there are thousands of fdny personnel that remain unvaccinated. it's not just the fire department and police, it's sanitation. today the clock runs out. any city worker who is unvaccinated cannot come to work and won't get paid. this morning, the deadline is here for new york city's workforce. starting today, firefighters, police officers, sanitation workers and other city employees will be put on unpaid leave and could even lose their jobs if still unvaccinated. more than 22,000 government workers failed to comply with de blasio's covid-19 mandate as of sunday night. firefighters in particular are still lagging behind with the fdny reporting a vaccination rate of just 75%. this morning, the firefighter's union, which is against the mandate, defending its members. >> all we are asking for is extra time. we wanted to get some time so they canner they could file their religious and medical exemptions as well as make their retirement decisions and get

their vaccination if they so choose. >> reporter: department leaders denying reports that some firehouses were closed this weekend due to staffing issues. after 2,000 firefighters cled out sick. but in a blunt statement, the fdny commissioner says some members are purposely staying home, calling it irresponsible, bogus sick leave, creating a danger for new yorkers and their fellow firefighters. union leaders insist there is no coordinated sick out. while nationwide, millions of new covid vaccine doses could be on the move in just 48 hours if the cdc signs off on pfizer's pediatric vaccine for kids ages 5 to 11. doctors recommend signing your child up as soon as possible. >> we can decrease the number of kids getting sick, we can make a huge dent in the pandemic. >> reporter: health experts hoping to change the minds of a majority of parents of 5 to 11-year-olds who say they're uneasy, some pointing to very rare cases of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart

muscle. pfizer's pediatric trials found no evidence of myocarditis. but moderna and the fda has notified the company that it will need additional time to determine whether it causes heart problems in adolescents citing the risk of myocarditis after vaccination. >> let's go back to that mandate. the firefighters union is saying they want more time. what are the other things they're asking for? >> reporter: they're questioning the urgency of doing this now. they say the numbers are low, that their infection rate within the department is extremely low and they're questioning why jeopardize response times to push this thing forward right now? they are also pushing for testing. they want widespread testing, that that might be the best way to figure out where the virus is within the department and the best way to protect the people in new york city. hoda. >> we'll see how this plays out. stephanie gosk for us, thank you.

also this morning, the u.s. supreme court is taking up two challenges to the most restrictive abortion regulations in the country, the texas law that virtually ended abortions in that state. pete williams has the story for us. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the justices agreed to take these texas cases on a fast track ramping up the drama on this supreme court term and it's turning out to be one of the most important ever for the issue of abortion. the court is considering what is to become of two lawsuits challenging sb8, the texas law that stopped nearly all abortions until the state. the law says they can't be performed after six week of pregnancy before most women know they're pregnant. >> it is meant to intimidate, to threaten, to make us not provide the abortion care people need. >> reporter: the supreme court says state officials cannot ban

abortion that early. it allows anyone to sue any doctor who performs an abortion or helps out. those suing can collect at least $10,000. supporters say it works. >> we know that the texas heartbeat act saves about 100 lives per day from abortion. >> reporter: texas is urging the supreme court to rule that because none of its officials do anything to enforce the law, they cannot be sued. but abortion providers in the state and the justice department both say their lawsuit should go forward and that state court clerks and judges should be blocked from doing anything to carry out the law. the biden administration says texas should not be allowed to use its novel law to nullify a constitutional right to abortion. >> just passed the law empowering complete strangers to become bounty hunters, going after women who exercise their right to choose. >> reporter: and a month from now, theourt hears an even bigger case, a challenge to mississippi on roe versus wade itself.

trial. the now 18-year-old is accused of opening fire with an ar-style rifle killing two people and injuring a third. lasted summer, rittenhouse had travelled to wisconsin from illinois after calls went out on social media for people to help protect the city during the protests and unrest that erupted following the shooting of jacob blake. >> there's somebody hurt. i'm running into harm's way. that's why i have my rifle. >> reporter: blake, a black man, was shot multiple times in the back by a white police officer during a domestic disturbance call. he's now paralyzed from the neck down. this happened just months after george floyd's death. he faces two counts of homicide among other charges and rittenhouse faces potentially life in prison. the judge in the case has already made national headlines for deciding the attorneys must not refer to the men rittenhouse shot as victims. >> the word victim is a loaded,

loaded word. and i think alleged victim is a cousin to it. >> reporter: the judge rules the lawyers can, however, refer to the three men as rioters, looters or arsonists if they have evidence to support those claims. his lawyers are expected to argue rittenhouse, who has pleaded not guilty, shot the men in self-defense. >> when we have the self-defense on tape, we have the case on tape. >> reporter: beyond the courtroom, the case has highlighted a deep political divide and has re-ignited the debate over guns and self-defense. >> on the one hand, there's the narrative that mr. rittenhouse was a vigilante who came from out of state armed. on the other hand, mr. rittenhouse is arguing that he was the victim, that he came here to protect people and to protect lives. >> reporter: video of the men interacting with rittenhouse is expected to be a key part of this trial, which is expected to last two to three weeks.

today, but that's an improvement over the weekend when thousands of flights were canceled we've now got double the passenger loads we had a year ago and now we have anger in airports and even some violence in the skies this morning, flying the so-called friendly skies is going from infuriating to down right frightening. american airlines canceled close to 2,000 flights over the weekend. scrapping more than a third of its flights on sunday alone. passengers from new york to dallas to miami waiting hours in endless lines to rebook or even speak to an agent. >> they said it was the original time and then they canceled it >> reporter: monica velez did not receive a text that her flight was canceled until she was already at the airport it said choose another flight but i don't have flights available. i have to work monday and i have a 9-year-old at home

believed the fbi investigation into the email scandal announced shortly before the election led directly to her loss >> i think the determining factor was the intervention by comey on august 28th >> that sets the sage and huma abedin joins us now. good morning >> good morning, savannah. >> i've knowner for years. this is the first time you've ever done a live interview >> that's exactly right. >> how do you feel >> i generally tend to like being in the background, but i'm feeling great. i'm excited to be here today >> i wanted to ask you about this you've had a fascinating life, an international childhood, you've been at the heights of power but you're writing a memoir and you have to go there on everything. and it reopens the punish u public gaze on some painful chapters why did you want to do that? >> first of all, the book was amazing therapy for me and i have spent 25 years of my life in public and i've always been the invisible person, the silent person behind the primary person and i've liked it that way i preferred being in the background, being in service of the mission.

but while i was silenced, somebody else was telling my story. and i decided that if i allowed that to happen, somebody else is writing my history so for me, it's an opportunity to talk about this incredible, privileged, extraordinary life i had, the highs, the challenges, and maybe out there there are some women it might help or some young brown girls or muslim women. i think i have some lessons and some life experiences i'm proud to share >> we can't possibly capture it all, but i have to ask you about anthony, your husband, anthony weiner you talk about meeting him he was your first serious boyfriend, your first valentine date were there warning signs even then >> i think from the minute i met anthony, and i write extensively about our meeting and our relationship he was a force of nature he was charismatic he was smart i think one of the things that

attracted me to anthony at the beginning was this joint commitment to public service and trying to do the next right good thing. in hindsight, hindsight is 2020. i think a lot of people look at our relationship from a 2021 perspective. but in the moment, it was this all consuming love affair. as you said, he was my first love he was the first man, as i write in the book, i had ever been with >> the book chronicles in deeply painful detail what appeared to be a cycle of betrayal, public revelation and humiliation live and repeat that you went through. and i know there are people who would say, savannah, you have to ask her, why did you -- why did you stay so long why did you put up with that >> well, as i said, a lot of people look at this, our relationship from a 2021 perspective. in that moment, in 2011, number one, i was in shock. just to get -- remind people, the first time the scandal broke, i was carrying his child. i wasn't even 12 weeks pregnant. my baby became my primary focus. i was deeply in love with this man.

i didn't understand the behavior and what was happening and every sort of decision i made was a decision for that moment, for periods of time i was just trying to get through that day >> do you think you were in denial a little bit? >> i don't think i was in denial i think i did not understand that my husband had a compulsion, as was later revealed, an addiction that was increasingly getting worse over time it's not that we weren't in therapy. it just wasn't -- you know, you have to be committed and we tried, but we just didn't -- >> he tried to mount a political comeback after that first revelation you defended him and in the middle of that campaign, yet new revelations came out so essentially while he's running for mayor, he's lying. you don't know it, but he does do you regret standing by him? >> i don't regret standing by

him. and as i say in the book, i have an entire chapter explaining the why. i know there's been a lot of speculation on what is wrong with her, what is she thinking in that time i decided it was the right thing to do because i had encouraged him to run for mayor i did think that he was a good public servant and i thought this was the way back for him. i write very detailed, i was in shock. i went through a period of time saying i just -- i want my live back we didn't just have any live we had this most perfect live. i thought we had this amazing love affair. so no, for me, i felt i owed it to people to stand at that podium because i had supported his decision to run. >> the final straw for you was a revelation, yet another one in 2016, a picture of him indecent next to your sleeping toddler son. and that was the last straw for you. did you worry that your child

could be taken away from you you write that cps, child protective services investigated your family. >> it was a -- yes it was -- any mother, if you asked her what she would do if she thinks somebody would take your child, i think the answer would be what i wrote in the book, which is i would stand at that door and not allow it to happen it was a harrowing experience, but i chose to write about it in great detail in the book >> all this time, this is all happening. it would be enough for any one person you're at the heights of political power. you were a senior adviser to hillary clinton and the irony is not lost on anyone that hillary clinton herself had been through public scandal, had had to deal with an infidelity did she give you advice then did she say huma, leave him. what was her thought then? >> i have had the privilege of working for her for 25 years and i would say -- and i think anybody who works for hillary would say this, is whenever i've

had any personal challenges, or, really, any challenges, she has approached the conversation with me as a friend first and a boss second and she showed every time that i am here for you, i support you whatever your decision is. we are all here for you. >> things got very complicated whether late in the campaign in 2016, some emails between you and hillary clinton were discovered on anthony weiner's laptop she had been forwarded the investigation found so that he could print them out for you. but in any event, james comey reopened the email investigation 11 days before election day. and you heard hillary clinton say she felt that contributed and was the determining factor in her words to her loss you've said in the book that you will carry that to your grave. you feel guilty about it >> i lived with a tremendous amount of guilt from the moment this unprecedented announcement ten days before the election,

breaking the norm of any previous fbi director, yeah, it was a shock to my system and two days earlier and the thing that really got to me about that experience is the year before, when i had heard that the fbi was starting this investigation, i had not heard from anybody about any information and i had volunteered. i had reached out to say can i be helpful i didn't understand why nobody tried to reach me. so, yes, i will carry that to my grave. >> we just have a few moments left i do want to ask you about a revelation in the book you talk being a staffer for then senator clinton and a sitting u.s. senator forcibly trying to kiss you you said it's not sexual assault, but he made a pass at you.

you didn't identify this senator. why not? >> so i was thoughtful i really thought about what i was going to include in the book if you read the whole book, you can see that i had chosen to tell my full truth and i told that story for two reasons. number one, i think women or people tend to bury their trauma that is something that happened to me. and i had buried it. and the reason it came back to my mind is when i was watching the brett kavanaugh hearings and saw christine blasey ford. and it was as i was watching the hearings and listening to this conversation that my experience came back to me. so for me, it's about being able to share my truth and, by the way, i think back in the 2000s, plenty of women, not just in politics, but even in every industry, just endured these things and buried them >> just to put a pin on it, some senators now have said huma should identify this person because what if there are people who have similar allegations >> i chose not to name the
