the sweeping bill. but it happened. and now that bill heads to the senate. >> this morning, a big step forward for president biden's agenda with democrats passing his $1.75 trillion build back better bill. it still faces an uphill battle in the senate. >> the build back better bill is passed! >> it comes after a dramatic delay in the house vote. republicans throwing an unprecedented curve ball, disrupting plans to pass the landmark legislation for hours. kevin mccarthy rising to speak thursday evening and going and going and going. lasting well into the morning. and aiming to stall plans to vote on the sweeping bill which would direct over a trillion dollars to social change programs and climate measures. the tensions on the house floor palpable. >> it's all right. i've got all night. >> reporter: mccarthy railing against the build back better

good morning, sam. >> hoda, good morning, look, it is the timing of the storms that troubling right in the heart of what might be the busiest travel week in years. this is as many air line, hoda, are still not back to full staffing. at airports nationwide, passengers are trying to get a leg up ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. did you make a decision to travel now so you don't have to deal with whatever craziness -- >> absolutely. i figured next week would be too crazy. >> reporter: shake off some preflight jitters, many flying for the first time since covid brought travel to a stand still. >> it's a little nerve-racking. we have lots of hand sanitizers, lots of lysol, lots of face masks. >> reporter: ending potentially a record week of holiday travel with nearly 4 million people expected to take to the skies and severe weather about to strike a huge swath of the country, starting with the midwest and great lakes on sunday. chicago, a hub for united and detroit, a hub for delta said to be slammed first along with

pittsburgh, nashville and maybe even new orleans. that same system then likely to reek havoc along the east coast. in recent months, bad weather and a lack of staffing, canceling thousands of flights. kathleen bangs is a former commercial pilot that tracks for flight aware. >> it's not just pilots and flight attendants. it's also ground crews. you've got to have baggage handlers. you've got to have ticket agents. you've got to have people that drive the fuel truck. >> reporter: as airlines beef up the employee reserves using incentives over the holidays, airports from boston to miami say they're ready for the rush. >> we're in it now and we've been prepared for the last week and a half because we've seen an uptick in passenger volume. >> reporter: what are your expectations in terms of the number of people coming through m.i.a. next week? >> we're expecting an 11% increase compared to 2019. so we're expecting a record number of passengers, not just since the pandemic, but ever for

this airport. >> reporter: and airlines are getting better about canceling flights earlier, but if you are delayed, there is virtually nothing, guys, that you can't do on your phone or online. you do not need to wait on a phone line for hours at a time. >> that's some good advice there, sam. thank you. al, you're the man of the hour. what are you got on your map? >> the west coast storm that we were worried about for thanksgiving, not quite so bad. bad news is saturday evening, we look at this storm developing in southern canada. it's going to move quickly to the east. it's going to bring rain into the midwest by sunday. rain showers developing along this coast. snow starting to develop on the backside of the system. then as we move into monday, storm system moves up into canada, but intensifies. the east coast will be looking at showers monday . lake-effect snow with very strong winds. it's not so much the precip along the coast, but it will be those winds. tuesday, lake-effect snow will continue. scattered snow showers for the

east. areas of heavy lake-effect snow some places lee ward side of the great lakes could see up to a foot possible. the coldest air and windchills of the season. airports will be hit in boston for rain and wind. gusty winds in new york and washington. cleveland, snow and wind. gusty in cincinnati, another hub. nashville, showers. chicago, gusty winds. if you've got a high profile vehicle like a van or anything like that on the roads, it's going be a problem, as well. the good news is it should clear out by tuesday evening, wednesday and thursday looking very nice for the parade. >> oh, good. al, thank you. this could be a game-changing day in the battle against the coronavirus. with cases starting to rise once again and the holiday season upon us, the fda is expected to okay covid vaccine booster shots from pfizer and moderna today for all adults. nbc's anne thompson joins us now with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as americans finalize their

thanksgiving plans, the big question for millions is will i be able to get a covid booster shot? that answer for right now, at least, depends on where you live. but that could very soon change. their decision will change. breaking news, the fda approvaling fuser and moderna's booster shots for all vaccinated adults 18 and over. the next step is for approval from the cdc which meets today. then all american adults can finally get that third shot. a green light that could lead to a holiday rush for jabs. >> well, i'm going home for thanksgiving on saturday night. so i was hoping to get it before then. >> we are at a time where boosters will make a difference, especially considering that boosters' effectiveness occurs immediately. that is important as people start to travel next week for the holidays. >> reporter: at least 15 states have expanded or plan to expand boosters for all adults. massachusetts joining the growing list. >> i think the main reason to do

it is it's one more piece of protection against covid. >> reporter: driving the booster need in massachusetts daily cases are the highest since february. >> as long as, like, the fda approves it, i trust that system and i think i would definitely get it as soon as i possibly could. >> reporter: but who should get it? this advice from connecticut governor ned lamont. >> i think if you haven't been vaccinated or in, you know, more than six months, now is the time to get the booster. >> reporter: with states, cities and the federal government saying different things about who is eligible for boosters, many people are confused. >> i think it was a big missed opportunity, the mixed messaging around this. >> reporter: as for children, the white house says 2.6 million kids ages 5 to 11 have gotten their first dose of the vaccine. 10% in the first two weeks of eligibility. and here is something else to keep in mind. the white house says enough boosters for all adults have already been purchased.

so there shouldn't be a wait for doses like we saw when the first shots were rolled out. keep in mind, your effectiveness goes up to 95% when you get that booster. hannah and savannah? jury deliberations in the double homicide trial of kyle rittenhouse entering a fourth day. and in georgia, clos next week in the ahmaud arbery case. we have on that case in a moment. tom llamas is at the courthouse for us in kenosha. come, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. so 23 hours of talking and still no decision. we know the defense attorneys in this case are anxious, like so many watching this. kyle rittenhouse hoping to be acquitted while the families of the men he shot and killed are looking for justice. all of this as law enforcement hopes to keep the peace as we wait a verdict. this morning in kenosha, new preparations ahead of a possible verdict.

five local schools moving all classes to virtual learning as a precaution. outside the court, kenosha's sheriff handing out cookies for peace, hoping gestures like that and the freezing temperatures here keep crowds at bay. are you worried about what is going to happen to your city when the verdict comes down? >> i'm always worried. i've been worried about any city for 40 years. do i think anything major is going to happen? i don't think anything will happen at all. >> reporter: the sheriff telling me no one wants a repeat of what happened in 2020 when riots broke out in the wake of the police shooting of jacob blake. during that unrest, a then 17-year-old kyle rittenhouse shot and killed two men and wounded a third. rittenhouse maintaining his life was in danger. you did speak about the riots that happened last year. kenosha, did you learn from that? >> i think we all learned from it. it was a time we don't want to go through again. that's why i think i'm out here now. >> reporter: earlier, the judge banning msnbc from the courtroom

for the remainder of the trial after kenosha police entered a traffic citation to a freelancer who the judge said was traveling near a van carrying members of the jury. >> someone who was following a jury bus, that is a very -- that's an extremely serious matter and will be referred to the proper authorities for further action. >> reporter: in a statement, nbc news says the freelancer never contacted or intended to contact the jurors during deliberations. and never photographed or intended to photograph them. the five men and seven women now in their fourth day of analyzing evidence. as day three wrapped up thursday, one juror asking to take their jury instructions home which the judge granted. so with that, we start day four here in kenosha. i spoke with a former wisconsin state prosecutor who says in self-defense cases, the longer the jury takes, the less hopeful

it looks for rittenhouse. he says kyle rittenhouse may be down, but he is not out, savannah, as you know, anything can happen. >> craig is here. we have another big trial we're following. we are. good morning to you. the ahmaud arbery case, three men accused of confronting him and killing him. the jury there now set to get that case early next week and they'll get it in the wake of a final day of dramatic testimony. nbc's ron allen has been covering this one from the beginning. he joins us this morning from brunswick, georgia. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. the defense case lasted less than two full days. the then closing arguments are set for monday and jury deliberations are expected to follow right after that. when the jurors will determine whether the three men charged with killing ahmaud arbery are innocent or guilty. >> i'm very confident that we will get a guilty verdict. very confident. >> reporter: ahmaud arbery's mother hopeful for justice as all parties rested their cases

in the trial of three men charged with killings her son. >> no, he did not threaten me verbally, no, ma'am. >> didn't brandish any weapons >> no, ma'am >> reporter: during cross examination, spending hours that he, his father and a neighbor tried to detain arbery because he suspected he was involved in a string of local robberies. >> didn't pull out any knife >> no, ma'am >> never reached for anything, did he >> no. >> he just ran >> yes, he was just running. >> reporter: mcmichael testified at one point arbery attacked the pickup truck and that he acted in self-defense fearing he and his father would be next >> he was acting weird he was acting funny when i was trying to talk to him prior. so i'm on alert. >> so you're telling this jury that a man who has spent five minutes running away from you, you're now thinking is somehow

going to want to continue to engage with you, someone with a shotgun, and your father, a man who has just said stop or i'll [ bleep ] head off by trying to get in their truck >> that's what it shows, yes, ma'am. >> reporter: just as testimony was ending, hundreds converged on the courthouse, including black pasters, there in response to the repeated attempts to limit the number of clergy arbery's family could invite in the court suggesting it could bias the jury, suggesting those from the neighborhood where arbery was killed, highlighting their concerns about crime >> did there become a moment when you yourself became a victim of a crime? >> yes, i did. >> reporter: disappointing arbery's mother. all three defendants are charged with murder for acting together to imprison arbery and cause his death. they all face the possibility of life in prison if convicted.

at least eight states this morning putting pressure on instagram. now under investigation for how it affects its youngest users. a bipartisan group of attorneys general looking into how the popular photo sharing app's parent company, meta, formerly facebook, gets teens to use and stay on its platform and the, quote, resulting harms of such extended engagement. they're focussing on whether the company's actions violated consumer protection laws >> did they try to keep children and young adults on the platform longer children and young adults left the platform, did they seek to bring them back? all of those are the types of techniques that would be of interest if they existed >> meta, overnight, telling nbc news the investigation is based on a deep misunderstanding of the facts and that the company leads the industry in supporting young users online they also point to changes to instagram, including the take a

break future that's now being tested and ways to nudge users toward other content if they're focused on one topic instagram has also pressed pause on its planned instagram kids app for children under the required age of 13 the new investigation comes just weeks after explosive allegations from a facebook whistle-blower who told congress instagram knew its app was toxic for teens, especially teen girls. that whistle-blower provided internal research to the "wall street journal," including one 2019 slide that read we make body images worse for one in three teen girls dr. suzi mcnulty says she's seen it herself, especially since the pandemic >> we have seen a huge rise in eating disorders in our preteens and teens. it's like basically handing your child a dangerous weapon >> it's just so addicting. you can get sucked into it easily >> reporter: facebook at the time called th claims about the research that appeared in the "wall street journal" a mischaracterization adding that one-third statistic was based on girls already

some of my favorite stories, of course, the hoits, the legendary, the late dick hoit and rick hoit, just an incredible father/son team running the boston marathon, having done countless marathons and triathlons, and being able to do my first boston marathon and knowing that they were going the be able to cross that finish line for the last time together there, as well it was so special. and the chilean miners, i will never forget being there for a couple of weeks and covering it. it really just -- you know, that moment, it was being able to tell a good news story which we don't get to do so often >> you do that so well, though when you're called upon to have a great skill set, watching that, you realize how great you are at everything. >> oh, thank you >> you're like the avengers all in one no matter what the task, what the story, you were there. the all of them.
