it's going to be a really nice afternoon in some spots warmer than yesterday. reaching 71 degrees in livermore and in palo alto. and 75 in morgan hill. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week and i'll let you know if there's any rain headed our way. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> 6:01. new travel restrictions today as the u.s. and other countries try to stop the spread of the omicron covid variant. later this morning, president biden will update the nation on the u.s. response. today in the bay's alice barr joins us live in washington. do we know what the president is focusing on here, alice? >> good morning, laura. we are going to hear more about these travel restrictions going out that are taking effect today. and certainly from members of the medical team, the president's medical team, they are pushing this message that you need to be vaccinated now. we need to learn a lot more about how this variant is going to interact with the vaccines,

but they do believe that you're going to get at least a degree of protection by being vaccinated. the white house in close contact with south africa getting realtime information from them and health officials say that, coupled with the new travel restrictions give a head start on the u.s. response. this morning the race to contain a concerning new covid variant sparking more travel banns. overnight japan joining israel in announcing it will bar all foreigners from entering the country. morocco halting all inbound flights. starting today the u.s. is restricting travel from south africa, where the omicron variant was first detected along with seven neighboring countries, though top health officials say the new strain may already be in the u.s. >> this is a clarion call as far as i'm concerned of saying, let's put aside all of these differences that we have and say, if you aren't vaccinated, get vaccinated. if you are fully vaccinated, get

boosted. >> having a meeting with my medical team when i get back to the white house. i'll have more to say. >> reporter: president biden preparing to address the nation today. the white house in close communication with south african health officials who are urging calm. >> there's no reason for panicking as we don't see severely ill patients. >> reporter: what is concerning experts say the omicron variant shows signs of mutating easily which could nak more transmissible and potentially able to evade immunity, even from vaccines. top u.s. health officials believe existing vaccines will still add a degree of protection against severe cases, predicting we'll know more in about two weeks. moderna and pfizer say they're already working on potentially reformulating their vaccines to adapt to the omicron variant. if that becomes necessary, there could be new vaccines ready by early next year. but despite that, health

keep doing this? >> yeah. i just think -- i told my husband, it's so dangerous. >> she's holding a going out of business sale hoping to recoup some of the money lost. some chinatown leaders fear more small business owners are going to pack up and close because police are focusing on protecting the big retailers. they are pushing for greater police presence. a live look at the federal courthouse in san jose with testimony resuming in just a matter of hours for the theranos founder elizabeth holmes. the line of questioning should get tougher this week. in her criminal fraud trial. holmes' defense has been questioning her ever since she took the stand. soon prosecutors will begin their pros-examination. reports of a court filing by the defense late last week suggest where holmes' attorneys plan to suggest guilt. they asked to use statements made by holmes' former lover. the partner expected to stand trial for the same charges next year. her attorneys hinted at the strategy during opening statements back in september.

he never testified in the holmes trial threatening to take the fifth if called. follow the reporting of the are the -- theranos trial online. click on the elizabeth holmes trial coverage. if you decided to stay home on black friday you were not alone. disappointing retail numbers across the country. bob redell joins us from pleasanton. a drop in online sales as well. >> good morning, scott. yes, this is the first time that online sales on a black friday have dipped compared to the year before. you can see the numbers, according to adobe analytics that firm found that shoppers spent $8.9 billion online this past friday. that's $100 million less than what they spent last year. adobe suggested this dip in spending may have been caused by an uptick in early spending as some stores started their sales and promotions as early as october. global supply chain issues could

have been another contributor. adobe analytics is predicting that today is on cyber monday shoppers will spend $10.2 billion and $11.3 billion which would be more or less than the $10.8 billion spent last year, last cyber monday. when it comes to foot traffic, brick and mortar retailers saw an increase of almost 48% this past friday compared to last year. that's according to sensormatic. compared to prepandemic in 2019, food traffic still down 28%. an analyst believes shoppers are spreading out their purchases for two reasons. one, they can't find what they're looking for because of supply chain issues and, two, they don't want to go inside a crowded store because of ongoing concerns about covid. reporting live in pleasanton, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. 6:07. let's take a peek outside on this monday morning. always a beautiful shot this morning. the golden gate bridge.

san mateo bridge, crowded a little more. things slowing here. 92 at 35. san mateo hills, reading about an incident. chp reports someone may have lost their -- it may impact your trip to or from the coast. a busy weekend of thanksgiving travel, things should be a little calmer there today. >> a record number of americans hit the roads, rails and skies. as tom costello explains, there were fewer bumps in the road than expected. >> good morning to you. we really have had the airlines under the gun and in the spotlight for the last few months following the high-profile meltdowns involving spirit, southwest and american airlines. and mass cancellations from the summerall the way through october. but really this thanksgiving stretch going very, very well for the airlines. we saw 2 million people plus nearly every single day. yesterday, sunday, we think about 2.4 million people

traveled. and the airlines really had minimal cancellations and minimal delays. the weather really was a very advantageous factor. blue skies. going forward into the christmas holidays, a lot of concern about the omicron variant, this new covid variant. might that slow passenger volume? we saw that over the summer with the delta variant slowing passenger levels or depressing passenger levels. the concern is that could happen again. at the moment, there isn't enough information about this yet and so the airlines are watching very closely what happens overseas to see if this affects passenger volumes going into the christmas holidays. but if you are traveling over christmas, the advice is book now if you haven't already and book pad time. get to the airport early. make sure you don't have too tight of a connection, if you will, because that is going to be a very difficult situation if you have a lot of people flying

all at the same time and not a lot of extra room to get from one plane to another at the connecting airport. scott and laura, back to you. some restaurants are now taking delivery and to-go orders off the menu as they struggle with labor shortages and the return of dine-in customers. that's because it's commonly less profitable than dine-in business. olive garden, cheesecake factory and applebees among those cutting down on to-go orders when locations are struggle with staffing. food delivery boomed over the fast years but restaurants are dealing with reopened dining rooms and hiring issues and people finally returning back to the restaurants, you want to make sure they at least get somewhat decent service. n. the restaurant itself that makes sense. it's tough when you are sitting there because they're filling all these others. trending this morning, movie goers rushing to snag seats for one of the most anticipated films, "spider-man no way home."

jared leto deserves an academy award. >> that's a variety. >> i stayed at home. let's get started this morning as you are waking up and coming off of maybe a long weekend. heading back to work as we're waking up. and we're seeing a clear sky ov right now. if you want to head out go hiking, enjoy the beautiful weather that we've had recently. it continues today. we're starting out in the south bay with upper 40s. we can see into this afternoon, we'll reach into the upper 60s. eventually reaching about 73 degrees in san jose. 71 will be the high in livermore and in palo alto. santa rosa reaching 70 and san francisco reaching 66 degrees. the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. if you're going out in san francisco tonight, to enjoy the second lighting of the menorah. it's going to be in the low 60s

at 4:00 and be the we'll see those temperatures dropping off quickly heading into late evening. here's what's going on. so we've seen very dry weather here recently. all of the rain has been really hammering the pacific northwest and it continues today. and we still have this large area of high pressure blocking any chance of rain head our way. all of those storm systems are going missing the bay area. so once again we're stuck in this weather pattern. usually we're entering into some of our wettest months of the year but recently we haven't seen a lot going on. and it's all because of that high pressure that will keep us from any chances of rain in the near term. hopefully as we go through the month of december, we'll see that pattern changing, but right now it's all sunshine in the seven-day forecast. our temperatures have been slightly warmer compared to what we normally see for late november, early december, and we'll see those temperatures in the upper 60s into the weekend.

and more of the same in san francisco. also very nice and comfortable for the middle of the day. mike, you've been watching a couple of issues for the commute. how is it looking? >> this just came in. sounds dramatic. it's a wrong way driver on highway 92. in light of the video we showed you from over the weekend at the bay bridge. but this is 92 at 35. a park and ride lot omeone got d around and then corrected themselves after someone passed by. but the note right now, chp watching right around here. 92 at 35. so do be careful. watch for activity there. so far that's not cutting off half moon bay from 280 but traffic map did put that in there as a note. we'll watch that as well. other side of the bay north 880 still at hegenberger. lights bunching up. by the time you get to the coliseum and north of there, everything is clear and fine. traffic just punching up approaching the coliseum. slowing for highway 4.

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is here with what we know so far. >> there are no known cases of the omicron variant in the bay area or in the u.s. for that matter but many countries are instituting travel banns to try to contain the spread. the u.s. is restricting travel

for non-u.s. citizens from south africa and seven other countries. overnight japan joined israel and morocco in banning foreigners from entering their countries as well. the world health organization is calling omicron a very high risk because it could be more transmissible. the w.h.o. is calling on nations to start monitoring for that variant in order to better understand it. but here's what we know so far. early data in those first cases shows that it is spreading faster than other variants. however, the symptoms seem to be extremely mild according to one of the first doctors to identify it. some symptoms are similar to the alpha and the delta variant like fatigue and those body aches and headaches. but this mutation seems to make people's throats feel more scratchy than sore and are no reports of cough or loss of smell. so for now medical experts say keep doing whatever you were doing to avoid infection from other covid variants. >> the regular person today, you

should be doing all the same things you did yesterday for delta. get vaccinated. get your booster. vigilance as transmission is increasing in your communities. get tested if you are traveling. get tested if you're sick. don't go to gatherings. and that's how we can reduce the transmission of this virus. >> medical experts say that it takes about two weeks to understand how the variants react. things like transmission and severity and whether omicron is infecting people with some level of immunity either because they already had covid or got their vaccine. something to remember. if you are on the fence about vaccination. omicron is one variant and the vaccine has been proven effective against all of the other variants so far. >> pfizer and moderna's chief medical officers say if a new vaccine is needed, the company can have it ready by early next year. dr. paul burton calls omicron a dangerous looking variant but he's optimistic they can fight

workers. there he goes back toward the toll plaza going the wrong way. he goes the wrong way down the approach to the bridge. the chp says the truck crashed into an suv but nobody was hurt. one chp officer did suffer minor injuries. the truck driver was caught. they took him into custody. >> developing in oakland, police searching for a car burglar who shot and killed a man. it started after 3:30 yesterday afternoon on grand avenue close to lake merritt mean was trying to stop a car burglary when the suspect ran him and shot away. it follows new action by oakland police which yesterday said it will enlist additional officers to address the increase in violent crime. this includes new tactical teams which are highly skilled in de-escalating dangerous conditions. law enforcement escorted the body of kevin nishita to the coroner's office. the security guard and former police officer died protecting a

tv news crew last week in oakland. this is video taken by his former colleagues after his death on saturday. officers followed his body to the alameda county coroner's office. dozens more officers waiting to give his flag-draped coffin a final salute. he was shot last wednesday. he had been working as a private security guard since retiring in 2018. he had also served as a police officer in san jose. the reward leading to information for his arrest now $32,000. take a look at this. this is what police believe is the getaway car. white model year 2004 to 2008 acura tl and no front license plate. that reward in this case more than $32,000. we'll continue to share updates on the investigation on air and at nbcbayarea.com. >> our condolences to that family. switching gears now.

throughout the week coming up. >> yeah, hazy but not foggy. good enough to see the traffic flow smoothly but slower than we might like heading across the bay bridge. that's westbound. the backup is at the toll plaza. planes are flow now. traffic recovering through oakland. we'll check on that and the issue on the peninsula coming up. it is 6:46. if you decided to avoid the crowded stores of black friday, trns out you're not alone. retail numbers disappointed analysts across the country. bob redell live in pleasanton this morning. online sales, did you take a look at those? how are they doing? >> they are down for the first time. good morning, laura. yes, black friday online sales dipped for the first time compared to the year prior. according to adobe analytics this past friday, shoppers spent $8.9 billion online. that's a lot of money. but it is $100 million less than

what they spent the year before last year in 2020. adobe suggests that this dip in online spending might have been caused by an uptick in early spending. you consider the fact some stores started their sales and promotions in early october. or early as october. global supply chain issues could have been another contributor. adobe analytics is predicting today on cyber monday shoppers will spend between $10.2 billion and $11.3 billion. which could be more or less than the 10.8 spent last year. when it comes to foot traffic, brick and mortar saw an increase of 48% this past friday compared to last year. that's according to sensormatic. compared to prepandemic in 2019, still down around 28%. an analyst believes shoppers are spreading out their purchases because they can't find what they are looking for due to supply chain issues and they don't want to go into a crowded store because of ongoing

yesterday. i'm done. let's get a look at our live view in walnut creek as you head out. it's been so hazy out there. if you are sensitive to all that particulate matter and some of the unhealthy air quality, you might want to limit your time out there. we'll see the hazy and moderate air quality conditions continue today. as far as fog, wow, down to zero right now inspect novato. be careful driving around the north bay. it's also looking hazy right now in palo alto with our temperature at 43. we will see sunshine through the day, whatever we're seeing right now, the fog and the patchy dense fog in parts of the north bay clears out quickly. we're headed for low 70s in san rafael. 72 in santa rosa and reaching 68 in antioch today. san jose reaching 73 degrees. also really nice weather in the castro tonight for the tree lighting ceremony going on. that starts at 6:00. it will be about 58 degrees and all clear as we go into the evening. it's going to be very chilly out

there. but we've had dry weather continuing and all the rain headed toward the pacific northwest you can see that's going on right now. what's happening is high pressure is blocking that. it's created some really warm and windy weather for southern california, for us. it's just been really sunny and hazy and we're seeing all of the rain riding up and over the bay area hitting the pacific northwest. and normally for this time of year we're heading into some of our wettest times of the year. our wettest months. but we're still seeing dry weather going into at least the next week. after that nice start to the water year. unfortunately we're seeing our surplus of rainfall continue to dwindle. and we're going to see that continue as we go through the week as our temperatures only reach into the low 70s. or will reach above normal for the next few days. while san francisco continues to see highs in the mid to upper 60s with sunshine. mike, you're still tracking a problem for highway 92. >> still no word on traffic
