good morning. it is sunday, november 28th. 7:00 on the dot as we take a live look outside, a gorgeous view in san francisco. wow, a picture-perfect way to start the day. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist vianey arana joins us with a quick look at your micro climate forecast. and i was saying to you, if it's anything like yesterday, it'll be beautiful. and you said it might be a little better. >> yeah, considering the temperatures are going to be a little bit warmer. so if you're a fan like the mid-70s today is going to be your day. san francisco right now beautiful shot. look at this, stunning.

now, it will be a little hazy at times. moderate air quality. if you have any sort of sensitivity or allergies or anything like that, you may want to limit your outdoor activity, a little bit, but it's going to be sunny and nice. morgan hill, 43 degrees. 44 in san jose. and a quick look at the 24-hour temperature change because we do have high pressure in the area, and that's what's going to warm us up this afternoon. a full forecast in just a few minutes. i got you covered, kira? >> you definitely do, vianey, thanks. we begin with a story we brought to you as breaking news yesterday morning. the bay area law enforcement community is in mourning as we remember former police officer kevin nishita. he died protecting others. nishita was working as a security guard with a tv news crew during an attempted robbery when he was shot. before working in private security, nishita was a decorated police officer. he served at several departments

across the bay area. "today in the bay's" sergio quintana spoke to friends remembering their now fallen colleague. >> reporter: the oakland police department issued this photo of a white acura four-darsedan taken from a security camera from the scene in oakland on wednesday where kevin nishita was hit in what witnesses describe as a blaze of gun fire. he was on security detail for a kron4 news crew covering a flash mob burglary at the prime 356 clothing store. a growing reward now at $32,500 will help catch whoever killed nishita. he retired from the colma police department after being awarded the highest honor, the chiefs award. his colleagues say he was a dedicated public servant who always had a positive attitude and a lot of energy. >> he always thought he was going on an emergency call, he

was always on the go and always on the move. >> his colleagues even nicknamed him stitch after the cartoon character. >> he always did extra things, whether it was your friendship or your relationship here at work. >> he was a san jose police officer before that. >> i speak for most, if not all, retired san jose cops who knew kevin. he was just an unbelievable police officer and a great person. >> this former police chief is now the police chief in dallas, texas. he remembers nishita as a standout in the force. >> although kevin was retired, his life calling was to defend, to protect, to guard. and he died a hero. >> shortly after his death the alameda county sheriff's office paid tribute to his procession. several patrol vehicles escorted

his body with full law enforcement honors. we did reach out to his family for comment. they've asked for privacy right now, and we're honoring that request. sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> the getaway car is a white acura tl 2004 to 2008. a $32,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest. and a gofundme page was set up for kevin's family to help with medical and memorial expenses. so far it's raised more than 8,000 of its $10,000 goal. this killing is just the latest tragedy in a string of brazen crimes in oakland over the last few weeks. we spoke with city council member lauren taylor about the rise in violence. >> it's just another blow to not just our sense of security but to the efforts that we have underway in order to improve safety for oaklanders and those who visit the town.

>> again, a reward of $32,500 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in this case. we will continue to share updates on the investigation on air and on our website nbcbayarea.com. turning now to our coronavirus coverage. the omicron variant is now popping up in more countries around the world. doctors in south africa were the first to alert the world health organization on wednesday, and now over the course of a few days the variant is showing up all over europe. the confirmed cases of omicron are labeled here in red. you can see the uk, belgium, germany, italy, israel, and hong kong, as well as australia. in yellow the czech republic, austria, and the netherlands all are investigating suspected cases of the variant. the cdc has now raised its travel recommendation to the highest level for these eight african countries. they include south africa as well as botswana, zimbabwe,

malawi, and others. travelers will not be allowed to come into the u.s. u.s. citizens will be allowed in with a negative covid test. vice president kamala harris weighed in on the new variant, calling on all americans to get vaccinated to help stop the spread of covid and limit its ability to mutate. >> we're going to take every precaution. so that's why we've taken the measures we have. but, again, i can't stress enough, one, if you have not had the booster shot, get the booster shot. >> the president and vice president have been briefed on the new variant over this thanksgiving weekend. no cases of omicron have been identified in the u.s., according to the cdc. back here locally in an effort to get more people vaccinated, the santa clara county public health department is turning to young people, as it were, to convince their peers to get the shot. as "today in the bay's" marianne

favro reports, they're proutsing videos on tiktok and instagram as part of a contest. ♪♪ >> reporter: this video targets the questions about covid-19. this person created this video in an effort to get people to turn to more reliable information. >> we wanted to show that the vaccine was not in fact dangerous. >> reporter: they posted this video on instagram as part of a contest run by the santa clara county public health department. she says she and her friends are vaccinated, and she hopes her videos and others like it will convince others to get the shot, too. >> i think in the end it's each individual's choice, but i think everyone should be as informed as possible so they're able to make the choice that is truly best for themselves. >> reporter: open to 6th through 12th graders in the contest, the goal is to get young filmmakers

to harness their creativity and post their videos on instagram and tiktok to show other teens the benefit of getting a covid shot. it's an important goal as the number of children getting covid nationwide climbs. >> now 25% of covid infections in the country are in kids even though kids are about 20% of the population. so, they could spread it to other members in the family. >> reporter: the contest winner to be announced next month will receive a prize of $1,500. but for paulina, the big payoff is making a difference. >> for those who aren't vaccinated, i really hope that we can convince them. >> reporter: in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> take a look at this map that shows the percentage of bay area 5 to 11-year-olds by county who have received at least one dose of the vaccine. the state average is 14%. and you can see marin county is well above that with more than 52% in that age group having at least one shot.

here in the u.s. but there is some suspicion that it may already be here. you have dr. anthony fauci on. should we be nervous, or is it more like keep calm and get vaccinated? >> well, i would say keep calm, although it was more of a -- he said this should be a clarion call to either get your booster or get vaccinated, one or the other. he right now i think assumes the worst, meaning that this variant is coming and that it's likely going to end up spreading. but if we can buy enough time, that's why they want to shut down travel from these countries, see if it buys time to learn what, you know, how much does it evade our vaccines. and if it doesn't evade our vaccines too much and basically being fully vaccinated or fully vaccinated with your booster gives you essentially the same protections against death and hospitalization, then i think you may see this become a moment

that the white house gets a little more front and center on pushing vaccines again because after issuing the mandate, they've let the court speak and have moved on to other issues. >> it'll be interesting to see. i do want to turn now to subpoenas going out this week for some allies of former president trump in regards to the january 6th insurrection. there is also a criminal investigation into trump in new york. you have his former personal attorney michael cohen who just finished his prison sentence on monday. what is he saying? >> look, he says he believes that a lot of the trump family, not just the former president, is in line to potentially be held to criminal account over what was done at the trump organization. he stopped short of calling the trump organization basically a criminal enterprise, but he did say that there were a lot of crimes committed and that those

folks may be in line for indictments here. but i'll tell you, it is unclear of when this could happen, is it going to happen by the end of the calendar year, who else are they talking to? michael cohen says they are talking to others. he says he's been given some immunity in order to hand over. and he said he did participate in some of these things that were part of the criminal, um, issues that the trump organization's accused of here. so, we'll see what happens, but there is a ticking clock here at the end of the calendar year because the prosecutor, the chief d.a. there didn't run for re-election and his term expires then. does he issue indictments before he leaves office? >> the clock is ticking indeed. chuck todd, always appreciate your insight. thank you for that this morning. and we hope you join chuck for this morning's "meet the press." as mentioned he'll have dr. anthony fauci and exclusive interviews with mississippi

once again and put their lights up. >> we always show this shot of downtown san jose, but the tree lighting is not on. it's a little too early. so if you're awake, good morning. thanks for joining us. right now current temperatures in the low 40s. so it's a little nippy out there, aka, chilly. so 40s in san jose and really just throughout the bay area. we've been waking up to these crisp mornings, but it is a little bit warmer today because of high pressure. we're going to be seeing warmer daytime highs as well. as well as fog and visibility we're colleague throughout most handcuff the bay area, but still spotting some fog up through the north bay. if you live in novato, the santa rosa area, even areas like concord, some areas of fog. another thing you're going to notice today is going to be a little bit of hazy skies, and that's because of the air quality. let's talk about these warmer temperatures. we've got that high pressure in the area. 70s in the forecast for this afternoon. we're going to be in the upper

70s. as far as your air quality outlook, it's going to be okay. we're not really heading into the extreme or unhealthy aspect of it. but we are going to be moderate. and this could be an issue for sensitive groups, if you deal with any sort of breathing irritabilities or anything like that. here's a closer look at your numbers. we're going to be at about 89 up through the north bay. this is according to the bay area air quality management index. but for now greater tahoe, this is the shot of the day. wildfire alert cameras, what a sunrise. you can see that orange glow, just a little bit of snow left, but don't worry we've got plenty of weeks left to get more snowstorms. we're not going to get any this weekend or the start of the work week either. low 60s. a lot of sunshine through there.

things have been quiet here and we've been dry, and we are seeing plenty of activity though to the pacific northwest. they're getting the majority of this rain. this doesn't really impact us and we're going to stay dry. dry weekend into next week as well if you're wondering about our next chance of rain, well, that could be in as early as the first weekend of december. so for now the timing december 6th through the 7th could be our next chance of seeing rain in the bay area. if you didn't know, wednesday is the first day of december. i can't believe it. monday, tuesday -- well, yes, i can because this was such a weird year. tuesday, wednesday, 68 degrees in san francisco, and inland temperatures are going to remain in the 70s for the next several days. kira, i'll send it back to you. >> you and i were both talking about it. the year has flown simultaneously it has trudged by. it has been as low as molasses,

welcome back. i'm anthony flores. it has been a rough year on the farm. last weekend stanford lost. today they were trying to play spoiler against the fighting irish. the irish ranked 6th in the country and they played like it. down 24-0 in the third quarter. the cardinals defense making a play. jonathan mcgill comes up with the interception. he returns 23 yards inside the 15-yard line. two plays later, austin jones powers his way into the end zone, but it wasn't nearly enough. notre dame beat stanford 45-14.

the cardinals end their season on a seven-game losing streak. they finish the year 3-9. cal on the road to take on ucla at the rose bowl in pasadena. the bears need to win their final two games to become bowl eligible. the second quarter jace garbers scores. cal grabs a 14-10 lead. but ucla would take control of the game by rattling off 32 unanswered points. the bruins beat the bears 42-14. cal closes out its regular season next weekend against usc. big game for the 49ers tomorrow at levi stadium. the red and gold will host the minnesota vikings. both teams are 5-5. and if the season ended today, they would both be in the playoffs. now there are still seven games to go. so the winner of this one has the inside track on locking down a spot on the post-season. they haven't played each other since the niners beat the vikings in the playoffs in january of 2020.

we appreciate your beginning it with us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist vianey arana joins us with a look at the micro climate forecast. >> it's a very nice out there, very calming. i'm going to be doing plantings today, watering my plants, fertilize the whole thing because we're heading into winter. beautiful view there, we are expecting to see a warmer day today, but we're still going to be a little cold to start our morning. we're in the 40s right now in the south bay. a couple of 50s in areas along oakland. 24-hour temperature change. we do have high pressure. that's what's going to bring the hazy and moderate air quality conditions today. so keep that in mind if you're going to be out and about. sunny skies, it's going to be absolutely stunning. and also warmer than yesterday. so we're going to be in the 60s right around 12:00. but there is a possibility that we could be climbing into the upper 70s, maybe even hitting a couple of low 80s in some of the

hi there. it is 7:41. and it's such a great start to our sunday. look at how beautiful this shot

of greater tahoe is. i know this isn't here in the bay area, but it's within travel distance, and it's just a great way to really start our calm sunday hopefully for all of you. right now current temperatures a little chilly in some spots and actually the whole bay area we're in the 40s with a couple of 50s around the bay. we're going to be warming up quite nicely this afternoon thanks to some high pressure that's going to not only bump us up into the 70s but also potentially the 80s. and along with the warmer temperatures we could also see some hazy conditions. but when it comes to the fog for most of the bay area we're not seeing any issues. however, if you live in the north bay, you might see a little bit of fog up through parts of santa rosa. we had some parts of novato, looks like that's starting to clear out. and also fairfield and the concord area as well. so keep that in mind if you do run into some fog up in the nbc bay, you should know don't turn on your high beams, keep your regular headlights. talking about air quality, the reason we're going to be seeing some hazy skies is because of that far high pressure.

we are in the moderate quality. this is according to the air quality index from the air quality management district. you can see 51 to 100 is moderate. not really on the unhealthy category just yet, but if you do suffer from any sort of respiratory issues and you start to notice it's bothering you a little bit, maybe head indoors, it's going to be very sunny and nice. overall satellite radar, we aren't going to be seeing any rain locally, but we do have plenty of activity up in the pacific northwest. you can actually see it here. now this isn't going to impact us as far as rain. when is our next chance of maybe getting some more rain around here? well, dry weekend. but for now we are seeing the possibility in the long-range outlook of december possibly 6th through the 7th, maybe the 8th and the 9th. we'll know more once we get a little bit closer.

but december 6th right now looks like our best chance. the 3rd falls on wednesday. now, san francisco seven-day forecast, we're going to be the in the upper 60s. might even see a 70, especially if you live like in the center of the city. around the water you might keep in those upper 60s. right now we're going to be seeing the temperatures substantial warm especially for the interior valleys. we're going to be in the 70s today. again, some spots are going to be a little bit warmer than others heading into monday and tuesday, light breeze. so you might notice the wind start to kick up a little bit. by wednesday the beginning of december is going to start out in the 70s this year. so, we'll have a very nice week to look forward to. you can most definitely wash your car this week. i'm going to be doing that tomorrow. i told myself that. >> well, now that you've announced it you kind of have to do it because viewers are going to write to you and ask if you did it. we'll hold you to it, vianey arana, thanks.

welcome back. it's 7:47 on your sunday morning. plenty of sunshine to go around as we look from our emeryville camera towards san francisco. a little bit of haze down there. vianey arana says the forecast will be just as beautiful as yesterday with temperatures a little bit warmer than yesterday. a stowaway was found in a plane's landing gear compartment at miami international airport yesterday morning. the 26-year-old man spent the entire two and a half hour flight from guatemala in the landing gear. he was arrested by u.s. customs and border officers and taken to the hospital to be checked out. he is lucky to be alive.

the faa reports nearly 80% of people who try to stowaway on an aircraft fall to their deaths or die from hypotherma. this alarm company told officers they could see the man inside trying to break into the atm. police chased him through the nearby neighborhood and ultimately did arrest him. tesla says it wants to make it cheaper to deliver cars to customers. that's according to an internal email obtained by cnbc. tesla customers have been receiving delays in receiving their cars sometimes for months. so ceo elon musk is urging employees to look for ways to

lower the cost. there is a rush at the end of the quarter to meet those goals, but then deliveries drop off dramatically in the first few weeks of the next quarter. in the history of college football rivalry games, the big game between cal and stanford is one of the greatest you'll find anywhere in the country. it's a tradition that means a lot to many grads of both schools. but one fan has been going to the big game for 75 years. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas introduces us to her in this morning's "bay area proud." >> and then these are from the 1950s. >> reporter: when it comes to the big game, it's hard to imagine there is anyone out there with a longer history than carol leslie. >> i remember every one of these. >> reporter: she was 10 years old in 1946 when her father, a stanford grad, returned to the bay area after serving in world war ii. >> he was given some tickets to go to the stanford game. so my mom and i would go with

him. and then later, many years later, it was just dad and i. >> reporter: they went to the big game in the '50s, in the '60s and '70s. they were there when the band was on the field in '82. through it all carol says she didn't even realize she had an attendance streak going until about her 50th straight big game in the '90s. >> i wasn't really going for it. it just happened. just one year went into the next. >> reporter: well, with this year's big game, those years now add up to 75 consecutive games. each year there's a tailgate, one that now includes carol's grand children. it has become as much a family tradition as celebrating a loved one's birthday. >> and then fast forward to 2020. >> reporter: even last year with no fans allowed in the stands, carol found a way to continue her streak. >> i put my foot under to say i

had actually gone to the stadium. >> reporter: carol says she loves everything about the experience, particularly when cal, her alma mater, is doing well. but perhaps the most important part of the tradition is remembering how and with whom it started. >> absolutely. he was a great guy and we had a lot of fun. and he instilled this game in me. and i'm just so thrilled to be a part of it and have lived long enough to enjoy so many great games. >> garvin thomas, what a great story. it is 7:51. up next a quick look at the stories we're covering, including a security guard shot while protecting a tv news crew has succumbed to his injuries. how the former police officer is being remembered. and it is going to be a

welcome back. here is a quick look at the top stories we're following. the bay area community is in mourning today as we remember former police officer kevin nishita. he died protecting others. he was working wednesday as a security guard for a kron4 news crew, covering the story of an

organized burglary at the prime 356 clothing store in oakland. someone approached the crew and tried to steal their camera. nishita was shot and died yesterday morning. the oakland police department issued that photo you just saw there of what they suspect was the getaway car. it's a white four-door acura sedan taking from a security camera near the scene of the crime. investigators are hoping a photo and a growing reward now at more than $32,000 will help catch whomever killed nishita. the former police officer is being remembered as a dedicated public servant who always had a positive attitude and a lot of energy. >> for most if not all the cops that knew kevin, when i was that he was just an unbelievable police officer and a great person, and i think a lot of us are in shock. >> he was escorted after his death yesterday. the alameda county sheriff's

office paying tribute to his procession. the getaway car is a 2004 to 2008. it has a sun roof, no front license plate. that $32,500 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest. there is also a gofundme to support kevin's family and help with memorial and medical expenses. so far it's raised more than 8s had of the $10,000 goal. going to turn now and give you a live look at sfo this morning where tomorrow new travel warnings will be in place for the u.s. the white house announced new travel restrictions beginning for people traveling from eight southern african nations. this of course is in response to the new covid-19 variant omicron. the cdc raised its travel recommendation to the highest level for those countries. so that includes south africa, botswana, zimbabwe, malawi, among others. so starting tomorrow travelers

from those countries will not be allowed to come into the u.s. u.s. citizens are allowed but must provide a negative covid test. before we go, vianey arana has one last check of the micro climate forecast. >> yeah, it's going to be really nice and warmer today. look at this. temperatures in the mid- and upper 70s for the bay area because of high pressure. so if you're going to be out and about today, expect plenty of sunshine, fantastic for that. but moderate air quality. if you're going to be heading to the game today, kickoff is at 1:25 in santa clara levi stadium. 71 degrees. towards the end of the game if you're like me it is going to start dipping down into those 60s. so you still want to take some sort of light coat. >> the bay area drops so fast, it gets really cool even at levi stadium, which is always quite warm. thanks to all of you for making us a part of your morning. happy hanukkah tonight to those
