your first weekend of december with us. i am kira klapper, our meteorologist vianey arana joins us with our forecast. >> it's sort of cool and comfortable to start a live look. we are going to be seeing some area of fog but current temperatures as you head out the door, low upper 40s. by this afternoon though we are going to see temperatures start to climb remaining in those 60s. the story is those king tides, there is a coastal flood advisory remaining in effect. i want to guide you through this. for the weekend we'll talk about the king tides and it's going to be nice and sunny, next week we are talking about spotty chance of rain in the forecast. i will talk about the timeline coming up. >> hopeful. sounds good.

the omicron variant is spreading across the bay area. five people in alameda county tested positive for the variant, among a group of 12 people all went to a wedding wisconsin last week and one of them returned to international travel, the health department said they had mild symptoms. omicron is in nine states. the first case was in the u.s. here in san francisco on wednesday. health leaders say as a result more people are getting vaccinated, the cdc reports more than 2 million shots went into arms on thursday alone, that's the largest single day total since may. half of those shots were boosters. in south africa where the omicron hit children under five.

now to a covid crisis in the north bay, parents let their children go to school despite one of them testing positive for the coronavirus. the actions of one family causing 75 children in the elementary school to be placed in a modified quarantine. sergio quintana reports. >> reporter: an outbreak in school what school officials had to managed over days all because the parents of two students decided not to follow instructions from marin county's health officials. >> we are trying to wonder why this happened. >> reporter: this has never happened before. the parents of two students got notice one of them had covid-19, they were told to quarantine

both kids but they sent them to school. the parents did not tell school officials one of them was covid positive. on november 18th, public health officials called the school. >> what did you guys do to figure out we got an issue here. >> the first thing we did was to check attendance. >> reporter: three positive cases transmitted and five others were due to exposure outside school. elementary kids only been eligible for shots recently so none were vaccinated. the family of 75 students had to go through modified quarantine. >> they had to alter travel plans, this was a major inconvenience and alter their thanksgiving. >> this is very serious. this is a situation where we know that for some our students

and staff with underlying health conditions that actually getting covid could be a matter of life and death. >> reporter: the superintendent says they have taken action against the parents of the elementary students but did not say what kind of action. the county department of public health could also pursue the case through violating a public health order which is a misdemeanor. nbc bay area news, sergio quitana. >> if you are searching for to get a vaccine and booster shot, we can help, with our website. parents of ethan crumbly have been taken into custody. their son is accused of killing four students earlier this week.

the parents are facing involuntary man slaughter charges in connection with the shooting rampage. they were scheduled to be arraigned yesterday but did not show up. police tracked them down after they abandoned their car. it's presumed they are headed to canada. back here going to the smash and grab robberies happening across the bay area, one east bay community is taking things into their own hand. tom jensen reports from walnut creek where more officers are now patrolling the streets. >> reporter: the sheriff department made the announcement of the new patrol today, as soon as we arrived in downtown walnut creek, we saw patrol here assisting with walnut creek police. the promise assistance from the contra costa is in response to a growing number of organize retail thefts like this one at broadway plaza nearly two weeks ago. >> we are concerned because this is something that we don't see

in walnut creek. it's pretty crazy, it's hard to believe it's happening here in walnut creek. >> reporter: on a regular date night in walnut creek with their baby despite the disturbing trend and relieved to see local officers and deputies working together to keep them safe. >> we are staying on the corner, there is definitely more police presence than we are used to. >> it's a welcome site. i appreciate it. makes everybody feel safer. >> reporter: exactly when the mayor law enforcement leaders were hoping for. a feeling of calm for the holiday season downtown. the sheriff department says the high profile patrols will be there through the holidays. >> we want to ensure that people when they come to walnut creek and shopping they are feeling safe. we have our police department that's out there. we have additional assistant. >> reporter: it's up to police to arrest and send these people

behind these organized crime sprees to prison for a long time. >> we all need to get together and put this behind us. nbc bay area news, tom jensen. we have a follow up of a family owned business smash and grab that happens on thursday, eastridge mall. robberies made up with $70,000 worth of jewelry. the owner hads mall for 20 years and never had anything like this happened before m. turning now to family grieving their father, kevin nishita, he was shot and killed last week working and protecting a news reporter. what we must do now while covering stories across the bay

area. nishita family is sharing their sorrow. >> reporter: the family is still mourning their loss but through their tears, the wife and son and daughter spoke publicly about their loss to talk about the one they love but also help finding those who did the shooting. >> anybody who was in the area at the time and if they have any video they can turn into the oakland police department. >> reporter: virginia was stunned by the shooting but not surprised kevin himself in jeopardy for the sake of others. >> that was his personality to and brave one that just wanted the protect people. so not just his family but others as well. >> there is street lights, we can see our way to the car, he would have a flashlight out and

everything, it was a little too intense. okay, we can see where we are going. he would always lead us out making sure everyone is buckled up. >> reporter: still there is lingering bitterness and longing. >> he didn't deserve this. he's retired and looking to stay busy. just wish he can come home. >> we are seeking to find a reasoning behind all of this so we can have some closure and understand why it happened. >> reporter: the family says it's still working on memorial services, there are a lot of details to work out because so many others also want to say good-bye. in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. happening today more help is on the way for afghan refugees who come to the bay area, hayward city leaders and community members are setting u refugees as they resettle here

highs because it's going to be absolutely beautiful today, despite the fog and the combination of sun and clouds, we'll see temperatures in the upper 50s, low 60s for the south bay san jose, 60 and 61 degrees entering some of the interior valleys. danville, 62. we'll be in the 50s around the bay. 61 degrees in concord around the peninsula, san mateo at 55. brentwood city, 59 degrees. overall in the city is going to be cool, upper 50s, you are definitely going to want a jacket into the afternoon especially into the later portion of tonight. it's going to feel a little chilly, santa rosa at 61 degrees. now here is the big story for the weekend, it's going to be the king tides, there is a coastal flood advisories, this is going to be in effect until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. where? the north bay interior, the highest tides are expected to be

highlighted areas and through the opening areas as well you can see here on the map. the highest tides are expected to be mid to late morning and coastal trails and also the roads around the coastline could see some localized floodings. if you are wondering what are king tides, let's talk about this. the sun is at its closest point to earth and the moon is at its closest point to earth. that creates the proximity of the sun and the moon. it causes water to pulling closer in land which creates the king tides. aside from the king tides, we'll see comfortable temperatures, in the 60s and upper 50s for the south bay. 60 degrees for san jose, take a look at the east bay, 61 in concord. livermore at 61. hayward at 60 degrees. san mateo at 55. winds not really a factor for today, it's going to stay pretty

calm there. 57 degrees for the mission area and low 60s up to the north bay. santa rosa, 61. what's going on with our extended outlook? we'll remain dry for today and tomorrow. if you look at satellite radar, you can see activities off in the pacific. looking ahead, once we see those high pressure start to back off. we do have a chance to see some shower activities on monday. that's a start of the workweek could bring a chance of rain into the bay area. our best chance of seeing sierra snow is going to come in the play on thursday and into friday, december 9th, we'll expect to see another round of possibly more rain in the bay area. localized flooding remains in effect. tag me and i want to see photographers out there getting great footage.
