we want to get things started with a look at the commute, and mike has a look at that but first we have to get to the forecast. kari hall is tracking that. >> not bad this morning. we are seeing all clear conditions right now and we don't have the wet roads we had yesterday morning starting out, and we are getting ready for more showers set to move in, and we are getting very active weather moving in over the next few days. the evening commute could be soggy for spots in the north bay. another round of light rain coming in and moving into the south bay after about 10:00 to 11:00, and we will see it quickly moving out and only bringing 0.1 of an inch of rain for most. we do have a bigger storm on the way and we'll talk about that in a minute. yeah, heading up on east bay

880, flares neatly lined up and they were removed in the last 15 minutes, so no problems going away from the bay bridge. i think this is clear after a quick traffic break. westbound, that's clear. there's fog in the north bay, so keep that in mind. back over to you. >> thank you so much, mike. 15 years ago, scott peterson was sentenced for the death of his wife and unborn son. only three reporters have been selected to be in the courtroom, and today in the bay's marianne favro is one of them. >> the sentencing hearing should last about two hours and we are expecting to hear from peterson himself. the judge allocated 16 seats

inside the courtroom for lacey and her family, and 16 seats for peterson's family. that was this, and this is now. scott peterson is scheduled to be sentenced again. the 49-year-old will return to court in redwood city to formerly hear his new sentence, but it's no mystery what the judge will say. >> the only thing the judge can do is impose life without parole. >> why is peterson's death sentence being thrown out? >> scott peterson is being resentenced because the california supreme court struck down the death penalty, and the way the jury was selected violated the state constitution, and that made the death penalty verdict rendered by the jury

illegal. >> friends and family of lacey are expected to give impact statements at the hearing, and peterson's attorney continue to fight to have his conviction overturned based on claims that juror number 7 in the original trial, also known as strawberry shortcake, lied to get on the jury, depriving peterson of a fair trial. >> i think there's a very real possibility that the judge is going to order that scott peterson get a new trial due to the extent of the juror misconduct in the original trial. >> that hearing is set for february. marianne favro, "today in the bay." breaking right now, pfizer just out with new data on the effectiveness of its covid

vaccine against the omicron variant. the company says a booster shot may be the key. pfizer's study shows effectiveness with just the original two-shot combination is lower with the numbers similar to those found in a small study in south africa. but a third dose, that booster, brought the protection levels up to the vaccine. this comes as the cdc is urging everybody to take an at-home covid test before attending holiday parties. where do you get those tests and how much are they? today in the bay's ian cull has that data for you. >> it's making headlines around the world. a 40-fold decrease in antibodies

could neutralized the new variant. but a peer result said that those that got covid before and then a booster shot faired much better. >> what that doesn't tell us is the two arms of the immune system that are still at work for us, and what they are called is you develop with vaccines t-cells. >> the real world results have been encouraging. >> the cdc just put out a report today, anybody that is vaccinated, either mild symptoms or no symptoms at all and that's pointing towards the clinical data. >> omicron infections have been identified in 20 states, and the delta variant is driving 99% of the infections in the u.s.,

good wednesday morning, as you are heading out the door, fog is up a little higher and we see that on this camera as we take a look outside in san francisco. we do have low clouds and maybe even a little mist to start out the morning. we are getting ready for rain that will arrive later this afternoon and into the evening. we can see the clouds start to reach in and some of the moisture diving south from the pacific north west. the 7-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen as we talk about the rain headed our way. what we see this evening into early tomorrow will be very light. we are gearing up for a bigger storm system that will come in on sunday and continue into monday and linger into tuesday maybe as well. this is what we know about the system so far.

between sunday afternoon and monday we are looking at an atmospheric river and that will enhance the rainfall. the models are showing quarter of an inch of rain to three inches of rain and gusts of wind from 20 to 40 miles per hour. some of the valleys will be rain shadowed, meaning they will get less rainfall like santa clara valley, but flooding small street drains will be possible. for the sierra we are looking at several feet of snow. let's take a look at some of the computer models that show our rain outlook and what some of the numbers may look like for early next week, anywhere from three to possibly four inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains will be a pretty big amount. but for the sierra for the next system we are getting tonight, two to six inches of snow. check out next week. the possibility of getting over 70 inches of snow in kirkwood,

and that's just two weeks before christmas, so that's perfect if we do see this panning out. let's take a look at our forecast. it's going to be chilly the next few days. we could have frosty conditions as we go into the weekend for the start of the morning, only reaching into the mid-50s with sunshine. we will be talking about this atmospheric river coming in on sunday afternoon into early next week. mike, you had lots of light? >> yeah, kari, yesterday you saw a traffic break as well -- maybe it was the day before. but about this time they send a slow-moving caravan of vehicles clearing this area, and this is palo alto, and we just missed the parade of lights and it's traveling up here past marsh and up to 3rd where the crews should clear in the next half hour. there was a disabled vehicle towards the dumbarton bridge,

and the san mateo bridge. we are tracking those crashes. over here, highway 84 like over the weekend we had the full closure. this morning we just have 680 and your mission as an alternate. back to you. >> thanks, mike. now to a story you will only see here on nbc bay area. a good samaritan tried to help during this tense situation, and ultimately he ended up in the hospital with a knife wound. now his neighbors are speaking up about what they say is fueling the crime south of market. today in the bay's, jean elle, has the interview. >> when he started to kick the door in i called 911. >> from his hospital bed, he tells us about the moments of being slashed in the harm on howard street.

him and his neighbors say they started to follow the man after they kicked the door more than once and they wanted to point him out to the police, and the owner of tony bologna says the situation quickly escalated. >> he wanted to chase me and mark got next to me, and when he went to chase both of us and he pulled the knife out. >> he pulled out a 6-inch switchblade and started swinging it at everybody. >> venders on the block said they have had enough. >> theft, vandalism and violence are part of daily life. they blame drug use and drug sales outside the shelters and hotels. >> stealing and wheeling and dealing and selling, and it's a mess. >> it's a haven for drug activity.

>> sacket is recovering from surgery on his arm tonight. he was at his office this morning to meet with an artist -- >> i believe san francisco is turn into a third-world country and we need to do something to curb the crime. coming up next on "today in the bay," the concerns being raised about the lack of students getting their covid shots. and the new action plan san francisco leaders are taking to stop the crime. and then 13 people recovering from a crash near the mexico border. that truck was being chased by border patrol agents. one of the passengers were taken away from the scene in a helicopter. the rest were taken to an area hospital, and boarder patrol is investigating this case. we will have more for you right after the break.

san francisco leaders are fighting back to stop the recent crime wave happening across the city and are getting help from the sheriff's department. yesterday the sheriff and police of chief outlined the program, and if approved by supervisors they would allow off duty officers to work in the city. this is part of a plan to make places like union square safer. the police and sheriff said the plan will help them meet demand with more security without affecting current staffing levels. and then children could be forced back into online learning
