enlisting the help of the narcotics and homicide divisions to try to find some answers here as some concertgoers are now fighting for their lives. this morning, every frame of astroworld fest video painting a more disturbing picture of the deadly crowd surge, and scrutiny on the response to the massive crowd. houston police say more than 500 officers and 750 security guards were on-site, yet with two reported emergency plans it wasn't enough. houston's police chief visiting scott personally before the show, expressing concerns regarding public safety. somewhere in this crushing sea of fans eight victims lost their lives. one of them 21-year-old axila acosta. the weight of the crowd suffocating him. >> axle died as a result of a phenomena known as crowd rush. >> reporter: his father heartbroken. >> i loved my son. it could be you, it could be you. >> reporter: the family joining

a growing number of lawsuits. >> what was happening inside that crowd? >> just a complete loss of tr where i was going. >> reporter: not accused of doing so friday, scott's no stranger to inciting crowds. in 2015 the rapper pled guilty to reckless conduct after allegedly encouraging fans to rush the stage in chicago and in 2017, similarly pled guilty to disorderly conduct after allegedly urging fans to jump barricades at an arkansas concert. after friday's tragedy scott was devastated announcing he will cover all funeral costs and provide further aid. the blount family praying for all the help they can get. 9-year-old ezra was on his father's shoulders before falling into the crowd. >> the crowd started going crazy, and he goes, i can't

breathe, i can't breathe. >> reporter: now ezra is in a coma, his hopeful family by his side. >> it's just a lot of things that could have prevented that and it's really no excuse for >> reporter: and we've learned today that travis scott will not be performing at a weekend concert in las vegas. the performer says he's too distraught to play and promised full refunds to anyone who bought a ticket to the astroworld festival. and we've heard from drake. the rapper saying he is heartbroken for the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives. >> thank you very much. joining us is houston's fire chief, samuel pena. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. >> it's been a few days but do you have any better idea of what may have initiated, caused the crowd to start stampeding the stage? >> savannah, first of all, i would like to express our condolences to the families of the deceased and certainly our prayers are with them and the injured that still remain in the hospital.

the investigation is still ongoing. it's still in its infancy for sure, but we're getting some picture of what may have caused this incident. it seems as though the crowd began to try to push towards the front to get as close to the stage as they could when mr. scott's set began. what was happening is the barricades that were placed in -- to prevent the surge towards the stage, in essence, caused other areas of pinch points and as the crowd began to surge and push and compress towards the front, it was those people in the center that began to get crushed and the injuries started to begin. we're still trying to determine what caused the crowd to begin that surge, but certainly we're looking at everything. we're participating with the houston police department who

has taken the lead on this investigation and we owe it to the families and certainly we need to ensure that this does not happen again. >> your department and the houston police department declared as mass casualty event at approximately 9:38. the first patient treated by your paramedics two minutes later and the music reportedly continued until 10:15. do you think someone should called off the concert? would that have helped minimize the injuries here? >> well, look, there's certainly a lot of questions to be answered there. we did declare a mass casualty incident a little after 9:30 and, you know, i'm glad we were prepositioned ahead of time, even though the plan did not call for that to happen, we had resources on scene monitoring the conversations. we had some units pre-deployed and some that were requested soon after the incident

commander there was beginning to hear the chatter and the incident escalate. so we were able to quickly respond as soon as we knew that the private company that was providing the medical component became overwhelmed. >> let me ask you, you lad been quoted in "the new york times" saying the one person who can really call for and get a tactical pause when something goes wrong is that performer. they have that bullypulpit and they have a responsibility. let me be very blunt about it, do you believe the performer travis scott should have called an end to the concert once he saw what was taking place in front of the stage? >> absolutely. look, we all have a responsibility. everybody in that -- at that event has a responsibility. starting from the artist on down. certainly as soon as they became aware and there was evidence that the crowd itself was trying to approach some of their private security, the security that was in that -- closer to

that stage, that something was wrong. at one point there was an ambulance that was trying to make its way through the crowd and, you know, the artist has command of that crowd. in my opinion, this is my opinion right now because everything is going to be fleshed out throughout the investigation, but certainly, the artist, if he notices something going on, he can certainly pause that performance, turn on the lights and say hey, we're not going to continue until this thing is resolved. that's one way to do it. >> and just to -- one more point on this issue, do you have any evidence, do you have any reason to believe that performer or anyone on stage initiated or encouraged this rushing of the stage? you know, we've obviously reported there have been a couple prior guilty pleas by

travis scott with this kind of conduct. this is a separate night, a separate incident. is there any evidence that you've collected that suggests in any way he initiated this? >> no, not at this point. i'm not prepared to say that. i'm not prepared to say that he was fully aware of what was going on. all i'm saying is that everybody at that event from the artist on down, security and everybody that's there to provide public safety, including the crowds, right, in general, we all have a responsibility when we attend these venues to ensure each other's safety and so everybody is -- we're a community at these events. all these are going to be -- all these answers are going to be provided as soon as the investigation is completed, but we really need to take a critical look at everything that went on there because we cannot have this happen again. here in the city or anywhere. >> absolutely.

specific bedtime >> really specific nbc's kerry sanders joins us with the story hi kerry, good morning >> good morning. i'm not in my bedroom, guys, here this is the miami sleep life center here. every night, different patients come in and they hook them up to these leads to determine how their sleeping patterns are. now there's a new study that shows it's not only about getting eight hours of sleep and when you go to sleep and there is a relationship between when you go to sleep and heart disease. by now, we all know mom was right. going to bed and getting a good night's sleep makes it so much easier to get through the day. but now new research shows the exact time you go to bed could determine how healthy your heart beats. the european society of cardiology's latest study shows falling asleep between 10 and 11:00 p.m. lowers the risk of

developing cardiovascular disease, warning early or late bedtimes may be more likely to disrupt the body clock the study, which followed 88,000 people in the united kingdom for nearly six years found night owls who went to bed after midnight had a 25% higher risk while surprisingly, those who said good night before 10:00 had a 24% higher risk. when compared to those who fell asleep in that golden hour, between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. the connection between clocking what time you go to sleep and cardiac risk, even more pronounced among women >> people have a tendency to more think of cognitive health when they think of sleep but remember something, when you're asleep, it's giving your heart a bit of a break to rest and relax for the next day when you shorten that time, your heart unfortunately doesn't get the rest it needs.

and we're back with our special honoring those who serve. this morning, we are focussing on hallowed ground >> you are looking at behind us and on the video here arlington national cemetery, the tomb of the unknown soldier. this week marks 100 years sinc the memorial's dedication. craig, recently, you had a very emotional visit there. >> the plaza surrounding the tomb of the unknown soldier, it's reserved for the sentinels who keep guard only on special occasions are heads of state or other dignitaries allowed to present a wreath or flowers. but for this anniversary, the public is getting the chance to step forward and pay their respects the leaves are just starting to turn at arlington national cemetery a new season beginning among the ageless.

marble headstones. at the heart of some o america's most hallowed ground stands the tomb of the unknown soldier. cindy chip first visited when she was 15 >> we came up here and we watched the change of the guard at the tomb. i was so profoundly moved by that and i never forgot it >> cindy comes to arlington often. her son, michael, is here. >> he always wanted to be a soldier. never anything else. >> michael died in iraq in 2007 and is buried in section 60, along with his comrades, killed in iraq war in afghanistan, now cindy is among the more than 12,000 people who have signed up to lay flowers at the tomb today and tomorrow >> it would seem as if this place, it seems like it helps you. >> it does it does. it's service for me. i have taken mike's service and i've made it my service.

coming to the tomb, coming to this place, it helps m because i'm doing that service >> near the tomb, you'll find a tree dedicated to the mothers of the unknowns a century ago, it was the anguish of mothers that helped inspire the need for a tomb. dedicated to america's unidentified war dead. more than 100,000 americans were killed in world war i. in 1921, the remains of a single unidentified soldier was selected to represent all of his unidentified comrades lost in the war were entombed. s -- interred in the first tomb of the unknown soldier the tomb as we know it was completed a decade later in 1958, unknowns from world war ii and the korean war were interred in 1984, an unknown from the vietnam war was interred but those remains were later identified and that crypt was rededicated to missing service

members. the unknowns at arlington are never alone. the sentinels of the u.s. army's old guard keep watch night and day. we got the rare opportunity to visit their quarters and see how they prepare for their neverending mission. before each soldier heads out for their patrol or walk, as they call them, he or she is sworn by their unit who inspect everything their standard is perfection and they rarely fall short sergeant trevor is a senior member of the unit. >> i'm responsible for inspecting the soldier coming on, inspecting his uniform and posting him. >> for those that do come and pay their respects, what do you hope they take away? >> i really hope that they take away the gravity of the experience as guards, we're out there every day. we see a lot we feel a lot. we get to experience a lot and i hope that the public can

take away a little bit of what we feel, being able to be so close to the unknowns. >> on the back of the tomb are etched the words here rests in honored glory an american soldier known but to god but for cindy chip, a gold star mom whose son is buried in section 60, she's coming to the tomb to honor the soldiers and their sacrifice. >> we don't know that soldier's name we don't know anything about him, except that he was an american soldier he gave his life for his country and we will never forget him and every mother in her heart that is what we want to say. just don't forget him. just don't forget that he lived. and that is what that tomb says to me. this country will never forget him. >> it's become a mission to make sure that we do not forget and she's making good on that mission. i'll be honest, when i lived in d.c. for a number of years, embarrassingly, i had never been to the tomb of the unknown

soldier until that story >> you had a beautiful conversation with her and one that followed that wasn't on camera, too. >> yeah. you know, she was talking about her son. and -- who died in iraq in 2007. the interview was over and i was just asking her, how are you doing? how are you making it from day-to-day and she said, craig, you have small children i tucked him in at night, i know what made him scared and so, obviously, you know, you don't recover from something like that. but she is taking that pain and she has turned it into this. if you have an opportunity to take it down to the tomb and pay respects >> it changes you forever. >> it really does. it really does our thanks to the folks there that gave us that access >> yeah. >> and the opportunity to lay flowers at the tomb available to the public today and tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. you have to register in advance. to do that, you can find a link on our website and by the way, the sentinels who stand guard, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. regardless of weather.

a very good morning to you. it is 8:26 right now. i'm laura garcia. let's take a live look at the richmond san rafael bridge. we're in this microclimate weather alert right now. a bit of a wet morning around the bay area with the tail end of a an atmospheric river moving through. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the conditions for us. >> we've had some pretty decent rainfall totals in the north bay. mt. tam measuring over 3.5 inches of rain. in the santa cruz mountains, about 2.25. santa rosa approaching 2 inches of rain, while san francisco has had about 3/4 of an inch of rain, about a half inch in antioch.

the rain has been very spotty. we'll continue to see light showers moving through some areas. that moisture streaming in and a lot of clouds with it. need the umbrella to be close by through at least noon, and then we'll start to see our rain chances going down. but we do once again still see the rain chances, especially in the north bay, but by 4:00 to 5:00, around sunset, we are drying out. and we have a lot of dry weather in the forecast, so we're trying to soak up as much as we can out of this storm system before we head back into at least seven days of some sunshine in the forecast and warmer temperatures. laura? >> all right. thank you very much. thank you for joining us, as well. we'll be back with another local news update in half an hour

are working to spot, seize and stop bogus and dangerous merchandise from getting to you. watch as federal investigators break open a cargo container suspected of carrying counterfeit goods at the port of new york and new jersey. customs and border protection using intel to intercept the items before they can enter the market it's one of thousands of containers arriving daily this u.s. port, packed with holiday favorites like smartphones, toys and decorations. and decorations. authorities trying to stop counterfeits before they're bought by consumers, worried about the supply chain and bottlenecks at our nation's ports. some of these containers are hide ago treasure trove of fake goods, cheaply immediate items designed to look authentic sometimes they're even dangerous. in order to prevent these counterfeit goods from making their way to you, officers with customs and border protection bring the items here to this warehouse. we can't tell you where it is, but this is where officers inspect the goods to make sure

they're legitimate and safe. with me is customs and border assistant port director ed boss tell me about why it's so important to protect consumers from fake goods. >> the mission is to protect the american public from all threats. one of those threats is by counterfeit goods that could be dangerous and potentially lethal to the american consumer >> last year, cpv stopped over 20,000 shipments of legal products with a $1.3 billion value. >> as i look at the labeling it looks legitimate. >> it's a counterfeit url label. there have been documented cases of these types of lights bursting into flames. >> they aren't alone the consumer product safety commission is here, too, looking at kids' products. >> we're here every day and that is our job, protecting kids. >> aerial silverman is a compliance investigator with cpc. she says an ongoing threat, toxic levels of lead and chemicals. often found in children's clothes and dolls.

>> we always look at dolls. >> reporter: she says these knockoff dolls tested positive for high levels of fall lates used to make plastics soft and flexible some can affect development and the reproductive system. >> you can take a doll out of the box, get a quick reading and know if it contains harmful chemicals. >> within minutes, yes the threshold is 2.1 -- is 0.1 and this is 2.43%. that is obviously very high. >> even children's clothing can be harmful >> this is super cute. you tested it for lead >> we did. if you test these buttons, the legal limit is 100 parts per million. but if we use our testing equipment, it came back at over 3,000 parts per million, so it's 30 times the legal limit buying counterfeit items goes beyond getting fake or dangerous products homeland security investigations or hsi says the money often funds terrorism, human trafficking and major criminal organizations. >> counterfeiting is a

multibillion dollar industry >> reporter: jason heads new jersey, from origin to final destination, his team of special agents investigates the counterfeit cargo found by cbp >> why should people not buy counterfeit goods? when they think of it as a victimless crime, what do you say? >> they're breaking a law by producing counterfeit goods. now i have a possible identity fraud. >> don't let counterfeits ruin your holiday buy from reputable stores and websites when you're on-line make sure the company has a real address and a phone number and if the price tize good to be true, that is a red flag >> we want you to get a good deal but we don't want you to get an inferior product >> or perhaps one that might be unsafe >> absolutely. wow. >> so, i mean, what are some of the most popular products that are being seized >> yeah. year after year and the top three is usually handbags, clothes, jewelry, which includes watches. and just remember, while it can
