sun is beginning to rise over san jose. it's cold out there. 36 degrees on your screen. that's not a mistake. it's very cold out there. thank you for starting your weekend with us. i am kira klapper. good morning, you can see clear skies and if you are wondering just how cold we are, let's take a look at your current temperatures right now. we are in the low 30s. >> a freeze warning for santa rosa and napa. this is going to be in place until 8:00 a.m. that could mean slick roads out there. drive safe. our big story is heading into the next couple of days. we'll remain dry for the day. you can see the storm system

moving in. north bay, i want to tap into that severe weather in the midwest. those deadly tornados sweeping across six states over night. there is still tornado watches in effect. the line of storm is expected to push through the east coast with tornado watches still in effect. a very sad situation out in the midwest. >> kira. >> vianey, thank you. that's what we are beginning with breaking news this morning, after 30 tornados tour through the midwest. nearly 200,000 utility customers are in the dark without power across the six states that were hit. there is a desperate search and rescue effort underway to find those still trapped. the governor of kentucky saying this is the most severe tornado the states have ever seen. you can see the small town of

mayfield, kentucky flatten when about 50 people were killed and 100 trapped inside a candle factory that collapsed. the national guards have deployed to help those in need. in illinois, this tornado you can see in the dark skies caught on video as it takes aim at an amazon warehouse, you can see the tornado as it sweeps across the building and rips off the roof. a wall about a length of a football field also collapsed. >> in video from the ground of the scene, you can see emergency crews trying to help those amazon workers out. there were fatalities at the amazon building but have not confirmed how many. parts of the building were destroyed. >> when i went around to the back area, that was destroyed. it was like somebody blew up the

whole area, it was debris. majority of the cars and some of the amazon vans close to the lake. it was just destroyed. >> and in arkansas, this is jonesboro, you can see emergency crew helping people at a nursing home. the mayor of the small town told msnbc that two people died when the roof of that nursing home collapsed. at least five others are in injured. 20 people trapped inside. emergency responders working fast to get the rest of the people out. we'll continue to follow this throughout our newscast. back here locally, people in an east bay neighborhood are waking up back in their home this morning following a standoff late last night, it forced a lockdown in the area for hours after police say a man walking through the streets of antioch shooting at homes and cars

before barricaing himself inside a home. he then fired at officers and their drones. today in the bay cheryl hurd reports. >> reporter: you are looking at home surveillance video of a woman and two young children being evacuated by police as a man on the street randomly fired shots in antioch. >> another officer came and knocked on my door and said they were evacuating people and they took the fence down and brought the people out on this side of the street. >> reporter: it began after 1:00 p.m., police receive calls that a man with a rifle was shooting at cars and homes. >> i hear a lot of gunshots. our dogs started barking. when police arrive, the standoff began. neighbors were toll to shelter in place. the suspect repeatedly fired shots from inside the house outside in the direction of

officers as well as other residents. >> the s.w.a.t. team was called in along with several other agencies including the fbi. drones were used to keep an eye on his movement. he even shot one of them out of the sky. at around 7:00, smoke started coing the home. the suspect set his garage on fire and tried to get away. >> the suspect exited his house and contacted by s.w.a.t. officers, they fired their weapons. >> reporter: police firing multiple times and killing the gunman. terry reacting to the drama she watched unfolds. >> not really safe. california is getting too violent. >> that was cheryl hurd reporting. happening today, bay area law enforcement agencies are working to get unwanted guns off

the streets. the group united playas is holding their event at 8:00 this morning at howard street organizers will pay $100 for handguns and shotguns and $200 for assault rifles. san mateo will also pay $100 for handguns, shotguns and $200 for assault rifles. organizers for both events say no questions will be asked for buyback. the latest example of brazen thefts plaguing the bay area.

clara county received their boosters. health leaders believe boosters could add another layer of protection. in san francisco, saint agnus church, it came to light that the arch bishop was not yet vaccinated. parish ners expressed concerns. so why is the arch bishop vaccinated? they sent us a statement "healthcare decisions are very

personal matter." the arch bishop told the chronicle he was not an anti-vaxer but his personal care told him it was not necessary to get the vaccine. a supporter who opposed the new texas abortion law. the supreme court issued a ruling concerning the law, banning abortions after six weeks. in an 8-1 decision, the justices ruled the lawsuit filed by abortion providers can move forward. but the high court is allowing the ban to remain in place while the court battle continues. the law allows private citizens to sue abortion providers. that decision comes after a week after the supreme court heard arguments in a separate case in which the state of mississippi asking the judges to overturn

atmospheric river. you want to prepare today, we'll see an increase in high clouds. for the majority of the day, we'll be dry temperatures. clear out those storm gutters and bring in anything that could fly away. we'll see gusty conditions heading into tomorrow. set yourself up for a good idea. get some, what are those things called? we have been eating those go backs for a while. the reason for that is in case you need a flashlight and power goes out, you know where to find it. hour by hour, rain starting late tonight and early tomorrow morning. we are talking santa rosa and napa. coastal mountains are going to get a good amount of rain. the bulk of this rain moves in sunday afternoon and monday. depending on how this stalls

out, the rain will head out until lunch. highest totals in the coastal mountains and north bay of 3 to 6 inches which could see some rise. yes, sierra snow, your window for heading into the sierra is going to be today. the arrival of that storm is going to be concerns as well for slick roads and of course gusty winds. one week rain outlook. this is totally the next four days. look at the estimated snowfall totals, 79 or 90 inches. you want to head out now so you are already there before the storm makes it impact. heading into sunday and monday, the storm really hits, on monday we are talking gusty winds and 20 to 50 plus miles per hour, guys, really need to get ready. >> thanks for the warning.

you can see still a very active line of storms. we expect to see the eastern half of the country get impact by this rain. it's been a tough situation to see unfold. of course we'll be looking at it very closely. >> kira. >> we'll indeed, vianey. we are following that breaking news this morning of 30 tornados tearing through the midwest over night, entire towns levelled and the death toll expected to climb to well over 100 this morning. across six states nearly 200,000 customers are in the cold and the dark without power. nbc's morgan chesky has more on the desperate search and rescue across those six states. >> reporter: good morning, we are following late breaking details on this massive storm system on multiple tornados over night that left the community of mayfield, kentucky decimated. the governor in kentucky saying the death toll at least 50 there

and it could rise as daylight shows more of the damage left behind from this system. tornados from arkansas and missouri and kentucky and national weather officials are trying to determine if this was the work of a single tornado that could have been on the ground for hundreds of miles. we are hearing story of first responders rushing to get people to safety. in arkansas, a nursing home was struck. first responders trying to get people out but at least one fatality was confirm there. a candle factory with at least 100 people were struck and the tragic update from there. at least 12 people may have perished at that one business alone. in illinois, the storm striking an amazon warehouse there leaving it shredded. daylight will expose more of the

tropical air that brings about 50% of our yearly rainfall. a river in the sky. that's how it appears in our satellite radar. what does it have to do with climate change and the impact? it could bring fewer atmospheric river. it could be dangerous the get it all at once because of how quickly that could come into the area. higher chance of large winds from drought to floody. that could mean we could be dry to a ton of rain all at once. let's talk about our hour by hour outlook. if you live in the north, you will be the first to see the rain. santa rosa and san rafael, we'll start to see it, heading into sunday, this will have a chance

to stall out. gusty winds from the south, 40 to 50 plus miles per hour. this is taking all the way from tomorrow through tuesday and wednesday and thursday. over 6 inches of rain in the area and a great shot of greater tahoe, a little bit of snow. there is going to be a ton more after the storm system, potentially over 99 inches of rain in the sierra if you are going to be traveling up there. today is your day to head out now because the roads are going to be dangerous over the next four days. >> good warning, thanks, vianey. the storm could mean several feet of snow in the sierra, if you are anxious to head to tahoe, a word of caution from caltran is next. ♪give my regards to broadway!♪
