what do folks need to know? >> you do need to bundle up this morning. it will be in the 30s as some of us walk out the door in the inland areas, and there could be frost on the cars so watch out for that. on sunday is when the atmospheric river arrives and it will bring in heavy rain as well as sierra snow. here's a look at the way we are starting our friday morning, right now in the mid-30s in santa rosa, and colder as you head into the south county. morgan hill, dublin, 36 degrees. it's a cold start to our morning, but once again all of our attention will be focused on the atmospheric river. download the app and you are also preparing this weekend, clearing storm drains and windshield wipers and tires, and all the furniture around your home, make sure it's secure for the rain and high winds. vianey, it has been a nice start out there but chilly.

states with governors calling in the national guard to help. alice barr is in washington, and this is a battle on two fronts, alice. >> that's the way to look at it at this point, marcus. we are seeing this expansion of covid booster access now to the teenage age group, as there's new research showing just how important boosters are to mount a strong defense against the omicron variant. right now it's the surging delta variant that is once again filling hospitals with unvaccinated patients. with covid cases and hospitalizations increasing rapidly. >> another day, another shift with no beds here in colorado. >> 16 and 17-year-olds are now eligible for booster shots, and the white house is earning extra

protection for everybody 16 and up. >> get your booster right away. >> that after pfizer released data showing boosters gives more protection. >> i think we see a change in definition to what fully vaccinated means, and it's going to be three doses of the vaccine. >> but there are many americans that still have not had their first two doses, driving the cases to a breaking point. >> i'm tired of it. >> the governors of new york, new hampshire and maine now sending national guard troops to help overwhelmed hospitals. >> because more unvaccinated people are ending up in icus and on ventilators. the numbers have not leveled

off. they are not going down. >> vaccines are now offering a way out from another dark winter. so far kids younger than 16 are not eligible for booster shots, but health officials say they will still be protected for 16 months -- excuse me, because their immune response is generally stronger than adults. >> i want to ask you this before we get out of here, because as we head into the winter months we have heard a lot of different things, and what are the numbers now compared to earlier in the pandemic? >> right. so when you look at daily deaths, which is the most serious measurement we can look at, on tuesday this week we hit 1,800 deaths in one day. when you look back to the peak

before vaccines were widely available last winter, we were seeing 2,400 deaths in a single day in january, and then somewhere in between, july, when we had the lowest number of daily deaths, we were at 111 per day. at a time when we have vaccines, medical experts are saying we should not be in this direction again. you are 11 times more likely to die from covid if you are not vaccinated. >> a lot of people say they are not going to do it. i guess we will have to see what happens. alice barr in washington this morning, thank you. it's 6:06. some schools in the north bay are launching a new effort to help young people better connect during the tough times. san rafael schools are opening up centers that will help students deal with isolation and stress during the pandemic. that will be along with davidson middle school.

students can get one-on-one counseling, and attend support groups and get crisis intervention. pandemic relief funds will fund that. hamilton was shot three times on broadway during a night out on november 21st. he said he just purchased a pizza and shared it with strangers and was walking to his car when he heard gunshots. he managed to run inside a club to receive help. he's now wondering if this was a case of mistaken identity. >> i definitely would have tried my best to utilize the skill sets i have in violence intervention prevention, mediation and de-escalation. i didn't even get the opportunity to do any of that stuff. >> he says he's really hoping witnesses come forward to help police make an arrest before the shooter targets somebody else.

happening today some san francisco students plan to walk out of class to protest how they say the district handles complaints of sexual assault. kris sanchez joins us. this has been an ongoing protests. >> students have been calling on san francisco unified to change how authorities respond to their allegations of sexual assault and harassment. students will walk out of class from several different high schools and gather add city hall at 10:00. they don't believe the district is doing a good enough job of holding perpetrators accountable. this student said the student that assaulted her was suspended from his club activity for only a month and is still allowed to be in the same classroom with her. >> i will move myself and he will move himself to be right near me, and i am like, can we

not do that? i thought we were clear on having our boundaries set. but, no, it's me taking myself out of that class, and that's what is making me feel comfortable -- and i have to -- stop, can you -- >> yeah, she just has to -- sorry. >> we just saw him in the hall. >> yeah, we are in the library and the doors are clear and he just walked by. that really shows you there's nothing being done. >> we did ask specifically about her allegations but they responded with the overall policy. this diagram shows the formal process of how schools handle complaints of sexual assaults and according to district policy of whether it happens on campus or off campus, and you can see it's a complicated process. and the superintendent said we want to reiterate every

it was one degree above freezing in some spots, and we have seen some spots in the north bay freezing this morning, and you may have to scrape ice off the winds shield. after this frosty morning we will see sunshine in the forecast. as we go into the weekend we will be preparing for the big atmospheric river that will be moving in on sunday, and we will talk more about the timing as well as well as how much rain you may get. that's coming up in a few minutes. vianey, what are you watching for the commute? >> so far things have been going well out on the roads. things have been quiet. i want to give you a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, and it's 6:11, and notice the friday light commute there so you don't have to worry about the metering lights this morning, at least not now, anyway. the commute to get towards the

good friday morning. it's a cold start. as you are heading out in the east bay, check out concord's temperature right now. 39 degrees. we may even dip another degree or two before sunrise. then we will see the temperatures heading up. chilly temperatures today as we get ready for the atmospheric river. we will talk more about what that is and how much rain you can expect and the timing, coming up in a few minutes. in dublin, things are

getting busy but no major accidents. drive times are coming up. happy friday to you. a group of apple watch owners has sued apple in federal court in northern california saying their watch's battery expand to the point where they crack the case and break the class and injures them. it covers all but the most current apple watch. apple has in the past offered free replacements for those whose batteries swell. the latest inflation numbers showing prices are not just going up, but they are going up faster than we previously measured. year over year, 8% more for things from last year. inflation is 0.8 of 1% if you are counting just last month.

the price of fish, up 11%. they don't measure the cost of alcohol, but coffee up 7.5%. flour, 6%. rental cars skewing the numbers, up 37%. this is, of course, is not a complete list. if we strip out the cost of food, it looks better. the white house knows inflation is a political challenge for president biden. the republicans also know inflation is a political challenge for president biden. many americans demanding washington do something. the thing is, while people want something done about inflation, and probably something does need to be done, it's going to hurt. the fed at some point will with draw a lot of its support for

the economy, and that could mean people lose their jobs, and it will adjust interest rates as well and that will indirectly affect things like your mortgage. in the '70s, the inflation was so bad that 15, 20% interest rates was not uncommon. this man saved america from inflation by raising rates but he was the most hated man in america. it's an amazing thing to think of. imagine what your house would cost with even a 12% opposed to a 2% or 3% -- >> yeah, also the cost of homes were a lot cheaper. thanks, scott. 6:18 this morning. a new plan from google to help more people make it in the bay.

and we are starting out very cold. we are going to get sunshine today. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, as we get ready for a lot of rain, so we can see the atmospheric river on the satellite imagery. it's a long narrow band of rain and it brings us about half of the yearly amount of rainfall. it will give us a big boost as we go into the next several days with it starting to bring us rain as early as sunday. we are getting ready for a lot of rain next week. we are going to be tracking this on every platform, every newscast. make sure you keep checking in for the updates. we are looking at the arrival of the rain in the north bay starting late saturday night. most of us seeing it on sunday morning. it just continues sunday into monday. there will be a brief break and then another storm system will be behind that that will bring additional rainfall on wednesday into thursday. there will be a lot going on with some of the higher rainfall totals continuing to hit the

santa cruz mountains, some of the coastal areas, and then we get the rain shadowed valleys like san josé and the tri-valley into livermore as well, when you see the lower amounts of rainfall. we are looking at the potential of flooding. this weekend, you want to make sure you are clearing the storm drains and getting ready for this and security the patio furniture around the home. the santa cruz mountains, there could be nearly nine inches of rainfall with this. most of the north bay inland areas getting four to five inches of rain. for the sierra, take a look at this model. it's showing we could see 74 inches of snow in tahoe city, and south lake tahoe, 72. as much as 99 inches of snow at those ski resorts, so it's going to be unreal to see all of that. this does look like a juicy storm, so we will talk a lot about that over the weekend into early next week. we do only have a little while

meteorologist, kari hall, to look at when that rain is headed our way, kari? >> yeah, we have a lot of changes in this forecast. we are starting out cold and clear this morning and some spots in the inland valleys, we have near freezing temperatures. it will be a sunny day, and this weekend we will prep for the storm coming in. next week we will get ready for heavy rain as well as snow for the sierra, and snow on the bay area peaks as well. our temperatures will be chilly today and while we are in the 50s, you want to make sure you are preparing for the incoming rain, and you want to make sure all the furniture around the house is secure as well as rain proof. we are going to see dry weather today. cold temperatures during the overnight hours, and then all attention turns to the storm that will be arriving early sunday morning. we will more on the timing as well as how much rain to expect. that's coming up in a few minutes, laura and marcus. >> thank you very much. we also have a live look at

storm ranger. he's atop san bruno this morning, getting ready to start scanning as the storm arrives. you can also download our nbc bay area app. it's free. today in the bay's bob redell is live in pleasanton crunching some numbers. what does this increase look like for us? >> coronavirus cases here in the bay area up 30% over the last week, hospitalizations up 9% since thanksgiving. this is according to the data analysis done by the "san francisco chronicle." this is a reminder you want to go to your local pharmacy or health care provider, get vaccinated if you have not, and if you have, get boosted.

the cdc said 16 and 17-year-olds can get boosted now. also, wear a mask when you are indoors and avoid the large crowds. the delta variant is still the dominant strain, not the highly contagious omicron variant we have heard so much about. so far there are only 13 cases of omicron here in california. back east hospitals have been ordered to cancel elective surgeries so there are more beds for covid patients. here in california, many are hoping the golden state does not want that to happen. the forced cancelation of

bridge. the utility in yuba county agreed to sell billions of gallons of water in the event it gets too low. taking a live look at highway i-80 near kingville this morning, a lot more fresh powder could be on the way with the big storm that is going to hit the bay area. we will see the rain here and maybe snow in the higher elevations. it's a cold start in the bay area this morning. >> yes, it is a cold start and we are watching how much snow we will see in the sierra for the weekend. just a heads up, if you do plan

to go, it is dry today and tomorrow. the roads cleared from the previous light snow that we have gotten, but then the big storm coming in on sunday will bring in rain that will transition over to snow as temperatures drop throughout the day on sunday. then it's going to be extremely hard to travel once that snowstorm comes in. either you need to get there and back by tomorrow or stay throughout next week, because we are looking at expected snow in this area in about two to five feet, and those temperatures will be cold. we can see the wind gusts topping 100 miles per hour. so it's going to be snowing very heavily there. if you don't want to risk it and want to stay at home, how about ice skating in walnut creek. the opening of walnut creek on ice happens this weekend and temperatures will be in the mid-50s. it will be a chilly evening, so make sure you are wearing a nice warm coat.

in san josé, it will be cool out there. we head back to the 40s tonight and breezy, so that will make it feel a little cooler. tomorrow in berkeley, you can get unique gifts for your friends as well as see santa. this will go on from 4:00 to 7:00 in the afternoon. temperatures go from 59 degrees ahead of that event, dropping down to the upper 40s. if you are thinking about heading to the beach this weekend, i think today and tomorrow will be the best day, and stinson beach will see temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, and then rain on sunday so not the best beach day, but it will be a nice one with sunshine and cool out there along the coast. we will talk more about the rain and how much you may get coming up in a few minutes. vianey is tracking that morning commute. yeah, we have a new crash along westbound 580 near the

good friday morning. right now at 6:41, you are heading out the door. the chilly temperatures and the mostly clear sky. right now at walnut creek, we are at 39 degrees. we may even dip another degree or two before we see those temperatures slowly warm up. there's sunshine in today's forecast, and big changes ahead for the days ahead. we will detail that in a few minutes. the bay bridge toll plaza is busy and metering lights are on and it's starting to get busy. i'll have a full traffic report coming up. some san francisco students plan to walk out of class this morning to protest how the district handles allegations of sexual assault. this is an ongoing protests, kris. >> yeah, students have called on san francisco unified to change how authorities respond to

sexual harassment. students will walk out of class from several high schools in san francisco and gather at city hall. students say they don't believe the district is doing a good enough job of holding perpetrators accountable. when we asked, we were sent this diagram of how they handle complaints of sexual assault. according to title 9 policy and district policy and whether or not it handles on campus or off. the superintendent reiterated, sexual harassment has no place in our schools. we are committed to taking all appropriate steps to make sure we educate, prevent and address any incidents of sexual harassment in our schools. the letter includes links for students to report incidents of sexual harassment. as for the walkout, the superintendent says the district

applauds student's activist new mexico -- activism. authorities say a passenger assaulted a flight attendant and air marshall. this is video from oklahoma city where the plane landed last night. the air marshall took that passenger into custody. still no word on charges. the faa is now investigating. america will be able to pay its bills. >> scott mcgrew, in the past that would not be that remarkable, but it is now. >> that america pays its debt is something america has counted on in the past, and the full credit of the united states means something. a group of republicans led by mitch mcconnell joined democrats

in the senate that passed a bill that would allow america to raise the debt ceiling and pay what they owed. raising the debt ceiling is something that happens fairly often, usually not a political issue. that's because paying bills for things you already bought really is not optional. mitch mcconnell and the rest of the republicans voted yes, and they are getting a lot of grief from other republicans for working with democrats. technically, they voted on a one-time law that would allow democrats to raise the ceiling. and then we are negotiating with the russians trying to head off a new invasion.

a federal appeals court rejected former president trump's argument that what he did and said on the day of the attack at the capitol was protected by executive privilege. the national archives have two weeks to turn that material over to the select committee. trump says he will appeal to the supreme court. and then the committee will postpone a deposition of miller. of course, we have got the bob dole funeral. the president will be at that and deliver remarks. i will talk about that on twitter. you can find me @scottmcgrew. many of us work five days a week and just waiting the weekend to come, and now things could change in one middle eastern country. >> that's right, the united arab

emirates said it will have a 4 1/2 day workweek starting at noon on friday. they hope it will improve work-life balance. i know a lot of people are taking that work-life balance in account. would you keep working five days a week or you want that half day on friday, and not surprisingly, 62% say why stop, vote for four days now. 32% said 4 1/2 days sound good. >> i am with the four. four is good. you can get a lot done in four. >> with our business, our industry, it's difficult. >> we never stop anyway. >> yeah, i like to freestyle my

work schedule, and i am in for mike, and then the week after that i am in for kari. >> next week you are on vacation. it's nice to sleep in. >> a morning like today, too, it's so cold you want to bundle up and stay in. >> yeah, it's so hard to get out of bed when it's so cold out there. i am showing you the temperatures, and you can see that at the bottom of the screen. it's in the 40s right now, and a lot of 30s and freezing temperatures. but, hey, we have sunshine, and that will help wake you up and get you going. this is what we have been talking about and will continue to talk about on every newscast and every platform go into the next several days as we get ready for this atmospheric river targeting the bay area early next week. we are going to see some of the heavy rain starting to arrive as early as sunday and maybe even

saturday night for the north bay. we are looking at this rain that will be coming in and just continuing to pour as we head through monday and tuesday. only a brief break on wednesday before we see another system coming in that is going to bring additional rainfall as well as more sierra snow. we do have a busy time period here. the rain we have been asking for is coming in, and it looks like it's all coming in at once. we will talk about this with the rainfall happening from sunday through tuesday, and once again some of the highest rainfall totals will be up to about four inches in some spots, and maybe even more along the coastline and santa cruz mountains. gusting winds at 20 to 40 miles per hour. you want to make sure you are clearing the storm drains, raking up the leaves and getting ready for the heavy rain to keep them from clogging up the storm drains. once again we will see rain in the forecast. let's run through the computer model. this is one computer model and it's giving us an idea of how

much rain we could see. take a look at the santa cruz mountains, where some spots could get nearly nine inches of rainfall. then you take a look elsewhere across the bay area and it's still pretty high, anywhere from three to five inches. i don't think we will see that inch spots like san josé and livermore, but we will be watching that. for the computer model showing we could see 99 inches of snow in kirkwood, and king vale, yes, we are excited to see snow, but, wow, that's going to be quite amazing if that does pan out. as we look at the forecast for the weekend, it's going to be cold. you will be raking the leaves and cleaning up everything, and we will have sunshine today. then go into the weekend, you want to make sure that you have that nbc bay area app so you can get storm ranger and it will give you alerts as rain approaches location, and you can stay ahead of that and see what

bob redell is live. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. this is not related to the omicron variant. the delta variant still the dominant strain in california, in the bay area and the rest of the country for that matter. there are only 13 cases of omicron in spite of the fact we have heard so much about it. to get to the numbers within the past week here in the bay area, coronavirus cases up 37%. hospitalizations up 9% since thanksgiving. according to analysis done by the "san francisco chronicle," this is a reminder, if you have not gotten vaccinated go get vaccinated, and if you have been vaccinated, get boosted. reporting live for "today in the bay," bob redell. the fda approved the emergency use authorization for 16 and 17-year-olds.

there you go, because this will be a nice, big, juicy storm, kari. she has the breakdown of the timeline for us. >> yes, we are starting out cold and dry this morning but we are getting ready for the atmospheric river that will arrive early on sunday and continue through tuesday. rainfall totals will reach anywhere from three to four inches but there could be spots that get more wind speeds at 20 to 40 miles per hour, and then we will see the cold temperatures staying with us with the possibility of low elevation snow, and that means the bay area peaks could be capped with know by the middle of next week. be prepared for the possibility of street flooding and clogged drains so clear those drains throughout the weekend, and then another round in the forecast wednesday into thursday. we don't have much longer with the dry weather, it's today and tomorrow. the north bay could see that moving in as late as tomorrow
