minutes. >> 5:00 right now. new overnight, word of more robberies and break-ins around the bay area. adding to what's already been a hectic few days of organized thefts targeting retailers. bob redell will dive deeper into the latest cases in our next half hour. >> overnight police responding to an apparent robbery at an oakland walgreens. this is new video. you can see police officers talking to that person, taking them into custody. this happened around midnight at the walgreens on high street near macarthur. it also shows a broken glass door. we've reached out to oakland police. so far they're not providing any information. >> about two hours later, oakland police responded to a marijuana dispensary. new video shows police investigating ecocannabis on telegraph avenue. officers can be seen entering through a broken steel gate. still not clear what, if

anything, was taken. about 24 hours after police say more than ten people broke into a dispensary on pendleton way, this is overnight on saturday. actually tried stealing a large amount of marijuana. two security guards confronted them, shots were fired. one suspected thief was shot and is now in stable condition. the other suspect ran off. the dispensary was one of several that were targeted. it's unknown if the case is related. oakland police chief leron armstrong plans to address the recent increase in crime including more details about the deadly police shooting in rock ridge saturday afternoon. it started with a carjacking in east oakland on fisher avenue near macarthur. officers later shot the suspect on ocean view drive near broadway in upper rock ridge. police say the suspect initially fired at officers and at the end of the chase tried to ram police patrol cars before officers killed him. no officers were injured.

the suspect, rather, has not been identified. now to a live look at sfo this morning. the travel rush is on with thanksgiving just three days away. there are growing concerns about the shortage of security screeners at our nation's airports. today it is the deadline for federal workers, including tsa agents to show that they are fully vaccinated. and with covid cases already on the rise in some parts of the country, the nation's health officials really worry about another holiday surge. today in the bay's chris pollone live in washington. those officials are actually urging people to get the booster shots. >> yeah, they certainly are ever since the cdc decision on friday. with 50 million americans expected to travel this week, the nation's top health officials hoped that a lot of them are planning to head to get a covid vaccine shot before they hit the road or head to the airport. across the country, the push to get americans vaccinated either through first shots or boosters.

health officials are still hoping to head off a winter holiday surge. >> get it before thanksgiving. make sure that when you sit down at that thanksgiving table with the people you love, you have the highest level of immunity to protect them. >> reporter: new covid cases are up 50% since late october. >> 11 yeses and zero nos. >> reporter: and friday the cdc approved booster shots for all adults over 18. >> the vaccines themselves clearly are still highly effective, but you want to make sure the durability of that protection is longer. and that's the reason why you get boosted. >> reporter: today is the deadline for federal workers to be vaccinated. low immunization rates in the tsa have fueled fears theref se screeners this week at the nation's airports. but the transportation secretary says those fears are unfounded. >> i have seen no indication the vaccine requirements are going to impact travel in any way. >> reporter: the number of daily vaccinations in the u.s. has nearly doubled in the past month but more than 60 million americans still remain

unvaccinated. the president's top covid adviser says those who are should enjoy a traditional thanksgiving celebration. >> if you are vaccinated and hopefully you'll be boosted, too, and your family is, you can enjoy a typical thanksgiving meal, thanksgiving holiday with your family. there's no reason not to do that. >> reporter: longing for normal in a time that's been anything but. here's a great example of the confusing times we live in. today washington, d.c., is dropping its indoor mask mandate while the next county over in maryland this past weekend reinstated its mask mandate. marcus? >> they connect. so that's really close contact there. all right. chris, i want to ask you this before you go about the federal workers and contractors. what happens to them if the discipline action. so today is the deadline, but o

that there will be a process for these government employees, all government employees really, who refuse to get vaccinated. first they can apply for religious or medical exemptions, and if they don't have those, then it will take some time to either suspend or fire them. that's why i suspect the transportation secretary said he didn't anticipate any staffing problems this week. >> looks like smooth sailing when it comes to travel this weekend. all right, chris, thank you. san jose leaders are trying to broker peace among taxi drivers and a new dispatch company arranging cab service at va netta airport. the contracted company called safer is changing fee collection from drivers and launching a dress code requiring them to wear neck ties, dress shoes and gloves. the independent cab drivers have now refused the service and -- to service the airport until a new deal is reached. safer is said to be a brazilian company with no prior experience in u.s. airports.

5:06. happening today, santa cruz will officially go back into mask mode requiring everyone to mask up indoors regardless of their vaccination status. you may recall back in september, santa cruz dropped that mandate thank to its slow spread of covid. now santa cruz county has a high enough spread that it's firmly in the cdc's second worst tier. california's hovering right now between high and substantial on the cdc's map. we're starting to see some progress in the bay area. five of our nine counties are now in the moderate tier moving in the right direction. this includes san francisco, san mateo, contra cost aalameda and marin counties. that means for at least a week they've reported fewer than 50 cases per every 100,000 people. the rest of the bay area is in orange, which means substantial. the second worst criteria. with the statewide drought wearing on, san francisco is the latest bay area city asking

people to cut back on water use. they'll discuss asking customers to reduce water use by 5% compared to what they used two years ago. and also is planning to ask communities that buy water from san francisco to slash their use by 14%. those reductions won't be enforced and no penalties will be applied. 5:08. taking a live look outside. beautiful illuminated bay bridge this morning. clear, cold start in many parts of the bay area. kari has a look at the forecast. >> i wanted to show you another view because it's a clear start this morning. we've seen the patches of fog drifting around parts of the north bay. as you cross the golden gate bridge, visibility is clear. for the east bay, it's chilly. pleasant hill and the temperatures you'll feel as you head off for work. upper 30s. we'll see those temperatures warming up fairly quickly. and still a little chilly at noon. 60 degrees. headed for the mid to upper 60s. and livermore, we'll see a high

of 67 there as well as 67 in napa. and 72 in san jose. i think this weather will continue throughout the week. we'll talk more about that in a new minutes. >> some are clearing and some are arriving. a crew arrived right on schedule on the san rafael side of the bridge. this is the bridge to san rafael picking up a few more cars. light traffic flow. watch for the crews. only one lane in each direction for each of those decks there. no slowing shows up just yet. smooth flow of traffic for all of these commute routes. commuting longer routes out of antioch for highway 4 and vasco road toward 580. a clear drive for these folks. no major problems. crews have cleared from the san mateo side but still a little bit for 101. they continue to work on the express lanes. >> thank you very much. coming up here, with the holiday shopping about to hit overdrive, the key changes retailers are making just to ensure that your items arrive on

time friday for a half day. market got pretty -- got hit pretty hard. it's a monday. part of the concern is coronavirus. more shutdowns like austria. wall street's taking that shortened work week, large silicon valley companies, mostly take this week off. not that that many people go to the office anyway. san francisco scribe is the most recent can be to say it's going to sublease its headquarters according to the "san francisco business times." president biden is expected to reveal who he wants to run the federal reserve for the next four years. the current fed chair jay powell sees his term expire in february. it's entirely possible biden will renominate him to the post. there he is on the le it's also possible biden will nominate lael brainerd. their economic approaches are pretty similar, though brainerd is seen as more of a dove, less likely to raise interest rates. powell initially nominated by trump who chose to replace janet

yellen. trump seemed to think powell would do what trump wanted. he was wrong about that. yellen on the left. now the secretary of the treasury. the music service spotify has removed one of the shuffle buttons on the artist albums after singer adele objected saying her album was meant to be listened in order, as are most albums. you can still shuffle her new release, 30, if you wanted to, but looking at the statistics, most people are streaming her "easy on me" which is one-third of the way to the number of the total number of listens of "rolling in the deep" which is actually quite old. that's amazing. most artists think you ought to listen to their album in order and the way they did it the same way you wouldn't shuffle a book on tape. >> nowadays you can just pick any song. >> it's easy nowadays which apparently drives artists crazy. >> in the old days we'd put the needle on the record. >> just listen. use your imagination. >> put your record on.

let's go to the south bay with a look at our high temperatures this afternoon. cupertino reaching 70 degrees and 73 in morgan hill. for the east bay, we'll see some upper 60s, even mid-60s for antioch, oakland and hayward in the upper 60s today. and 68 in san mateo. and in san francisco, it's mostly in the mid-60s but we'll see some lower 60s in the outer sunset. for the north bay, expect a high of 70 in santa rosa and novato. and it's, of course, going to be nice weather for mike and kristi yamaguchi tonight for the downtown ice in san jose. temperatures in the mid-60s. light long sleeves for the evening. maybe keep bundling it up if you'll be out there for a while. it's a big travel day, big travel week. and as of now, there are no airport delays anywhere across the country but we will have to watch out for the east oast where there's been some rain moving through. we'll see that moving out and then it looks like it's going to be fairly dry as we go into the

next couple of days. and we're even seeing a storm system approaching, but by the time it gets here, that rain dries up and that's going to be the case for us throughout the week. even though there will be some showers nearby farther off towards the north. we will not see anything going on here and then with the dry weather all week long you think, okay, how is our rainfall surplus doing? and for the water year, we are still seeing a surplus, but it's getting smaller. we've seen it shrink every single day, every day that passes without rain our surplus is getting smaller. so looking at our temperatures this week with all of that sunshine, we do have some nice travel weather, family gathering weather, dinner outside weather, whatever you plan on doing this week. we'll see those 60s not only for the inland areas but san francisco as well. mike, you're expecting a lighter commute, aren't you? >> we are. the morning commute should be lighter. afternoons and evenings get a lot more complicated if folks are traveling around across town. looking at the south bay

stores this weekend robbing them of their merchandise. and there's word those thieves are targeting more stores. they did it last night. >> bob redell joins us live in walnut creek where police are shutting down a main road on broadway plaza after this chaos that's making national headlines, bob. >> correct. good morning. you can see broadway plaza. this is the street that runs through the broadway plaza shopping center that includes the nordstroms that was hit saturday night. it's still shut down here this monday morning. and there's an officer posted down the street there just to keep an eye for any activity. walnut creek police posted on social media a warning you are looking at about the possibility of another robbery last night. some high end shops like tiffany's asked customers to leave early so they could close early. nordstrom's remained closed. but as far as we know, yesterday was quiet. on saturday night, around 80 people according to a police estimate ransacked the nordstrom

department store. it was like a well-organized operation. people sprinted to waiting cars carrying bags full of merchandise. three people have been arrested. all were charged with robbery. one of them is also charged with being a felon in possession of a gun. nbc bay area obtained a still image from a security camera inside that nordstrom that was taken during the robbery. five of their employees were assaulted and injured. police say one was pepper sprayed. this morning, hayward police are investigating a smash and grab at sam's jewelry at the southland mall in hayward. took place around 5:30. at least nine people broke into that store. they used hammers to smash drove off. police are looking for a group of people who robbed a lululemon store at santana row in san jose. it's a store that sells high end athletic apparel. in san francisco, police have arrested eight people in connection with robberies of nine stores in that city friday

night, including a number of retailers in or around union square that were burglarized or vandalized. at a press conference saturday, mayor breed said her police foreseeable future and there could be changes for drivers in or around union square. reporting live in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> retailers need the money. they need people to come shopping, but i don't know that i'd want to take my family out right now. >> scary. thank you, bob. 5:34 this morning. developing in wisconsin, waukesha police say at least five people are dead after a car ran into a holiday parade sunday evening. >> the video shot from overhead shows the moment a vehicle ran into a crowd of people. police say they do have a suspect in custody. nbc's tom llamas reports terrorism does not seem to be a motive. >> reporter: good morning. behind me, police are still on

the scene here trying to figure out the why. why someone would do this. they tell us around 4:30 yesterday as the streets were packed with families, packed with spectators for this holiday parade, a driver broke through barricades and got right onto main street. started plowing into people, hitting all different groups, including kids who were dancing and marching, along with another group called the dancing grannys. we also know that a priest from the archdiocese of milwaukee was also hit. and there were so many victims here that people literally had to just scoop up their loved ones and rush over to the hospital because there were not enough ambulances. right now we're being told by several people who have been briefed on the investigation that terror -- terrorism does not seem to be a motive. the driver was fleeing some type of knife fight from earlier in the night. there will be a press conference later this afternoon where we'll have more information. unfortunately so far, five people have died. and there are 40 people injured and all across this community, they are praying those people who are in the hospital survive.

that's the latest here from waukesha. back to you guys. >> thank you, tom. a live look at the federal courthouse in san jose where elizabeth holmes criminal fraud trial is at a critical and surprising stage. happening today, she'll return to the stand testifying in her own defense. at the end of the day friday, the defense called the theranos founder. she talked about her time at stanford and how her early career exploded. many did not expect to risk her testifying on her own behalf. prosecutors have the chance to cross-examine her about her failed company and its faulty blood testing technology. follow the reporting of the theranos trial online. click on elizabeth holmes trial coverage. one man hoping to change policies at a golf course to protect drivers. we're not talking about the drivers you find in your golf bag. we're talking about drivers along adjacent highway 101 near 237 interchange in sunnyvale.

a stray golf ball from the sunnyvale municipal golf course recently struck his car and his dash cam captured it. you can see it right here. take a look right there. he said it really scared him and his wife. especially in light of recent freeway shootings. >> we've just got scared for a minute because it was loud. it was like a boom. >> reporter: he says now he has to fix a small dent in his car and hopes something more can be done to make sure those golf balls don't stray. the golf course only told him to submit the repair claim and to do that with the city of sunnyvale. to the pandemic, and two weeks into the wider covid vaccination rollout. bay area counties have some of the highest rates in the state for 5 to 11-year-olds. looking at the dash board, about 10% now partially vaccinated statewide. you can see bay area county rates are about double that. in marin, it's three times as

high at 30%. >> look at that. live look outside at the golden gate bridge this morning. simply beautiful. yeah. not a cloud in sight at least in that shot this morning. clear start to our day which means it's a chilly start as well. >> yeah, you need to bundle up as you head out. we've seen mostly clear conditions for many of our microclimates heading out in oakland, a good drive for you. it's just one you have to turn on the heater. upper 40s right now. we'll see it warming up as we go into today in a mostly sunny sky. oakland headed for 68 degrees. napa reaching 67. and in san jose, some low 70s. livermore reaching 67 and palo alto headed for 70 degrees. really comfortable afternoon but, yes, a cold start. we'll talk about more of what's going on coming up. >> we said it would be lighter but didn't say there would be no commute. a little more traffic. easily building across the span. it's right here at the curve

where you get the volume check there. and that's moving smoothly but a little more clustering going on there. a little slowing as you approach the incline for the bay bridge. no metering lights. they may turn on right now. highway 37, a little slowing as well. easy drive including out of the altamont pass. san jose, the beginnings of what we see north 101, just a bit of slowing kicked in in the past two minutes. typical for 101 through this stretch. i'm also focusing on right here, 87 near 280. that's downtown san jose. what's happening tonight, folks posted this on social media. look at the video that we have. on facebook, we posted from a few years ago when i was on the ice with olympic ice skating champion kristi yamaguchi, we were standing. but we'll be teaming up tonight as we do almost every year outside the circle of palms there right by the san jose museum of modern art. kristi yamaguchi downtown ice in san jose. 25th year for this outdoor skating rink. we'll be there with special

>> smooth traffic flow as well. 101 with a little more traffic than the last time we focused on this portion through palo alto. all the construction crews through san mateo county, caltrans tells us they've picked up and cleared roadways. that's great for your monday. we'll show you how that commute is shaping up. it's 5:44 right now. southern california community mourning the death of a 13-year-old boy shot and killed while playing video games in his home. he died from a stray bullet through his window saturday night in pasadena. his death is sparking not only so much grief but a growing memorial outside of his home. they are raising questions about gun safety from the chief of police. >> he's a straight-a student. he spends all his time inside his room with his family. and today he's not there. so we have to ask ourselves, what we want to do about this as a community with the gun violence.

this needs to stop. >> the pasadena chief believes the gunfire may be the product of a recent surge in gang violence in pasadena, including other shootings over the past few weeks. the identity of the shooter is still a mystery. former las vegas raiders receiver henry rugs is back in court this morning. this is to answer new allegations. he's currently under house arrest accused in a recent deadly high-speed chase dui crash in las vegas. but a judge ordered him back in court after he missed a required at-home breath sobriety test last week. his attorney blamed it on faulty testing equipment. he said that ruggs later self-tested on his own but the agency monitoring him says that it could not confirm sobriety. "the washington post" is reporting president biden plans to run for a second term in 2024. >> scott mcgrew, that's not an unusual plan. >> you could argue johnson served just one term of his own.

polk, coolidge, they settled for one term. carter and trump ran but american voters said one was enough. "the washington post" reports biden has told insiders he plans to run for that second term. that does raise questions about his age. he would be 81 at the start of his next term, if he ran and won. biden is already our oldest president at time of election. trump the second oldest. reagan was a spry 69 when elected for third place. if you are old enough you recall mr. reagan clearly struggled with age at the end of his second term. he was 77 at the time, a year younger than president biden is now. normally incumbent presidents don't talk about re-election this early. first it's just part of the plan. second it might take money away from candidates the president wants to win like in the midterms which is why any talk seems to be behind closed doors. a lot of people wonder who would run if biden didn't or maybe they'd run anyway. two of the top contenders are

the vice president harris and recently transportation secretary pete buttigieg. he was asked about that supposed rivalry on "meet the press." >> has it at all impangted your relationship with the vice president that it seems as if there's this narrative of a rivalry developing between the two of you? >> no, because she and i are part of a team that is disciplined. and doesn't focus on what's obsessing the commentators. we're too busy with a job to do. >> president biden will likely tell us today or tomorrow who he wants to serve for the next term as chair of the federal reserve. we'll talk more about that as we talk business in a half an hour. he leaves for vacation for thanksgiving tuesday afternoon. congress is already off. when it comes back there's a lot to do like funding the government. the government run out of money days after congress returns december 3rd. even if congress a few

the vaccine mandate in florida. the governor there last week signed a measure banning workplace orders. in a statement disney said it still b vaccinations are the right approach and more than 90% of its workers in florida are vaccinated. leaders did meet with the white house regarding the workplace mandate fearing it may worsen its labor shortage. happening today in san francisco, a new exhibit opening up showing off the life and works of an underground street artist who has gained fame creating revolutionary pieces. the mysterious banksy. >> today in the bay's cierra johnson live at the palace of fine arts with what to expect when you open those doors. i'm sure we're in for a treat this morning. >> yes, good morning. i can tell you just firsthand, this is a huge exhibit. took me about ten minutes to wander through the halls to even find the photographer, as well as the co-producer of this awesome exhibit. weeks it's taken to set this up.

i guess the first question, why banksy. of all the artists, why banksky. >> good morning. thanks for being here. first and foremost, banksy, nobody knows who he is. the mystique is amazing on its own. we think he's a very unique pop icon rather than just an artist. so we thought that it would be fantastic to bring this exhibit to north america and have people come up close and personal with banksy's works. >> i read there were some other banksy exhibits. how is this one different than some of the other ones that may be popping up across the country? >> so we're the first in north america. this is a very unique collection. there's over 90 original -- 100% original art works. so these belong to private collectors from around the world. so it's a massive process to gather them and have them together and being able to present them to the public.

>> and then besides the mysteriousness behind the artist, talk about the art itself. what sets the art apart from some of the other artists that are popular now? >> it's irrer vens all over. it's got a social message, political messaging. banksy kind of makes fun of himself. so that side of not being -- not being too serious about it all is just a huge add on to what already is amazing art. >> and we have just a couple of seconds left. walk us through how long this will be here where you can get tickets and some of the specifics around how we get here. >> we're at palace of fine arts which we're super excited about. amazing amazing building. we're honored to be here. banksy exhibit.com is where you can find all the information. we open to the public today, november 22nd. and we'll be here -- we actually extending to popular demand through february 27th. so we're happy.

the south bay. we'll see those temperatures at 11:00, at 64 degrees. we'll be in the low 70s for early in the afternoon. and for parts of the south bay we have some of the warmer temperatures reaching 73 in morgan hill in east san jose. milpitas, 70 degrees. we'll see some mid-60s for danville today. hayward, 69 degrees. also 69 in redwood city while half moon bay will see temperatures reaching up to 63 and 65 in the mission district. also 65 today in sonoma. clear like and ukiah reaching 68. here's what's going on out there in the pacific right now. fairly quiet but you can see a thin, long line of clouds and then some more clouds back behind that. this is all a part of a weather system that will be coming in and not packing much in the way of moisture. so it dries up before it gets here. and we'll see more of the same as we go all throughout the week. no changes in our rain chances. and at this point you may start to think, how is our rainfall

surplus for the water year. it's still there for some spots but it's getting smaller. we've seen it shrinking jose, even though we had a the season with dry weather like this, we could go back into a deficit. and so we're looking at our temperatures this week reaching into the mid to upper 60s. overall fairly comfortable and good for your weekend travel plans as well as your holiday travel plans both going and coming from wherever you're going. mike, how does it look heading out for work this morning? >> we have a little slowing and a little backup. metering lights were turned on just at the end of the last report. your typical little backup that starts but the pattern is timing is about right and the volume much lighter as we talked about for this week. throughout this portion of the season. we have a disabled vehicle at the sausalito exit for 101. not presenting a problem but it did just get reported there. a little slowing for bay bridge. mild slowing for 37.

welcome back. it's 5:58. you're watching "today in the bay." closing arguments are set to begin in the trial of three men accused of killing ahmaud arbery. >> the defense wrapped up their case last thursday after calling just seven witnesses.

among them, the man accused of shooting arbery who was out on a jog. he testified arbery did not threaten him in any way before he pointed his shotgun. he claims he was, quote, under the impression arbery was a threat because he was defendantt testify. some city governments are coming up with new roles to tackle the effects from our climate in crisis. this month los angeles council members created a chief heat officer. yeah. so that's a new position. the new hire's job description is a plan for heat problems and develop the city's response to the threat like plans for other natural disasters, including earthquakes. florida, miami-dade county and phoenix, arizona, have recently created similar positions. >> check out this scene in southern california. money all over the freeway near

san diego. traffic came to a halt after an armored car spilled all the money. several people jumped out of their cars just to try to collect the cash. >> i pulled over to find all these $2,000 bands and all this -- all these bands and stuff. i was like, where's the money? >> where's the money? right. this morning the california highway patrol is warning people to return the money. and they are working with the fbi to identify people spotted on social media videos. two people were arrested at the scene for blocking traffic trying to scoop up all the cash. >> keeping the money doesn't pay off. 6:00 this morning, a new round of retail thefts. the latest happening overnight in the east bay. we're following those developments and looking into if this may be tied to what was an unnerving weekend for holiday shopping. >> and up in the air. the key deadline tsa workers must meet today or risk the possibility of losing their jobs. a live report on the im
