it's just really challenging, so much so that i don't know if we will be able to do it. >> right now at 4:30, new travel restrictions as the variant continues to spread. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking when this fog could clear out and when the next chance of rain is coming up in our forecast. this is "today in the bay."
4:31 am
good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i am kris sanchez. laura garcia has the day off. >> i am marcus washington. let's get this monday started. i will have a look at the commute coming up in a bit but first let's look at the forecast. both of you are talking about the same thing, the fog. >> yeah, there's fog in a lot of spots across the bay area. it's hard to see getting to work and not just because you are sleeping. we are looking live at dublin as dense fog is in that area, and you will be in and out of the fog as livermore visibility down to less than a mile. we will see some clearing this afternoon, but you will notice temperatures will be cooler. keep the jacket close by. we are reaching up to 60 degrees in some of the warmest spots inland. >> kari, it's tough to look around oakland because the light
4:32 am
is bouncing off the fog and low clouds. 880, traffic is light and there's a report of a roadside fire, and we will track that. this is the reason you don't use high beams in fog because it bounces off the fog, and as we get through the area there's a little slowing as you past the scene that is just starting to clear up. more importantly, look at the dense fog, highway 4 being impacted, highway 37 and over towards san rafael, that will be a tougher drive there. south of the san mateo bridge, things are clearer but low clouds make things look a little eerie. back to you. >> thanks, mike. beginning today tighter testing kicks in for international travelers entering into the united states. >> this is to try and slow and
4:33 am
detect the spread of the omicron variant. >> at the international terminal, passengers will be subject to the new tighter testing window when they return. >> i think it could be challenging, but we will make it work. >> all international travelers including u.s. citizens will have to show a negative covid test within 24 hours, and for people with holiday plans abroad the new rules are another challenge. >> it will be a problem for some people, and i don't know if that will be everywhere for all the flyers. >> i think it's necessary but it's made travel so complicated. >> and passengers also need to research what other countries
4:34 am
are requiring. in france, they require a test within two days of departure, and israel is asking people to quarantine for three days. >> i do think we have an investment in making sure people are not bringing new cases, especially when we have things like the omicron to worry about. >> we have you covered on the latest updates for the omicron variant, and just go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the top of the trending bar, you will find what you need. self defense and awareness events are popping up across the bay area. a special class was held with kids in mind. the anti-bullying workshop was held for children from 7 to 12 years old, and this is to learn
4:35 am
to prevent confrontation. >> we teach the kids how to find their voice and pay attention to their situational awareness, and we teach them how to defend against a punch, choke and wrist grab. >> students learned how many everyday objects could be weapons of defense. the retired police officer turned security guard, his services are set for thursday. the decorated officer served in san josé over the course of his career. public services are set for noon on thursday at the civic center, and masks are required indoors. this is a live look at the
4:36 am
golden gate bridge and it's foggy there. we're used to that, but it's foggy everywhere else, too, and that's really the story. >> yeah, we are starting out with fog in san josé, and in some other areas not used to seeing fog. we are looking live at christmas in the park in downtown san josé. our temperatures are not too chilly now but we may cool off a few degrees before sunrise. that fog will be very slow to clear. later on tonight we are getting ready for rain, and scattered showers start to move in late this afternoon into parts of the north bay, but then the rest of the bay area seeing good coverage of light showers tonight and we will see that continue into early tomorrow morning, but then clearing out for tomorrow afternoon. it's nice to see some rain in the forecast and there's more down the line. we will talk more about that in a few minutes. kari, we are starting over
4:37 am
here in mountain view, 287, and everything is clearing from the clover leaf. very light traffic throughout the south bay now but we are seeing patches of fog and that would mess around, because folks are not used to seeing fog in this area and that could mess around with your context, so drive slow. highway 84 was closed all weekend, but they should be clearing for 680 and the mission boulevard alternate as your work around. that should be right on schedule from what we hear. that fog, really dense fog in patches in concord and walnut creek. a big push for coal.
4:38 am
futures are a bit mixed. we have more on the opening outlook ahead in our cnbc morning business report. >> a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. not that foggy out there this morning. i thought it would be more foggy, but there you go. around the bay area, fog is certainly an issue. stick around and find out how your morning commute will be. we'll be right back.

4:48 am
five inches for parts of the north bay, and then could be as high as seven inches of rain in ukiah. this is not this week but next week, there could be a big dumping of snow in the sierra, which is great. there could be as much as three feet of snow. that's next week. we will see off and on showers for today, and then another chance on thursday. we're clear up until late sunday, but notice how chilly those temperatures will be all throughout the week. we're looking at 287, there's a quick break and that ramp should be reopened any second. no major injuries and not a major impact. you should be fine even if you are in mountain view and sunnyvale getting over to that point. even though traffic is
