vianey arana. >> everyone is sleeping but us. our lovely viewers tuned in. satellite radar you can see we have plenty of rain starting to push through and we're going to continue to see this over the next couple hours. the main impact will be right during the morning show. so right until 7:30. so storm ranger you have a little bit of rain pushing in through oakland and san francisco. some of the-ier rain is around a the coastline and the interior valleys. liver more, just a couple more areas. so is light to moderate at times. so your early morning commute is going to be impacted when it comes to the roadways. but also we're starting to see some rain push in. keep that in mind. as far as any flash flood watches, we have one that is really far up north near the reading area. no watches or warnings here locally, but we'll be monitoring that for sunday is. because there will be several

advisories going into effect as that third storm system makes its way in it. mike, how is everyone doing on the roads? >> making their way into san francisco right now. the backup at the toll plaza, we don't always see this on a friday. i think the metering lights are slower because conditions like yesterday and the day before. we're watching the span itself. just wet roads. that's when we deal with slicker conditions. the radar pushes over to highway 24. i think these maybe clear but still on the report. this west 580 approaching, there's still a crash and activity and slowing for that portion of oakland. the radar you still see the green. that means it's still wet. some slowing at the high-rise. we'll check that out. smaller incidents, but wet roadways throughout the south bay. back over to you.

from the rain on the map to rain irl, the rain really coming down in the bay area this morning. and it really doesn't seem to be much dry pavement anywhere. >> that means dangerous driving conditions for the morning commute. bob redell is live. what are you seeing? >> reporter: we're definitely getting rained on. it's cool out. we have been getting dumped on for the past hour. you can see a sense of how gusty it is out here. then this is some video from earlier when the rain started coming down. i would say a decent downpour. like i said earlier, it's great to see this because we certainly need this. and we are getting it and hopefully we'll get enough to at least start seeing some saturation in the ground.

this is video into the newsroom in the past hour. this is from across the bay. you're looking at flooding on highway 280. this is in daly city. and you can see the flooding is so bad there was a car stalled in that area. so if you're driving in that area, with know the areas that typically flood during the heavy rainfall. this is something to keep an eye on. i want to come back out live and look east. you'll elect a half hour ago, we were able to see the headlights on westbound 580. you can't see them as well now. an indication we're getting more rain and it's clouding our view. we are not kpting there to be much flooding on the roadways. but they are going to be slick because a lot of the oils and liquids have been sitting on the roads for the past several months. so keep that in mind.

called the only person of interest in the death of his fiance gabby petito. sam brock is in florida with the details. >> reporter: good morning from florida. a nearly six-week manhunt has finally ended. the fbi announcing that it was brian laundrie. this coming as they had to deliver the news to his parents in the house over my shoulder. it was an exchange that lasted about 40 seconds and then they it left and many lives changed forever after that. the attorney for the family discussing this morning concerns about what those parents did and did not know during this process and who they spoke with. here's what he told us. >> the reason you haven't heard from the laundries is i told them not to talk to anybody. i accepted the heat on that. this is the role of a defense attorney. you tell your client do not talk to law enforcement. period,ened of story. >> reporter: there's still many questions that remain unanswered this morning, especially since

the fbi and local police have not taken any from reporters. will there be charges for the laundrie family. they were asked that question. that story coming up on "today." back to you. >> we'll be watching. thank you. developing this morning, a decorated former police officer is in serious but stable condition after this deadly shootout at a gas station. it was all captured on surveillance video. the incident started as an armed robbery. >> the bay area obtained exclusive video of the shooting which police could not verify. it shows three men approach the former police officer as he pumps gas. he pulls a gun and fired at one of the attackers who later died. when joiner continued a after the other attackers, he was shot multiple times. here's the chief.

>> we know that they intended to focus on the victim in this case and the video has been clear and helpful for nus this investigation so far. >> joiner retired in 2019. he now co-owns an oakland marijuana dispensary. moving you forward, mask restrictions are starting to loosen up and health leaders yesterday a&ed the order to allow indoor mask rules to be lifted if everyone is fully vaccinated similar to other counties. it can include places like gyms, classes and offices and mask rule cans remain in place for establishments that prefer to have them in place. they have announced similar changes as well. reportedly the latest city to consider making a standard outdine door dining a permanent thing. the program started at the height of the pandemic last year. and the report city leaders are working on drafting permanent rules. let's take you live outside

this morning. you're looking ats the wet roads on the morning. rain has been pouring down overnight in part of the bay area. mike is keeping a close look on the roads. let's start with meet meteorologist vianey arana. >> this is it the second storm. we'll take any accumulation we can get. we're expecting about a quarter to a little over that under ab inch through the north bay from this second storm. storm ranger, you can see the radar there. starting to see some of the rain push out, but we have more behind it there. in through liver more, danville, on deck to get some of that rain pushing in. we're going to keep that rain through the first half of our morning. so by 8:00, we'll see the band start to make its exit. by 12:00, we'll get the partly

cloudy skies. 67 degrees, oakland at 64. san jose at 68. san francisco at 63. it is a little breezy, especially around the coastline. and i'm going to talk about the timing as far as our break goes into today and what to expect for saturday. and then the big storm heading into sunday. mike, how are the roads doing? >> take a look at this shot from palo alto. a live look shows the blurry look from our camera there on 101. the university there, just hitting the lens and enhancing the blur. but that will be the same for your windshield. make sure they are in good condition. look at this. a lot more radar activity down for the south bay. that will be a factor. all that rain causing puddling and ponding for the windy roadways. watch out.

it starts at 11:00 this morning and runs until hal wean. usually it's held in the middle of summer, but despite the weekend storms, fair organizers plan to roll with it and make whatever adjustments are needed. some activities are happening indoors or in covered areas. >> usually you're sweating so hard at the fair when it happens in the summer. i kind of like this fall vibe. >> all the fall activities. especially stuff indoors. >> we're going to be hoping folks find the indoor activities. >> maybe a little shower activity, but it depends on where you live. but today, the big story and the reason why we're under the weather alert is that system falls right in time for when you have to head to work. we're here to get you covered. so san jose, i want to show you downtown. we're starting to see the sheen on the roadways in downtown san jose. and as you know, the south bay tends to fall in that rain

shadow. we're seeing some light rain. you can see the big emphasis. f. but we are getting just enough to where we're getting to see maybe a little under an inch for the north bay. so san francisco right now has another rain band starting to move through. we're starting to get some of the rain push through there as well and down through the south bay, there's the rain. you can see the heavier rain more along the coast. by the afternoon, we'll see a little bit of cloudy conditions, but some sunshine. temperatures will be comfortable in the 60s. if you didn't get a chance to get your tires checks, we had light rain. please do it today because

looking ahead, we're going get a break. this is two of three storms and then saturday afternoon we get some light showers and this is the rain outlook for that atmospheric river event heading into sunday with some of the highest totals for the coastal mountains and the north bay. we're also expected to see snow. rain shadow in some of the interior valleys, but we're going to get a good all the of rain through the south bay as well. some of those rain shadowed areas. this is gusty. a rainfall total. these are being a bit generous for the south bay. not taking into account rain shadow, but look at this. when you look at the colors here, just a little over an inch. it's monitoring the burns from

previous fires for potential for debris flow. no concern for the rivers right now, but could be some street flooding because any time we see an atmospheric river, we get a ton of water all at once. remember that yesterday, that's a great little short way to explain it. at least the southern end of it. we're going to keep the rain in the forecast. especially heading in towards the coastline and again those coastal mountains. but we have you covered here. i know who has you covered on traffic. mike inouye. >> surface streets likely blocked drains. a lot of debris. keep that in mind there will be standing water. you see standing water, find a way around it. we have water on the people.

this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez. >> let's get right to our top story. our microclimate weather alert. the storm is here. we have seen the bay area get soaked. >> we have team coverage this morning. we are live in the north bay. we are watching the dangerous road conditions with mike. but first, we want to start with meteorologist vianey arana and, boy, it's been a whopper of a wet morning. >> it has. we definitely see some of that trek east. we're expecting for it to sort of start to lessen in terms of intensity. so a live look. i want to show you satellite radar. san francisco seeing a little bit of a break. using the storm ranger, a couple light showers through oakland if i zoom in. now liverpool is getting rain. fremont still getting a little bit of that rain. i'm going to push this further down south.

but as we head in towards the 8:00 hour, that's going to continue to move out east. and we'll get an afternoon break. temperatures will be in the 60s. i still want you to carry the umbrella if you live north of the golden gate bridge. there's a higher chance of seeing isolated showers. also around the coastline and in the city as well. so 60 degrees in san jose. maybe even a couple low 70s. and then the next chance of rain moves in heading into the weekend. i have you covered on that. just like mike as you corred on the roads. >> we showed the radar having pushed through. this camera stops seeing the active rain, but you still see the wet roadways. it's tougher of to see, but you can see it on the southbound side. so there you go, slicker conditions and the radar shows a similar thing. we swipe the radar and put it over the traffic maps. there's the activity pushing past the area and also through the trivalley. green shows you slick roadways.

watch those areas. but so far, the main freeways are moving pretty smoothly. the commute is lighter today that rain traveled through that area. a smoother drive as the rain pushed through. slowing from pittsburgh towards concorde. the rets rest of the commute is starting to lighten up. but we still have blurry screens over here. back to you. >> thank you, mike. you can see from this it look over the transamerica building that the area is still sol soggy weather there. the flag is whipping and then the rain drops are accumulating. the farther north, the more likely you are to feel the impact of the storm. thom jensen is life. we know there are some typical trouble spot there is. >>. >> reporter: there can be for flooding. that's no threat this morning.

that would have to rain like it has been this morning for several days for that to happen. we have been monitoring some power outages here. one very nearby that affects about 550 customers. i just checked with pg&e on their website and that's been drown graded to 164 customers right now. and that was a weather-related outage. another one farther up the north bay that they are also working on one thing that we have noticed is on the roads. there have been really bad conditions this morning. as i was coming in across highway 37, the rain was extremely heavy. it was pooling. it was runningen the highway. so be careful with the hydroplaning. everybody was keeping their speeds down. the same on 101 southbound coming in. more heavy rain. the water pooling. and we saw the same thing in mill valley. heavy rain, water pooling up in

parking lots. so the one thing you do the to watch out for as you head out is the heavy rain. we're expecting more of the same through the commuting hours. we have bye-bye seeing that this morning. be careful and keep it down a little bit slower. however, we don't expect to see the flood danger. the creek here. it's only two feet. it would have to come up more than another 11 feet before there would be any flooding can be concerns here. we're live, thom jensen, today in the bay. >> that's good news. look at what happened on this ramp off of interstate 280. this is the exit in daly city. the car is going through those high waters sending those rooster tails up into the air.

so it is a reminder to drivers that as you get ready to leave your house, be careful out there. sometimes it's hard to tell how deep the water is. >> we want to see what the rain looks like in your neighborhood. this vid owe was shared in san jose. we'll put your photos on the air. now to breaking news, pfizer says its data supports authorizing its covid vaccine in children ages 5 to 11. the fda releasing the briefing document ahead of the scheduled meeting of fda advisers on tuesday. now pfizer says it's in its main clinical trial it appeared to be more than 90% effective against symptomatic covid-19. the f detectives a is preparing its own analysis likely to be released later today.

developing this morning, trying to unravel what went wrong on the set of a movie in new mexico and the deadly shooting involving actor alec baldwin. baldwin fired a prop gun that discharged either a bullet or shrapnel. two people were struck. one of them, a 42-year-old, died. it happened on the set of a western called "rust" being filmed in santa fe. production is now halted. the other victim is the director of the film. his page is here on the screen. he's from the bay area and has a home in fremont. right now, no charges have been filed. deputies say the investigation is ongoing. earlier this morning, testimony resumes in the elizabeth holmes criminal fraud trial. evidence has been focused in part on the relationship that she tried to build, which touted to other investors. a former project manager testified that the company was trying to make its blood testing

machine operational for use on the battle line, but he left because he says he knew the technology was never going to work. this is a live look at sfo where some travelers remain stranded due to some flight cancellations. now regional carrier sky west reported 700 cancellations nationwide over technical issues. they provide shuttle services for other airlines. check out this line last night at united's customer service desk. you can see that line with dozens of people lined up waiting to rebook. sky west says the issue has been resolved but cancellations will continue into this morning. let's take you to levi's stadium for a live look there. fans planning on attending the niners game this weekend better prepare for a wet and windy game. they will be tack taking object colts as they are trying to snap a losing streak. you are allowed to bring an

it's going to be a rainy one. a little brit of a break on sunday is, but then sunday and monday across the region, widespread rain. really heavy rain bands will push through into sunday. as far as napa valle than the r. and southbe folks who want to drive. your window of opportunity before the really heavy rain kicks in and the snow is going to be on saturday. and i don't even recommend night driving in general because the last couple storms we have seen have managed to drop some slick conditions out there and then the winds are going to pick up sunday into monday. so this is when we're expecting winter weather advisories. look at the lows dipping down into the 20s bringing us potential for maybe even two feet of snow. big sur, not a great weekend for big sur unless you like cloudy and cozy. 65 degrees on saturday.

with governor newsom. >> this is hard because i believe in redemption and second chances. he took away dreams. he took away hope. and this country, this world is radically changed as a consequence. >> watch the entire interview this weekend on "meet the press." it air this is sunday at 8:00 a.m. right after today in the bay. october is breast cancer awareness month and it's a good reminder for women over 40 to get a mammogram. a new study finds that screenings of san francisco general hospital dropped nearly 40% in 2020 compared to the year before. the largest drop was among african-american women. in that subset, younger women were most likely to miss their it screenings during the first stay at home order. women over 70 were most likely during the second stay at home order.

time, you know where they are it at. they are probably flooding this morning depending on the respective locations. back out here live. we're in dublin. we're on a hill overlooking the trivalley. we're looking towards the east you see the head lamps there. those are the cars heading west on 580. that's your friday morning commute. and we have been talking about this all morning long. this is our first big heavy rain of the season. so a lot of those oils that have been settling on the freeway, they are going to come to the surface and make your drive really slick and slippery. that's something you want to keep in mind. and watch your speed. that's the safest speed to drive as conditions perlt. they might not permit that. maybe 55 miles an hour. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell, today in the bay. >> shout out to bob.

>> he's standing in the rain for all of us. thanks for that. we're going to get a ton more rain into the weekend. but the last of this rain is going to start to taper off. especially lot valleys. look at this. we have a couple more pockets of rain starting to make their move into san francisco. so we're not in the clear just yet. same goes for liver more. light rain there at times through the south bay. south bay tends to fall. any time we get a little bit of rain, it's a welcome sight. afternoon breaks, so the heaviest part of the storm is happening right now. it will continue at least into the next hour or so. right around 8:30, 9:00 a.m. still remaining for the north bay. take a look at the hour by hour outlook. 10:00 a.m., we'll see the majority start trekking east. if you have plans to travel,

they'll see the gusty winds. a couple showers. by 12:00, lunch hour, we should be in the clear at least when it comes to the rain. we're going to get a break from that. peeks of sunshine at times. the beautiful skies and then saturday into saturday afternoon, we're going to get a couple areas of light rain here and there. a little bit of a break before we see the rain outlook heading into sunday. here it is. the atmospheric river event we have been following. the river of the sky. and that's basically when we get a tap of moisture that directs itself right in our location bringing us heavy rainfall amounts in a quick amount of time. expect gusty winds. it's going to start to rain pretty much as early as sunday morning, but it gets really heavy heading into the evening hours on sunday. and i know that niners game is an evening game. take the poncho. so plan for that. and monday, look at this.

tuesday, decent snow. we had a seriously depleted snow pack. and that lack of rainfall made a huge impact. but this rain has helped these wildfire concerns. then we'll keep the chance for tuesday. th temperatures in the 60s for san francisco. low 60s into the weekend. it's a rainy friday, but it's still a friday. >> that's it great news because we had 70 incidents i was tracking. i'll be very honest. i didn't look at every detail, but most of them are spinoutings going on. we have recovery over the san mateo bridge. it was almost completely stopped for a couple seconds here. but everything is moving once fwen. you see the slower drive. speeds are improving and pushing north. so we're watching that. wet roadways all over the bay. 880 a little slow. another crash just cleared just

appeared to be more than 90% effective against symptomatic covid. the fda is preparing its own analysis likely to be released later today. and the rain is really coming down in san francisco. and also farther up in the north bay this morning. this is a live look at the golden gate bridge. >> that's it right. we're in a weather alert this morning. today in the bay's thom jensen is live in one area where the rain has been coming down the hardest. what are the conditions look like right now? >> reporter: well, it's coming down moderately right now. not as heavy as it was when you came to us a little earlier. it's been on and off like this raining pretty heavy at times. and while there's no flood danger here, driving has been tricky across parts of the bay area coming across highway 37 across through sonoma county. water was building up on the

roads. there was dangers of hydroplaning. everybody sealed to be keeping their speeds down pretty well. we saw heavy rain at times in the water pooling up in parking lots. pooling up on roadways. and also some winds we saw some limbs down, but nothing major we heard about a couple power outages. one here that affected more than 500 people. pg&e has restored power to most of those. about 164 customers still without power. but the main thing you want to watch out for this morning is we do expect more rain over the next hour or so just like it has been heavy at times is the commuting today. there could be really dangerous conditions on some of the roadways. so be careful out there. especially as the traffic starts to back up. we're live, thom jensen, today in the bay. >> mike has been tracking all the traffic rubs this morning. vianey arana is timing the rain. >> we know it's raining right now.

but when is it going to stop for your friday? it is friday after all. good news is that it should start tapering off around the 7:30 hour. we'll start to see the rest of that push up. by 10:00 look at this. the majority of the bay area will start to get peeks of sunshine expecting to get even more clearing into the afternoon. temperatures will be in the 60s. but if it you're traveling to the sierra, definitely expect rain through the sacramento area and lake tahoe area as well. big storm on sunday though. plan for that. the bridge last hoar ray. that's what people are saying. wet roadways, fresh rain here. rain still falling on the lens. things will start to taper down. so that south bay will have rain. it's happening right now. >> we want to see what the rain is like in your neighborhood. this is linda york's house in san jose.
