it's been a very active weather system. highway 17 has just reopened after a highway patrol car was damaged this afternoon. take a look at video of the damage. you see it right there, you see the back window on the chp card broken, happening at granite creek business center. we're still trying to put together what happened. chp says it has not confirmed what it was that hip the vehicle. it shut down highway 17 summit, but about a half hour or so ago, it was announced it was open. we'll keep you posted. hope you're enjoying today's break from the rain, but our storm ranger is tracking, you see the green coming in, the storm coming in. it's really going to get busy tonight. flash flood warnings are out,

to bring heavy rain. >> we brought in extra crews to help out, but we have crews on the streets clearing catch basins. we also have tree crews on standby. >> reporter: flood barriers are up at 17th and full so many. the city's operation center will be activated sunday to help coordinate the weather response. this was at parts here. this is the only one we have left. >> reporter: tarps sold fast. a new shipment is expected monday, when people are stocking up for the weather. >> extenders for their gutters, we've sold a few sump pumps those will probably start selling once the rain really start hitting hard. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area news. now let's check in with rob mayeda to find out exact will what the storms are bringing.

rob, this is a big one. in terms of how much moisture can fall, it looks pretty big we've been seeing some of the rain moving off to the east. this is the warm-up or preview before the main event rolls in a bit later on into tomorrow morning. the excessive rainfall outlook, locations that could have the highest risk, right here through sonoma county, also the santa cruz mountains, you see the areas in recent here around the czu burn scar, both those locations, in the north bay and santa cruz mountains under a flash flood watch. for the north bay that gets started at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, no the central bay and santa cruz mountains, that's not until 1:00. it tells you about the timing of the storm impacting the north bay. one thing we will see start up pretty much for everyone in the

after alec baldwin accidentally shot them both. hutchins and souza were standing together. souza is now out of the hospital. he's a fremont native, still lives there with his children and his wife. he wrote this today -- i am gutted by the loss of my friend and colleague. she fought for every inch. my thought are with her family at this most difficult time. i am humbled and grateful of the outpouring of affection we have received. it will surely aid in my recovery. from fripgtening moments in san francisco. people in the hate ash bury after bullets fly in the middle of the day. it happened near haight and central. people are still piecing together the details. a bullet struck the front window of ritual coffee roasters right on the corner.

nobody was injured. the supervisor has a lot of people in the neighborhood concerned. they want extra pay for working through the pandemic, and they won't go unheard. vta workers and supporters rallied at city hall today. organizers say they risk their lives by operating trains and buses over the last 18 months. some have even brought covid into their homes, and they deserve retroactive hazard pay, but their demands are falling on deaf ears. >> it's about time we pay. we suffered, our families, we brought the covid 4078 to our families. why not now? >> organizers say they have sent four letters since april of 2020 trying to negotiate. vta says it's actively engaging with employee unions to reach an agreement. it started in oakland,

stay with us for after the game for reaction. we were talking about rain and talking about wind. >> i think it's going to be more wind. at least to dart we'll see south winds at times, but the rain aspect out there at levi's stadium, this is one of the location that will seen a bit of a rain shadow. we think around kickoff time we'll see a few showers, and toward the second half more rain may move in. one of the relatively drier parts in the bay area should be santa clara and san jose. right now you have cloudy skies, muggy outside. you probably noticed that, too, as the atmospheric river begins to aim at the area. in san francisco, you can see a few light showers off to the north at 63 degrees, so the same

skies you are seeing now, you wake up to tomorrow morning, though the north bay start off -- the south bay not much rain. winds to start, and then as we head into the afternoon hours, highs in the mid 60s pretty much throughout the -- and upper 60s possible south of san jose. you see those spotty showers you're seeing here from our storm ranger view. we're starting to see the initial bands of light to moderate rain sweeping in through the first half of tomorrow, followed up by heavier rain into the amp and even. notice the timing here on the flash flood watches. they do get started at 5:00 a.m. through 11:00 tomorrow night. for the santa cruz mountains, things get started in the early afternoon. so rainfall totals could be extreme across the north bay. location that will be in the rainfall the longest of those high rain rates. notice by 9:00 a.m., still 23409 much there.

i think that trend is probably going to continue through about 5:00. there's your rain shadow in the santa clara valley. in the north bay, 3 to 4 inches of rain. and toward the diablo range and santa cruz mountains, it will be common in the mountains, but the higher peaks could go higher. so for the timing, it's going to be in the north bay from about 9:00 a.m., then into the afternoon pushing into the central bay. by the south bay around 7:00, you're beginning to see the rain fill in then toward the end service the monday -- we'll finally catch a break. as we move forward we'll sione going chances of showers tuesday into wednesday, but not with the same atmospheric river connection we are seeing right now. second half of the week things

do start to dry out, as the rain chances keep the totals a bit farther north of the bay area. we're going to need it after tomorrow. san francisco a few lingering showers, and then we'll get the north bay showers into tuesday and wednesday. the second half of the week, things start to dry out. for the next 24 hours, a big punch of wind, rain and high turf, maybe 30-for a breaers. this is a powerful storm. >> rob, thanks very much. we'll be right back.
