hall, tracking when the latest system is planning to hit. this is "today in the bay." of course we broadcast to your television, but we also stream live on nbcbayarea.com. check it out. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. let's get your hour start with traffic and weather. we will get a look at some snow? i know there will be snow in the sierra. is that coming anytime soon -- i was trying to think if it's a rain or snow, a lot of stuff going on out there. >> it's cold out there. >> yeah, we are starting out with cold temperatures this morning and this is our live view in san josé. in some spots we have frosty conditions and then we will see sunshine today. for the weekend we will be preparing for the storm set to move in early on sunday. yes, we will have heavy rain and snow in the forecast for early next week. let me show you what you will feel as you are stepping out the door on friday morning.

we are right now only in the mid-30s in dublin. 36 in morgan hill. it's 38 in san josé. our temperatures will dip a few more degrees before sunrise. we could see freezing temperatures in some spots. this is that atmospheric river that we will be talking about the next few days. we will keep you covered on every platform as well as on social media. keep an eye on the timing as well as intensity and how much rain and snow we will see across the bay area. i will have more on that coming up in the last few minutes. vianey, you might want to check the tire pressure. it's cold and that sometimes may delay your commute. >> absolutely. when i turned on my car this morning, my tear pressure light was on. i will have to check that out and make sure i am being safe and my tires are good to go. there was an area that popped up

not eligible for booster shots, but experts say they will have strong protection from two doses, because generally their immune response is stronger than adults. >> we are hearing so much on up and down numbers wise, so give us an idea of with those numbers stand and compare it, if you can, to earlier in the pandemic? >> right. it's good to put this into context. if you look at the most sobering statistic we have, the death count. earlier on cdc the reported 1,800 covid deaths in one single day, and that's lower than the peak when the vaccines were widely available. in january we were recording more than 3,400 deaths in a single day, and in january, we were down to 111 deaths per day, so that gives you context of

where we are right now head into the winter, and the cdc reminding folks, if you are unvaccinated, you are 11 times more likely to die from covid. >> when you put it like that, that's scary. alice barr from washington, thank you. san rafael schools are opening up centers that will help students deal with isolation and stress of the pandemic. they will be located at tara linda and san rafael high and davidson middle school. they will be able to get counseling, help with support groups and crisis intervention. if you are headed for a concert indoors, every one over the age of three must show proof of vaccination or a negative covid test within 72 hours of the event. those new rules in place last night, at the the sap center and

chase center and shark tank. new state rules cover indoor events with more than 1,000 people, and fans at last night's game seem to favor that change. >> it's a bit surprising, but if a ten-minute test will give us piece of mind, we are happy to comply with that. >> i have done it before, and normally it hurts but it didn't hurt as much. >> the sharks set up free rapid testing for guests. this is near one of the sap centers' entrances. it's open two hours before the puck drops. a san francisco man that dedicated his life to preventing street violence was shot three times. it happened on broadway during a night out november 21st. hamilton said he just bought a pizza and shared it with

strangers and was walking to his car when he heard gunshots. he managed to run inside a club to receive help. now he wonders if it was a case of mistaken identity. >> i would have tried my best to utilize the skill sets i have in violence intervention prevention, mediation and de-escalation. i didn't even get the opportunity to even do any of that stuff. >> he's hoping witnesses come forward and help police make an arrest before the shooter targets somebody else. 5:08 right now. happening today, san francisco students plan to walk out of class because of the way they say officials handle reports of sexual assault. >> yeah, they are wanting a change in how they respond to that complaints of sexual

assault. you might recall hundreds of students walked out last month because they say they don't believe the district is doing good enough job of holding perpetrators accountable. we spoke with one student that said the administration swept her complaint under the rug, and -- >> i removed myself, and then he will move himself to be right near me. i am, like, can we not do that? i thought we made it clear we would have our boundaries set, but, no. it's me, taking myself out of that class that is what makes me feel comfortable, and i have to -- can you? >> yeah, she just has to -- sorry, yeah, we just saw him in the hall. >> yeah, he just walked by.

so that literally shows you there's nothing being done. >> wow. >> we asked specifically about those allegations, but they responded with the overall policy. this is a diagram of how they handle sexual assault allegations. so yesterday the superintendent also shared a letter with families reading in part, we want to reiterate each and every student's concern is taken seriously, and sexual harassment has no place in our schools. we are taking the steps to make sure we educate, address and prevent any incidents of sexual harassment that occur in our schools. and there is a link to report. i will put the letters up on my

happy friday. the time is 5:15. as you are stepping out the door in the east bay, you want to make sure you have a heavier court. temperatures at 50 degrees, and dipping a couple more degrees before sunrise and then dipping as we see a lot of sunshine. we are getting ready for rain by the end of the weekend.

we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. usually the metering lights come on at 5:20, but we may get lucky on this friday commute. more details coming up. apple customers have sued because of the watches. the complaint covers all but the most current apple watch. apple has not responded to the lawsuit so far, but apple has in the past offered free replacements for watches whose battery's swell. this is very important data. as you know, it has been discouraging data, lately. economists fear we may see the worst inflation numbers in years. the oil and gas prices have been

falling. we sometimes get a little quiet when gas prices go up, and they are down 16% from the october highs. that is a lot. the white house knows the inflation is the political challenge for president biden, and the republicans know that, and many americans are demanding washington do something. the thing is doing something about inflation, and we may need to do something about inflation, it's going to hurt. the fed at some point will with draw its support for a lot of the economy, and that could mean people will lose jobs, and it will adjust interest rates and that will indirectly affect your mortgage. 15 and 20% interest rates was not unheard of in the '70s and

'80s. also want to point out, apparently at one point you were allowed to smoke a cigar while you answered questions in the senate -- >> yeah, the first news room i worked in, the walls were yellow because so many people smoked. >> yeah, smoking and drink in the news room back in the day. >> yeah, no more. a new housing project for the downtown west expansion. "mercury news" says it would be near the diridon station transit

>> yeah, keep that over there. the weather, we like to say keep it over there, and the rain says, no, no, i'm coming your way, kari. >> and we need it. i don't know if we need this much and all at once, but this is how we get half of our yearly rainfall and that's with that atmospheric river. we will see that coming in by the end of the weekend. cold, frosty in some spots, and, yes, this weekend we will talk all about the incoming atmospheric river. we will have storm ranger powered up for the weekend and you can have the same views we get here in our weather office if you have the nbc bay area app, and it gives you alerts as that rain approaches your location. we are still dry but we can see a long line of clouds and moisture that is going to be coming in. that's basically what an atmospheric river is. it's a long narrow band of very high amounts of moisture that

brings in about half of the yearly rainfall. then we take a look at our temperatures for today. it's cool. we are starting out in the 30s and only reaching into the 50s. that polar air poured down across the region, and that will be more coming with the atmospheric river ahead. that's why we are saying this may taper off next week with snow across the bay area peaks. the timing for the rain, it starts to move in on sunday morning and continues monday morning into tuesday. there's more rain behind that for wednesday and thursday, so it's going to be a pretty soggy week. we are looking at rainfall totals anywhere from three quarters of an inch in san josé, and four inches or more with gusting temperatures and it could cause street flooding with all of the heavy rain. nine inches of rain across the santa cruz mountains, and three to five inches of rain for the north bay. for the sierra, i can't even

imagine seeing 99 inches of snowfall in kingville over the course of a week, and even lake tahoe could get 72 inches of snow. that's pretty amazing. we will see if that all pans out. once again, this weekend, while it's still dry, make sure you are preparing for that and it will be windy. it's cold. i have my boots on and i will bring out my rain boots. it's busy. we are starting to notice an increase. it's 5:22. this is typical, right around this time. at least we are not seeing any major crashes. we have a little slowing along 280, and i will have another look at that coming up in a bit. coming up next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds."

river coming in. a slow rise in temperatures as we're only headed for the 50s this afternoon. 56 degrees in san josé and in concord. san rafael reaching 54 degrees. as we go through the forecast, cold air with us for the weekend as the polar air continues to pour down. we could see snow on the bay area peaks next week. more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. here's a look at storm ranger, and be sure and follow kari on facebook twitter and instagram as she tracks the weather for us, and download the nbc bay area app. it's free.

hospitalizations are starting to rise again. >> bob redell is live. break it down for us. what does that increase look like? >> coronavirus cases in the bay area are up 37% the past week, and hospitalizations up 9% since thanksgiving. this is from an analysis done by the "san francisco chronicle." this is a reminder to get vaccinated. if you are vaccinated, get boosted. the cdc said 16 and 17-year-olds can get boosted and santa clara county said to the teens, come on in and you can get those shots right away, and if other counties have not, they should be issuing a notice to 16 and 17-year-olds. this is a reminder to wear masks when you are indoors and avoid

large crowds. the delta variant is still the dominant strain, not the highly contagious omicron variant, which we have heard so much about. back east the surge is so severe, new york has canceled elective surgeries. scripps health, which are hospitals in the san diego area, say the mandates are well meaning but misguided. they not only delay proceedings and hurt care, but it doesn't do much to help hospitals treat covid patients. >> let us manage this. just closing down a clinic

investigators say they got a dna hit from a sample submitted last year. it belongs to a 51-year-old danny hamilton who has been in prison for sexual assault in southern california. the family calls this news good news. >> it's a joyful roller coaster. this guy is a monster, and he needs to be held accountable. >> the louis family said they plan to see this case through the trial. a plane forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger assaulted a flight attendant and a air marshall. police say the passenger was taken into custody by the air marshall. no word on any charges for the passenger. the faa is investigating. a live look this morning at

the toll plaza at the richmond san rafael bridge. the dream of one day extending the pipeline over the bridge to boost water supplies may be closer to reality. the utility has agreed to sell billions of gallons of water in the event marin's water supplies get too low. the water would move through the east bay waterways. the cost of the pipeline could cost. what is that on the side of the road? >> snow. >> yes, it's piling up near truckee, and a lot more fresh powder could be on the way with the nice, big, juicy system on its way to the bay area. we will get rain but they will get a lot of snow up there, which they need.

>> absolutely. we have been waiting on this for so long, since october. if you will be going to that tahoe area within the next few days, today and tomorrow are clear. you shouldn't have any problems getting there. the snow we just got has been cleared from the roadways. then on sunday we will start to see rain coming down and it will transition into snow heading into the late evening sunday hours as cold air starts to move in. going into monday, tuesday and wednesday, it will just be snowing. it could be very heavy at times, around south lake tahoe we are looking at two to five feet, and there could be seven to eight feet in those areas in the higher elevations. if you don't want to risk it and stay home, let's look at walnut creek. later this evening they will have their grand opening for walnut creek on ice. it will be a cool afternoon and chilly this evening, dropping

down into the mid and upper 40s for tonight. stay bundled up for that. for christmas in the park this evening, we will head to 48 degrees at 7:00 and then continuing to dip. the later in the evening, the colder it will be. you can go and see santa and get presents, we will see the temperatures throughout the day reaching into the mid-50s and sunshine. stinson beach will stay in the mid-50s. that's when we will see the storm system coming in on monday. probably saturday will be the best day to be along the coast. we will talk more about the atmospheric river coming and how much more rain we will see. that's coming up in a few minutes. the commute is dry this morning, so you don't have to worry about that. this is going to be the weekend

he's lying state at the u.s. capitol right now. funeral services will take place for him later this morning at the national cathedral. president biden is scheduled to speak, and then senator dole will be flown back home. we will have a special report just before 8:00 a.m., whb the funeral services get under way. meanwhile, business at the capitol continues. >> scott mcgrew, america is going to pay its bill? >> it should not be news. the full faith and credit of the united states means something, but for a while there it looked like we wouldn't. a group of republicans led by mitch mcconnell joined democrats in the senate to pass a bill that would allow the country to raise its debt ceiling, pay the money it already owed. the treasury warned congress the u.s. would run out of money next

week if action was not taken that the raising the debt ceiling is something that happens fairly often and usually it's not political, and that's because paying bills for things you already bought is not optional, when the other option is default. you could choose whether or not to swim if you fall out of a boat, but the other option is, yeah. and mitch mcconnell and the republicans are getting grief. they did not vote to raise the debt ceiling, but they voted for a law that would allow democrats to raise the debt ceiling. we are negotiating with the russians trying to head off an invasion. today we will see the second day of the democracy summit as more than 100 democratic nations

gather to protect democracy from authoritarian forces, conspiracy theories and false claims. the attorney general in new york said donald trump will have to answer questions under oath about he and his company and how they valued buildings. a federal appeals court rejected trump's argument that what he said and did on january 6 was subject to executive privilege. the select committee says it will postpone a deposition from trump adviser, jason miller, after miller started to cooperate with the bipartisan investigation. he was scheduled to be deposed

today. we will talk more about inflation as laura mentioned. that's on social media. you will find me on twitter @scottmcgrew. developing this morning, two men now accused of starting the caldor fire outside of lake tahoe is expected to be arraigned later today. authorities this week arrested a father and son and charged them with reckless arson. so far authorities are not elaborating on why they are the fire suspects, and their attorney said they had nothing to do with the fire other than call 911 to report the flames. california water agencies ended up falling short. the state could have selected nearly $1 billion in funding for

delinquent bills. we're talking about $300 million. that money will cover as much as 90% of the debt accumulated by more than half a million struggling californians over about 15 months of the pandemic, but less than half of the state's water agencies applied for their share. thousands of customers outside the bay area still face shutoffs due to money owed. returning this morning, new year's right around the corner and you know what that means, new year's resolutions. >> a new survey says you likely kept what you hoped to do. 71% stuck to their resolutions this year, and that's significantly higher than 58% who followed through in 2020. the survey shows top resolutions this year are to save money, pay down debt and spend less for almost half of the millennials

and gen zers the option for us is rain, rain, and rain. but we need the rain, kari. >> sure do. >> yes, we do. we have been talking about how much more rain we need to really try and put a dent in the drought, and it's coming. we are getting ready for the storm system to come in. starting on sunday early in the morning, and then continuing into early next week rbs as we start out, as you are heading out on this friday, it's clear but it is cold. that's what you will feel, temperatures in the upper 30s to start, and then going into today, we are only reaching in the mid-50s this afternoon, and then we will see the temperatures diving right back down, cooling down quickly, and we will be in the upper 30s once again with some spots near freezing, especially as you take a look like san martin.

once all of that continues into the weekend with the cold air, then we get ready for this atmospheric river. we will track this storm on every newscast, on every platform, and make sure you have the nbc bay area app so you can get alerts as rain approaches your location. we will see the rain in the north bay as early as saturday evening, but most of us by sunday morning. it continues into the day on monday as well as tuesday. then we have more rain behind that in the forecast on wednesday. so before this you want to make sure you are spending time cleaning up the leaves and the storm drains, and make sure the outdoor furniture is prepared for winds at 34 miles per hour, and we could see rain totals at four plus inches in some spots, and there will be snow possible on some of our bay area peaks. once again that street flooding could be possible due to the storm drains being clogged.

look at the rainfall totals this computer model is putting down. possibly nine inches of rain for the santa cruz mountains with most of us getting three to five inches of rain. for the sierra, it's hard to imagine we could see as much as 99 inches of snow in king dale, and south lakefront getting 72 inches of snow, and twin bridges, 90 inches of snow. we have been asking for it and could get it all at once with this big storm headed our way. vianey, what are you seeing for the morning commute? >> things have been pretty quiet, but i will step out because i have one small issue in fremont if you are traveling along north bay 880 before thornton avenue. there's a crash that you can see there that is causing a little bit of delays, because of the activity going on at the

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." law enforcement officers joined friends and loved ones to pay their final respect to kevin nishita. a procession of law enforcement agencies made their way to the san josé civic before yesterday's funeral. it included officers from departments where nishita served. the family eulogies drew tears and smiles. >> i know kevin is so grateful for everybody being here today, and we are, too. >> i can imagine him dusting off his shoulders and saying, yep, this is all for me. here's our superhero.
