hitting the roads and skies as thanksgiving nears. this is "today in the bay." a very good friday morning to you. thank you so much for joining us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we will get to kari in the forecast, but first let's start with mike and breaking news. >> look at the video that we have. this is an overturned rig and all of this damage and debris, and there were no serious injuries as a result of the crash on highway 101 where both directions are down to one lane in novato. folks are being forced off of the freeway or on to the shoulder. northbound has stars strewn across the freeway, and that is

blocking the lanes. the cars involved were the ones on the back of the trailer. kari, we have only one lane open in each direction there, and we have traffic control in the area as well for highway 37. i'll talk about that coming up. over to you. >> you have a lot going on there. we have a little going on here as we look at storm ranger. with spotty showers just moving by, that's about it, we are going to see a slight chance of rain throughout the morning and the afternoon as we weak weather system comes in. we will see the light rain tapering off as we go through the afternoon. we'll have more of that coming

up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. we begin with the heartbreaking story. a mother talking after her daughter was killed while sitting in the passenger side of a moving vehicle, and she died right in front of her two own young boys. >> this is the 77th freeway shooting this year. >> she was beautiful, creative, energetic. >> alicia butler spoke to us by phone in her home in georgia, and she said she face timed her daughter 20 minutes before she was shot and killed. >> my husband, myself, and our grandkids were on the phone and she said i will call you later, and then i started getting phone calls and i didn't want to

believe it was true. >> she and her two boys were in the burgundy suv around 9:00 a.m., heading to san francisco for a second job interview. the 29-year-old was in the passenger seat when somebody fired at the car as it was heading towards the bay bridge toll plaza. alicia is trying to wrap her head that her fiancé and two boys watched it happen. >> that was her world. she did everything for them. >> her son heard the shots. >> he didn't know she was hit. the little boy said, what happened to mommy? my son looked and he noticed she was gone. blood was everywhere. >> the shooting was random and as reminiscent of the death of

jasper wu who was killed on 880 earlier this month. >> we have to stop killing each other. why are we burying the people that are supposed to be our future. >> cheryl hurd on today in the bay. police say a girl was taken by her boyfriend and friend as a joke outside a gas station on santa rosa. we have surveillance video from that gas station. witnesses say they saw the teenager standing on the corner when a man grabbed her and forced her into a dark vehicle. once in the car, she realized she was with her friends and not in danger. then they headed to l.a. for a

schools are taking that could help kids get into schools easier. >> the country shutting down once again because of increasing cases of covid. seems like every day this week we have had to deal with fog throughout the morning and this morning is no different. we are down to a mile and three quarter visibility in santa rosa, but we will talk about where we are seeing rain and what is ahead for the weekend, coming up. traffic flowing west will continue throughout the morning. we are worried about the build through novato, where it was still down to one lane because of cars spilled across the roadway.

it. spotty showers over towards richmond, and it's a hit or miss as you head over to contra costa county. there will be a light dusting of snow over parts of the sierra. this is a warmer system coming in, even though we won't see much of a change in our temperatures for today. we're looking at a cloudy start, and in some spots dealing with patchy dense fog. in walnut creek, we are seeing the clouds that are hanging with us and will stay with us throughout the morning. looking at our hour-by-hour forecast, once again, doesn't show a whole lot going on here. another dud of a weather system because we know we need a lot more rain. we will be better if we got the weather systems coming in that could bring us a quarter inch of

rain. this will quickly move out and we have clear skies in the forecast. temperature wise, low to mid-60s. in some spots, mid-50s. downtown san francisco and our northbound temperatures will only reach into the upper 50s. as we are heading out for the weekend, once again, clearing out and looks really nice. we will see if we could get another chance of rain in here. that's ahead of thanksgiving, which is pretty dry. only a slight chance on tuesday, and next week it looks good for your holiday travels. mike, what is the update on the breaking news? >> the breaking news is the big deal in the north bay. the smaller crashes are on the shoulder in the east bay. just a couple of them. the nuisance rain did hit the

north bay and that's where this crash is, and the driver driving southbound on the 101 with the car hauler fell asleep and hit the center divide and that scattered the cars on the roadways. over a dozen cars need to be cleared. here's a popular cut through if you are traveling between 37 and 101. back to you. this morning in wisconsin, jurors are starting their fourth day of deliberations in the kyle rittenhouse homicide trial after killing two and injuring one. the state's national guard have been put on standby ahead of the
