the storm. it looked like flashing lights, but a little refraction. chokes chess check that. we're looking at water on the roadways. hitting the bridge, we just took a look. but that will affect the 101 and 237. we saw another crash. over here the bay bridge continued. this area we focus in with a lot of rain. crash 580 clear to the shoulder.

>> you can see from the roadways are soaked here. you can see from the cameras all around the bay area. the rain is really coming down all just about everywhere. the rain coming down for most of the bay area right now. >> bob redell is live in dublin. good morning. >> good morning to you. we started out getting this band of rain within the past hour. and i can tell you, it's quite refresh lg to see more than just a drizzle like we have seen. we need the rain. i know my trees and my bushes in my yard need it. this is video we did send in about 15 minutes ago when it was coming down more. it's quite gusty out here. a little cool. i don't think it's enough that the roads are flooding but we believe this will probably peak.

speak of the morning commute, we're looking east. as you can see the lights there are the headlights on your morning commute. so as you're heading in today, a couple things to keep in mind. this is our first big rain we have had in quite awhile. but when you had the big first rains, all the oils and liquids that have been settling on the roadways during our dry months are going to percolate and come up and make the roads slick. they would ri mind you when you're drive itting in the rain, keep distance between you and the car in front of you. if the speed limit says 65, it means 65 as conditions permit. these might not be conditions for 65 miles an hour. so you might want to keep that in mind as you're heading into the morning commute. reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you, bob. bob showed you his picture. we want to see the rain where

death. with a lot of disease out there, we're still representing prevention measures and will continue to follow the data that it demonstrates if and when there's waning for people that are generally healthy. >> you can catch that interview right after today in the bay. developing this morning, a really bizarre story out of new mexico trying to unravel what went wrong on the set of a movie and the shooting involving alec baldwin. >> baldwin fired a prop gun that discharged either a bullet or shrapnel. two people were struck. one 42-year-old died. this happened on the set of a western called "rust". production is now halted. >> the other victim was the director of the film. this is his page. we learned that he's now out of the hospital. he's from the bay area and has a home in fremont. right now, no charges have been filed. deties say the investigation is

ongoing. testimony resumes later this it morning in the elizabeth holmes criminal fraud trial. evidence this week is focused on the relationship she tried to built with entities including the u.s. military. a former project manager testify ed they tried to make the machines operational on the battle lines, but he left there because he says he knew technology would never work. now to a live look at sfo this morning. travelers remain stranded after flight cancellations. regional carrier sky west reported 700 cancellations nationwide over technical issues. it provides shuttle service ises for other airlines. check out this line last night. i believe we have video. united customers there at the service desk at sfo. you can see dozens of folks lined up waiting to get rebooked the issue has been resolved, but cancellations will continue into this morning.

and sunday we are expecting rain. now the stadium is in santa clara county, which is typically where the rain shadow falls. we usually say that, but even on sunday, still expecting to see some rain there. weekend forecast let's talk about some of the locations that we're going to be monitoring. san francisco, saturday, look at the temperatures in the 60s again. sunday into monday, we're going to really just see that heavy rain. saturday there could be periods of time of isolated showers here and there. but it's not going to be as strong as what we're expecting on sunday. same goes for napa. however, areas in the north bay are likely to see some of the stronger storms even in through tonight and also into early saturday morning as well. you can see we get a little break. friday night, then we get more rain into early saturday. and then the southlake tahoe commuters, i really the to make sure you guys check those travel conditions. you might end up needing chains. this is probably a high chance

of a winter weather advisory. we're talking about two feet of snow. it's going to be really gusty. if you have never traveled, they have a ton of narrow roads. night travel definitely not something you want to do. big sur. not a good weekend for the beach. we are going to be seeing those cloudy conditions, but into this afternoon, it might feel kind of fresh to go out to the coastline and get a nice run in. and just a little bit of a rain outlook. we're looking a at for sunday. this is an atmospheric river reason and could be seeing a little over half an inch to three inches of rain or more for the higher elevation areas. so far, how are the roads doing? >> they are wet. that's an issue. overall, the radar activity i stole your radar and put it on my map. we share the same systems and

have the same information and compliment each other. we just got the update. rain is still westbounds at rain came through. direction. highway 37, perhaps a lot of rain going on there. no flooding reported for that part of the north bay just yet. the bay bridge, we my may have a disabled vehicle. and a bridge crew to get over there and get an update, but there's not a lot of slowing except on the incline. a number of incidents mostly spin-ups and single car crashes mostly over to the shoulder. this one at lake shore did have activity. 24 there's flooding as well as a crash reported around the 24 or 15 interchange. that one was calling out a spinout in that area as well. watch for the wet roads. everywhere it's green, which is pretty much everywhere on the map except for the southern

the largest drop was among african-american women. in that subset, younger women were most likely to miss their it screenings during the first stay at home order. women over 70 were most likely during the second stay at home order. the study's author says we still don't know the full impact of that. >> that's something that we're definitely worried about as a cancer doctor community and oncology community of whether we're going to see patients coming in with larger tumors or tumors that have spread to other places because screening tests were lost. it is too soon to really know that. >> the american cancer society recommends women age 40 to 44 get an annual breast cancer screening. women 45 to 50 should get an annual mammogram. and 55 and older should get one one to two years. sglrchlgts new signs of hope for the monarch butterfly sanctuary

francisco, san mateo, seeing a couple pockets of light to moderate rain. and then i'm going to push this further down to the south bay. mountain view, san jose, light rain coming down through there. and in through the santa cruz mountains. we are going to see the majority of this rain start to move out. we're not worried about any flash flood watches here locally. however, there's a flash flood watch in effect for the far northern area near the reading zone. you can see the green highlighted area here. this is a reminder now. it's not local here. this is expected to remain in effect through the next couple hours or so. but there are concerns for a couple watches and warnings as we head in towards sunday. so locally here. forecasted highs for this afternoon, 68 degrees in san jose. liver more at 67. we're going to get the break from the rain tonight and tomorrow. ask then this is the big storm heading into sunday.

but sunday anywhere to possibly 3 inches of rain for the north bay and also to the coastal mountains. and this is the most we have seen since january 2021. in addition, look what's happening here the blue on the map and the pink is sierra snow. so as it makes its entrance, we're expecting gusty winds, especially late sunday into early monday. so sierra snow, we could see the potential of up to two feet of snow for the sierra. this is fantastic news for the snow pack, which was quickly depleted after a very warm june and july and a dry rain outlook last year. so inland, seven-day forecast, we have 60s. this isn't going to put a huge dent in the drought, but it's easing the wildfire concerns. so san francisco, sunday, monday, 60s.

months. investigators have revealed what killed a family that died in august in a remote hiking trail in the sierra. deputies say heat exhaustion and dehydration led to the death of the family. the family recently moved to the area from san francisco. that day the temperature reached 109 on that hiking trail. new video relegal leasted shows the steep terrain where they were found. >> it should be noted when they were it located and through our investigation, there was one 85-ounce water bladder backpack located with the family. this water bladder was empty and no other water containers, no other water filtration it systems were located amongst the family. >> the sheriffs department ruled out any causes like foul play or high levels of toxic algae.

there's new rules for workers at apple. bloom berk is reported unvaccinated staffers have to undergo daily testing in order to enter the office. now the daily tests will also apply to employees who refuse to disclose their vaccination status. the new rules also require vaccinated workers to get tested weekly. at apple retail stores, unvaccinated workers must get tested twice a week and vaccinated workers once a week. the new regulations are a bit more lenient than other bay area tech companies. google and facebook require in-person workers to be vaccinated. the new requirements start november 1st. be ready to change how you shop for thanksgiving this year. the supply chain shortage is prompting some companies to limit some items. the supply issues have caused aluminum prices to skyrocket 40% meaning canned goods could cost more. and costco is bringing back
