lives in georgia is remembering her daughter as a dedicated mother. she was face timing her 20 myself and the grandkids were on the phone, and she said i will call you later. then i started getting phone calls and i didn't want to believe it was true. that was her world, she did everything for them. she was a good mom. >> chp is investigating and are not releasing any information on a suspect or suspect vehicle. news of the deadly shooting comes as family and friends are scheduled to say good-bye to jasper wu who was killed when a stray bullet killed him on i-80

three weeks ago. according to chp, there have been at least 77 highway shootings, including the shooting -- the one along i-80 yesterday in alameda county in this past highway were shutdown yesterday as chp investigated that shooting, and it's now back open for the morning commute. >> it's senseless. >> yeah, kids were in the car and had to see that. that's a lot of trauma there. a lot of loss. thank you, cierra. two violent new attacks in san francisco are leaving the asian-american community there on edge. first one happened in laurel heights on tuesday. that's when an 84-year-old man was struck with a bottle after he used an atm. he did not want his name used but he now tells the nbc bay area that he suffered a nasal

insecurity. >> who are these people? >> hunger has no face. these are your neighbors, seniors, adults, children. the need is very varied as to who it is impacting? >> yeah, we are not out of the storm. this is still going to be a very big issue going not only throughout the holidays but into the new year. we are working with our community partners to make sure everybody is getting a meal. >> not only are our cost going up, and we're seeing up to 17% increases in a lot of the core items, and it's taking a lot of time to get items to the food bank.

right now. how is it looking for us this morning? >> not a lot, as we just said. i was talking yesterday about how la nina brings about 93% the normal of rain, and that's just a little below normal, and that's what the weak showers are bringing through. we need storm ranger because the rain is so light it's hard to detect here as we are seeing it falling across marin, and we could see the spotty light rain elsewhere across the bay area. this moisture rolls on through. it will bring in light rain elsewhere across the region from the central valley to parts of the sierra, and some snow for those very high elevations. we will talk more about this moving out and what is ahead for the weekend, coming up. mike, you have been watching the north bay. it is improving there? >> highway 37, the rainun car h

we can see the rain on the radar right now. most of the rest of the bay area not getting in on the action, but we are seeing this weak storm system just passing by and bringing in light rain for our friday morning. so as we look at the models, they just pretty much show more of the same as we go into the 7:00 to 8:00 hour, but by 10:00 or 11:00, it's starting to clear out. we could see more sunshine at that time go into the rest of the day with drier weather, but it's going to stay cool as a result of all the clouds. we are only looking at highs in the upper 50s and low 60s today. 57 in san rafael, and half moon bay. going into our long range forecast, we do have sunny skies for the weekend and a little warmer, but we will see one more system passing by. it may bring additional snow showers to the sierra, and that could be a little bit of a boost ahead of the thanksgiving

the progress. they have to clean up the cars and move that rig. fortunately, that's the onlyinc. kari, we w it rain? >> i like to call it nuisance rain, mike, because it's just so light. it's really not helping anything out. it's just causing more problems as we are seeing some of the light showers in parts of the north bay. we have seen it around marin county, moving over towards contra costa county. as you are heading out, windshield wipers could be needed in some spots but not everywhere as the weak system passes by. when this moves out we could get some sunshine. we'll talk about in that a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. happening today, bay area kaiser facilities bracing for what could be the wider strike so far this week.

more workers are organizing actions to show solidarity with striking engineers. >> kris sanchez is live. >> reporter: yeah, so there's no question this is going to have an impact on patient care. we just got notice that another unionized group of nurses will join the picket lines along with the mental health clinicians that said they would be on the picket lines today with the engineers as well. throughout the 63-day strike, nurses have supported them, and support staff have come out, and they are calling for a fair contract. kaiser management claims their engineers earn an average of $180,000 and benefits a year,

patients are in the middle. >> we are ready to go back to work. we are hard workers. we don't want this. we want what is fair. that's all. >> we have contingency plans in place. >> if you are a kaiser patient, the ers and hospitals will remain open no matter how long the strike goes on, but care will be managed by managers and contingency staff, and nonurgent appointments will be postponed. that is set to get under way at 6:00 this morning, not just here in san josé, but in santa rosa, sacramento, and other smaller operations around the bay.

5:34. breaking now, moderna just announced the fda granted emergency use authorization for its covid booster shot forever one over 18. regulators are also debating authorization for pfizer and there are reports that that will happen, too, this as the cdc advisory panel picks up the discussion today, and the term fully vaccinated may soon evolve to cover that third shot. one bay area infectious disease expert said it could be tricky to manage that. >> you have two doses there, and then one eight months later, and are you eligible? it's very difficult to enforce. >> of course california is one of a handful of states expanding booster shots to cover everyone over 18. if you have questions, our consumer team broke it down. you can find the full video

there on nbcbayarea.com right there on the trending bar. an east bay family tearfully pleading for the return of their car. this is near kennedy high school in richmond. the dog's name fluffy, he got out of the yard and came back. a woman follows him in. that dog eventually goes back into the kennel, and then the woman takes him. making matters worse, the family says fluffy, 18 years old and needs medical attention. >> he's only had one family. we kind of want him back. i'm sorry. he was just a cool family dog and we want him back. >> the family doesn't know who that woman is. they filed a police report and have checked in with multiple animal shelters and hospitals, but so far no sign of fluffy. >> i hope they get that dog back. >> okay.

we start out today with temperatures in the low 60s. it will get warmer as we go into saturday and sunday. if you are staying there all weekend long, you will see nicer weather after today, even low 70s for santa cruz and for muir woods, we are looking at cloudy skies, and the weekend hikes will be perfect. we are going to see the sunshine continue with highs in the low 60s. for warmer weather, head to paso robles where we will see temperatures in the 70s throughout the weekend, and mid-70s for sunday and 76 by the end of the weekend. yosmite will be nice for a weekend hike there. we are looking at highs of about 60 degrees on saturday, and 65 for a high on sunday. we'll talk about the little bit of rain we're getting right now coming up in a few minutes. mike, what is the breaking news in the north bay? >> if you didn't hear about it, it's breaking news, but if you did, it's continuing news on

for parts of the east bay, and for the rest of the day it gradually starts to move out. you can see the overall picture of what is happening here with the light rain moving across the region. we will see some of the rain start to taper off for the rest of the day and it's moving over towards the sierra with light rain. you can make plans to head out to the park today and enjoy time outside. in morgan hill, our temperatures reach in the mid-60s today. it will be a cool morning with low 50s to start. looking at the south bay high temperatures, expected to reach up to 63 in san josé, and 65 in gilroy. mainly some low 60s for much of the east bay with oakland staying in the upper 50s today. for the coastline, we are also in the upper 50s this afternoon. 59 in san mateo. half moon bay, 57. 57 also in engel side. once again, it's a cool start to
