days away. this morning a break through in getting kids back to their normal lives. the fda authorizing pfizer's low dose covid vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. the decision coming days after an advisory committee overwhelmingly voted in favor of recommending the vaccine. which pfizer says is 91% effective at preventing severe infection. >> vaccines are one of the best tools in the fight against the pandemic and making sure young children have access to them is a high priority. >> reporter: roughly 28 million kids could be eligible for the first shot as early as next week after a final sign off from the cdc. more than 25,000 pediatric and primary care offices are ready for the rollout along with pharmacies and clinics. new york city has ordered 230,000 doses. >> the moment we get the final word from washington. 24 hours later we'll be up and

vaccine mandates is in effect. city workers who didn't get at least one dose of the vaccine will be placed on unpaid leave monday. union leaders are warning of staffing shortages, closed firehouses and a longer response time from emergency responders next week. >> kathy park in new york starting us off. thank you. let's bring in dr. john torres. good morning to you. as kathy mentioned the new poll finds about two-thirds of parents are hesitant to get their kids the shots. what's your advice? >> there is that hesitancy to get the shot, parents are protective of their child. one from a community perspective, children right now are 25% of the cases out there, that's from a community perspective. but parents are worried about their own child. here's numbers for their own child, last week 118,000 children ended up with pfizer,

since the pandemic over 8,000 have been hospitalized and 146 deaths. which puts covid now in the top ten causes of death for children. so i would say look at the stats because it's important to understand if your child gets covid, that could be devastating with life-long consequences. so the vaccine itself proven to be safe in the trials. there were no side effects we know they occur in the first couple of months so the long-term effect is theoretical and rare at the most. so again, joe, the main thing is look at what could happen if your child gets covid versus the vaccine itself which we know is safe and effective. >> there was a new study by the cdc on friday that showed that the vaccine offers more protection than anti-bodies that you would get from getting covid. what can you tell us about that? >> kristen, this answers the question a lot of people have

about natural immunity, if i have covid, am i protected? it turns out not as well as if you get if vaccine. they looked at people around the country who had covid, recovered and got covid again and hospitalized versus those that got vaccinated and had breakthrough infections. you are five times more likely to get covid if you had the natural immunity. so this is answering that question that a lot of people have had. >> dr. torres, quickly on this last one, halloween is on sunday, is it safe to take the kids trick or the treating? >> this year is a great year to take them trick or treating, i want them to go out, just be safe like you normally would for halloween. but take hand sanitizer in a car with other friends keep the windows down. sanitize your hands before you give out candy. have fun but wait until you get home with the candy so your parents can look through it, and

plan. but progressive democrats are upset about what's been cut out, particularly the lack of any paid family leave. progressives have enough members in their ranks to delay any significant progress before the president left for the overseas trip. leaving him engaging with world leaders on economic and climate issues without an agreement on how the u.s. will handle those kinds of issues. and remember, it's the tight virginia governor's race that's just three days away, seen widely as a referendum on the biden presidency so far. >> on friday one of president trump's most outspoken critics announced he won't run for re-election, what can you tell us about that? >> a notable retirement since adam kinzinger was one who he also served on the select committee investigating that attack. the illinois congressman announced in a video friday that if he ever thought it was time to move on, he would.

and rhode island were still trying to repair power from the last week's nor'easter. the grown so saturated it gave way under this crane friday. those visuals were striking and the storm is not done with us yet. let's look right now, the latest on the satellite and radar, taking us to new england. that's the focus for our saturday because that's where the rain is situated. we're starting to dry out in the mid atlantic and parts of the northeast. heaviest rain across new england we have the strong wind pushing on shore that's going to prompt coastal flooding as a concern. tomorrow into sunday, notice how it moves to the north pushing through maine and vermont. starting to dry out in time for halloween so that's good news but not before dumping so much rain. generally speaking 1 to 3 inches of rain is possible from connecticut through maine. but some areas could see higher amounts and with rainfall exceeding an inch per hour,

another few minutes. we want to get another check of the headlines. many parents concerned about covid may be breathing a sigh of relief this morning. the fda on friday granted emergency use authorization for pfizer's low-dose vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, about 28 million kids could be eligible for the first shot next week after a final signoff from the cdc. pfizer says the low-dose vaccine is 95% effective at preventing severe infection. in a recent survey two-thirds of parents surveyed said they're going to wait or never give the vaccine to their children. this video going viral of a fistfight of two men on a delta airlines plane before it took off from atlanta. two other passengers stepped in to try to break it up. police say the argument began when one passenger put something in the pocket of his seat back upsetting the man in front of him. one man was charged in the incident.
