good morning. it is sunday, december 5th, 7:00 on the dot as we take a live look outside in downtown san josé. cloudy skies, similar to what we saw yesterday. it's the perfect time now to check in with meteorologist, vianey arana, so see what sunday holds for us on this last day of hanukkah as well. >> it will be a cool start. you can see the clouds and fog out there, but it's a nice and crisp morning. it feels like december. here's a look again at the san josé camera. i want to zoom out so you can see the fog. we are seeing limited visibility

in a number of spots including san francisco, santa rosa, down to quarter mile visibility, and down to six miles in san josé, four miles near the hayward area. please keep a safe distance, and let's talk about what to expect. here's a look at what i will be discussing in my full forecast. the king tides are still here, and the coastal flood advisory is still in effect, and we will talk about a bigger coat may be needed at the end of the week. >> it will really feel like december. thank you. a popular san francisco restaurant is getting bad reviews online after staff refused to serve three uniformed police officers. >> hilda and jesse is a brand-new brunch spot and opened

recently, and their reviews have one star. on saturday night, people gathered for a private event there. the restaurants's co-owners declined an interview, and they gave a statement. we respect the san francisco police department and are grateful for what they do. their decision to ask the officers to leave comes with the rising crime. >> if i am in a restaurant and a police officer comes in wearing their uniform and everything, that's totally fine. >> i am at a place where i can ask for help and it happened, so i never felt that way but for other people, they might. >> we learned the restaurant

owners met with officers this morning to discuss what happened. this statement was issued, three foot beat officers looking to eat where they patrol are treated without any tact or class by this establishment. fortunately there are plenty of restaurants that don't discriminate and will welcome officers working to keep all san franciscans safe. >> there was a tweet saying the san francisco police department stands with safety with respect, even when it means respecting wishes that our officers and i find discouraging and personally disappointing. i believe the vast majority of san franciscans welcome their police officers who deserve to know they are pressure 800 for the difficult job we ask them to do in our neighborhoods to keep our neighborhoods and businesses safe. turning to the plea for a help from the family of an uber

driver shot and killed in san francisco. it happened near on the on-ramp in the outer mission near cesar chavez. his wife said a man approached the car and demanded the man's wallet before shooting and killing him. uber says the man was not working for uber at the time. he believes a young wife with three children. >> translator: he was a man that was about caring for his family. >> he was only 31 years old. the family moved to sacramento from afghanistan just two years ago. turning to the ongoing coronavirus virus, the omicron variant now in 16 states.

it possibly could be more transmissible but less harmful than other variants. the latest u.s. case was reported yesterday in wisconsin. the case was detected in milwaukee county. health leaders said a person that recently travelled from south africa tested positive. this person was fully vaccinated with a booster dose and mild symptoms. that's the same county where five people from alameda county travelled for a wedding and were infected with omicron. we are told this new case is not related to that wedding, and so far in all the cases everybody is said to have been vaccinated and have mild symptoms. if you are still searching for a vaccine or booster appointment, we can help. chris chmura put together an entire how-to video, and you can watch it on nbcbayarea.com and on our nbc bay area app. a north bay high school student arrested after police

found a handgun inside his backpack. it happened on friday in santa rosa. school staff and officers removed the student from class and when searching his backpack officers found his gun. the student did not most likely intend to use the gun or threaten anybody is what they determined. the teen is now booked in jail. today in the bay's tom jensen reports, the hopeful connect warm line will take calls from around the region starting tomorrow and hopes to fill what organizers say is a gap in services. >> as many of us navigate another holiday season in the time of covid. many directed towards asian and

african-american people. >> they have issues with reaching out for support, especially professional support. >> a professional therapists based in san josé and one of the organizers of the hopeful connect, a call-in line where anybody can get help for free after-hours when it's often most difficult to get a real person on the phone at night. >> people of color, we identify with the vulnerable population and we may end up feeling marginalized and may need access but do not know who to reach out to. >> it specifically feels with hate crimes and other issues they may encounter, and they will listen and get them to needed resources. there could be hundreds or thousands in the bay area that have not reached out to anybody after experiencing hate and racism. this gives them an outlet when many traditional help lines are

not staffed. >> the team is lending his technical skills to get the line up and running and will work with online callers as a coach, and it's not for many emergencies. it starts on monday night and operates every day from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., and is open to anybody in the bay area. callers can use 408-782-4736 and may remain anonymous. now to a live look in san josé where city leaders are hoping a new hash tag will encourage people to shop local for their holiday shopping. the mayor kicked off the shopping campaign to encourage people to stop in at family-owned businesses and

restaurants as they go shopping this season. a lot of mom and pop stores were forced to shutdown during the pandemic and part of the problem, online giants, like amazon. the mayor is hoping to build pride through the #sendsamshopping. >> we will get to pick the different ones out of the hat and send me off shopping to our favorite stores. >> the campaign kicked off at tropicana in east san josé. a long-time east bay politician will be remembered this week in a commemorations. she will be honored in the celebration of life ceremony on wednesday. she died last month when she was hit by a car in alameda while walking her dog. the event takes place at oakland's museum of california.

welcome back. it's time for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." later in the newscast we will talk about the future of roe v. wade in the mississippi challenge. you have exclusive interviews with senators from both sides of that fight. what are they saying at this point? >> well, look, you have senator klobuchar, one of the questions i put to her is from her perspective, there's two bad

potential outcomes coming, and is one better than the other meaning would you rather have the mississippi law upheld or overturned? because it's political and you could argue the more galvanizing moment, and if you are concerned about figuring out how to get some additional protections for women here, maybe the overturn is the way to galvanize the political argument. she is not convinced they will uphold row, and that's that. senator braun believes this is reason it's so duh divisive. it's a theory, and it's not one i concur with. i think this is likely to make

it more divisive, and likely to make state legislature races and governor races pivot more so than a year ago. >> yeah, it would be a state by state case. i want to ask you about the omicron variant, and you speak with the director of the national institutes of health. what is the headline about what he is saying about our now second pandemic holiday season? >> so what he said is you have to pay attention where you are going and who you will be with and all that, and he's not saying don't travel, but be aware, and know the communities you are going to and wear a mask in certain situations and he also was not ready to sound the -- not ready to say positive or negative yet on what we could expect from omicron.

delta is still bad enough for us right now, but for instance maybe the news that omicron will be more transparent but less, but what he still believes is everybody needs to get vaccinated if you have not and if you have not been boosted, get boosted. in that sense, a boosted vaccinated person will have a lot of protection from omicron. >> yeah, less mild symptoms is what we are hearing. we hope you watch chuck todd's "meet the press" and the senators and the interview with the director of the national institutes of health, francis collins. now to cnn's primetime host, chris cuomo, if you have not

heard he has been terminated by cnn. cuomo was suspended from the network after more details emerged about how he helped his brother, former new york governor, andrew cuomo amid sexual harassment. he spoke out saying, quote, this is not how i wanted my time at cnn end, but i already told you how and why i helped my brother. now to a story you will only see on nbc bay area. our investigative unit has obtained more information on the mother that was throwing alcohol-fueled parties for minors including her son.

the first complaint came from a parent in december of 2020 according to internal e-mails. that parent claimed her daughter overdosed on edibles and the interim principal promised to follow-up and inform police. more e-mails were sent to the school over the next coming months. >> schools are really fighting a battle on two fronts right now. there are a lot of parents that want schools to back out of parental responsibilities, and the same parents turn around and say to the school, why aren't you dealing with this? >> o'connor is facing charges including child endangerment and sexual battery. she has yet to enter a plea in

court and has not responded to our attempts to reach her. you can watch the full investigative report right now on nbcbayarea.com. just click on investigations. we're going to turn now to the fact that we are just two days away from the 80th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor. we were able to speaking to a veteran on his way to hawaii to a parade. he was just 17 years old and halfway through boot camp in san diego when the attack happened. the next day the u.s. navy put him on a train to san francisco and then on a boat to pearl harbor. he tells us he is excited and proud to be part of the ceremony on a battleship on tuesday. >> how do you feel that you are going to pearl harbor again? >> oh, it tickled me pink. couldn't wait. >> the world war ii vet was born and raised in san josé, and now

at 97 years old he says he walks two miles five days a week. wow. now to cutting down a tree just to throw it a month later, it's a puzzling tradition to some monterey county entrepreneurs, so in 2009 they started a company where people can rent christmas trees. they will deliver them right to the door. the prices depend on the size of the tree. after ten years, the tree gets too big to rent out and when that happens they get planted in the forest and their rental days are over. i like that idea. let's check in with vianey arana for our microclimate forecast on this sunday. >> yeah, that's a good idea. i like that. they go back into the earth. i love it. let's talk about the fog here. if you are driving in it, you probably don't love it. dublin, you cannot see the roads or nothing, but i promise this

is a live camera and it's not broken and the visibility is just broken in this area. look at livermore. santa rosa, it's quarter of a mile. we will continue to see the fog at least through the first half of our morning. current temperatures as you head out the door in the 40s and 50s. today we will see hazy skies, and temperatures a few degrees warmer as winds kick up. san josé, 65 degrees. hayward, 63. san francisco, 62 degrees. up through santa rosa as well. as far as your air quality, it's a little hazy. we will stay within the moderate category, and the king tides are still prominent and there's the flood advisory that will stay in effect until 3:00. the highest tide will be around

11:16 in san francisco. if you are going to be heading there, just keep safe. satellite radar right now, this tells the story of what is to come. let's get right to it. we have had a ridge of high pressure and blocking any chance of rain and that will move to the southwest. we have a system incoming that will bring us a chance of seeing shower activity and winds heading into monday and tuesday. you can see that there. that's our first chance of rain. as we head in towards thursday, we get another storm system. this one is a colder one that will bring us a better chance of seeing rain thursday into friday, and also sierra snow. as far as rainfall totals right now, it's not going to be a huge downpour in the initial system, and then higher totals for the north bay. take a look at the outlook for the polar air outlook. what is this? it's cold air expected to sweep in thursday into friday.

anywhere across the bay area because we have had so much clouds and fog over the last 24 hours. i am kira klapper. meteorologist, vianey arana, joins us with a quick check of your microclimate forecast on the second to last day of hanukkah. i misspoke earlier. >> it's going to be foggy to start but a little sunshine for the afternoon. i have been even joying the cooler days in the bay area. i really have. san josé seeing the fog, and that's a live look downtown. look at the limited visibility in santa rosa, down to quarter of a mile. down to six miles in the san josé area. once we see the fog, it will make its exit temperature in the 40s and 50s. take a look at some of the headlines i will be discussing coming up in my full forecast in a few minutes. king tides still in effect this weekend, and then a chance of showers and cold changes ahead

for the bay area. >> thank you so much. a new san francisco restaurant is facing backlash after refusing to serve three uniformed san francisco police officers. now explaining why. >> hilda and jesse is a brant new spot in san francisco's north beach neighborhood. they opened to customers november 1st. if you check out their yelp reviews, most recent reviews only have one star because they would not serve officers. they prepared a statement reading in part, this restaurant is a safe space and the presence of the officers weapons in the restaurant made us feel uncomfortable we welcome them into the restaurant when they are off duty, out of uniform and without their weapons. their decision to ask the officers to leave comes as the

disappointing. he went on to say i believe the vast majority of san franciscans welcome their police officers who deserve to know they are appreciated for the difficult job they ask them to do in their uniforms to keep our neighborhoods and businesses safe. turning now to our ongoing coronavirus coverage and another sign this pandemic is far from over. nbc news reports the u.s. has officially hit 49 million cases of covid-19. that increase comes just ten days after the country reached 48 million cases. to date more than 790,000 deaths have been reported. the new omicron variant being reported in 16 states. a new study by researchers from cambridge university shows the variant may have picked up material from a virus that causes the common cold that makes omicron variant more

transmissible but more mild conditions. five county from here in the bay area, alameda county, travelled for a wedding and were infected with omicron. this case is not related to that wedding. so far in all those cases everybody was vaccinated and said to have mild symptoms. tomorrow a new rule will be in place for international travelers coming to the u.s. and it's all because of the omicron variant, adding new complications to an already-busy holiday season as many people get ready to see their loved ones. nbc's anne thompson, has the story.

>> news on the omicron variant attempting to upset many long-awaited holiday plans. >> i'm nervous. >> others confident vaccines, masking and social distancing will keep them safe. >> we cannot live in fear and we have to do what we have to do. >> some of that is changing. starting december 6th, all international travelers coming to the u.s. including american citizens will have to show a negative covid test taken within 24 hours of departure. the mask requirements that has sparked outrageous and dangerous behavior by a few is now extended to march 18th on all public flights and public transportation. fines will double for those that refuse to comply. there's nothing off the table.

>> we do have some strong protections in place already. >> united airlines ceo expect some financial turbulence from omicron, but nothing like the delta variant. >> the bookings will be lower than others, and i think it's three steps forward and one step backwards. >> health experts say the best protection for travelers is to get vaccinated. if celebrating with family and friends, keep gathering small. hosts guests outdoors if possible, and remember to wash your hands regularly. if you are reconsidering your plans, travel experts say call before canceling. >> if you decide that you are uncomfortable traveling, call the airlines and see what they will do for you. sometimes they will give you at least the value of a flight in a voucher you can use on a future

good morning. it's 7:42. we are waking up to dense fog yet again. look at the live look in san francisco. at least its back there somewhere. the camera is not broken, it's just so dense you can't see behind it. along with the dublin camera, you can see the highway and how dense the fog is and also down through san josé. if you will drive early this morning, please keep in mind visibility is limited right now. up through santa rosa, the north bay down to quarter of a mile. down through the interior valleys, livermore about three fourths and san josé down to six miles when it comes to visibility. it's also chilly this morning. 51 in san francisco. now, let's talk about the king

tides. this has been the story this weekend and the flood advisory does remain in place for the highlighted areas here. ocean beach in san francisco, highest tied of seven feet around 11:16. in through richmond, the tide at 11:38. satellite radar paints a picture of what is to come, so let's get right to it. you can see it in the pacific. right now we have the high pressure -- excuse me, but out -- there we go. you can see it looking ahead, the high pressure heads to the southwest. not going to be a complete washout, but just enough to give us shower activity monday evening as well could see showers. thursday and friday we have a colder storm system. this one has the potential to bring us snow in our forecast, and also colder air to the bay area. i want to talk about that.

first, let's talk about some of the rain totals we are expecting out of the initial storm system a couple 0.01 of an inch. the polar air outlook, all the way through wednesday and thursday. cold air changes ahead. you can see it sweeping in and it could bring us snow activity to some of our local mountain tops. excuse me. san francisco, the 7-day forecast, we do have a breezy wind as well expected to pick up on monday. heading into tuesday and wednesday, we get high pressure that dominates in the forecast yet again, and then on thursday and friday, we have rain at times. that's when the colder system is expected to move in. take a look at the temperature drop. we go from upper 60s this weekend down to low 60s and essentially only topping out at 58 degrees, and getting colder by friday and saturday with the overnight lows dipping down into the cold 30s, which means frosty

back here to the u.s. and a live look at the white house this morning where president biden will hold a video call with russian president, vladimir putin, on tuesday. white house officials say on the call the leaders will discuss a range of topics like the u.s./russia relationship, cyber and regional issues. biden also plans to emphasize the concerns with russian military activities on the border with ukraine and reaffirm that support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of ukraine. and then hearing the most significant abortion rights since roe v. wade, and it's leadership from the state of mississippi versus the state's final standing abortion clinic. the state wants to ban abortion after 15 weeks. nbc bay area analyst, gary --

larry gerston. what makes this so important for the country? >> good morning. there are three important factors. first, impact. one out of every four women under the age of 45 will have an abortion, and that's a large number of women directly impacted by the decision. and the second is public opinion. the survey suggests there's strong majority vote when it comes to roe v. wade. a more recent survey shows a 2 to 1 majority for roe v. wade, so that's important. finally, the third thing we want to think about is science versus religion. the science says at 23 weeks, that's when a fetus leaving the womb can survive as a baby.

religion says and those who are favoring it this way, is life begins at consepltion. it's hard to find middle ground between those two values. >> so nearly 50 years after what so many justices agreed on, roe v. wade as settled law, why this issue now? >> why now? yeah, why now? 48 years later. why now? well, there has been a seismic shift in the composition of the supreme court, and every one of the three justices nominated by

trump, every one of them in their judicial lives have spoken against row verses wade, and they have a hard time finding a constitutional guarantee, unlike the court with row versus wade. so 50 years later, they say we don't see the federal government has a responsibility or a right to privacy that others may see and because of that we need to leave the states on how to manage this issue. >> if, you know, if a majority overturns roe v. wade, which does seem to be the hint with the conservative justices, if they are in favor of the new mississippi standard, what would the key takeaways be for the rest of the state? >> well, what happens here, if the court decides, you know, we don't see the federal guarantee, we then leave it to the states and state by state they will

decide at what point if any a woman should be given the right to choose. look, the mississippi state's case says 15 weeks. 26 states right now are primed with potential laws along those lines. ten states have pending legislation saying conception begins at birth, and that means those that want to get an abortion have to find it somewhere else and that could cause great difficulty, and in those states it's easy, more people coming, perhaps, like california, which is one of the easiest states for a woman with a right to choose. and some states are blocked in altogether. we can't say this enough, and that's the impact of presidential elections. presidential elections have consequences in all kinds of
