to affordable internet in the last 10 years. and this is emmanuel, a future recording artist, and one of the millions of students we're connecting throughout the next 10. through projectup, comcast is committing $1 billion so millions more students, past... and present, can continue to get the tools they need to build a future of unlimited possibilities. it's a special day around here kathie lee gifford back in our studio for the first time in two years. >> i can't believe it. >> she's celebrating the release of her brand new book. it's out today and it's going to
8:37 am
be a best seller because that's what kathie lee does it's called "the jesus i know, honest conversations and diverse opinions about who he is." kath, you walked in the door and it feels like you never left >> it really did. >> how does it feel for you coming back in the studio? >> kind of surreal i wish i could see everybody everybody is still masked up and stuff and i'm going, laura, is that you gerard >> you knew when everybody came and hugged you the cry and everyone >> i'm so glad we can hug up again. we're not meant to be masked up and alone. that's not the way god intended. >> right. >> it isn't. >> i mean, you left here a couple years ago how many years ago >> three years april 7th but who is counting? >> in those three years, you have led an extraordinary life for people who don't know, you moved to nashville and started all over and i don't think i've seen you this happy i can't remember >> i haven't been this happy don't make me cry, hoda, in a

lot of years people don't know that frank had been sick for quite a few years. it's been six years since he passed, too. so i knew when i was in that empty, beautiful home with my children in california and frank with jesus and my mom and dad, also, i just -- i couldn't even toast the -- we all did sunset alert every night, the kids with their tippee cups and frank and i with our tippee cups and i couldn't do it and the puppies, they would look at me and i would look at them and it's a line from the movie, then came you, i've got to make new memories or the old ones are going to kill me and i'm not ready to die. >> starting over, was that scary, hard? >> it was necessary. i was dieing of loneliness, just dieing even with my faith, that propels me and sustains me, you need people and i won't -- i will not beak into that song nobody should sing it but barbra streisand. >> but it's so interesting
8:39 am
because you said you were lonely but then you did something that takes so much courage which is to go to a whole new place and make a whole new community of friends. >> right and i did it because i was spending so much time in nashville cowriting all the music for the movie with brett james. and every time i would get on the plane, i was happy to come home to be with my friend and do our show, i would think, why a i so joyful here there's a culture of kindness there. there's a culture of creativity and a culture of faith and i needed all three i did. i was starving in my spirit for it >> which brings us to this book, kath you've written so many books, but this one you said it came out of you >> because all i did was talk to people who i love and admire you're in the book, hoda, i spoke with you i spoke with people who do not look like me, do not believe necessarily like i believe, do not worship like i believe but i've always felt like our common ground is sacred ground
8:40 am
with the world being as polarized as it is now, it's interesting, i share my faith if somebody wants me to i share it with atheists and agnostics and wannabe and confused baptists, there are a few of you, and broken-hearted catholics, people are hurting and needier than ever. i think the pandemic heightened that people have always -- no one has ever said don't talk to me about jesus. and i've wanted to know what they think of him. this book is conversations a lot of them with people that i've taken to the holy land with me and watched that place change them chemically, really in a transformational kind of way, but it's also people you wouldn't think wouldn't have a faith. people know kris jenner, she shares her story, kristen chenoweth, china phillips
8:41 am
baldwin does her, jimmy allen, i met here on the set. >> love jimi. >> here's the thing i love about it, they're all so different, and yet the common thread is that every single one of them feels like the life that jesus led, even if you don't believe that he is the son of god, even craig ferguson has agreed with me 100% that if we would just live the way he lived, if we would just love the way he loved, we would be living in a very, very different world today. and i want this book to be for people who just don't know yet that god loves them. they feel -- they feel invisible. they don't believe that anyone loved them or they feel like they've done so much so badly in life that how could god ever love me? so it's just a message of hope and i want to, you know, thank everybody. i think there's 25 different conversations with people that i wanted to surprise people because god always shows up, but he also shows off when he gets
8:42 am
there. >> i love that. >> and i think this will bless people that's the whole purpose for it. >> it's going to be a blessing, kath by the way, we have to say congrats to cody and cas two married babies >> i think it's paid off we had to get married twice. cody and erica walking up our driveway that's me and kristen chenoweth. we got married people don't realize it. always did love that kristen chenoweth. >> we love you everyone is going to pick it up. the book called "the jesus i know". >> some things never change. >> christian is in the book. >> today.com/shop. kathie is going to stick around in the fourth hour >> oh, do i have to? >> you have to please all right. coming up next, jenna will be here to share one california's school district to keeping kids fed and learn about the importance of healthy eating this is "today" on nbc. the last day of vacation is still vacation.

8:48 am
her student and the whole community, handing out groceries before thanksgiving to make up gaps in meals and she says any bit of help goes a long way for these families >> we can meal prep and have a full two weeks' worth of meals sometimes, even longer it saves us over $150, these drive through pickups are life savers >> there is a level of uncertainty and this is a level of certainty i know at this day at this time i can guarantee that i'm going be able to bring some food into the household, some additional treats and things of that nature >> as the pandemic becomes more manageable, she says her work is not done she hopes to expand this pantry so her community can have access to healthy food on a regular basis. >> it it takes a village, really to feed a child. it takes every single one of us. we all have a part to play >> you guys, great news.
