this morning, as the new omicron variant spreads around the world, the cdc is now strengthening its recommendation that all adults, not only can, but should get covid booster shots as president biden calls for calm and wider vaccinations. >> this variant is a cause for concern, not a cause for panic. >> reporter: overnight, a source familiar with the process told nbc news that pfizer now intends to apply for the first emergency use authorization of covid boosters for teenagers, specifically 16 and 17-year-olds. that application is expected this week, but there is no timeline for when the fda could act. still, the omicron variant bringing new concern for those even younger. in south africa, where the strain was first identified, experts have seen an increase in hospitalizations among very young children. the country's communeble disease institute revealing kids under 2 make up the highest percentage of covid patients at the epicenter of the outbreak. in the u.s., experts say vaccines for everyone who can

get them are the best way to stop the spread. 74% of americans age 5 and older have now received at least one covid shot, and more than 196 million people are fully vaccinated. 40 million boosted. the president also says he's not considering any widespread lockdowns. >> if people are vaccinated and wear their mask, there's no need for lockdowns. >> reporter: meanwhile, all three vaccine makers in the u.s. are testing their shots to see if they work as well against this new variant. >> it's highly likely that there would be loss of vaccine efficacy and effectiveness, that whether we will have to tweak the current vaccines, we don't know. we have to wait a couple of weeks until we get the key data. >> reporter: also breaking overnight preliminary tests show the covid antibody drug cocktail made by regeneron loses effectiveness against the new variant. the latest sign that at least some of these therapies may need to be tweaked. >> gabe gutierrez for us, thank

her breasts. >> ann thompson, thank you. the much-anticipated trial of ghislaine maxwell. a full day of testimony beginning this morning after the prosecution and defense delivered opening statements. nbc's stephanie gosk at the courthouse once again. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. the prosecution says ghislaine maxwell lured young girls with money and gifts and subjected them to sexual abuse. her defense argues she was the one manipulated by jeffrey epstein and is now the scapegoat for epstein's crimes. on day one of the maxwell trial a tale of two ghislaines. the attorney calling the 59-year-old a predator who was setting up young girls for financier jeffrey epstein. the defendant was trafficking kids for sex. that is what this trial is all about. maxwell, daughter of a media

mogul and epstein's girlfriend faces six criminal counts focused on 1994 and 2004 when federal prosecutors say she helped recruit girl to the have sex with epstein and participated in the abuse herself. the prosecution detailed the experiences of one of those girls who was just 14 when she allegedly met maxwell at a summer camp. prosecutors say her abuse went on for years when the girl was 15 and 16. they had a playbook. first they had access to young girls and then they gained their trust. the defense arguing maxwell is being blamed for crimes allegedly committed by epstein who took his own life in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. the defense called maxwell a convenient stand-in, arguing the four alleged victims at the center of the case will come in here and they will point their finger at ghislaine maxwell. there is nobody else to point their finger at. they say maxwell was in charge of managing epstein's properties and was just one of many who

8:13 today's consumer it is travel tuesday. when you can find deals on getaways, but yet again, there is new uncertainty surrounding the industry, including concerns over this new covid variant. so we've called in the expert. nbc investigative consumer correspondent vicky nguyen is joining us happy travel tuesday >> happy travel day. >> didn't even know it existed people might want to book travel because there's good deals today. that's travel tuesday. what do you need to consider >> before you book, demand is building and it's back that means you want to be ready and prepared but there are some things you might want to watch out for. don't expect the cancelation and flexible refund policies of the last year and a half are still in place you want to read the fine print. you're going to be out there with a lot of people a survey found 40% of us are saving up for a trip next year so a lot of folks are getting out there. >> the things to keep in mind, we're going to read the fine print. what if you want to make - if you're worried about the covid variant, do you need make adjustments to their travel plans?

>> omicron, delta, they're not going to be the last mutants of covid we see unfortunately. when you are booking been be aware of bundling. the other thing, everyone is telling us get vaccinated. we know that reduces your risk of illness and if you get a breakthrough the severity will be shorter and length of time you're out. >> a lot of countries are requiring it >> if you have your eye on an international trip you want to get vaccinated to frieely move about the country. >> it's my turn. people want deals, it is travel tuesday. where can you find the best one? >> start with a focus list where do you want go search on the internet look at booking.com, kayak.com, expedia, that will give you an idea of comparing prices, what deals are out there so when you see a deal you will see if it matches up and makes sense. also go directly to the airlines and hotels and see if they will match the prices from the third-party websites

because you said you were lonely but then you did something that takes so much courage which is to go to a whole new place and make a whole new community of friends. >> right and i did it because i was spending so much time in nashville cowriting all the music for the movie with brett james. and every time i would get on the plane, i was happy to come home to be with my friend and do our show, i would think, why a i so joyful here there's a culture of kindness there. there's a culture of creativity and a culture of faith and i needed all three i did. i was starving in my spirit for it >> which brings us to this book, kath you've written so many books, but this one you said it came out of you >> because all i did was talk to people who i love and admire you're in the book, hoda, i spoke with you i spoke with people who do not look like me, do not believe necessarily like i believe, do not worship like i believe but i've always felt like our common ground is sacred ground
