season. >> president biden says reversing the trend is now his top priority especially in retail service and but in order to do that, he'll have to combat two major factors. >> the supply chain issues we've been telling you about for months caused by covid disruptions and a major increase in pent-up demand, plus a dramatic shortage of workers, especially in retail, service and shipping industries. all of it a perfect storm combining for price hikes nearly across the board >> we've got it all covered from what's being done to turn things around here in the u.s. to china the first link in that troubled supply chain what you need to know. tom costello is kicking things off. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. from main street usa to your main street, your local shopping mall, your grocery store, we're seeing this every single day you hit the bottom line here americans are spending big time pent-up demand after being locked down during covid but the supply chain can't keep up right now that's sending prices higher and experts say it's unlikely that we're going to see the prices come down any time soon.

>> reporter: whether you're filling your tank, stocking up at the grocery store or dining out, the cost for just about everything is trending higher. the consumer price index spiking 6.2% for october the largest inflation surge in more than three decades. >> gas prices have bananas >> everything is more expensive, everything across the board. >> reporter: just in the past year, a gallon of milk has climbed 28 cents a pound of ground beef up 66 cents. gas prices have soared more than a dollar reaching levels we haven't seen since 2014. used cars are also up 26% and at auto shops nationwide the supply chain crisis is making it tough to order parts >> most of them are available if you're willing to wait but everything -- it used to be we could get cars in and out in a day. now it's sometimes a week. >> a week. or even longer >> or even longer, absolutely. >> reporter: discounts this season may be hard to come by.

and you'll pay more if you're traveling over the holidays. for thanksgiving, up 23% from last year. $300 round trip on average if you wait until christmas week, $511 round trip. >> reporter: the good news, airfares are lower than they were before the pandemic but across the country, millions of people have now left the workforce. >> the economy is reopening and employers are scrambling for workers and they're having to pay more money to workers. what they're doing is they're passing along those higher costs in their prices. >> reporter: that's creating a dilemma for some businesses. >> pricing i get now changes almost weekly. >> reporter: they've avoided passing on the cost customers. >> i'm not going to change the sign out there to say market price like it's seafood. we keep it what it is. some weeks it's a lower margin

and some weeks it's a higher one. >> reporter: the trouble is, a lot of these businesses, especially small businesses, they simply can't afford to eat that cost. they have to pass it on to the consumer they have to pass it on to you and me and that means everything is just getting more expensive. hoda, back to you. >> thank you >> joining us now is stephanie ruhle. i hope you brought your crystal ball i really want to know how long this inflation might last. >> listen, no one knows how long we're going to experience this but we have to remember, this is not inflation in isolation all of this is part of the covid recovery and the government knew it was going to be rocky it's why you saw three stimulus checks right now you're seeing the families of 60 million children get, on average, $430 a month as part of that expanded child tax credit while people at home are watching and saying, i'm on a fixed income, i'm on social security, that's scary, but they've adjusted those social security benefits next year up 5.9% specifically to adjust for

inflation. so while this doesn't feel good, there are cushion around us to help us get through this. >> how bad is this going to get, you look in the grocery stores, eggs, steak, then you go to gasoline. everything is going up. how bad do you see it getting? >> it's not good especially in the short term you mentioned gas. we're heading into winter. it's going to cost a lot more to heat our homes this winter on average from $300 to $500 that is real money remember, over the last few months, people have been pushing for higher wages. that's a really good thing but what we're experiencing is the consequence of higher wages. you pay employees more, the customer at the end might end up getting that passed onto them. unfortunately, inflation is moving up faster than wages are. so that bigger paycheck you're getting, the money is getting wiped out. >> that's the burn here. the wages are going up, but inflation is going up more so much for that you said you would leave us with some good news.

>> there is good news. one of reasons prices are up is because people can afford to pay those prices we're expecting a record holiday season in terms of consumer demand, consumer shopping. and while wall street is not -- and the market is not the same thing as the economy, you do have to acknowledge over half of american households have some investment in the stock market, mostly i funds. and the stock market is way up. if you own a home, the value of homes is way up. and with all of these jobs out there, there are job opportunities and wages are going up. it's a mix picture. i know it feels terrible when you're out there shopping for anything. but we are doing okay financially. we really are. >> thank you very much. now to a day filled with drama and high emotions at the homicide trial of kyle rittenhouse. the teenager breaking down in tears as he took the stand in his own defense. now the possibility of a mistrial after the judge lashed out at the prosecution. gabe gutierrez joins us from the courthouse in kenosha,

wisconsin, good morning. >> reporter: more defense witnesses are expected today after a wild day at this courthouse, the defendant sobbing, the judge yelling and the defense asking for a mistrial. this morning, kyle rittenhouse's attorneys requesting a mistrial with prejudice in the closely watched case after clashes between the judge and the prosecution. that would mean rittenhouse could not be tried again. the request came after he first took the witness stand, breaking down as he described tense moments last summer when he opened fire, shooting and killing two men and wounding another. the judge calling a short break. rittenhouse's mother in the courtroom sobbing. the dramatic day of testimony coming as the now 18-year-old faces six charges including intentional homicide stemming from last year's protests in

i'm at citi field, home to the new york mets. it's become one of the largest vaccination centers here in new york city. and later on today there will be a line of parents with their kids ages 5 to 11 to get vaccines. meanwhile, the fight against the ban on mask mandates, well, it suffered a blow in texas. a judge in that state declaring the ban against mask mandates unlawful. >> reporter: after months of heated clashes nationwide over masks in schools, a texas judge ruling overnight the state's ban on school mask mandates violates federal law. governor greg abbott issued the order prohibiting schools from requiring students and staff to wear masks before the year started. >> kids will not be forced by government or by schools to wear a mask in school. >> reporter: in a conversation with lester, the cdc director says with vaccines for young kids ramping up, now is not the time to let our guard down.

needed clarity on the investigation calling it complex and saying it will likely take months to learn more. but trusting his responsibility here lies with the families of the eight victims. we're hearing more haunting stories of the concertgoers trapped in a chaotic crowd. >> reporter: with eight deaths and two concertgoers still in critical condition, the houston police chief placed some responsibility for the disaster on travis scott and organizers. >> the ultimate authority to end the show is with production and the entertainer. >> reporter: overnight, scott's attorney speaking out saying there has been multiple finger-pointing much of which has been by city officials who have sent inconsistent messages. the chief is focusing on who knew what when. >> timelines are a major focus of the investigation right now. >> reporter: the first call for mass casualties went out at 9:37 p.m. but organizers did not stop the show until nearly 40 minutes later. because the festival was sanctioned by harris county, nrg

and live nation not the city of houston, authorities say there was no direct communication between organizers and the houston fire department. >> it absolutely creates a delay. >> reporter: the president of houston's firefighter association saying the district fire chief closest to the venue was denied a walk-through the morning of the event. authorities say live nation was responsible for security inside the mosh pits. the promoter had more than 700 personnel on hand. records confirming that are unclear. this is not the first time a live nation event has turned deadly. since 2006, the event promotion company has been connected to multiple deaths and hundreds of lawsuits worldwide. nbc's calls to live nation and the security companies involved in astroworld have not been returned. >> i accepted the fact that i might have died -- >> for gabby, flashbacks to friday night are haunting. the 17-year-old unaware she was recording moments she thought would be her last.

a $626 million settlement for flint residents who were exposed to lead contaminated water. that was back in 2014. the water was not treated to reduce corrosion and as a result, lead broke off through the pipes. 80% of the settlement will be paid to children who were younger than 18 at the time of the water crisis. former south african president f.w. de klerk died this morning at his home. he headed the white minority government until 1994 when nelson mandela's party swept to power. he later shared the nobel peace prize with mandela. he was 85 years old. a spacex rocket launched into orbit last night. >> three, two, one, zero.

silence, a new lawsuit filed by chief lighting director says negligence on the part of producers, crew members and star alec baldwin led to the death of halyna hutchins. >> any responsible actor knows you don't take a real gun, point it at a human being, pull the trigger, shoot a bullet and they die in the answer is, huh, i didn't know it was loaded. >> reporter: he was working directly alongside hutchins and held her as she lost consciousness inside this church in the lawsuit, he says he saw unattended guns laying around on set and claims baldwin should have double-checked the colt revolver with dave halls, the assistant director to ensure it did not contain live ammunition, adding the scene did not call for baldwin to shoot and he should have refrained from

pointing the gun at anyone. >> i still cannot believe that she's not here with us. >> reporter: he says he's not singling out any one person for blame. the suit claims armorer hannah gutierrez-reed loaded the gun before halls handed the weapon to baldwin saying it was safe. the attorney says corners were cut to save cash on the film. >> their conduct was despicable. >> reporter: baldwin had previously said the shooting was an accident and disputed claims the set was unsafe via social media. halls has not released the comment. a new statement from gutierrez-reed says she's convinced this was sabotage and she's being framed. a theory the attorney called extremely suspect. >> to me that sounds unbelievable. >> i tried to save her life. >> reporter: this morning a preventable tragedy and now the first lawsuit filed.

literally millions of them >> it's every kid's dream. >> reporter: more than 80% of imported toys on store shelves in the u.s. are coming from china which is why christmas shoppers this year could be facing a toy shortage. the pandemic triggering a domino effect that started here with chinese factories juggling higher costs, an energy crisis and a shortage of computer chips and shipping rates for exporters that rocketed. >> increased a lot >> yeah. >> how much? >> maybe ten times. >> ten times >> reporter: and there's more, a shortage of shipping containers and covid outbreaks that shut down some major ports here all slowed the flow of chinese-made goods into the global supply chain. then congestion and long delays on the u.s. side, like the logjam at the port of los angeles, have meant a lot of toy shipments are stuck. if they leave the factory at all. because of challenges like high shipping costs, you have toys that could have been sent to the u.s. a month ago, now just piling up.

the highest inflation rate since the 1990 has americans worried about the skyrocketing costs of everything from gas to groceries. tom costello joins us with what is behind the nationwide sticker shock. good morning >> reporter: good morning. this is really a good news, bad news kind of situation the economy is doing really well right now. the stock market is at an all-time high. the unemployment rate is down. but we're all paying for it and we're seeing prices move higher from the gas station, the grocery store, the local shopping mall, the restaurant, really across the board here the consumer price index was upt 6.2% last month. the biggest jump in more than 30 years as the country emerges from the pandemic with exploding demand the trouble is, industries are working overtime and the supply chain, as we've said, simply cannot keep up, stretched all the way to china that's pushing prices higher, just as companies are forced to pay their employees even more and all of those costs getting

passed onto you and me just in the past year, a gallon of milk has climbed 28 cents, a pound of ground beef up 96 cents -- 68 cents. while gas prices have soared more than a dollar, reaching levels we haven't seen since 2014 used cars up a stunning 26%. experts say this is likely to continue into next year because even if that supply chain issue is eventually worked out, those higher prices and wages are going to cause companies to pass all of those costs onto you and me and so even though you may have gotten a raise, the chances are, it's already been eaten up just in the cost of inflation in fact, real wages right now down about 1.5% compared to a year ago, even though a lot of people have already seen a pay hike back to you. >> thank you with the cost of nearly everything going up, saving money wherever you can is the order of the day vicky nguyen is really good at that

let's talk about gas prices. that hits everyone indiscriminately and can add up. >> gas prices are at their highest levels in seven years. we're looking at $3.42 a gallon on average right now consider signing up for a free membership with gas buddy. there's an app, a website. it's absolutely free you just link your debit card and you can save up to 25 cents per gallon and these are gas stations nationwide the next thing to consider and remember is maybe you're a member of costco or sam's club they often have discounted gas prices same thing for grocery stores, they all have gas stations as well try to plan your trips around stopping at those gas stations aaa will say, change the way you drive. don't waste gas warming up the car in the morning group your trips together. those are all small things that you can do, but it will make a difference and help you avoid paying at the pump. >> if you want to save a little money, what do you do?

>> it starts with meal planning for the week so you make a list and you go to the store and you're focused and you don't pick up those extra things on impulse. consumer reports is recommending these apps, flip and basket. what it does is it tells you all of the local grocery stores and it shows you their coupons and their weekly deals all in one place so it's really helpful let's say you're going to do burgers this week, you want to go to the store that has the lowest price on ground beef. that's superhelpful. when you're at the store, i want you to consider buying in bulk chicken thighs are on sale, stock up food is a big part of our budget. >> let's talk about prescription drugs, essential for a lot of folks. it's also hard to skimp on savings there. >> prescription drugs continue to be the most erratic and illogical thing when it comes to pricing, right you can pay ten different prices

channels start a happy accident and i was playing around with my camera, i was watching parks and rec and i was like, what would that burger taste like in real life and i'm talking about it. >> what's your favorite food you've recreated >> i should have studied before i came on here just a simple pasta. >> you're from rochester new york is this a garbage plate? >> this is our pride >> what's the history of this dish in rochester? >> i don't know. somebody was drunk and they put a bunch of stuff in a frying man. >> you want to get it crispy

>> yes it's topped with something called hot sauce which is just a meat sauce that is made from grill scrapings. the crap that they scrape off the flat top >> at the end of the day of making 800 cheeseburgers, they would scrape it off and that would be at the nucleus of this meat sauce >> that's equivalent of taking a bar mat shot we get these crispy. >> we get this crispy. we're going to add a bunch of spices we have cinnamon, all spice, paprika. that gets tossed with tomato paste, stock >> you let the sauce sit on the side for a second. >> let it sit all day, for weeks at a time, even. don't actually do it >> forget about it. >> we parboil our potatoes so you can cook them at a much higher temperature, get them really, really crisp in a cast iron skillet. >> you said it's hard for you to recreate that really crispy -- that you can get at a diner. >> the key is to not overcrowd you want to make sure that everybody is -- has contact with the pan. you're not generating steam by stacking stuff on top --
